The U.S. Department of Energy and Ford begin to use a blockchain for utilization of accumulators

Customers: Department of Energy

State and social structures

Contractors: Everledger
Product: Projects based on blockchain technology

Project date: 2020/01

At the end of January, 2020 the U.S. Department of Energy announced financing of the British technology company Everledger within implementation of two initiatives of tracking of lifecycle of accumulators of electric vehicles using a blockchain and Internet of Things. The car maker Ford will take part in the project on utilization of accumulators upon termination of service life.

The project is directed to remuneration of owners of electric vehicles for utilization of li-ion cells. The Ministry of Energy hopes that thus they will be able to process materials and to reduce impact on the environment. Everledger notes that accumulators of electric vehicles can save about 70-80% of the capacity even after ten years of use and, therefore, can be used for other purposes, for example, as accumulators of energy of solar batteries.

By startup estimates, by 2030 about 18 million electric vehicles will be used. The International Energy Agency considers such digits extremely underestimated and calls the forecast — 250 million. Anyway, effective management of production and utilization of accumulators can help transport and power sectors of economy. According to the World Economic Forum, additional use of accumulators can reduce emissions in the atmosphere by 30% and create 10 million jobs.

Will develop a blockchain system which will allow to trace batteries from production before utilization for this Everledger. Concerned parties will gain clear idea of location of the accumulator and its status and also of what metals can be processed for use in new accumulators. Together with Ford Everledger will develop the platform for data exchange about lifecycle of the battery between concerned parties.[1]
