Severstal allocates 290 billion rubles for digitalization. Where the money will go
On June 12, 2024, Severstal announced its intention to invest 290 billion rubles in digitalization projects. We are talking, among other things, about the introduction of artificial intelligence technologies. It is expected that due to organizational changes related to digitalization and the use of AI, the company will be able to increase labor productivity by at least 10% by 2029.
According to Alexey Mordashov, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Severstal, for successful import substitution in industry, it is necessary to invest several billion dollars in domestic solutions. In particular, the creation of an analogue of the SAP family of products, which left the Russian market due to the emerging geopolitical situation, may require from $1 to $2 billion.
For 2024, Severstal planned digitalization costs in the amount of 120 billion rubles, for 2025 - another 170 billion rubles. The funds will be used to install new machines, as well as more efficient and modern equipment. As an example, Mordashov cited the introduction at one of the enterprise units of a solution based on the analysis of big data and neural networks. As a result, labor productivity was raised by 5%.
We spent about $200 thousand on this decision and have already received an effect of several million dollars, "says Mordashov. |
Another area of investment is the attraction of qualified specialists. Severstal is committed to ensuring the well-being of our employees. A combination of factors affecting the quality of life of people is implied: a comfortable workplace, access to high-quality medical services, housing, etc. To this end, the program "For our own: with care for everyone" was launched, to which 15 billion rubles will be allocated in 2024.[1]
Doubling IT investment in 5 years
In 2024, Severstal will allocate 10 billion rubles for the implementation of projects in the field of IT and digital. Thus, the company's investment in information technology has doubled in five years. Such information was shared with TAdviser on February 12, 2024 by representatives of Severstal.
In 2024, Severstal's IT team will continue to work on projects import substitution in the field of industry, ON which are being implemented within the framework of the industrial competence center. " Metallurgy We are talking about the Metallurgy production process management system MES and the integrated planning IPS Metallurgy system. According to the company's recall, the first result was achieved in 2023: the pilot of MES Metallurgy successfully passed pilot production at the Severstal service metal center (part of the production of pipe rolled products), located in the Kolpinsky district. St. Petersburg
In addition, Severstal will continue to implement solutions based on machine learning and computer vision both on resource assets and in the downstream direction. Among the priorities, in addition to new developments, the company named the active scaling of proven solutions to other units, as well as the introduction of language models. According to Severstal estimates, in 2023 the economic effect of new and improved solutions put into commercial operation over the past year amounted to 960 million rubles. The largest implementations were the expert blast furnace system for optimization, control and control of the iron smelting process, the rolling rate control system and the output of slabs from the Autotemp 2.0 furnaces, the pelletizing process control system, and others.
In 2024, Severstal-Infocom plans to increase the volume of its own developments to third-party customers, bring new IT products to the market and expand the list of clients in the field of IT consulting. Sales to external customers, launched in 2022, broke even after six months. Now the IT team has revenue and profit targets, Severstal considers IT products and services to be a long-term benchmark.
"This year, Severstal's IT function will continue to move on the main strategic priorities that we have identified for ourselves. This is a contribution to the construction of the digital sovereignty of the Russian industry within the framework of leadership in the IC "Metallurgy," ensuring the cybersecurity of the production circuit and corporate networks, supporting new business models, strengthening the role of artificial intelligence, as well as the entry of our developments into foreign markets and the further development of digital culture in the company. At the same time, we focus on labor productivity issues - both in the company as a whole due to technological solutions and within the IT team, "said Sergey Dunaev, Director of Information Technology at Severstal.
2020: Plans to invest 6.7 billion rubles in IT initiatives
On March 4, 2020, PAO Severstal announced that in 2020 it plans to invest 6.7 billion rubles in IT and digital initiatives, which is 7% more than in 2019.
In 2020, the company's specialists are faced with the task of developing solutions in the field of materials management and quality of finished products. In particular, it is necessary to build models for informing customers, as well as develop solutions for integrated planning and automatic product certification. Severstal will also focus on creating automated solutions for Upstream and Severstal-Metiz. To improve the quality of data transmission at production, technological networks will be built that meet both the requirements of federal legislation and the company's internal requirements for throughput. Also in 2020, the implementation of previously launched initiatives will continue: for example, the transition of the company's divisions to the latest generation of the SAP ERP system - the SAP S/4HANA solution and the development of the online store.
The company will continue to develop and implement intelligent solutions that can predict and detect product defects, issue recommendations on the production process, and increase production by replacing manual control of the unit with control using artificial intelligence technologies. For example, in 2019, Cherepovets Steel Mill (Cherepovets Steel Mill) implemented a neural network-based solution to recognize the class of defects on a metal sheet at the cross-cutting unit No. 4 in the metal finishing shop No. 2. Also, with the help of a mathematical model, the middle part of the continuous etching unit No. 3 was automated, through which half of all metal entering cold rolled products at Cherepovets Steel Mill passes.
{{quote 'author = Alexey Kulichenko said, Deputy CEO to finance for to economy and Severstal|Most of Severstal's investment program is focused on financing development projects to achieve a significant advantage in the cost of basic products in the long term, providing customers with special solutions, and increasing steel production. Over the past three years, we have doubled investments in information technology and digitalization of Severstal and see a significant economic effect from the projects implemented. }}
2019:67% IT budget growth
In 2019, Severstal will allocate 5.7 billion rubles to continue implementing digital and IT initiatives aimed at improving business processes and client services. This is stated in the message about the investment plans of the company, published in February 2019.
In 2019, the company's IT budget grew by about 67%: a year earlier, 3.4 billion rubles were invested in projects in these areas, TAdviser cited data in Severstal.
Talking about the areas that will require the greatest costs, Severstal told TAdviser that in terms of IT projects in 2019, great attention will be paid to the implementation of end-to-end metal traceability systems. This project is carried out in three directions: weight measurement, machine marking of recognition and targeted accounting of products. The latter can be contact (based on reading a barcode, matrix code or radio frequency tags) and contactless.
Much attention will also be paid to the further implementation of MES systems at the industrial sites of Severstal Russian Steel.
In addition, we are working on a unified system for managing production master data, as well as on transforming the processes of customer order acceptance, production planning and logistics, "added Severstal. |
In 2019, Severstal's digital division continues to work on projects to optimize the 2000 mill (hot metal rolling unit) and improve the quality of steel. The digital optimization of the 2000 mill includes calculating and drawing up optimal schedules for rolling metal with certain characteristics, as a result - reducing downtime and increasing the productivity of the unit, explained TAdviser at Severstal.
In turn, within the framework of the "quality management" direction of steel, the company is working on the compilation of mathematical models that could predict at different stages of production whether the metal meets the customer's order requirements or not. Each steel grade has unique properties, to obtain which it is necessary to comply with the technology and requirements for chemical composition.
Also, predictive maintenance of equipment at the Cherepovets site continues, aimed at reducing the time of planned downtime by switching to a new repair schedule.
2017: Investments in digitalization - 1.7 billion rubles
In 2017, Severstal intends to allocate about 1.7 billion rubles for the introduction of information technologies, said Anastasia Mishanina, head of communications at Severstal. The company predicts total capital expenditures for 2017 at 34 billion rubles. Thus, the company invests about 5% of capital expenditures in the digitalization of production.
2014: IT Cost Optimization by 50%
For 2013-2014, the company's IT costs decreased by about 50%, told TAdviser in Severstal. Firstly, Severstal has reduced its total investment, this is not only the case with IT. And secondly, it carried out cost optimization, including by centralizing and optimizing the number of IT personnel.
In addition, the company revised and renegotiated contracts with the main IT suppliers, including - with Microsoft, with the mobile provider - with Megafon, ultimately receiving the "best prices."
As of the beginning of 2015, the revision of contracts with other suppliers continued. In this case, we are also talking about restoring order in terms of software licenses: the company got rid of a number of licenses for products that were installed on users ' PCs by default, but in fact they did not need them.

Mastering the production of measuring systems
On September 8, 2021, Severstal announced that it had mastered the production of measuring systems. The company is ready to adapt the developed technical solutions to the customer's tasks. Measuring systems have great scaling potential in a number of industries. Such solutions are applicable at industrial enterprises, including in metallurgy and woodworking, in service metal centers, in the production of metalware products and welded pipe, in retail.
The technical development of our employees can be much more flexible, accurate and effective than "boxed" solutions from the leaders of the measuring systems market. We are interested in the production of products adapted to specific tasks. Our experts are well aware of the difficulties that customers face when ordering and delivering such solutions during operation, so they can eliminate risks and provide the best quality at a competitive price. Our company has concentrated the main competencies in the field of development. To offer a comprehensive product ready for operation, we form around the company an ecosystem of scientific and industrial partners, manufacturers of components, - commented Pyotr Mishnev, Director for Technical Development and Quality of Severstal Russian Steel. |
Several types of measuring systems have been tested in industrial conditions at Severstal. The first of them is video inspection systems for the surface of rolled metal. A pilot project to create its own analogue of foreign equipment was implemented in the production of flat rolled products of the Cherepovets Metallurgical Plant. Such systems provide detection and classification of defects using video cameras, machine vision and neural networks. The effectiveness of the prototype has been confirmed: the image quality obtained from the equipment is not inferior to imported analogues.
The next type is geometric measurement systems and product shapes. Non-contact measurement and control of compliance with the specified parameters are carried out using laser triangulation sensors. The system's task range is wide. You can measure various parameters: the length, width and thickness of the product, its tablet and sickle-like nature, or a set of parameters.
The third type of products is various sensors of the industrial Internet of Things. For example, impact sensors can prevent product injury during handling operations. At the Cherepovets Steel Mill industrial site, such equipment was tested on crane brackets.
By engaging partners in the process of manufacturing measuring systems, Severstal is responsible to the customer for the finished solution. The Company undertakes warranty obligations up to two years, and also provides service support after the expiration of the warranty service period. Severstal plans to improve technical solutions, in particular, to make them more accurate and high-quality, while reducing the cost.

Digital mine: Vorkutaugol continues digital transformation
In 2020, within the framework of the Digital Transformation initiative, a number of innovative projects will continue to be developed at Vorkuta coal mining enterprises, united by the general term Digital Mine[1].
The infrastructure basis of the Digital Mine is a multifunctional security system (MFSS) - a complex of hardware devices for collecting, transmitting, processing data, as well as software. The emergence of such a system was initially dictated by the requirement of legislation in terms of ensuring industrial safety. However, the multifunctionality and wide possibilities made it possible on the basis of IFSB to implement a lot of parallel projects that optimize and control technological processes.
In December 2019, a project for the introduction of an e-book for issuing orders (EKVN) was launched in pilot mode. Two sections of the Zapolyarnaya mine have begun to form replacement production tasks using a digital system. Based on the data received from the IFSB, the EKVN will provide information on the location and movement of each miner on a three-dimensional virtual map of mine workings, keep records and control the timely issuance of personal protective equipment, record the time of employee marks at mine checkpoints, inform about the results of the pre-shift medical examination.
- In 2020, we plan to transfer all Zapolyarnaya sites to work with EQUN and begin implementing this system in other mines, "says Alexander Borodich, manager of the Severstal Business System Development Center. - It is also planned to launch the EQUN mobile application for explosion-proof smartphones, which will allow working with EQUN right at the workplace in the mine. |
The mine smartphone itself will play an increasingly significant role in the Digital Mine. It is planned that in the coming year 495 smartphones will become indispensable assistants not only for engineering and technical workers, but also foremen with link workers. The technical capabilities of the devices are used as efficiently as possible, and with the advent of new applications, the functionality will expand.
- In the plans for the development of the IFSB for 2020 - to provide full coverage of all the main mine workings with a WI-FI network, that is, to additionally extend it to more than 60 kilometers, - says Anatoly Puzanov, manager of the Vorkutaugol energy and mechanical service. - After that, all the functions and tools provided in smartphones will be available even in the most remote developments. |
Another component of the Digital Shaft is the system for monitoring the heating of belt conveyor elements. The equipment conducts continuous thermal imaging of the belt conveyor and promptly warns personnel about the increased heating of some of its elements. One such system, tracking 1.2 kilometers of the conveyor, was launched at the Zapolyarnaya mine in November 2019. For 2020, it is planned to introduce seven more complexes, which will control a total of 8.4 kilometers of conveyor lines. The high cost of equipment is still hindering widespread implementation, but the project has already proven its effectiveness by warning a long-term simple conveyor in December last year.

Launching an Innovation Discovery Platform
On September 30, 2019, Severstal announced the launch of Severstal Open Innovation (innovations.severstal.com), which is designed to become a tool for working with the company's open innovations. It lists all ways the company interacts with startups, innovation teams and industry experts, as well as specifying priority areas and specific tasks.
Severstal Open Innovation contains a Challenges section, which is updated with current challenges from Severstal's production units. For example, a technology is being developed to separate metal dust from sand or to find ways to isolate abrasion-resistant pedestrian zones. Companies will be able to offer their ideas on solving these and other problems or test existing technologies at Severstal's industrial sites. Also, the tasks of the Challenges section can serve as topics for research work. The list of tasks will be constantly updated, and teams will be able to work directly with experts and specialists of the company.
In addition, on the Severstal Open Innovation website, you can apply to the Severstal Ventures corporate fund, familiarize yourself with the capabilities of the Severstal Technopark and learn about the start of the next wave of recruitment to the Steel Tech accelerator or about the requirements for online projects for cooperation with Severstal Digital Business.
Severstal actively attracts ideas and proposals: we have been operating the Technopark for about a year, an accelerator was launched in the spring, Severstal Ventures completed several transactions in a year. These tools were added - Challenges and Severstal Digital business. Now they are all conveniently collected on the same resource and give an idea of the possibilities for interacting with our company. We hope that startups and industry experts will show interest in them, and together we can make metallurgy a more advanced and technological industry, commented on Technical Director and Head of Severstal Transformation Office Agnes Ritter

2017
Digital Is a New Growth Point
Russian steel companies in 2017 are entering a new investment cycle. Its characteristic feature will be the absence of new large projects, the growth of dividend yields and the active introduction of new digital technologies.
Severstal"" continues to steer a course towards innovation and high returns for shareholders - to this end, it is developing new lines of work such as digital technology and e-commerce, and using total shareholder returns as a key benchmark. "Aton" Analyst Andrei Lobazov came to this conclusion after the autumn "Steel Sector Investors Day."
The metallurgist's strategy for 2018 is to increase EBITDA. At the same time, Severstal is already one of the most efficient Russian metallurgical companies. The company's EBITDA in 2016 amounted to $1.9 billion, the company's EBITDA margin is the highest in the industry - 32.3%.
It would seem that increasing financial indicators is a universal task of any business. What is important, however, is how the company envisions increasing them. Severstal management intends to reduce production costs and optimize its marketing strategy through the development and implementation of digital technologies and the Internet trading system, follows from the report of Aton, which was reviewed by TAdviser.
The company took up the topic of digital closely in 2016, Anastasia Mishanina, head of communications at Severstal, told TAdviser. And now, she says, digital adoption is a new growth point.
In 2017, Severstal intends to allocate about 1.7 billion rubles for the introduction of information technologies, Mishanina said. The company predicts total capital expenditures for 2017 at 34 billion rubles. Thus, the company invests about 5% of capital expenditures in the digitalization of production.
Until 2017, the company did not allocate the share of digital projects in the capex structure, Mishanina emphasized.
If we do not take into account the country risks, which have recently increased significantly in Russia, then metallurgists as of 2017 simply do not need to significantly expand their steel capacity, since there is an overproduction of steel on the market.
Director of the Center for Economic Forecasting of Gazprombank Airat Khalikov told TAdviser that the consumption of rolled steel in Russia in 2016 amounted to 56.6% (40.1 million tons) of total production - 70.8 million tons. The rest was sold in foreign markets: CIS, European Union, Turkey. According to specialists from the Gazprombank Center for Economic Forecasting, in 2017 the situation will not change much: 72 million tons of rolled steel will be produced in Russia, domestic consumption will be 44, 1 million tons (61.25%).
Industrial projects of metallurgists today are associated with updating or maintaining the raw material base or with the production of galvanized and coated rolled products - a market in which there is still a share of imports from China. However, capital expenditures in such projects are moderate, Andrei Lobazov is sure. The utilization of steelmaking facilities in Russia, according to him, is 83-84%. And in the current market conditions, there is no need to increase it:
"The growth in the load of steelmaking capacities in Russia can occur only against the background of an increase in demand for steel from the construction sector, but it is not growing yet," the expert explained in a conversation with TAdviser.
That is why Severstal focuses on increasing the efficiency of current capacities and increasing the share of products with high added value, the company representative notes.
The main criterion for making a decision on the introduction of a particular technology is its economic feasibility: the project should pay off and begin to bring arrivals within two years from the moment of launch, says Anastasia Mishanina.
As of November 2017, at the stage of implementation, the company has seven mathematical models for analyzing big data, the effect of which is estimated at about 300 million rubles.
One of the areas that the company is actively developing is the Auto-Certification project, which was effectively launched on Severstal assets. This is a model that collects the history of metal production data and analyzes it for specified characteristics. In parallel, the system evaluates the characteristics of the production process in real time. Comparing historical data and reality, "Auto-Certification" calculates how much metal will be obtained from incoming raw materials and what characteristics it will have. This allows technologists to take samples in a timely manner, makes the operation of operational and technical control services more efficient and minimizes the likelihood of rejection to the next redistribution or to the client, an interlocutor at Severstal told TAdviser.
Modernization, automation and introduction of information technologies is what is happening now in almost every metallurgical holding, emphasizes Aton analyst Andrei Lobazov in a conversation with TAdviser:
By increasing the efficiency of technological processes, companies reduce the consumption of raw materials, reduce the number of rejects and the duration of repair downtime, which has a positive effect on production indicators and production costs |
Due to the fact that steel is able to respond to new requests from society in terms of manufacturability, it will definitely remain in its traditional areas of application and will be able to effectively fight for new markets, says Mishanina from Severstal. For example, they have become good prospects for use in the construction of the so-called fifth mode of transport - the vacuum train hyperloop, the concept of which was proposed by Elon Musk, she predicts.
Automate purchasing steps
The target process provides for a complete set of automated controls of all steps of the procurement process, from the bid to the actual purchase price in accordance with the tender protocol, as well as a built-in process for evaluating the results of cooperation with the supplier throughout the work with it
Change of Chief information officer: Sergey Dunaev instead of Yuri Shekhovtsov
In April 2017, Severstal left Information Technology Director Yuri Shekhovtsov, moving to work at Norilsk Nickel. His successor was Sergey Dunaev, who was tasked with combining all IT management facilities into a single system that uses the best world practices and ensures the growth of Severstal's competitive advantages.
Appointment of Digital Development Director
On January 31, 2017, Severstal announced the appointment of Igor Bardintsev, a native of Sberbank, as Director of Digital Technology Development (CDO). In this role, he is responsible for developing and implementing Severstal's digital strategy, as well as integrating all digital aspects into a single system.
2014: Consolidation of the IT service and its transfer to Severstal-Infocom
In 2014, Severstal completed the consolidation of the IT service and the process of its transfer to a separate subsidiary, Severstal-Infocom, Yuri Shekhovtsov, IT Director , told TAdviser in January 2015 . Severstal's own SAP center , which was previously an internal division of the company, was transferred to it. Now Infocom is a single company providing IT services and implementing IT projects at Severstal, Shekhovtsov explained.
In the process of centralizing the IT staff and transferring it to a separate company, Severstal optimized its total number by about 30%. Optimization affected those areas where there was an excess of personnel.
As of the end of 2014, Severstal has a total of 568 "classic IT" people, including the SAP team, not including technological line communication in factories. And if you count with machine gunners, then in the direction of IT, the company employs about 620 people, said the director of IT at Severstal.
Severstal plans to relocate its team of SAP specialists from Moscow Voronezh, since there is a more attractive labor market. According to Yuri Shekhovtsov, Voronezh the company has already opened an office, a little more than 50 employees work there. In total, 155 people work in SAP, some of them in, To Moscow some of them in. Cherepovets
2012: IT strategy: replacement of EDMS, Wi-Fi in production, reduction of IT staff
In the fall of 2012, a new IT strategy was adopted at the committee of key users of the Severstal metallurgical concern, Yuri Shekhovtsov, Chief information officer of the company, told CNews. The planning horizon in this document is until April 2016.
At the top level, the strategy recorded that the IT division, as a cost center, serves the main business of the holding, and the development of IT is determined by the goals of the business. "These goals are to be in the top five companies in the metallurgical industry in terms of EBITDA, build a vertically integrated holding and, finally, be present in consolidated growing markets," Shekhovtsov lists. "In fact, we see IT as supporting these goals."
He calls the main works replication SAP to the North American division, the introduction of production execution systems (, MES manufacturing execution system, such projects will be the largest for Severstal in 2013-2014) and the deployment of a technological network in Wi-Fi production.
We systematically deployed the ERP system in the Russian Steel division throughout 2012, says Shekhovtsov. - This work is actually completed, we started the last stage on October 1 at Severstal-Metiz. There are still a number of quite small companies that we will transfer to SAP in 2013. |
Earlier, the total costs of metallurgists for German ERP licenses were announced, which amounted to $15.6 million. However, according to the Chief information officer, the overall order of costs "is much higher if we take the amounts for internal and external consulting of the consortium of IBM, BearingPoint and other colleagues." According to CNews, in addition to paying for licenses, contractors received about $17 million for the work performed.
Industrial deployment of Wi-Fi at production sites should be completed in 2013. Based on this project, we will make decisions about which implementations will appear, - explains Shekhovtsov. - There is an idea to make a mobile solution for maintenance and repairs (maintenance), we are talking about adding data to the system directly from mobile devices. The development of a video surveillance system is tied to the completion of the infrastructure project. For a number of such ideas, a final decision has not yet been made |
Also, the changes were supposed to affect the electronic document management system. Severstal worked for Boss-Referent.
We already have a project "Core" to transfer to a new document management system, - said Shekhovtsov. - Strategically, we decided to switch to SharePoint, which is more technologically convenient for us. In fact, a pilot project has already been made at Severstal Resources. We received all the functionality that we planned, but the work has not yet been finally accepted. Accordingly, there is no final decision on the volume of replication |
There was a restructuring of the IT division with a reduction in the number of employees.
We had 1,064 people, by the end of 2012 we planned to leave 732 employees, "Shekhovtsov said. - Now we are moving, maybe even more dynamically. This is without the SAP competence center, where there are both project employees and operating personnel. The target number of the center is about 230 people, and now we have about 190 people working in it |
