2019: The first run

At the beginning of July, 2019 it became known that the first-ever cruise liner with a power supply from accumulators goes to swimming. The vessel under the name Roald Amundsen (in honor of the Norwegian researcher Rual Amundsen who made navigation across the Northwest Passage in 1903-1906 and the first the reached South Pole in 1911) accomodates 500 passengers and is intended for operation in severe climatic conditions.

Roald Amundsen goes from Norwegian Tromsyo to the Arctic. Then it will proceed to Alaska across the Northwest Passage then will float on the South and in October, 2019 should reach coast of Antarctica, Reuters with reference to cruise operator Hurtigruten which will organize these runs reports.

The ship is equipped with the engines using liquid fuel and rechargeable batteries which stock of energy will last approximately for 45-60 minutes of swimming. During the movement the vessel can reserve energy in the accumulator block and use as required. As the CEO of Hurtigruten Daniel Skjeldam explained Reuters, during the movement of the ship excess energy goes from engines to accumulator charging then it is used for a power supply thanks to what the vessel moves almost silently.

Thanks to hybrid execution of the power unit developers of the liner achieved decrease in consumption of fuel and reduction of emission of a carbon dioxide gas by 20%.

Later in 2019 the fleet of Hurtigruten will be replenished with the second hybrid cruise liner which will have twice more capacious rechargeable battery in comparison with Roald Amundsen.

Skyeldam called start "new chapter in sea history" and noted that several years ago use of accumulators in cruise the ship was considered as impossible.[1]
