Dell Compellent Storage - the storage system is constructed on architecture which, in addition, provides data movement between storage levels – depending on their real use and requirements to performance. Dell Compellent Storage will virtualize storage infrastructure, opening new levels of efficiency, dynamism and fault tolerance of storage of a corporate class.

Solutions moves ahead the company within the concept of intellectual data management (Intelligent Data Management – IDM).

The IDM strategy of corporation implements according to the company the best ideas in the industry of DWH and meets the growing requirements of modern business. IDM helps the companies of the most different profile and scale of activity to use effectively resources of data centers and also protects from unjustified idle times of systems and provides a rational expense of working time of IT personnel. In general use of strategy of Dell IDM allows corporate customers not only to manage qualitatively data, but also to reduce costs for their storage for 80% – now and in the future.

2016: DWH of the SC series are compatible to solutions for management of data storage

On October 31, 2016 the Dell EMC company announced compatibility of storage systems of the SC series (earlier were issued under the name Compellent) with a solution portfolio for management of data storage, ensuring mobility and data protection.

The Dell EMC company implemented a possibility of use of software and hardware solutions for arrays of storage of the SC series:

Management of storage and mobility of data

  • Dell EMC ViPR Suite. This packet consists of ViPR Controller and ViPR Storage Resource Management (SRM), provides the automatic analysis and execution of operations for heterogeneous arrays of storage.
  • Dell EMC Intelligent Data Mobility (IDM) technology. The solution provides seamless migration on the new systems.
  • Dell EMC PowerPath. The high-performance software management of routes of data transmissions which automates management of routes, their switching at failures and recovery optimizes balancing of loading for ensuring availability and high performance of applications unlike the majority of the multiple path I/O functions (MPIO) implemented at the level of operating systems.
  • Dell EMC VPLEX. Provide continuous data availability and their mobility for maintenance of full-time employment of business and critical applications. Provides performance improvement twice, the effective solution All-Flash at cost and a full support of arrays of the SC series.
  • Dell EMC CloudArray. The solution for data storage integrated with clouds expands the capacity of the arrays set in DPC of the customer due to use of the cloud capacity, economic on costs.

Data protection

  • Dell EMC Data Domain systems. According to IDC, solutions win first place in the market of specialized devices for backup (Purpose Built Backup Appliance), providing the performance measures, best in the class, and efficiency for backup and recovery using deduplication of the data which are stored on SC series arrays.
  • Dell EMC Data Protection Suite Avamar for Backup featuring and NetWorker. The solution provides high-performance backup and recovery for SC series arrays, including backup using deduplication on Data Domain, backup on a disk and a tape, long-term preserving in a cloud and also all functions of monitoring of backup, the analysis and preparation of reports.
  • Dell EMC RecoverPoint for Virtual Machines. Simple effective solution for operation and disaster recovery of the virtualized applications in the environment of VMware.

Availability

The listed Dell EMC product line for management of storage, protection and mobility of data is available to the systems of the SC series. Support of the solutions ViPR SRM and PowerPath will be implemented at the end of 2016.

2012: Compellent Storage Center based on the SC8000 controller

In June, 2012 the business development manager of DWH of Dell in Russia and the CIS Mihail Vorobyov announced an output corporation on the Russian market of new generation of storage systems of Compellent Storage Center based on the SC8000 controller and upgraded version of 64-bit specialized Storage Center 6.1 OS. He explained that the technological solutions implemented in Compellent Storage Center SC8000 allow corporate clients to reach competitive performance measures in the industry, data storage capacity and also to reduce capital and operating costs of implementation and support of DWH. According to him, the new solution is the next serious step of Dell to implementations of global strategy of creation of the effective, high-performance, scalable intellectual platform of storage of corporate data, including unstructured.

Mr. Vorobyov emphasized that possibilities of architecture of Dell Fluid Data mean the general optimization of network of storage (with intellectual deduplication and compression), the unified management of all infrastructure and also dynamic movement of the stored data in the automatic mode between different levels of infrastructure of storage taking into account the frequency of access to them. All this, according to vendor, allows to guarantee to clients of Dell reliability of storage system at the level of 'five nine', i.e. to provide the 99.999% level of availability.

It selected distinctive feature of new generation of DWH of Dell Compellent which consists in close integration of architecture of storage with the hardware of Dell, including support of Thin Provisioning technology. This technology allows to create volumes of any virtual size, limiting their physical capacity to requirements of the data which are really stored in them. For implementation of Thin Provisioning technology in the Dell Compellent systems software of Dynamic Capacity which, allegedly, completely separates selection of resources of data storage from their use is used. Applying this technology, in most cases, as believe in Dell, clients can save from 40 to 60% of disk space in comparison with a traditional method of reservation of resources of storage.

Mr. Vorobyov noted that SC8000 considerably exceeds the previous generation of controllers on the characteristics. So, this device includes two six-nuclear processors Intel Xeon E5 (2.5 GHz), eight-channel OZU with a frequency of 1333 MHz, six expansion slots PCI-E 3.0 (three — the half size and three — full-size), and existence of technology of air cooling of Dell Fresh Air ensures reliable functioning of DWH in the conditions of the raised temperature condition in DPCs.

The new generation of storage systems of Dell Compellent Storage Center SC8000 supports the Fibre Channel interfaces (with capacity of 8 Gbps), ISCSI (1 Gbps and 10 Gbps), ISCSI/FCoE (10 Gbps) and also the disk storage modules Fibre Channel (FC), SAS and solid-state SSD.

Clients of Dell are given an opportunity of the simplified transition from the used disk arrays of the Series 30 and Series 40 families to SC8000: for this purpose rather current contract on support hardware and the software.

Mr. Vorobyov considers that the output of new generation of storage systems of Compellent Storage Center will strengthen positions of corporation in the Russian market of DWH in which the company, locating two warehouses, became more active in more than 50 cities where support of corporate clients is performed the next working day, and in six cities — within several hours.
