2021: Mercedes-Benz bought YASA
At the end of July 2021, Daimler acquired YASA, the creator of next-generation electric drive technology. According to the terms of the acquisition, YASA will act as a subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz, which is fully owned by this company, and will develop ultra-high-performance electric motors. At the same time, YASA will retain its own brand, team, production facilities and will continue to supply its former customers with supercars.
The patented YASA axial flow motor is a new generation that should replace traditional radial motors. According to YASA developers, these motors provide the highest efficiency and highest specific power in their class with the minimum possible size and weight.
After the acquisition of YASA, 250 employees of the company will continue their work in the main office and at the YASA production facility in Oxford, UK. YASA will supply electric motors for the Mercedes-Benz AMG.EA platform, designed only for electric vehicles, and will also act as an innovation partner introducing new electric drive technologies.
YASA CEO Chris Harris noted that the company has been partnering with Mercedes-Benz since 2019 and "shares their desire for engineering excellence, innovation and changes necessary to establish an era of electricity." Harris also said that the new deal will allow YASA technology to reach the global level, as Mercedes-Benz will provide the appropriate scale and coverage of production: "Together, we have the opportunity to make YASA a symbol of the best electric motors, accelerate the introduction of electric vehicles and increase the overall driving experience bar."[1]
