The Dassault Systemes (DS) company, the system provider CAD/PLM announced in 2012 the decision to purchase for 360 mln. dollars cash the Gemcom Software International private firm which is releasing software for mining industry. 360 employees of Gemcom will be a part of new division of GEOVIA within DS, but at the same time will remain on the places (the headquarters of Geocom is in Canada) and will continue product development for mining industry.
In April, 2012 Dassault Systèmes, the Europe's second in value software company on total revenue, purchased the Canadian GemCom, the producer of software for modeling, for $360 million.
The head of Dassault Systèmes Bernard Charlès said that this transaction will allow to be fixed in the market of software for the mining companies and the companies connected with processing of natural resources which are traditionally very conservative in questions of acquisition of software.
Software for 3D modeling from Dassault Systèmes is used by 150 thousand companies, beginning from producer of shampoos Procter & Gamble to Boeing company. However, in the mining industry Dassault up to this point had no customer.
To software of GemCom it is intended for project management of development of minerals. Most likely, it not the last acquisition of Dassault Systèmes which saved up about 1.5 billion euros cash
The GemCom private company is engaged in creation of the software which helps it the companies as BHP Billiton, Codelco and De Beers to be engaged in development of mines and to manage projects of excavation. According to Charles, the staff of this company makes 360 people, and the annual income for 2011 was $90 million. It is expected that GemCom will grow dvuznachno in the next several years. In the world at the moment there are about 5.5 thousand operating mines and about 15 thousand projects of mountain developments.
The team of managers of GemCom, including the head of the company Rick Moignard, will continue work in the company and after closing of the transaction. The largest shareholders of GemCom are private shareholders of JMI Equity, Carlyle Group and Pala Investments.
At Dassault Systèmes the volume of cash in the amount of 1.56 billion euros so, according to Charles, the transaction in the amount of $360 million is not burdensome for the company is at the moment accumulated, and Dassault Systèmes considers the possibility of similar absorption in the near future. Besides, specifically for the sector of natural resources the company will bring a new brand, Geovia to the market.
In the first quarter 2012 of sale of Dassault grew by 10% to 462.4 million euros generally due to high demand on software of the company from Asian producers. DS is going not just to integrate the solutions Gemcom with the systems, and to create the new GEOVIA brand based on technologies of the purchased firm. Specific information on a new product is not given, said only that it will be the platform for modeling of our planet, increase in predictability, efficiency, security and stability of mining industry.
Gartner notes that demand for minerals from China, India and other countries with the developing production caused this boom in mining industry. With respect thereto the mining enterprises try to increase labor productivity and volume of production. For this purpose they should plan more carefully works and to manage resources, such as mines and equipment. Many of them apply the products Gemcom to 3D - modeling of stocks and also planning tools of production and management of mines.
According to analysts, having received the customer base of Gemcom and its products, DS will find firm positions in mining industry, and over time will be able to use Gemcom technologies during creation of products for the power, agricultural and forest industries.
Gartner notes also gain of consolidation in the market of software for mining industry, for example, recently the ABB company purchased Mincom company, the competitor of Gemcom.
