2024: Transparent Laptop Announcement

At the end of February 2024, Lenovo announced the ThinkBook Transparent Display Laptop, which features a transparent screen. As conceived by the developers, this execution provides a number of additional opportunities for designers, architects and content creators.

The frameless display, made using MicroLED technology, has a diagonal of 17.3 inches and has a resolution of 720p. Through this panel, you can see the objects located behind the laptop computer. There is a camera in the back of the laptop. Thanks to this, augmented reality functions can be implemented that will help you work more efficiently on various engineering, gaming and design projects.

ThinkBook Transparent Display Laptop

The ThinkBook Transparent Display Laptop does not have a traditional physical keyboard. Instead, a glass panel is used, which, if necessary, displays virtual letters and characters. This design made it possible to turn the computer base into a completely flat drawing surface using a special pen. It is noted that in fact in this mode, the base of the laptop performs the functions of the Wacom graphics tablet. On the other hand, due to the use of a virtual keyboard, there is no tactile feedback when pressing buttons.

The computer uses artificial intelligence algorithms to "integrate" real-world objects into virtual space. In this case, the objects whose images are obtained by the camera are converted into digital models for subsequent interaction with them. The degree of transparency of the display reaches 55%. In order to get a completely opaque screen, it is enough to use a white background: the maximum brightness reaches 1000 nits. The laptop is equipped with USB Type-C ports.[1]

Outdated version of OpenSSL in Dell, HP and Lenovo firmware puts supply chains at risk

Firmware analysis from Dell, HP and Lenovo revealed outdated versions of the OpenSSL cryptographic library, which poses additional risks to supply chains. This became known on November 28, 2022.

EFI Dev Kit is a development code that is used for applications, firmware images, and UEFI drivers. And EFI Development Kit II comes with its own cryptographic package CryptoPkg, which uses the services of the OpenSSL project.

According to to data INFORMATION SECURITY Binarl, the firmware of Lenovo Thinkpad devices used three different versions of OpenSSL: 0.9.8zb, 1.0.0a and 1.0.2j, the last of which was released in 2018. Moreover, one of the firmware modules called InfineonTpmUpdateDxe used OpenSSL version 0.9.8zb, which was released on August 4, 2014.

According to them, this situation clearly indicates a supply chain problem with third-party dependencies that do not receive fixes even for critical vulnerabilities.

Some Lenovo and Dell firmware packages used an even older version (0.9.8l), which was released on November 5, 2009. HP has a similar problem - some firmware uses a 10-year-old version of OpenSSL (0.9.8w).

Lenovo unveils laptop with screen that grows in height

On October 18, 2022, the Chinese company Lenovo introduced several devices equipped with twisting displays. One of the gadgets is a portable computer that can be used in two modes - folded and stretched. Details about the ThinkPad X1 Fold flexible display model

On January 12, 2020, Lenovo revealed details about the ThinkPad X1 Fold flexible display computer, which first became known in May 2019. Designed for high performance, the computer is made in a form factor that will rethink the field of mobile computing.

The computer is made using light alloys and carbon fiber and is placed in a leather case, which provides the practicality and reliability that has become the hallmark of any ThinkPad device. Developed in conjunction with Intel, the computer supports Always Connected Technology and is equipped with Intel Core processors with Intel Hybrid Technology.

ThinkPad X1 Fold

The device will go on sale in the second half of 2020 and will be equipped with OCWindows 10. In the future, Lenovo plans to ship the ThinkPad X1 Fold with Windows 10X so that users can get even more features from a foldable computer. In addition, the optional 5G connectivity module will allow you to work anywhere, anytime, and whatever you want.

Use Cases

The concept of the book has been known for a thousand years. Obviously, a computer with a flexible screen will have the same advantages - mobility and ease of use. Research shows that people who often switch between a smartphone, tablet and laptop are looking for a device with different capabilities and benefits.

The ThinkPad X1 Fold is an innovative, lightweight device compact enough to be comfortable to carry around. It can successfully combine the main advantages of the above gadgets without compromising on performance or screen size. Especially for Windows 10, Lenovo has developed smart mode switching software that allows you to adapt to different use cases in any environment.

ThinkPad X1 Fold

Weighing less than 1 kg when unfolded, the X1 Fold is very convenient for actively using the 13.3-inch OLED touch screen. In landscape orientation with a folding stand integrated into a leather case, the computer can be used to view and comment on the presentation, or connect a Mini Fold Bluetooth keyboard. When folded, the keyboard is stored inside the computer, securely held by magnets, and charged using a wireless charger. When the user needs a break, he will be able to watch the new episode of his favorite series on a bright OLED screen and enjoy the sound of Dolby Audio.

In book orientation, you can take notes or sketches using the Active Pen, as well as view and sign documents. If you fully expand the screen, you can use your computer as a tablet. And if you bend it slightly, then you can comfortably read several chapters from the new book on the plane.

In laptop mode, users can work on two independent screens, which allows you to increase productivity when you have to solve several tasks at once. On the top screen, you can participate in a video conference while viewing and editing the presentation on the bottom screen. You can place different documents on screens and compare them or watch a lecture on one screen, and take notes on another. All this is possible in both landscape and portrait orientation, depending on how convenient the user is.

Finally, the X1 Fold is great for office applications. Connect a full-size keyboard and mouse, as well as a second display, via USB Type-C, and then install the computer in the optional ThinkPad X1 Fold Stand in the desired orientation. Thus, users will be able to enjoy the benefits of a full-fledged desktop solution.

Reliability and practicality

Development has been going on for more than four years, during which time Lenovo engineers analyzed the four main designs of the X1 Fold and chose a 13.3-inch display with an aspect ratio of 4×3, which provides maximum convenience and high productivity.

The ThinkPad development team, together with Intel engineers, tirelessly worked to solve the difficulties associated with mechanical reliability of hinges and electronics design. Through its partnership with LG Display, Lenovo sets quality standards in the flexible screen market. All these efforts have led to several innovative developments.

Having studied six different hinge designs and more than twenty options, Lenovo experts have created a unique multi-link hinge mechanism that can withstand any loads that arise when folding.

The hinge mechanism, combined with an alloy structure reinforced with carbon fiber, improves the use of the computer in a decomposed state. The pOLED screen of the X1 Fold has passed comprehensive tests for durability and compliance with Lenovo criteria: finger clicks on the surface, touch and fall tracking.

X1 Folds are undergoing the same rigorous tests as ThinkPad laptops: additional intensive screen folding testing, high load testing and digital pen verification to meet the highest quality standards.

Creating a computer with a flexible display is a difficult engineering task, but Lenovo did an excellent job of solving it. The legendary legacy in the form of the ThinkPad for many years has provided us with the foundation for progressive development and the creation of an engineering masterpiece in the form of the X1 Fold, a category of devices that appears once a decade.

ThinkPad X1 Carbon Review

In early February 2018, Lenovo announced a voluntary recall of more than 80,000 of its ThinkPad X1 Carbon laptops due to the risk of their fire.

According to USA the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, we are talking about the fifth generation of ThinkPad X1 laptops with 14-inch displays and black or silver cases, which were released China between December 2016 and November 2017.[8]

According to the regulator, about 78 thousand of these devices were sold in the United States, and about 5.5 thousand more were sold in Canada. Lenovo clarified that the recall does not apply to ThinkPad X1 Carbon laptops manufactured on November 1, 2017 and later.

You can find out if the revocation program applies to the laptop by the serial number of the device on its back cover

As the manufacturer explains, due to the properly secured screw in a number of laptops, there is a threat of damage to the lithium-ion battery, which, in turn, can cause overheating of devices, ignition or even explosion.

Lenovo learned about the problem after three owners of the fifth generation ThinkPad X1 Carbon laptops contacted the company and complained about overheating of the devices, which led to their damage.

As of early February 2018, Lenovo had not received a single report of harm to people or their property, in addition to the laptops themselves. However, the company strongly recommended that owners of laptops subject to feedback immediately stop using them.

Lenovo intends to inspect the recalled devices and fix the problems, if necessary. All work will be performed free of charge.

You can find out whether the recall program applies to a particular laptop on the manufacturer's website by the serial number of the device on its back cover. Also on the corresponding page, Lenovo gives detailed instructions on what to do if the laptop is in the recalled list.[9]
