The mathematics was the cornerstone of exact natural sciences at all times, and together with mechanics was the base of all technical science, the main tool in knowledge of the general patterns of the universe.
In 2020 only among managers of departments and laboratories of faculty nine academicians and six corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
History
2011: Preparation according to own standards of MSU
Since 2011 training of specialists at mekhaniko-mathematical faculty is performed according to own educational standards of MSU in "Fundamental mathematics and mechanics".
2007: Opening of a magistracy in the directions "Mathematician", "Mechanics and Mathematical Modelling", "Mathematics and Computer Sciences"
In 2007 at mekhaniko-mathematical faculty the magistracy in the directions "Mathematician", "Mechanics and Mathematical Modelling", "Mathematics and Computer Sciences" is open.
1993: Start of training of specialists of an economic profile
Reflection of the increasing role of mathematical methods in economy is the preparation begun in 1993 at mekhaniko-mathematical faculty of specialists of an economic profile based on fundamental mathematical education.
1933: Formation of mekhaniko-mathematical faculty
In 1933 reorganization of structure of the Moscow university led to formation of several faculties, among them there was also a mekhaniko-mathematical faculty. The big role in its creation and development was played by the corresponding member of Academy of Sciences of the USSR V.V. Golubev, academicians I.G. Petrovsky, A.N. Kolmogorov, P.S. Alexandrov. The faculty always supported by the graduates the academic science, and, on the contrary, many members of Academy of Sciences and the staff of the academic institutes conducted pedagogical work at faculty.
1900: The Moscow mathematical school purchased the world popularity
By the beginning of the 20th century the Moscow mathematical school purchased world fame, its progress was connected with names of D.F. Egorov and his pupils N.N. Luzin, I.I. Privalov, V.V. Stepanov. The school of mechanics of the Moscow university was glorified by N.E. Zhukovsky, S.A. Chaplygin.
1755: Beginning of lectures on mathematics
Lectures on mathematics were given at the Moscow university since its opening in 1755. Creation of department of physical and mathematical sciences was for the first time enshrined in the Charter of the university adopted in 1804.

In the 21st century the value of mathematics strongly increased in the general system of human knowledge. Using mathematical methods nuclear reactors are calculated, the structure of crystals and molecules of chemicals is studied, the place and a depth of minerals are predicted, weather is predicted, economic processes are analyzed and management of the economic systems is optimized, diagnoses of diseases are made, unknown letters are decrypted, outputs of sociological researches are proved. Mathematical methods are base and for modern information technologies.
Scientists of MSU made a powerful contribution to development of the major directions of mathematics. University mathematical school — one of the most authoritative in the world. For 2020 mekhaniko-mathematical faculty — the leading center of mathematical science in Russia.
Mechanics — one of the main components of the scientific base of the equipment. Scientists-mechanics investigate and develop mathematical models of the movement and interaction of bodies, particles, masses, study mechanical properties of different environments. Mechanics create theoretical bases of methods of the calculations applicable in the different industries of the equipment and the industry including other sciences. These methods allow to investigate specific constructions and objects. At the same time the interests of modern mechanics stretch widely for a framework of purely technical issues. The mechanics develops predictive models and methods of fundamental ecology, biomechanics, the theory of collective behavior of set of organisms and self-regulating engineering devices.
Achievements of mechanics of MSU are conventional and are world-renowned, they had significant effect on development of the modern equipment. Broad use of the most various mathematical knowledge, including the newest sections of theoretical and calculus mathematics is characteristic of mechanics of our days. The numerical computer experiment and a method of computer simulation became some of the most effective working tools for mechanics. However communication between mathematics and mechanics is not one-sided. The mechanics also stimulates development of many sections of mathematics, formulating often such tasks for which solution suitable mathematical are not developed yet methods. Coeducation of students on these is explained by this organic interaction of mathematics and mechanics to specialties at mekhaniko-mathematical faculty.
Departments of mathematics and mechanics
The faculty has two departments: mathematicians and mechanics. Department of mathematics integrates departments of the mathematical analysis, the higher algebra, the higher geometry and topology, probability theory, common problems of management, the number theory, differential equations, the function theory and the functional analysis, a logic theory and an algorithm theory, mathematical statistics and accidental processes, discrete mathematics, calculus mathematics, the general topology and geometry, the mathematical theory of intelligent systems, differential geometry of applications, the theory of the dynamic systems, mathematical and computer methods of the analysis, theoretical information science.
Department of mechanics integrates departments of theoretical mechanics and mechatronics, aeromechanics and gas dynamics, the theory of elasticity, hydromechanics, applied mechanics and management, gas and wave dynamics, the theory of plasticity, mechanics of composites, computing mechanics, engineering mechanics and applied mathematics.
Curricula of faculty cover all modern directions of mathematics and mechanics. The important place in the curriculum of students mechanics is taken by a practical work in laboratories of Institute of mechanics of MSU. Thus, fundamental physical and mathematical preparation on both departments is almost identical, and the additional disciplines which are in the curriculum of department of mechanics traditionally belong to the fields of mathematical modeling and applied mathematics.
Students of faculty study also history and methodology of mathematics and mechanics, a cycle of humanitarian disciplines, English.
Arriving on mekhaniko-mathematical faculty can specialize in the fields of fundamental mathematics, mechanics, applied mathematics and economy. Training term — 6 years. On each department on 1 and 2 rates training happens according to the general program for all students. From the 3rd rate students are separated on departments. Each student selects the teacher who directs his early scientific research. Graduates gain the diploma about the termination of the Moscow university.
Students and graduate students publish results of the researches in the leading scientific magazines, actively participate in the different All-Russian and international Olympic Games and tenders on mathematics, information science, robotics and other disciplines. More than 10 years of a command of mekhaniko-mathematical faculty participate in the International student's Olympic Games on mathematics and in the programming World Cup among college teams. Mekhmat commands repeatedly reached the final and got gold medals.
At faculty there is a department of application studies including educational scientific center and laboratories of the systems of artificial intelligence, dynamics of deformable environments, navigation and management of the space systems, software of the simulation dynamic systems, the applied mathematical analysis. At departments laboratories of computing methods, mathematical statistics, probability theory, computing means of probabilistic and statistical investigations, computer simulation, the big accidental systems, computer methods in natural and the humanities, operator models and the spectral theory and also an office of history and methodology of mathematics and mechanics and an office of a technique of teaching elementary mathematics work. Both graduate students, and students of faculty are involved in scientific work on subject of these laboratories.
Graduates
Graduates of faculty work in all large research centers, educational and other institutions which are not necessarily directly connected with mathematics and mechanics. They with success solve both theoretical, and applied tasks, conduct pedagogical work. The diploma of mekhaniko-mathematical faculty is recognized around the world. About a third of graduates annually come to a postgraduate study and continue to be engaged in scientific work which purpose is preparation of the thesis.
The Mekhaniko-matematichesky faculty is nice and strong the traditions. On a mekhmata teach not so much "recipes" of the solution of specific objectives, how many ability to think independently and also to take knowledge from different sources. It allows graduates of faculty to be effective in various fields of activity — from computer or financial before production management and policy.
