2025: Import substitution of UPS: What are purchased in Russia after the departure of Schneider Electric and Eaton - TA opinions
After the start of SVO and the subsequent sanctions, the Russian IT market was abandoned by large Western companies, including manufacturers of uninterruptible power supplies (UPS). However, companies and the public sector were not left without equipment, and Russian vendors took the place of the departed brands. About how the situation in the UPS market is developing, its participants told TAdviser in mid-February 2025.
Vasily Mochar, director of the analytical company ITResearch, told TAdviser that APC by Schneider Electric, Eaton, Huawei and Vertiv, which are previously leading in the Russian infrastructure market, left it almost simultaneously in mid-2022, and since then domestic manufacturers have been confidently increasing capacity and sales, replacing them in all segments. According to the expert, in 2023, sales of uninterruptible power supplies in the Russian Federation even noticeably exceeded pre-crisis indicators, although in 2024 the growth rate slightly decreased due to the exhaustion of the first wave of demand for local data centers and an increase in the key rate.
According to ITResearch estimates, Russian brands in 2024 accounted for about 50% of sales of all types of UPS in Russia, and in the infrastructure segment their share was even higher. Russian companies that have launched UPS production in the Russian Federation include such large players as Parus-Electro, Impulse and Cyber Electro. Vasily Mochar stressed that Russian brands are feeling confident in the market: their products are purchased, including for large data centers, customers already fully trust them.
Marvel Distribution confirms that by the beginning of 2025, Russian UPS manufacturers fully meet the needs of customers who planned the transition to domestic equipment. However, some companies still purchase UPSs from foreign vendors for parallel imports.
The reasons here are different: some do it because of corporate standards, the availability of up-to-date certificates or spare parts, others - out of an old habit. Nevertheless, the number of customers who rely on imported products is decreasing every year. At the same time, we record an increase in demand for equipment included in the register of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, especially for single-phase and three-phase UPS, which can be purchased by 44-FZ and 223-FZ, - explained in Marvel Distribution |
The company notes that the Russian UPS market by 2025 is characterized by an increase in the number of manufacturers: previously there were no more than a dozen of them, but now the number has exceeded 60. But the Russian market is too small for such a number of UPS manufacturers, so gradually weak players will disappear by themselves, IT distributor experts predict.
Alexey Gubin, Head of Integrated Sales Business Development at OCS, drew attention to such a trend in the UPS market as the arrival of Russian vendors in related segments. They not only expand the range of uninterruptible power supplies, but also begin to offer the market server cabinets, PDUs, air conditioning and climate management systems, etc.
According to Gubin, the state plays a significant role in the development of domestic UPS manufacturers: the presence of products in the register of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation allows Russian vendors to find large customers from among business and state organizations. The representative of OCS predicts a slight increase in UPS sales in Russia by the end of 2025, as well as an increase in the share of domestic vendors.
Oleg Chumakov, director of business development at Arbait (a manufacturer of computer components), said that Russian UPS manufacturers have made significant progress in developing and implementing their solutions. At the same time, Chinese brands also occupy a significant share in the Russian market, and Huawei and APC by Schneider Electric products continue to enter the market using parallel imports. Chinese UPSs often attract buyers with a lower price and a wide range, but the quality and level of service can vary, Chumakov warned.
Deputy Technical Director of 3data HyperScale Vasily Mikheenko, speaking about the work of Chinese brands, noted that some of them have strengthened quality control focused on compliance with Russian standards and requirements. This certainly improves the reliability and safety of the products supplied, but does not solve the problem of dependence on imported components, the source told TAdviser.
Alexey Volkov, head of the C3 Tech power backup and distribution systems (part of the S3 Group), says that in the modular UPS segment there are systems with the "Made in Russia" label, but this is just a convention - the devices are manufactured outside the Russian Federation, mainly in China.
The range of customers of such uninterruptible power supplies is quite wide, and investments can be justified. However, to reach the level of countries that have long been engaged in their production, it will take a significant time or a powerful technological leap, the expert believes. |
Denis Lesun, product manager of the UPS category of X-Com Group, confirms that, speaking of Russian-made UPS, models from the register of the Ministry of Industry and Trade are not always meant. First of all, we are talking about devices that are positioned as UPS, assembled from components in Russia. In addition, the register is still stricter, more and more requirements appear there, and manufacturers constantly have to make changes to their products in order to fall under more and more new requirements imposed by the register, Lesun emphasized.
Roman Shmakov, First Deputy General Director for IT Solutions Market at System Electric, says that Chinese brands have indeed taken a significant market share, especially in the small and medium-sized capacity segment. However, the company doubts that this is a long-term trend. More and more customers are aware of the risks of dependence on Asian supplies and make a choice in favor of local solutions, Shmakov said.
Director of the Department for the Development of New Products Energon (the company produces UPS) Alexander Bespalov says that the departure of international players led to a reduction in the availability of service and spare parts, which increased the cost of maintenance and complicated the operation of equipment. According to the expert, the UPS market until 2022 was controlled by three manufacturers: Schneider Electric, Vertiv and Eaton. But by 2025, the leaders are Ippon, Cyber Power and Powercom, as well as Russian manufacturers Parus and Impulse, Bespalov claims. He added that most UPSs and power distribution units are manufactured at several large factories in Asia and are supplied under different brands. Also, data center operators actively use Russian-Chinese UPS "hybrids" in their work, the solutions of which are adapted to domestic standards and requirements.
2024
The Russian UPS market decreased by 12.6% and amounted to 1.35 million devices. Leaders
The volume of sales of uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) of alternating current in Russia in 2024 amounted to 1.35 million devices in the amount of $402 million, which is 12.6% less in quantitative terms and 8.1% in monetary terms compared to 2023. Such data on February 13, 2025 are given in the report of the analytical company ITResearch.
According to ITBestsellers, in the fourth quarter of 2024, 363.5 thousand were sold in Russia. UPS worth $121 million at a weighted average cost of one device of $333. Compared to the same period in 2023, the market contracted by 16% in quantitative terms.
The leaders of the UPS market in the fourth quarter of 2024 with almost equal indicators were:
They are followed by Impuls and Powercom with minimal lag. These five brands accounted for 48% of the market, which indicates a high level of competition in the segment.
According to the results of the whole 2024, the integral results were distributed as follows - the first positions with the same indicators were occupied by CyberPower, Ippon and Impuls. Behind them are Powercom and Parus. The combined share of these manufacturers amounted to 46.6% of the market, demonstrating the strengthening of positions by the end of the year.
Despite a significant decrease in indicators in 2024, compared to the pre-crisis 2021, the UPS market showed an increase of 2% in quantitative terms and 10% in monetary terms. This indicates the continuation of the upward trend in the development of the Russian market for uninterruptible power supplies.
ITResearch analysts note that in the fourth quarter of 2024 there was an increase in the position of leading manufacturers, which affected the increase in their total market share from 46.6% to 48%.
Overall, despite the decline in sales volumes in 2024, the UPS market is showing signs of stability and retains the potential for further growth, which is confirmed by the positive dynamics relative to 2021 indicators.[1]
Skolkovo and TAdviser experts: the Russian UPS solutions market did not avoid "growth diseases"
The Skolkovo Foundation (ВЭБ.РФ Group), together with the TAdviser Analytical Center, has published a new report comparing suppliers of platform solutions and software for integrated business supply chain planning (UPS). The review contains an assessment of supply and demand in the context of a change in the business environment, a list of leading Russian vendors and their competitive advantages, as well as the results of a survey of end customers and analytical conclusions on the market. Read more here.
2023
The Russian UPS market for the year grew by 40.5% to $438 million
In 2023, approximately 1.54 million uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) were sold in Russia in the amount of about $438 million. In unit terms, the growth in relation to 2022 amounted to 36.8%, in monetary terms - 40.5%. Such data are given in the ITResearch study, the results of which were published in early May 2024.
It is noted that until 2007 in the Russian Federation there was a period of rapid growth in sales of mass UPS, associated with the primary saturation of the market with computers and servers. However, then the market moved into the "secondary sales" phase, when equipment is purchased mainly to replace already installed devices. As of the beginning of 2023, about 5.97 million mass UPSs, about 1.4 million "light" corporate devices and 201 thousand "heavy" UPSs were in real operation in Russia. A total of 7.56 million UPSs were used. For comparison, in 2018, the indicator was estimated at 8.68 million units. Analysts attribute the significant reduction to the formed geopolitical situation, due to which many foreign suppliers left the Russian market. Moreover, the observed decrease in the installed UPS base was primarily due to the mass segment, while the corporate sector actually remained at the same level or even grew in certain segments.
While the mass market as a whole has stagnated, corporate UPSs are increasing sharply, which was obviously due to the advanced development of corporate and commercial IT systems, the study said. |
Several device topologies are presented on the UPS market: these are backup (Off-line) and interactive (Line-interactive) solutions, as well as double conversion (On-line) models. Redundant and interactive UPSs form the mass market and provide more than 80% of all sales in unit terms. At the same time, as stated in the study, the segment of interactive UPS is divided into two categories, which differ markedly in market positioning. These are devices with an approximated sinusoid (AS) at the output when working from batteries and UPS with a clean sinusoid (SIN). The latter belong to the corporate class, representing relatively expensive and high-quality equipment. With a relatively small market share in pieces, such solutions are one of the three most important subsegments of the market in monetary terms.
The Off-line and Line-interactive AS UPS segments are focused primarily on the mainstream application market: such devices are used to protect desktop PCs. However, Line-interactive SIN and On-line UPSs of less than 3 kVA are mainly used to protect servers and network equipment in case no installation work is required, and one UPS protects an individual load or a small group of devices. An On-line UPS with a capacity above 3 kVA is a "heavy" installed device designed to protect groups of IT equipment.
The study notes that the mass segment is losing ground in the Russian UPS market. In the early 2000s, it accounted for about 90% of the market in unit terms. However, at the end of 2023, the figure dropped to less than 80%. In money, this sector fell to just over 20%, and the main part of the market is divided approximately in half by the "light" corporate and "heavy" segments.
Against the background of sanctions, such large foreign suppliers as APC by Schneider Electric, Eaton, ABB, Legrand, Vertiv, etc. left the Russian UPS market in 2022. These players collectively controlled more than 50% of the industry in money. At the same time, other companies occupied the vacant niche, which is why the format of the industry has changed dramatically. For some brands (primarily APC, Eaton, Huawei), tangible deliveries for parallel imports continue. Analysts attribute this to forced circumstances for a number of corporate customers. The fact is that many of them have formed a huge fleet of UPSs, which are not so easy to replace with products from other manufacturers. Sometimes it is easier, noticeably overpaid, to order delivery on parallel imports than to get problems with the compatibility and manageability of the entire system. In this regard, the share of some foreign players remains significant, especially in money, which is explained by the high cost of these devices.
At the end of 2022, Ippon held the leadership in the Russian UPS market in monetary terms. Next came APC by Schneider Electric, CyberPower and Powercom. In 2023, due to sanctions restrictions, the situation changed. The top three were Powercom, CyberPower and Ippon. This is followed by Parus and Impuls, which are mainly focused on "heavy" equipment. In total, the group of leaders in 2023 accounted for 42.5% of the entire Russian UPS market in money and 62.5% in pieces. At the same time, the number of players in the market under consideration is increasing: ITK (Electra), Hiden, EKF, Absolute Solutions and Smartwatt UPS from Energon, the largest supplier of JSCB, entered it.
Sanctions pressure has led to a revision of approaches to ensuring the security of business and the public sector, forcing the whole country to build data centers with accelerated methods and leave foreign clouds. This is primarily due to the surge in demand for infrastructure UPS, which will seriously support the market in the coming years, the report notes.[2] |
Market growth in the second quarter by 78% to 374 thousand units
The volume of the Russian market with an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) in the second quarter of 2023 reached 374 thousand units, an increase of a record 78% compared to the same period in 2022. In monetary terms, equipment sales increased by 45.6% and amounted to $94.1 million. This is evidenced by the data of ITResearch analysts, published in August 2023.
The different dynamics of piece and cash indicators is due to the fact that the recovery of the market first of all took place in the mass segment. The balance of power in the market has also changed: the "grandees" (with their traditionally high prices) were replaced by Russian and Chinese manufacturers, the study notes.
In general, analysts attribute the sharp growth of the market to the fact that the comparison is with the low indicators of 2022. In addition, deferred demand and improved supply, as well as a more active waste of budget money (state-owned companies did not postpone purchases, as usual, at the end of the year) shifted sales to the first half of 2023.
The market is definitely growing, and this is due not only to the increase in production capacities of manufacturers, but also to changes in consumer habits and preferences towards sufficient functionality of sufficient and appearance, "Vladimir Bondarenko, business development manager at DiSi Engineering LLC, told Rossiyskaya Gazeta. - Most ordinary consumers give, oddly enough, a lot of attention to design. The functionality usually requires: a wider range of input voltages when operating from the network without switching to operation from the UPS, a larger number of output interfaces for connecting consumers, lower overall characteristics while maintaining power and higher efficiency values.[3] |
2022:17% market decline, to 1.13 million units
The volume of the Russian uninterruptible power supply (UPS) market in 2022 amounted to 1.13 million units, having decreased by 17% compared to the previous year. Sales of devices in monetary terms decreased by 14%, to $312 million. ITResearch analysts released such data in February 2023.
Integrally, 2022 turned out to be not as bad as previously imagined... Much less than everyone imagined in the spring, when the sanctions processes began, the researchers write. |
According to them, in 2022, many large foreign manufacturers left the Russian UPS market, including Schneider Electric, Eaton, ABB, Legrand and Vertiv. Also, a number of serious manufacturers, without formally leaving the market, "went underground." But they were actively replaced by new, primarily Russian manufacturers. According to ITResearch analysts, the share of equipment produced domestically (at least with a certificate) by the end of 2022 has already approached 15% in money.
Ippon became the largest manufacturer of UPS in the Russian market in 2022. It is followed by APC by Schneider Electric thanks to the serious groundwork of the first months of the year, followed by the CyberPower and Powercom brands. According to experts, during the year the competition intensity index (Gerfindal, the sum of squares of market shares of players) decreased from 0.11 to 0.069. This is direct evidence of the collapse of the former monopolist and the transition of the market to a state of super-intense competition, they explained.
Analysts said that by the end of 2022, the Russian UPS market began to recover. According to ITResearch, during the fourth quarter of 2022, UPS sales in Russia amounted to about 400 thousand units worth about $109 million. Compared to the previous quarter, the market grew by 25% in quantitative terms and by 45% in monetary terms. The significant growth of the market is explained by the fact that at the end of 2022 the situation with the replacement of the products of the largest vendors, which mainly worked in the infrastructure segment and left Russia due to sanctions, improved, the study says.
ITResearch also draws attention to the fact that in April-June 2022, 210 thousand were sold on the Russian market. UPS worth $64.5 million Compared to the previous three months, sales were up 5% in pieces and 2.5% in money. The researchers called this result "fantastic," given the departure of many vendors. But, according to analysts, such indicators did not come as a surprise, since the UPS market is largely design, so the devices themselves were produced quite a long time ago, continued to go and drive, and be supplied to customers.
In total, 410 thousand were sold in Russia in the first half of 2022. UPS worth $127 million The dynamics on an annualized basis amounted to minus 19% in units and minus 13% in physical terms. Despite the departure of a number of UPS market leaders, the process of replacing them is easier than in other industries. It is impossible to reliably calculate the share of "purely Russian" UPSs, since even local brands do not have the entire assortment already produced in the Russian Federation.
ITResearch believes that by 2022 only about 7-8% of devices sold are of Russian origin, but this is clearly more than in 2021. But the greatest beneficiaries of what happened were Chinese brands, which turned out to be in demand more than ever, and at the same time for the most part did not have problems with supplies, experts added.[4]
2018
The Russian uninterruptible power supply market showed slight growth: in 2018, 1,235,672 UPSs were sold in Russia, which is 9% more than in 2017. In money, growth was 3.4%, reaching $258.9 million, according to IDC research.
2016
According to the analytical publication IT-Research, a total of 1.08 million uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) were sold on the Russian UPS market for a total of $292.6 million . Which corresponds to an annual increase of 4.5% in physical terms and 9.2% in monetary terms.
According to analysts, among the product segments of UPS, the most noticeable growth in the Russian market is demonstrated by two: linear-interactive and online models. At the same time, sales of linear-interactive devices are growing in pieces, but practically do not change in money, which indicates an increase in the share of deliveries of cheaper models. On the other hand, online UPSs show an increase in both the monetary and the number of delivered units of goods. Despite the fact that the supply of online models in pieces is growing at a faster pace than in money, in dollar terms, the sale of this category of devices on the Russian market has exceeded 50%, making this direction one of the most important for manufacturers and their partners.
A small positive trend in 2015 was noted in the Russian market and in the segment of SMART devices, which include linear-interactive UPS with a pure output voltage sinusoid.
2013
According to ITResearch, in just 2013, 1.95 million UPSs worth $503.6 million were sold on the Russian market. The annual dynamics was -17% in pieces and -9% in money. The discrepancy in the dynamics of natural and monetary indicators is due to the outstripping growth in sales of "heavy" devices. In general, the results of 2013 turned out to be significantly worse than analysts' forecasts.
The top five overall market leaders include Delta Electronics, Eaton, IPPON (Ippon Technologies), Powercom and Schneider Electric, which controlled almost 80% of the market in money. CyberPower (Cyber Power Systems) is also noticeable on the mass market. Emerson and General Electric can also be noted in the infrastructure solutions market .
2012
The growth of the UPS market in 2012 was 8%, which is significantly lower than the relative indicator last year - in 2011 the growth was 13%, and in 2010 - 26%. The main reason for the slowdown in the overall growth of the market, experts call a sharp decline in sales in the field of personal UPS (<1 кВА), который вырос за 2012 год всего на 5%. Для сравнения — в 2010–11 гг. рост этого сегмента составил вдвое больше — 10%.
According to the results of the IDC analytical report, Schneider Electric retained its leading position in 2012, taking 53% of the Russian UPS market. This is more than the share of all other producers in total, and 1% higher compared to 2011.
2011
According to IDC, the Russian uninterruptible power supply (UPS) market grew by 19% in 2011. At the same time, experts did not note any fundamental changes in the market structure. Among the powerful three-phase UPSs, according to IDC, the UPS segment with a capacity of more than 100 kV • A increased faster than others. In 2011, it accounted for 13% of the total Russian UPS market.
2010
In the pre-crisis years, the Russian market UPS developed significantly faster than the entire IT market, but in 2009 it was among the most affected by the crisis. Then, according to analysts, ITResearch it rolled back to the level of 2004, falling by more than 40% both in pieces and in money. But last year, the UPS market, like some other markets largely focused on the corporate segment, recovered at a faster pace.
Uninterruptible power supply sales grew steadily throughout 2010, and the recovery rate did not decrease until the end of 2010.
According to ITResearch, 385 thousand were sold in the first quarter of 2010. UPS for $67 million The indicators of the same quarter of 2009 were exceeded by 26% in pieces and by 27% in money. According to analysts, an almost synchronous increase in natural and monetary indicators at the beginning of the year indicated a proportionate growth of the market in both the mass and infrastructure segments.
In the second quarter, 400 thousand were sold. UPS, which is 37% more than in the same quarter of 2009. In monetary terms, the growth was even more significant - 50%. As ITResearch analysts noted, "unlike other markets, in the UPS market, the seasonal factor showed an excess of the levels of the second quarter over the first, which is largely due to the activation of the tender market, traditionally weak at the beginning of the year." Deferred demand for infrastructure solutions began to be realized. In the second quarter, a sharp increase in sales of online solutions was recorded, which was reflected in the weighted average price of devices sold - it increased to $ 204 (in the first quarter - $ 174).
Similar trends were observed in the third quarter, during which 550 thousand were sold. UPS. This is 34% more than in the same quarter of 2009, and in monetary terms the market grew by 50.7%.
According to ITResearch, the IV quarter of last year turned out to be very successful. More than 730 thousand were sold. UPS over $163 million Compared to the same quarter of 2009, the market grew by 27.5% in pieces and 62.4% in money.
In total, according to ITResearch, more than 2.1 million were sold in 2010. UPS worth about $430 million, for the year the market added 33% in pieces and 53% in money.
Analyst firm IDC gives more modest estimates. "The volume of the Russian UPS market in 2010 amounted to about $380 million," said Ismail Belov, a leading analyst at IDC in Russia and the CIS. "This means that sales of'uninterruptible' equaled the level of 2007 and exceeded the level of 2009 by almost a quarter ($305 million), but have not yet reached the level of 2008 (about $395 million)." According to IDC, approximately 1.9 million pieces of equipment were delivered to Russia in 2010.
Differences in IDC and ITResearch estimates appear to be influenced by the specifics of analysis and calculation techniques.
