Tele2 studied what smartphones technologies are most often connected to the company's network. The market has matured for more active use of the technology - eSIM penetration of devices with support - virtual SIM maps in 2023 reached 12%, doubling since 2021. Novice brands -,, Realme Tecno Inifnix - collectively took a 13% share in connections. Tele2 announced this on December 29, 2023.

In 2023, smartphones with support 4G are used by more than 70% of new customers who have connected to Tele2. At the same time, a noticeable trend is an increase in the life cycle of the device for one subscriber. The number of those who changed their smartphone every year has decreased by 8 pp over the past four years. So, in 2019, the share of such customers was 49%, in 2020 - 43%, in 2021 - 45%, and in 2023 it was already 41%. 59% use smartphones for longer than two years. Users demonstrate the greatest loyalty to the brand when changing devices - Apple 66% of users choose again when changing smartphone. iOS Customers who choose follow: they Xiaomi continue to use the same brand in 48% of cases. Users Samsung re-select these devices 43% of the time.

The so-called innovators are actively connecting to the Tele2 network - customers who are the first to master technologies and are ready for a new digital experience. Thus, 9% of the total number of new subscribers come to the operator's network with eSIM-ready devices, their share continues to grow actively.

The rating of common smartphones with eSIM is formed mainly by devices on iOS, smartphones Samsung Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S23 Ultra are in 17th and 18th place in the ranking. The top 5 is as follows:; iPhone 11 iPhone 12 iPhone 13 iPhone XR; , , iPhone 12 PRO MAX.

Tele2 analyzed with smartphones of which brands new subscribers most often come to the company's network. The four leaders in 2021-2023 have not changed and reflect the best-selling devices of past periods. This confirms the general trend towards an increase in the period of use of the smartphone and loyalty to the brand - customers change the operator while preserving the device. The four leaders are the world leaders in smartphone production. These are brands that have been producing reliable devices for many years and have won audience loyalty: Samsung, Xiaomi, Honor, Apple.

The Xiaomi brand (including sub-brands Redmi, Poco, Mi) came out on top, taking a 25% share in new connections. Samsung lost its lead in 2023, shifting to a confident second place (23%). Among the new Tele2 subscribers, there are more users of expensive image devices. Apple devices have risen to third place in the ranking - they have 12% against 10% in 2021.

The Honor brand fell to fourth place - now it has 8% against 11% in 2021. Despite a loyal audience, problems with the separation of the brand from Huawei and the restart of the line led to a loss of sales back in 2020. As a result, even loyal users, when changing devices, were forced to switch to other brands.

Tele2 notes record dynamics among smartphone brands that have shown the greatest activity in the Russian market since 2021. Thus, Realme and Tecno added 4 pp each, taking shares of 5.7% and 5%, respectively, in new connections. Infinix almost from scratch increased its share to 3%. These brands actively promoted a wide line of devices and grew due to sales of new smartphones, despite the lack of a loyal base and sales history at the start.

Users of devices with technology support can activate eSIM through the My Tele2 application, and the operator invited customers to connect eSIM based on the Unified Biometric System.

The potential of the technology is demonstrated by the dynamics of penetration of devices with eSIM support in the Tele2 network. At the end of 2021, their number more than doubled: the share of devices with eSIM support increased among the operator's customers from 3 to 6%. According to Tele2 forecasts, by 2024 devices with this module will occupy 25% of the market. The regions with the largest number of activations were Moscow and St. Petersburg. In the top regions, where the technology is willingly connected, were the Republic of Tatarstan, Krasnodar Territory and the Republic of Adygea, Irkutsk Region.

The top devices registered on the Tele2 network with eSIM support are the iPhone 11/12/13, Samsung S20/S21/S22, Huawei P40, Motorola RAZR and Galaxy Watch 4. Legislative changes made it possible to make the eSIM connection remote, which, along with the penetration of devices with technology support, contributed to an increase in activations. Tele2 has a GSMA certificate for self-generation of profiles for eSIM.

Resume eSIM issuance

According to Deputy Minister of Communications Oleg Ivanov, the Ministry of Telecom and Mass Communications allowed the Tele2 operator to continue the experiment on issuing an eSIM. This became known on September 20, 2019.

According to him, Tele2 resolved issues related to ensuring the security of eSIM use and resumed the issuance of virtual SIM cards in several Moscow communication salons. Both customers who pre-order and new users can get eSIM. However, a limited batch of virtual cards will be issued.

Tele2 began issuing eSIM subscribers in several Moscow salons from April 29, but the next day suspended the issuance, explaining the lack of virtual SIM cards. On May 14, Tele2, at the request of the Ministry of Telecom and Mass Communications, "until all security issues are resolved," stopped the issuance of eSIM.

What problem with the safety of technology was in April, Deputy Minister of Communications Ivanov refused to disclose. According to him, it was a "technical moment" on the operator's network, which did not concern subscribers. As of September 2019, Tele2 corrected it, the FSB checked and approved it, and therefore the operator was allowed to continue the experiment. Subscribers who received eSIM in April can use communication, in relation to them all security issues are also resolved, Ivanov assured.

The test algorithm fully provides subscriber identification, since obtaining an eSIM is no different from obtaining a physical SIM card, says Ivanov. The subscriber physically comes to the operator's communication salon, presents a passport for identification and receives a package with a code for scanning, he explains.

The next step that will need to be implemented is completely remote eSIM acquisition. According to Ivanov, the Ministry of Telecom and Mass Communications has several options for identifying the identity of such subscribers: through a single portal of public services, where you can link eSIM, or in the branches of the MPSC, where special cabins for identifying citizens will appear[1].

ESIM gives us a lot of economic advantages over physical SIM. It is important that the eSIM implemented by us ensures the security and integrity of data transmission when identifying a subscriber. At the initial stage, the number of "electronic" SIM-cards is limited, but the established processes will allow us to quickly increase the necessary stock and avoid shortages. In addition to the development of eSIM, we create a "universal SIM card." We are already working in this direction and are consulting with the relevant departments and government agencies of the Russian Federation to quickly implement our ideas.
