Nikola the Power unit for the long-range electric truck

Product
The name of the base system (platform): Bosch e-axle the Power unit for electric vehicles
Developers: Nikola Motor Company, Bosch
Branches: Mechanical engineering and instrument making,  Transport

By 2021 Nikola Motor Company will bring the hydrogen and electric heavy One and Two trucks to the market. Their power units will develop more than 1,000 hp of power and 2,000 Nanometers of a torsional moment. It is approximately twice more, than now at any truck tractor on the road. At the same time, as it was earlier announced by Nikola company, trucks will have zero emissions of harmful substances in the atmosphere.

Heart of a line of the Nikola trucks is the new power unit for commercial vehicles which appeared thanks to cooperation between Nikola and Bosch. The companies designed the power unit almost from scratch. The concept of an axial electric actuator of Bosch eAxle allowed to quicken the pace according to the aggressive plan of an output of the Nikola truck for the market.

The system of the axial eAxle electric drive developed by Bosch is the flexible modular platform integrating the electric motor, power electronics and transmission in the single compact unit. It can be applied with success on cars of any type, beginning from compact machines and finishing with cargo transport. Nikola and Bosch for the first time will begin to use by heavy trucks the two-engined eAxle drive for commercial vehicles.

Construction of eAxle will use already known system of the axial drive and electric SMG motor-generators from Bosch. Technology vision of Nikola and development of Bosch will allow to implement the unprecedented purposes in the field of creation of electric vehicles.

The electrical unit of the eAxle drive will be powered from specially developed fuel cells – also jointly the designed Nikola and Bosch. They will provide to the electric truck an outstanding stock of the course. The management system is joint development on the basis of technical and software solutions of Bosch too. The power unit from Nikola and Bosch will have zero emissions of harmful substances. It should provide the ownership cost, best in a segment of trucks, in comparison with traditional engines.

Bosch and Nikola also jointly develop an end-to-end system of the uniform power unit for a model gamma of Nikola. A system will include the general concept of security and architecture of the power supply network of cars. Using modern technologies of modeling throughout all development process – from configuration before final testing and check, – Nikola One and Two will be released from one of the most modern and optimized constructions in the field of mechanical engineering.
