Google's artificial intelligence detects breast cancer more accurately than doctors

In early January 2020, Google introduced a new AI technology that detects breast cancer in women with greater accuracy than rengtenologists. Read more here.

AI first began to successfully predict metastases in MRI images of the mammary glands

In late January 2019, researchers reported being able to use a relatively small dataset to train artificial intelligence to evaluate diagnostic images. According to an article published in the Journal of Digital Imaging, the research team prepared a program to predict the chances of developing axillary lymph node metastases in breast cancer according to MRI.

The AI program has only achieved 84% diagnostic accuracy, but the team is going to collect more data for training the algorithm to eventually use it in clinical practice. It is noted that AI first began to successfully predict metastases on MRI images of the mammary glands.

AI system studies images and predicts metastases

The team collected just 275 images of lymph nodes for the study, but recent advances in computing technology have enabled the development of artificial networks that can detect relationships in small datasets. Thanks to this, the AI application is able to detect regional metastases. The aim of the study is to use digital MRI data to recognize metastatic lymph nodes, which in the future will help surgeons minimize surgery to remove healthy lymph nodes in cancer patients.

AI is being used for the first time to predict metastases in axillary lymph nodes, the researchers note. By applying deep machine learning using a CNN-based algorithm, the researchers were able to obtain reasonable diagnostic efficacy in predicting axillary lymph node metastasis even with a small dataset. A larger database is likely to improve the prediction model and could potentially become a non-invasive alternative to a thick-needle biopsy and even a method of evaluating lymph nodes left over from surgery.[1]

Annual breast cancer diagnosis reduces mortality by 40%

On August 21, 2017, Cancer magazine published the results of a study showing that the annual diagnosis of breast cancer using mammography allows a 40% reduction in the death rate of women in their 40s from this disease.

The author of the report is Dr. Elizabeth Kagan Arleo, who works at the Weill Cornell Medicine School of Medicine and New York Presbyterian Hospital.

File:Aquote1.png
Our findings are important and unprecedented because for the first time, the three most discussed recommendations for mammography screening are matched against each other. Our study will be helpful if women in their 40s start having breast exams every year. The long-term importance is that fewer women die from breast cancer, Arle reported.

The recommendations the doctor refers to are as follows:

  • every year women in their 40s should be screened for breast cancer (views of the American College of Radiology and the Breast Diagnosis Community);

  • it is necessary to carry out diagnostics every two years from 50 to 74 years (American Working Group on Prevention);

  • annual screening for women aged 45 to 54 and biannual screening for those aged 55 to 79 (American Cancer Society).

If you follow the first recommendation, then the probability of mortality from breast cancer is reduced by 39.6%. In the second and third cases - by 23.2% and 30.8%, respectively.

Annual screening saves more lives than other guidelines. This means that you need to repeat mammograms more often. The risks from them are much less compared to the saved life, "Dr. Edward Hendrick from the University of Colorado told the AuntMinnie.com portal.[2]

TechLAB helps diagnose breast cancer in 42 regions of Russia

According to the company TECHLAB"," in 2017, the system Galenos.Diagnostics"" helped to diagnose breast cancer in 42 regions. Russia So, for the whole of 2017, the GalenosDiagnostics decision recorded 32,651 studies, among which in 4,767 cases the "HER2-positive" molecular biological subtype was confirmed, which determines the high effectiveness of the use of targeted therapy. Another 11,232 cases were defined as "luminal A and B," in which the use of hormonal drug therapy is highly effective. Thus, with the use of an IT solution, the effectiveness of treatment and the chances of patients for long-term remission increase, according to TAdviser TechLAB on August 30, 2018. More. here
