Raster Editing module

Starting with version 20.1, the Raster Editing module appeared, which expanded the platform's capabilities when working with raster images.

The Raster Editing module includes a set of tools for improving the quality of images, their transformation, mining and editing, extracting semantic information (vectorization), semi-automatic tracing of vector primitives and text recognition, as well as for rasterizing the arbitrary type of data supported by the nanoCAD platform. The module is part of the nanoCAD Pro configuration. In the basic configuration of the commercial version of nanoCAD Plus, this functionality is limited to the tools of four-point correction, alignment, trimming, settings for the display of the screen.

nanoCAD SPDS module

The table editor has functionality that increases the convenience of working with big data. For example, contextual control buttons allow you to add or remove rows, and column sorting functions customize the desired gradation even in complex tables. The visual representation of formulas can now be turned off - this significantly increases the speed of work in the editor when using complex formulas.

The update also affected other design elements: the Break and Break commands now hide hatches and contours of spaces below them, the SPDS texts implement the font size setting for fractions and indexes, and numbering options have appeared in the technical requirements.

Module nanoCAD Mechanics

In this version of the nanoCAD Mechanics module, the technical requirements editor has been improved, the functionality of which is so important for designers in drawing. Another upgrade to 20.1 is the advanced 3D scanning capabilities included with nanoCAD Pro under the current license (or nanoCAD Plus + Raster Editing).

nanoCAD Plus 10.1

On November 13, 2018, Nanosoft introduced nanoCAD Plus 10.1: an updated version of the domestic CAD platform.

Version 10.1 of the nanoCAD Plus platform is the emergence of additional and development of existing functionality based on the principles and technologies of the 10th version.

Nanosoft noted that one of the main changes to version 10.1 is the modular licensing system. Point Clouds module introduced in nanoCAD Plus 10.1

nanoCAD Plus 6.0 is a commercial software product designed for design organizations and private designers who want to improve the efficiency of work. To use the product in commercial mode, you must either be the owner of a subscription that gives the right to use nanoCAD for a certain period (7000 rubles/r.m./year), or purchase a boxed version that does not limit the time of use of the product (20,000 rubles/r.m.).

Along with the announcement of the version, the development company announced a partial renaming of the product: in connection with the release of the international version, the naming of the Russian version of the nanoCAD platform is brought to a single form.

nanoCAD testing on Nvidia Grid server virtualization system

Nanosoft, together with Arbyte (Arbyte Computers), tested the operation of the domestic CAD system nanoCAD on a server virtualization system using Nvidia Grid technology in the summer of 2014. This system allows you to combine several design workstations in one physical server without losing the performance of the graphics subsystem of the stationary workplace.

During testing, we looked for answers to the following questions:

  • What will be the performance?
  • Does it make sense for designers to switch from traditional workstations to virtual workplaces, or is it only rational if they have low-performance or outdated machines?
  • Should I even think about using these technologies?

Virtualization system

The system on which the testing was carried out is an ARBYTE software and hardware complex with an infrastructure organized on virtual machines and includes virtual desktops and two servers responsible for connecting and authorizing users. The graphics is provided by the NVIDIA GRID K1 card, which allows you to organize up to 16 virtual workplaces. If necessary, you can install several cards in the complex, but as part of this testing, we considered this inappropriate. The overall performance of the server system varies depending on the organization of the disks and the number of simultaneously running virtual machines.

Graphics performance can be improved by replacing GRID K1 cards with GRID K2, reducing the number of workstations, but each virtual machine will be provided with greater graphics performance.

What was tested

nanoCAD, like its foreign counterpart, AutoCAD uses a single processor core. Moreover, the higher the processor frequency, the faster the program works. Graphic processor is needed mainly for drawing an image. In the process, video memory and, slightly, a video card processor are also used. The amount of video memory is important when working with the application. The more open the project, the more it needs.

The main objective of the study was to test the overall performance of nanoCAD in conjunction with NVIDIA GRID technology and see the final performance. The work was carried out over the Internet, with the creation of a VPN tunnel to the ARBYTE network, and then directly from the local network to eliminate the possible influence of the channel speed.

The test took place on two laptops, while the results were recorded in several screen resolution options. The built-in nanoCAD performance test took the FPS value when working under OpenGL and DirectX (nanoCAD allows you to switch). The real FPS was also measured from laptop screens. The test was conducted for the 64-bit and 32-bit versions of nanoCAD 6, as well as the free version of nanoCAD 5.1 free.

Testing took place using GRID K140Q and K120Q profiles. The K140Q profile allows you to organize 16 virtual machines (VMs) on one GRID K1 card, while 1 GB of video memory is allocated for each VM. This mode is optimal for CAD users. The K120Q profile allows you to organize 32 virtual machines on one GRID K2 card, with 512 MB of video memory allocated for each VM. This profile is more suitable for the work of office users, allowing you to get 2 times higher density of virtual desktops.

Speed of operation in GRID K120Q and K140Q modes

First of all, it was necessary to understand whether the working mode of the map when working in nanoCAD would matter.

So, let's look at the graphs that we received when working over the Internet. You can see that there is no significant difference in the different operating modes of the NVIDIA card. However, the graphics from nanoCAD 5.1 free show the FPS falling in K140Q mode. Most likely, this is due to a decrease at the time of measuring the access channel in the office, and not some features of the K140Q mode.

Speed of work via the Internet and on the local network

Interestingly, on the local network, we got higher values ​ ​ for a weaker laptop. But the more powerful, on the contrary, showed slightly worse results compared to working via the Internet. Although the average FPS values were taken, it is possible that these results are a statistical error. In addition, the results obtained can confirm the fact that in this case the power of the end device is not critical. The main thing is that it is enough to process the incoming video stream. The main work with graphics takes place on the visualization server using its resources.

Now let's see how the remote location of the target devices affects the operation. Let's compare the average FPS for different versions of the program when organizing work via the Internet and on the local network.

The results obtained allow us to conclude that there is no significant difference in the speed of the application. Only temporary degradation of connection speed can have an impact, as already seen above. Therefore, when organizing remote workplaces, special attention should be paid to ensuring the maximum bandwidth of the network and its "responsiveness. This is important for comfortable work.

Conclusions

When working in nanoCAD with large files, such as a geo-base or other graphics-rich drawings, you need to have good hardware resources. Previously, the need to organize efficient graphics processing was an obstacle to moving the designer's workplaces to the cloud. However, with the advent of the NVIDIA GRID/Citrix technology bundle, the situation has changed. Virtual desktops can now combine the benefits of remote application access and powerful graphics. This allows you to comfortably work with a remote server from anywhere and from any end devices - laptops, tablets, smartphones.

In terms of performance, such a solution will not be inferior to the "traditional" workplace, and depending on the server configuration, it may show even higher results. Below you can see a comparison of the results of work on the same laptop of the basic configuration using your own resources and when transferring work to the cloud.

From the outside, it may seem that, in general, the programs work about the same. But in reality, when using a laptop to work in a virtualized environment, you can see a significant increase in the smoothness of operations and overall performance.

Batch printing

Working with Viewports

In the new version of nanoCAD, we have improved the mechanism for selecting objects - now you just need to click on the object group and nanoCAD will show a dialogue with those objects that are currently located under the cursor. You will only be required to specify what exactly you want to choose: block, line, leader, one click to select everything or refuse to select.

And if you select part of the drawing with a border and filter by object type in the Properties window, two new buttons are activated in the line above: Exclude from selection and Leave in selection. It is very convenient if something superfluous got into the choice.

Small, but important, fixes include automatic drawing regeneration: if you turn off the weight of lines or hatches, you no longer need to click the image rebuild button (REGEN command). The Named Viewports tab adds a shortcut menu that allows you to rename or delete named viewport configurations. In previous versions of the program, the operation of deleting named viewport configurations was available only from the command line, and you could not rename the viewport configuration.

A new option, Color-Dependent Mode, has been added to the Print dialog. Controls the display of plot style tables in the Plot Style Table drop-down list. When the check box is selected, the list displays color-dependent plot styles (*.ctb), when the check box is cleared, named (*.stb).
