2023: Tourist flow growth by 12% to 1.75 million people

In 2023, 1.75 million tourists visited the Republic of Dagestan, which is 12% more than in 2022, when the tourist flow amounted to 1.5 million people. This result was a record for the region and indicates a significant increase in interest in Dagestan as a tourist destination. This became known in November 2024.

The main factors in the growth of the tourist flow were the implementation of the national project "Tourism and Hospitality Industry," an increase in the number of rooms, the creation of new places of attraction and the expansion of the route network of flights.

Tourist flow to Dagestan increased to 1.75 million people

In 2023, 70 projects aimed at developing tourism infrastructure received state support in the region. Among them are 16 initiatives related to the development of beaches and tourist routes in the amount of ₽131,7 million, 18 projects to create modular non-capital accommodation facilities (campsites and car camps) in the amount of ₽82,1 million and 34 projects to modernize tourism infrastructure, for which ₽104,9 million were allocated.

One of the largest infrastructure projects was the financing of the tourist code of the Derbent city center in the amount of ₽252,5 million. Also, subsidies were provided to seven projects in six municipalities of the republic to implement local initiatives aimed at improving conditions for travelers.

In 2024, the region will receive ₽525,3 million for the further development of modular non-capital accommodation facilities, which will create 550 new rooms. In addition, it is planned to attract more than ₽1 billion private investments to expand the tourism potential of Dagestan.

The national project "Tourism and Hospitality Industry," implemented at the initiative of the President Russia Vladimir Putin since 2019, aims to increase the number of domestic travel to 140 million per year by 2030. This project is aimed at ensuring economic growth through the development of tourism and creating conditions for safe and comfortable travel around the country.[1]

The Government of the Republic of Dagestan has expanded the Digital Transformation Strategy of the region, increasing the number of industries included in it from 7 to 17. This became known in the spring of 2024.

The indicator "digital maturity" is comprehensive and includes five industries: public administration - 87% at the end of 2023, education - 84.1%, health care - 82.5%, urban economy and construction - 40.5%, public transport - 17.8%.[3]

2024: More than 15 killed in militant attack in Derbent and Makhachkala

The celebration of June 23, 2024 of one of the most revered Orthodox holidays - Holy Trinity Day - was overshadowed by a series of terrorist acts in the Caucasus region.

In the evening, militants staged a series of attacks in the Republic of Dagestan. In Derbent, shooting was opened in the area of ​ ​ the Church of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos and the arson of the building of the Kele-Numaz synagogue was organized. Meanwhile, in Makhachkala around the same time, unknown persons fired at the traffic police post, and then staged a series of attacks in the north-west of the city, including in the vicinity of the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The head of the region Sergey Melikov made an appeal to the population. According to him, six militants were eliminated in Makhachkala and Derbent, while more than 15 police officers became victims of the terrorist attack, there are dead among civilians.
