Selling smartphones with pre-installed viruses. There are more and more complaints

In early September 2023, Xiaomi owners smartphones began to receive numerous complaints that their devices behave as if they were infected with a virus. In particular, smartphones, without the permission of users, change the main page browser Chrome in to a mintnav.com that shows annoying advertisements.

The problem manifests itself on devices with a proprietary MIUI 14 interface. Russian owners of Xiaomi devices and the Redmi brand also faced the described phenomenon. Moreover, spontaneous changes in Chrome settings occur both on completely new gadgets with MIUI 14 out of the box, and on those smartphones that received a firmware update to the specified version.

Xiaomi is caught deliberately introducing malware into its smartphones. The malware is called Mintnav - it changes the Google Chrome home page, redirecting you to a sponsorship resource filled with ads, wrote information security specialist Subhajit Saha.

The Mi Fans Home resource clarifies that the observed situation is explained by the signing of a partnership agreement between Xiaomi and the Mintnav platform. Xiaomi itself denies the use of malware, saying that users can change the main Chrome page in the browser settings at any time. However, third-party experts call Mintnav a potentially unwanted program that can interfere with the Internet.

Mintnav is designed to improve users' digital experiences by providing quick access to current news and websites tailored to their preferences. As with other OEMs, all Xiaomi devices also have their own default home page, the Chinese company said.[3]

Blocking Google services on smartphones in China

In early February 2021, Xiaomi announced that Google's mobile applications (Google Mobile Service package, GMS) "do not meet the requirements." For this reason, after the next update (MIUI 12.5 firmware), the smartphones of the Chinese manufacturer ceased to support the services of the American company.

Xiaomi representatives said that it is impossible to install applications of the American company on smartphones that are not designed for the Google service structure. Thus, owners of Redmi K30 Ultra and Redmi 10X 5G devices have already faced the problem of accessing GMS. Probably all new devices with MIUI 12.5 firmware will also not be compatible with GMS in China. Previously, Chinese users could bypass the ban by downloading certain services manually, but now Xiaomi has completely blocked this feature.

Xiaomi blocks Google services on its smartphones in China

Xiaomi added:

File:Aquote1.png
This is not surprising, because most smartphones in China do not support Google Media Services (GMS), since the company's services are prohibited in the country.
File:Aquote2.png

Xiaomi smartphone owners outside China should not worry yet, as the Chinese company's restrictive measures apply only to the domestic market. In China, Google Play has many competitors, including the Xiaomi app store itself. The refusal to support Google services is the response of the Chinese company to American sanctions adopted by the US Department of Defense. As of February 2020, American companies and individuals are prohibited from investing in Xiaomi and owning the company's securities.

To avoid possible problems with access to GMS when buying a Xiaomi smartphone, it is recommended to pay attention to the firmware offered by the seller. The cost of a model with Chinese MIUI is cheaper than the "global" version, but in case of difficulties, the Chinese will need to be replaced.[7]

Announcement of the Mi 11 smartphone with night video shooting mode

At the end of December 2020, Xiaomi introduced the flagship Mi 11 smartphone with a unique video shooting function in very low light. High-quality night photography has long been popular, but the Mi 11 smartphone became the world's first device with night video shooting mode thanks to Qualcomm's Snapdragon 888 processor.

Xiaomi Mi 11

During night photography, smartphones capture available light for some time, and then combine numerous personnel to create a single improved image. This is a proven method that is used throughout the industry, but a different approach is required to increase video performance in low light conditions. Since it usually takes 24 to 30 frames per second to get smooth video in real time, at night the smartphone must improve all personnel, and almost instantly.

Standard BlinkAI Video/Video

To solve this problem, Xiaomi began working with Boston-based AI company BlinkAI. This company developed deep learning software that allowed the Mi 11 to exceed expected results when shooting video in low light conditions. BlinkAI works in conjunction with Qualcomm's neural processor and processes low-quality scenes using machine learning algorithms. This improves image quality in milliseconds.

According to the developers of BlinkAI, this technology is based on the structure of a neural network that tries to simulate the work of the human visual system. The goal of BlinkAI is to help camera hardware capture images in difficult conditions, just as the human eye does. According to the developers, BlinkAI computing solutions can increase the brightness of video up to five times. So far, the result of its work depends on the presence of moving objects in the frame and their number: if there is little movement in the frame, then objects in night shooting mode are lighter and more detailed, and the total amount of noise decreases.[8]
