History

2021: Sophos bought Braintrace

On July 23, 2021, it became known that Sophos announced the acquisition of Braintrace, a cybersecurity startup that provides organizations with the opportunity to track suspicious network traffic. The terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Braintrace has developed a Network Discovery and Response (NDR) solution that helps organizations easily verify network traffic to detect and filter for suspicious user activity. To do this, use Remote Network Packet Capture (RNCAP) technology, which provides visibility to models of network traffic, including encrypted traffic, without the need to decrypt it. It also provides visibility to cloud traffic, which is usually done offline and supports all major cloud providers, including AWS and Microsoft Azure services.

IP company Sophos bought a developer of Braintrace software to help business detect malicious traffic

As a result of the transaction, Sophos integrates Braintrace's NDR technology into its own adaptive cybersecurity ecosystem, which underpins all of its security products and services. The technology will also help Sophos collect data from firewalls, proxies and VPN, which will allow it to search for network traffic containing instructions for various malware, such as TrickBot and attackers who misuse Cobalt Strike, as well as prevent other malicious traffic that can lead to attacks with extortion of money from companies.

As part of the deal, Braintrace developers, data analysts, and security analysts joined Sophos's global Managed Threat Response (MTR) teams.

Commenting on the deal, which Sophos claimed would make it one of the largest and fastest growing suppliers of managed detection and response systems (MDRs), company CEO Joe Levy said:

We are pleased that Braintrace has built this technology specifically to deliver better security results for its MDR customers. It is difficult to surpass the effective product created by teams of qualified specialists and developers to solve real problems in the field of cybersecurity.

We have created NDR Braintrace technology from scratch for discovery and will now be combined with Sophos into a comprehensive system to provide inter-product search and response in the ecosystem of several suppliers.[1]
