2024: Moscow began to register couriers in the IT system and give them a digital profile

In August 2024, the city authorities began registering couriers in the information system of the ART CIS with the issuance of a digital profile. This initiative is aimed at systematizing the work of courier services and improving the security of the delivery service in Moscow. Read more here.

2023

Growth of courier deliveries in Russia by 9% to 278.9 million

In 2023, the number of courier deliveries in Russia reached 278.9 million. This is almost 9% more compared to 2022, when the figure was 257 million. The main driver of the courier services market is the reorientation of the population to purchases in online stores, as stated in the materials of BusinesStat, published on May 22, 2024.

The study says that the Russian market for courier deliveries is growing steadily. In 2019, the number of such operations was estimated at 177.2 million. A year later, their number rose to 235.5 million, which corresponds to an increase of 32.9%. In 2021, 246.4 million deliveries were carried out (plus 4.7% on an annualized basis), in 2022 - 257 million (plus 4.3%). In general, during 2019-2023, the volume of deliveries by courier services in Russia increased 1.6 times.

BusinesStat analysts highlight several key industry trends. This is, in particular, the expansion of the geography of delivery and the formation of new companies: large market players master remote and small settlements through franchising. In addition, online trading contributes to the growth in demand for courier services: often online stores choose to partner with a professional courier organization to send goods to customers instead of developing their own delivery service. At the same time, the demand for express delivery is growing.

Digitalization is called another important trend, thanks to which many processes in the field of courier activities can be automated, increasing their efficiency. We are talking, among other things, about the introduction of artificial intelligence technologies for sorting parcels and detecting damage, automated construction of a courier route, creating a portrait of a potential client and other tasks. On the other hand, the introduction of new tools and advanced technologies entails large costs and problems during the transformation of processes.[1]

The demand for couriers has grown 4 times

The number of job offers for couriers in Russia in 2023 increased 3.7 times compared to 2022. Salary offers also increased - by about 30%, reaching 95 thousand rubles a month throughout the country. Such data are given in the study of the Avito Rabota service, which was published on January 23, 2024.

According to RIA Novosti, citing the conclusions of experts, in 2023 couriers were offered various forms of employment, including partial, shift or full, which affects the level of wages. The increase in demand for couriers is due to the increasing popularity of delivery services. Delivery services are now widely represented by retailers, marketplaces and catering establishments.

The number of job offers for couriers in Russia in 2023 increased 3.7 times

According to Artem Kumpel, managing director of Avito Rabota, delivery has become an integral part of everyday life, and more couriers are required to ensure high speed and expand the geography of delivery. This ever-increasing demand also leads to an increase in offers with high wages, which is associated with a shortage of personnel and a high level of competition between employers for couriers, he added.

Yandex.Delivery reported an increase in demand for couriers in Moscow and St. Petersburg in the first six months of 2023 by about 50% compared to the first half of 2022, explaining this trend by the development of e-commerce, increased demand for delivery, reduced labor migration, extremely low unemployment. Yandex.Delivery also noted that the most acute shortage of couriers in Moscow and St. Petersburg is due to the great opportunities for part-time work. So, in Moscow, the cost of attracting new employees for the year almost quadrupled, in the northern capital - by 40%.[2]

The number of couriers working in Russia exceeded 1 million

In Russia, there are more than 1 million couriers against 830 thousand in 2021. This was reported in June 2023 to the Russian Association of Electronic Communications (RAEK) with reference to the statistics of several market players, including Avito, Samokat and Зарплата.ру. According to the authors of the report, every sixth Russian had experience as a courier.

According to Maria Saykina, chief analyst at RAEK, we are talking about couriers working in all types of delivery, including services for the transportation of goods and delivery to points of issue of orders. By the second quarter of 2023, about 1.2 million people are employed in the field of courier delivery, said Mikhail Burmistrov, general director of Infoline Analytics. According to him, it is difficult to name the exact number of couriers, since for many Russians delivery is not the main type of activity, but part-time work. So, according to RAEK, 38% of couriers combine work with study, 16% - with other work.

In Russia, there are more than 1 million couriers

The salary of couriers is growing, which can also indirectly indicate an increase in demand for delivery workers, said Natalya Golovanova, head of the Superjob research center. According to Superjob as of June 2023, the average salary of a foot courier, a courier on a bicycle or scooter in Moscow increased by 9 percent, to 60 thousand rubles a month. With a large load, the salary can grow to 100 thousand rubles. The average salary of a courier driver increased by 6 percent over the year, to 90 thousand rubles a month. The maximum earnings can be 170 thousand rubles a month.

According to RAEK, which were published in June 2023, 38% of couriers combine work with study, 16% - with other work. The demand for couriers began to grow sharply in 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the study, in 2020 it was assumed that by 2024 about 450 thousand people would work as couriers in the Russian Federation, but already in 2022 the demand for personnel in this profession exceeded expectations.[3]

2022

Market growth by 24.5% to 1.7 trillion rubles

The volume of the Russian courier delivery market in 2022 amounted to 1.7 trillion rubles, an increase of 24.5% compared to 2021. Such data in May 2023 led to the Russian Association of Electronic Communications (RAEC).

According to Vedomosti, citing a study by RAEK, in 2022, 47% of the total market, or 788 billion rubles, accounted for the delivery of goods from online stores and marketplaces. This segment grew by 13% over the year. Another 520 billion rubles is the delivery of products (e-grocery). The market for delivery of ready-made dishes from restaurants grew by 25% and amounted to 222 billion rubles. The segment of grocery delivery services from supermarkets grew by 66% over the year.

The volume of the Russian courier delivery market reached 1.7 trillion rubles

The only segment that has decreased compared to 2021 is the delivery of documents, correspondence and parcels. The number of orders "to the door" has increased, but 79% of deliveries are still carried out before the points of issue of goods, checkpoints, as well as cargo b2b delivery, the researchers note.

The number of orders delivered "to the door" also increased: from 925 million in 2021 to 1.16 billion in 2022. But this segment is still relatively small, as it accounts for only a fifth of the delivery market. 79% of deliveries are still carried out before the point of issue of orders, checkpoints or cargo B2B delivery.

The key driver of market development is the delivery of products from stores, confirms the data of RAEK, the general director of Infoline Analytics Mikhail Burmistrov. Unlike foreign countries, Russia there is practically no self-pickup of goods and is present either in local networks or when buying alcohol. According to Burmistrov, there is consolidation, enlargement of services on the market, their introduction into various ecosystems. He also added that the e-commerce goods delivery segment will be shrinking.[4]

The number of courier deliveries in 5 years decreased by 16.3%

In 2022, residents of Russia 206 million times used the services of couriers, which is 16.3% less than in 2018. BusinesStat analysts told about the market decline in early May 2023.

According to them, the sanctions policy of Western countries had a significant impact on courier activities. In 2022, courier services faced a shortage of car parts, cargo containers, and global inflation. Against the background of the economic crisis, the solvency and consumer activity of the population decreased. There is a reorientation of private customers to cheaper types of delivery of shipments: to points of issue of orders (PVZ) and automatic machines for issuing parcels (checkpoints).

Eiteli of Russia 206 million times used the services of couriers

The difficulties that have arisen in the field of e-commerce, such as the departure of Western online stores and logistics companies with foreign participation from Russia in 2022, provoked a drop in cross-border sales traffic and, accordingly, the number of deliveries by couriers, the study says.

In 2018-2022 the main share in the structure of courier services was made up of individual entrepreneurs, in 2022 there were 3.9 thousand (65.2% of the all-Russian value). In 2018-2021 The number of courier companies in Russia increased by 9.7%: from 5.6 to 6.2 thousand. In 2022, their number decreased by 2.3%, to 6 thousand.

For 2018-2021. the volume of delivery by courier service in Russia increased 1.7 times: from 148.4 to 245.7 million orders. The development of e-commerce, the growing demand for express delivery, the expansion of the geography of supplies contributed to the active growth of the domestic courier services market in previous years.[5]

The State Duma proposed to ban couriers in electric vehicles from using phones without mounts

State Duma deputy Vasily Vlasov proposed banning delivery couriers from using phones without special mounts while driving on electric vehicles. This became known on August 10, 2022.

In his appeal, the legislator noted that one of the main categories of users of electric scooters and electric bicycles for August 2022 was delivery couriers, who, as a rule, use the pedestrian zone and move at a significant speed.

At the same time, often, as he noted, while driving, couriers use the phone without special restraining means: they study the route of movement, call the client, etc. These actions, in his opinion, distract them and pose an immediate threat to other pedestrians, given the weight and speed characteristics of the vehicles used.

In this regard, the deputy asks to consider the advisability of amending regulatory legal acts regarding the introduction of restrictions on the use of a phone without special restraining means by drivers of electric vehicles, which is used for commercial purposes[6].

2021: Increase in salaries of couriers in Moscow to 200 thousand rubles a month due to lack of personnel

By mid-October 2021 Russia , there is an acute shortage of couriers, as a result of which their salaries are growing. Some drivers involved in order delivery To Moscow earn up to 200 thousand rubles per month, and the salaries of foot couriers have increased to 100 thousand rubles, according to the. SuperJob

The data of this service are provided by Vedomosti. The representative of HeadHunter, in a conversation with the publication, said that in September 2021 the number of vacancies for warehouse employees and road carriers increased 3-3.5 times compared to August, and couriers, order collectors and positions with a minimum of experience in logistics - almost 7 times.

Moscow couriers began to earn 200 thousand rubles a month due to a lack of personnel

According to experts, during the November season of sales ("Black Friday") and New Year's purchases, the demand for couriers and marketplaces, as well as sellers of non-food products, traditionally increases.

According to Data Insight, in the first half of 2021, the number of online product orders increased by 268% compared to the same period in 2020 to 118 million, and sales revenue - by 174% to 149 billion rubles.

High salaries for couriers cause internal migration in retail, when full-time employees of offline stores register as self-employed and go to courier services, said a representative of the YouDo Business platform.

Online retailers are taking measures to attract employees. Sabermarket"" recruits staff in all regions of presence, in Yandex"" are ready to stimulate staff with bonuses for going to peak hours, free insurance against accidents at work and paid meals. Delivery Club igooods and are going to expand the Bring a Friend hiring program to almost 20 regions.

Also, market participants create IT solutions to cope with the growth of orders in case of staff shortages. Thus, Samokat, Delivery Club, Sberbank Market and Yandex predict demand taking into account the days of the week, holidays, traffic jams, weather, bring more couriers into the necessary shifts and optimize routes.[7]

2020: After a 40% decrease in the number of migrants, Moscow experienced an acute shortage of food delivery workers

As it became known in October 2020, after a decrease in the number of migrants in Moscow, an acute shortage of food delivery workers arose and the number of customer complaints about undelivered or late orders increased.

The fact that the delivery services for food and ready-made food faced a shortage of couriers, the Kommersant newspaper wrote, citing sources on the market. This information was confirmed by the head of the Yandex.Lavka service Ilya Krasilshchik, adding that "there are a lot of couriers."

According to one of the sources of the publication, the shortage of couriers was provoked by a decrease in the number of migrants in the capital and seasonality. Earlier, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin announced a 40% reduction in the number of migrants in the city in 2020.

There is a concept of seasonality in all city deliveries. Just autumn is the moment when some couriers leave local deliveries due to bad weather. At this moment, recruiting and competition are becoming especially tangible, "Kirill Rodin, co-founder of Kitchen in the Area, shared his opinion on the situation.

The representative of Yandex.Eda said that there are still enough couriers, but the company also feels pressure on the market due to the pandemic and the outflow of migrants. Seasonal factors also have an impact - the beginning of the school year, the call, the company noted.

Delivery services solve the problem of a shortage of couriers in different ways. One of the options is to involve the self-employed from the age of 16 and people with disabilities in the delivery, the source said. Another option is to limit the number of orders through a floating minimum basket. The Yandex.Lavka service has used such a mechanism since its launch, but by October 23, 2002 it makes it possible to choose between paid delivery and the threshold by order.

"Scooter" decided to increase the minimum commission. A service representative told the publication that such a mechanism is being tested in several districts of the capital.[8]
