Russian scientists have created a soft magnetic robot to clean urethral catheters
ITMO scientists, together with colleagues from Chelyabinsk State University and Southern Federal University, have proposed a minimally invasive and safe approach for cleaning urethral catheters. It is based on magnetic soft robots that remove biofilms with bacteria with almost 100% efficiency. Moreover, they can be controlled remotely - using a magnetic field. The use of soft robots will prevent the development of infections and avoid the frequent painful procedure for changing catheters. ITMO announced this on November 15, 2023. Read more here.

Import of intravenous catheters soared 172.4% in a year
In 2022, about 36.5 million intravenous catheters were delivered from abroad in Russia, which is 172.4% more than a year earlier. Such data are given in a study published in early September 2023 by the analytical agency BusinesStat. Read more here.
2022: Announcement of Siemens Healthineers' AcuNav Volume ICE catheter for precision heart surgery
In mid-May 2022, Siemens Healthineers announced the launch of the next generation AcuNav Volume ICE catheter. The shortened distal tip joint length is an important update in AcuNav Volume ICE that brings physicians closer to critical anatomy, improving maneuverability and catheter control during procedures on the structural heart, the developers said. This innovative feature helps interventionists and electrophysiologists achieve higher imaging results and enables them to better control their procedures. Read more here.
2021:10 innovative catheters named
At the end of January 2022, the specialists of the medical publication Medical Design and Outsourcing named, in their opinion, the main innovative technologies in the catheter market in 2021. The rating is as follows:
10th place - Micro-interventional devices: MIA-T percutaneous tricuspid annuloplasty catheter
The MIA-T system is designed to treat moderate to severe tricuspid regurgitation with a 12F catheter. The MIA-T is equipped with an ergonomic handle, with which the implant is removed when the fuse is pressed and the remove button is pressed. The PolyCor anchors in the implant are loaded into the distal end of the delivery system and deployed in a tricuspid ring in 4/1000 seconds. Micro Interventional Devices studied the safety and effectiveness of the device in a study conducted at six European clinical centers. Data for 12 months was submitted for stamp approval in Europe for December 2021.
"'9th place - Cardiovascular systems: Balloon catheter OrbusNeich Jade
Cardiovascular Systems in June 2021 launched the OrbusNeich Jade balloon catheter for percutaneous transluminal angioplasty in the United States. Balloon catheter designed for peripheral vessels, including obstruction of local arteries and synthetic arteriovenous dialysis fistulas, as well as for post-dilation of balloon-expandable and self-expanding stents. The balloon is designed for high pressure tolerability and balloon dilation with uniform pressure distribution for the treatment of complex lesions. The cylinders are compatible with standard guide wires and catheters with diameters of 0.014, 0.018 and 0.035 inches, length from 135 to 200 cm and working length of the cylinder from 20 to 240 mm.
"'8th place - Boston Scientific: Exalt Model B disposable bronchoscope
In May 2021, Boston Scientific received labeling approval in Europe for its Exalt Model B disposable bronchoscope. The company has developed a device for performing bedside procedures in the intensive care unit, operating room and bronchoscopy office. The Exalt Model B comes in three sizes: thin, regular and large. For procedures such as secretion management, airway intubation, percutaneous tracheostomy, double lumen endotracheal tube placement, and biopsy.
"'7th place - Preceptis Medical: Hummingbird tympanostomy tube system for office pediatric procedures using ear tubes
In June 2021, Preceptis Medical launched the second generation Hummingbird tympanostomy system to the market to perform procedures using pediatric hearing tubes in an office setting. The company has developed a device with an ergonomic design for more efficient ear tubes in children aged 6-24 months. The device allows ENT doctors to make an incision, deliver, position and install an auditory tube using one device per passage. This eliminates the need for general anesthesia and an operating room. The procedure takes about five minutes and only requires local anesthesia. Ear tubes are designed to drain fluid from the Eustachian tube in the ear. They also allow air to enter the middle ear, according to Children's Minnesota, the procedure itself is usually performed in the operating room under general anesthesia.
"'6th place - Medtronic: Evolut FX TAVR system
Medtronic developed the Evolut FX TAVR self-expanding transcatheter system in August 2021, an aortic valve replacement system for the treatment of symptomatic severe aortic stenosis. The TAVR system uses a supraannular valve design that has demonstrated hemodynamic performance superior to surgical aortic valve replacement in large-scale randomized clinical trials, according to the company. In addition, gold markers are built into the frame, providing direct visualization of the depth and location of the valve flaps during implantation. Evolut FX has a redesigned catheter tip design for a smoother insertion profile and a more flexible delivery system allowing freedom of movement on the 360º with stable and predictable deployment. How Evolut FX has four valve sizes for a wide range of patient care and a low delivery profile.
"'5th place - University of California, San Diego: Guided catheter to treat brain aneurysm
A team of researchers from the University of California, San Diego has developed a device to navigate the arteries and blood vessels of the brain for the purpose of treating aneurysms and other neurological diseases. It was inspired by insect legs and tail-like flagellate structures that allow microscopic organisms to swim, the researchers said. The catheter is guided by a hand-held controller, which the surgeon compresses to supply salt fluid to the tip of the catheter to guide it. The controllable tip of the catheter is visible on X-rays.
"'4th place - Stryker: InSpace balloon implant
Stryker developed an InSpace ball implant in July 2021 to restore subacromial space without the need for stitches or fixation devices. The device showed improvements in mobility and shoulder function, the company said. The biodegradable implantable ball reduces friction between the acromion and the head of the humerus or rotator cuff to smoothly slide the head of the humerus along the acromion. The device can be installed arthroscopically or by an open procedure.
"'3rd place - EndoFresh: Disposable digestive endoscope
EndoFresh received approval for a disposable digestive tract endoscopy system in May 2021. The system includes an all-in-one camera system, a disposable upper GI endoscope, and a disposable colonoscope that can be used with the company's medical display and other peripheral devices to visualize, diagnose, and perform gastrointestinal endoscopy.
"'2nd place - Olympus: Disposable bronchoscopes H-SteriScope
Olympus has introduced a line of five H-SteriScope disposable bronchoscopes. Disposable endoscopes are designed for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. They emerged from a collaboration between Olympus subsidiary Veran Medical Technologies and Hunan Vathin Medical Instrument. H-SteriScope disposable bronchoscopes are designed for tissue biopsies, foreign body retrieval, and other advanced procedures to help physicians target, diagnose, and treat patients. Their models have an external diameter of 2.2 mm to 6.2 mm with an operating channel range of 1.2 mm to 3.2 mm. Each bronchoscope is equipped with a rotary function that allows the insertion tube to rotate 90º left and right, and the tip angle is 210º up and down.
"'1st place - Abbott: Piccolo occluder
Abbott's Amplatzer Piccolo occluder is one of the first medical devices that healthcare providers can implant in premature babies weighing less than 1 kg to treat the patent arterial duct in a minimally invasive way. Piccolo is a self-expanding, mesh-like, catheter device that is inserted through a small incision in the leg and guided through the vessels to the heart. A medical technology developer at Abbott designed the device in such a way that a doctor could inject it through the aorta or pulmonary artery, with the ability to retrieve and re-deploy the device for optimal placement.[1]
