500 IT cases. The Moscow mayor's office told about the work of the digital double of the city

At the end of August 2023, the Minister of the Government of Moscow, the head of the Department of Information Technologies (DIT) Eduard Lysenko spoke about the digital twin of the city. He noted that in the Russian capital there are "about 500 cases in terms of digitalization, which give a good result," and they cover all sectors of the Moscow economy.

[Цифровой Double -] This is a kind of model of Moscow. Every year, aircraft, helicopters, drones and tens of millions of photos fly over the city - and even a little over its border within the central ring road. All these pictures are glued together into a real digital model of the city, in which architectural urban planning solutions are embedded. No action takes place now without using this tool. The digital twin is the basis for decision-making in the Moscow government. He changed the management model. A similar system is used in Singapore. Nevertheless, this is a unique story that we will develop further, - said Lysenko.]

In 2023, a new subsystem of the digital twin of Moscow was created. For this, the developers used modern technologies that are more typical for metaverse

As told in the capital's mayor's office, earlier in 2023, a new subsystem of the digital twin of Moscow was created. To do this, the developers used modern technologies that are more typical for metaverse: more realistic graphics and the ability to interact with objects in virtual space. This made it possible to use a digital twin not only to solve management problems, but also to create interesting and informative services for residents.

It is noted that the Digital Twin of the City project simplifies the adoption of urban planning decisions, control over the implementation of significant city projects and the analysis of industry data. This platform is based on an accurate 3D copy of the capital with all buildings, structures, engineering and transport communications.[1]

Sobyanin told how the digital double of Moscow helps to manage the city

The "digital double of Moscow" helps to manage the city, the capital's mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on July 7, 2023 in his Telegram channel. According to him, all buildings, structures and objects, engineering and transport communications are applied to the exact 3D copy of Moscow in virtual reality.

The unique platform is the city's own development. It helps to plan the construction of residential, industrial and social facilities and monitor how significant city projects are implemented, - said the mayor.

"Digital double of Moscow" helps to manage the city

On July 7, 2023, the mos.ru website provides data according to which the creation of the "Digital Double of Moscow" required 12 million photographs taken at different angles from the air and ground. Each year, snapshots are updated to keep the 3D copy up-to-date. The photogrammetric model is complemented by 5 thousand analytical layers with arrays of data on all spheres of life of the capital, which are updated in real time. Another unique platform uses an archive of panoramas of 13 thousand kilometers of the entire territory of Moscow since 2013.

It is noted that the "Digital Twin of Moscow" is used at various stages of the renovation program - from modeling the effective use of space and new points of attraction in areas to operational control of construction work using video from city cameras and quadcopters.

Also, the "Digital Twin of Moscow" helps to plan projects for the integrated development of territories. The platform allows you to place the entire complex of future buildings on 3D copies at once in order to plan the development of an entire microdistrict. And switching between layers, you can see how the territory looked earlier and how its appearance will change after the completion of construction.

The analytics tools built into the "Digital Twin of Moscow" allow you to simulate in advance how this or that solution will affect the life of the city. So, this function function helped to decide on the reconstruction of the Great Stone Bridge without completely blocking traffic on it.[2]

Presentation of the "Digital Double of Moscow"

The Moscow government has presented several large-scale projects in the development and management of the metropolis. Among them are the digital twin of the city and the Mos.Cloud information system. To create a photogrammetric model of Moscow, it took 16 million aerial photographs. As of June 2022, the Virtual Card displays over 3.2 thousand square kilometers of the capital. The model is complemented by panoramas of Moscow roads and streets with a total length of more than 13 thousand kilometers. To see how the new object will fit into the existing development, its 3D model is placed in a digital twin. The map consists of more than five thousand thematic layers with different information - from issued building permits to organizations that are located in buildings. All key figures are updated regularly.
