2022: Closing of express grocery delivery service in Paris and London
Yandex has closed express grocery delivery services in Paris and London, which became known on August 9, 2022. As a source close to Yandex.Go told Forbes, the company will liquidate the French division, the process will be completed "in a maximum of two to three months." According to the interlocutor of the publication, the London business is closing, since Yandex could not find a buyer for it.
The source explained that the company needed a "new player with money," but there are no such people on the market yet. And current players "have their own platforms," the Forbes whistleblower added. The Yango Deli-branded service was available to more than 1.4 million residents in Bethnal Green, Battersea, Bermondsey and Acton.
According to a Yandex representative, the company in London and Paris has changed its business model and is now focused on IT solutions for managing delivery to third-party customers. This will be done by the new Yandex division Yango Deli Tech. At the same time, the company did not comment on negotiations on the sale of London business. They clarified that they intend to focus on the sale of technologies, since there are no "ready-made package solutions" for business on the market yet.
We invite potential partners to configure and optimize all processes - from a warehouse management system, an application for a collector, routing the "last mile" and BI-dashboards in real time to auto-order systems and robotic storekeepers, - said the representative of Yandex. |
The impending departure of Yandex from the European market became known back in March 2022. The company planned to close the French division and sell the business in the UK, Bloomberg reported, citing knowledgeable sources. Then the representative of Yandex.Lavka confirmed to Forbes that the company was suspending operations in Paris, and spoke about the interest of competitors and investors in British business.[1]
2021
Service launch in London
On October 14, 2021, Yandex announced the launch of a fast grocery delivery service in London. It operates under the international Yango Deli brand.
The British capital became the second European city after Paris, where Yandex.Lavka started working. In large European cities, like London and Paris, the penetration of e-commerce and food delivery, high population density and solvent demand are higher, the company explained.
By mid-October 2021, the Yango Deli service is available to more than 1.4 million residents in the London areas of Bethnal Green, Battersea, Bermondsey and Acton. As in Russia, couriers in yellow uniforms on bicycles and mopeds will deliver food around the British capital.
As for the entire Yandex.Lavka, it has more than 400 darkstors in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Kazan, Yekaterinburg, as well as in Israel, Paris and London.
The head of Yango Deli UK, Yevgeny Chernikov, in a conversation with Reuters, noted that the company has a large set of technical skills in implementing the project. According to him, hiring a courier in London is more expensive than in Moscow, but at the same time the British are ready to spend more on orders.
According to the news agency, in London Yango Deli will be difficult in terms of competitiveness - Uber, Amazon Weezy, Getir, Dija and Gorillas services operate in the city. Chernikov explained that the project team will have to slightly change the usual working methods that are applicable in Russia, and the main task is to adapt the business model to economic conditions in the capital of Great Britain.
We're not quite a new company - we've done it before. We have a huge bank of technical talent, which means that we can do many things much better and on a much larger scale than others, "he said.[2] |
Yandex.Lavka enters the markets of France and Britain
On April 16, 2021, Yandex announced the upcoming launch of Yandex.Lavka in France and Britain. In these countries, the grocery delivery service will operate under the global brand Yango Deli, but according to the same scheme (darkstores are warehouses that work only for express delivery when ordering via the Internet) as in Russia.
To work in France, Yandex registered a new legal entity (Deli International) and started recruiting. First, the service will start working in Paris (in the second quarter of 2021), then in London. In these cities, the company promises to deliver groceries in 10-15 minutes.
Each of these markets is several times larger than Moscow, there is higher penetration of e-commerce and food delivery, high population density and solvent demand. Moreover, they have not yet been divided between major players, "says Maxim Avtukhov, commercial and financial director of Yandex.Lavka. - As a technology company, we have several advantages: firstly, technologies already tested in Russia and Israel are important, because there are no ready-made solutions for darkstores on the market, startups will have to develop everything from scratch, and secondly, the ability to quickly scale in new markets. |
By mid-April 2021, Yandex.Lavka operates a network of more than 240 warehouses in five regions of Russia and Israel, from where products are delivered to the nearest houses and offices. The company does not disclose the volume of investments in foreign expansion.
According to Avtukhov, in 2021 Yandex will invest about $500 million in the development of e-commerce and product delivery projects. Part of the money will go to launch a business outside of Russia.
Yandex services work in other European countries. There is a service for ordering trips under the Yango and Yandex Go brands in 16 countries, including Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
