According to Deputy Minister of Transport of Russia Dmitry Bakanov, St. Petersburg is one of the Russian leaders in terms of the development of new technologies in transport. Various options are available: electronic card "Podorozhnik," bank cards ("Unified card of St. Petersburg") and payment by mobile phone. Payment means are also implemented using a mobile application and through the SBP.

This system works using geolocation on a smartphone: a special application monitors the routes and speed of the user's movement around the city by geometry during the day. True, according to Bakanov, the work of such a service is complicated by the binding to geodata.

In mid-February 2024, the administration of St. Petersburg presented an updated draft program for the development of the urban transport system. It says about the allocation of 1.7 trillion rubles from the city budget. Expenses in the amount of 300 million rubles from extrabudgetary sources are also planned.

With the money included in the program for the development of the transport system of St. Petersburg, it is planned to build roads in residential areas, create understudies of the main highways and interchanges, and update the rolling stock of public transport.

The authorities of St. Petersburg have prepared an updated draft program for the development of the urban transport system.

As noted by the publication "Fontanka," the project includes the construction of the Big Smolensk Bridge and the Latitudinal Highway of High-Speed ​ ​ Traffic (SHMSD) and seven metro stations. For maintenance and cleaning of roads without tenders, it is planned to reorganize city enterprises into budgetary institutions. By 2029, it is planned to maintain the share of regulatory road surfaces at 71.2%.

It is planned to gradually update the rolling stock of the metro and ground transport. For example, in the metro, reconstruct escalators and trains. And for ground transport, purchase new trolleybuses, buses and trams, build parks for gas-powered buses in Kamenka and Gorelovo. Recall that in October last year  , the construction of a fleet of electric buses on Rzhevka began. About 128 billion rubles will be allocated for the modernization of the ground transport fleet and the reconstruction of contact networks.

Work with bicycle paths will continue, by 2030 it is planned to create more than 500 new routes. In 2023  , three bike paths with a total length of 6.6 km appeared in St. Petersburg, another 10 km is supposed to be built in 2024.

At the same time, the document attributed a three-stage priority system, where first there is a pedestrian, then public transport, then cars. The passport also includes information according to which 66.2% of Petersburgers are satisfied with the state of the city's transport system. The target is 89.4%.[2]
