Heurobotics Tailsitter

Product
Developers: Heurobotics

The American company Heurobotics created the new unmanned aerial vehicle — "teylsitter". Such scheme represents the airplane capable to vertical to take off and landing on a tail. According to Aviation Week, in the new device developers implemented the "helicopter" concept of air screws, having used the connected drive and[1] overrunning clutches[2].

Modern small UAVs as a rule use the electric motors which are strictly connected with air screws for flight. Such scheme allows directly or to transmit rotation of a shaft of the motor through a reducer to an air screw and significantly simplifies construction, but has also a number of shortcomings. The most serious of them is the lack of the mode of autorotation.

The mode of autorotation is characteristic of rotary-wing aircraft. It means separation of an air screw and transmission in case of accident. For example, at failure of engines the special device — the overrunning clutch — does not allow to be transferred to rotation of an air screw of transmission. Thanks to it the screw is freely untwisted by the running flow, slows down falling and allows to land under abnormal condition.

In new American "teylsitter" the similar scheme is implemented. The device which glider is executed according to the scheme of "the flying wing" is equipped with two electric motors which through the connected reducers are connected with shaft of air screws. At the same time air screws are equipped with the overrunning clutches disconnecting communication with electric motors for the autorotation mode.
