2023: The number of communication salons in major cities of Russia decreased by 5.5%

Over the year, from March 2022 to March 2023, the number of offline communication salons in Russian million-plus cities decreased by 5.5%. This is evidenced by the data of the 2GIS service, which were released at the end of March 2023.

The strongest fall was recorded in Omsk - by 14.7%. In Moscow, Rostov-on-Don, Nizhny Novgorod and Novosibirsk, there are 7% fewer communication salons. Tele2 said that they reduced the number of points by 1.6%, in MTS - by 4%, to 5390. The MTS spokesman said the company will continue to reduce the number of salons by closing points with a small flow and opening them in more favorable places.

Revenue from phone sales from MTS in the second quarter of 2022 fell by 47%, from Tele2 - by 12%. The reasons for the operators were problems with the supply of equipment, a decrease in the purchasing power of the population and an unstable dollar exchange rate.

Analysts predict a continuation of the trend. According to them, the decrease in the number of communication salons began during the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic: in 2020 they decreased by 15%, in 2021 - by 3%. In addition, during coronavirus restrictions, Russians began to buy digital equipment online more often, receiving it at the points of issue of orders for marketplaces.

At the same time, M.Video-Eldorado states that, despite the fact that online purchases have become a daily practice, stores remain a key element for Russians when choosing and buying equipment, 85% of customers make operations using retail infrastructure.

According to Anton Fomin, a business analyst at F + tech - Marvell, in the future, operators will begin to open communication salons again, since the points act as a marketing tool. The expert explained that network owners sell not a separate product, but a "comprehensive service[1]

2016: Residents of Perm are provided with mobile phone stores better than in any other city of the Russian Federation with a population of more than 1 million people

Perm can be called the capital of cellular retail in Russia. According to the city information service 2GIS as of March [2], in the administrative center of the Perm Territory, residents are provided with mobile phone stores better than in any other city of the Russian Federation with a population of more than 1 million people.

A little more than 40 years ago, the first cell phone call was made in New York, April 3 has since been considered the birthday of a mobile phone. On the eve of this memorable technological date, 2GIS studied the provision of Russian millionaires with communication salons. Service analysts compared the 15 largest cities in the country by the number of points of sale of mobile phones per 100 thousand inhabitants.

The first place was taken by Perm. The city has 36 cellular salons per 100 thousand inhabitants. The closest to the leader was Omsk and Novosibirsk, in addition to them, Krasnoyarsk and Chelyabinsk also entered the top 5.

St. Petersburg and Moscow took 8th and 13th places, respectively. The capitals are distinguished by the largest absolute number of points of sale of mobile phones. There are about 3,400 of them in Moscow, more than 1,500 in St. Petersburg (for comparison: there are fewer than 400 such stores in Perm). However, in terms of the number of inhabitants, the most populated cities have more modest indicators. The capital has 22 cell phone salons per 100 thousand inhabitants, in St. Petersburg - 28.

For the year - from March 2015 to March 2016 - the number of points of sale of mobile phones in millionaires, according to 2GIS, increased by 5%. The largest increase was noted in Rostov-on-Don (+ 25.3%), Nizhny Novgorod (+ 17.9%) and Samara (+ 17.3%).

2009: Share of Euroset - 31%, Svyaznoy - 22%

In the 1st half of 2009, Svyaznoy's share among cellular retailers increased by 6 pp to 22%, while Euroset did not change (31%), according to the report of ex-Euroset marketer Vladimir Bogdanov. The reason is the departure of competitors.

  2. 2016, the study examined cities with a population of one million in Russia, taking into account satellites and nearby settlements. Their population was taken according to Rosstat as of January 1, 2015. The number of organizations is given according to the 2GIS for March 2016 (heading "Mobile phones"). A total of 9,855 organizations were considered. The change in the number of organizations in the 2GIS is a consequence of their opening and closing, but this is not the only reason. The number of firms in a particular area of activity (heading) may be influenced, for example, by the expansion of the list of services by existing enterprises (for example, the sale of computers is supplemented with mobile phones), reformatting businesses (the restaurant has become a cafe). The organization can be temporarily removed from the service due to suspension of activities until the moment of resumption of work. 2GIS specialists collect and refine information daily, the entire database of organizations is checked at least twice a year.
