In July, 2011 Citrix Systems announced completion of the transaction on acquisition of Cloud.com company, the supplier of software platforms conducting in the market for creation of cloud infrastructure. Terms of transaction are not disclosed.
Transition from model of work with the PC to calculations in a cloud, will lead to intensive development of cloud infrastructure. As a result there will be a new market which amount by the end of 2013, by calculations of analysts, will exceed 11 billion dollars. Thousands of different cloud providers who will offer a broad spectrum of new cloud services for business, infrastructures and developments and also the user, mobile and game services will work at this market. The majority of the clouds servicing this market will have nothing in common with normal corporate DPCs. They will work at cardinally new platforms which are specially developed for cloud computing. The product line of Cloud.com will support as the leading commercial hypervisors (Citrix XenServer® and VMware vSphere), and hypervisors open source (Xen®). The Citrix company intends to expand support of products of Microsoft, such as Hyper-V and System Center within a product line of Cloud.com. Also the solutions Cloud.com will support different development environments by the principle "the platform as service", storage systems, servers and the software for management.
Active use of technologies open source as crucial elements of cloud computing is the cornerstone of the concept of an open architecture of Citrix company. In addition to strengthening of the leading positions in the field of virtualization in such communities as Xen.org, this transaction will allow Citrix to expand support of the OpenStack project, popular cloud infrastructure open source. Today more than 1,100 cloud developers and more than 80 companies participate in the project. As one of founders of community Openstack.org Citrix is the second in value project participant and is a part of members of council of OpenStack by determination of policy.
The declaration of support of the OpenStack project was for the first time made at recently taken place Citrix Synergy conference where "Project Olympus" was announced. Thanks to this acquisition in the subsequent versions of the products Cloud.com Citrix will be able to expand possibilities of support of OpenStack. He will submit to Sameer Dholakia, the vice president and the CEO of the new product Citrix group on development of cloud platforms.
