How much programmers writing in C++, Java and Python earn in Russia
Salaries of software developers in Russia reach 600 thousand rubles a month. This is stated in a study by the recruiting company Antal Talent, the results of which were released on September 25, 2024.
The data presented were obtained from a survey of 3325 respondents conducted from May 17 to June 30, 2024. Participants in the study were specialists and managers of middle and top levels working in Moscow, St. Petersburg and other cities of Russia.
It is said that the most popular way for Russians to find work is through specialized Internet resources. According to the survey, their popularity has grown from 34% in 2023 to 42% in 2024. Among applicants for the Specialist level, more than half (52%) found a new job through such sites. Among top managers, the most popular resource for job search was "professional contacts" (recommendations of colleagues, business partners). Most often, applicants left the company due to the fact that they received a more interesting offer from another company, as well as due to the "lack of prospects and growth inside," "not satisfying the level of salary," "uninteresting tasks" and "lack of balance of work and personal life."

The Ministry of Digital Development of the Russian Federation named the average salary in the IT industry
In July 2024, the Ministry of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media of Russia published data on the average salary in the IT industry. According to the agency, based on Rosstat statistics, the level of remuneration in the field of information technology is twice the average for the country's economy as a whole.
In July 2024, the Ministry of Digital Development noted a significant increase in wages in the industry since the beginning of 2024. In particular, in April 2024, the average salary of IT specialists reached 188 thousand rubles, which is 21% higher than in January 2024.
An analysis of the labor market conducted by HeadHunter showed that in the first half of 2024, the salaries of IT specialists indicated in vacancies on the portal increased by 16% compared to the same period last year and averaged 86 thousand rubles. At the same time, DevOps engineers (24%) and data analysis specialists (20%) recorded the largest growth.
According to Kommersant, the average salary in the IT industry for the first half of 2024 decreased by 8% compared to the same period in 2023 and amounted to 151 thousand rubles. Experts note that this may be due to the optimization of costs of large IT companies and the hiring of entry-level employees.
The geographical distribution of salaries in the IT sector remains uneven. The highest rates were recorded in Moscow, where the average salary of IT specialists reaches 200 thousand rubles. In second place is St. Petersburg with an indicator of 165 thousand rubles, while in the regions the average salary is 135 thousand rubles.
Alexey Smirnov, chairman of the board of directors of BASEALT, suggests that the decrease in the average salary may be associated with a reduction in the share of highly paid employees in large IT companies such as Sberbank, Yandex and Rostec. In his opinion, this may be the result of cost optimization after a period of intense competition for qualified personnel.[2]
Average salaries of IT specialists in Russia for two years increased by 15%. The largest growth among 1C developers
On June 12, 2024, it became known that the average salaries of IT specialists in Russia over the past two years increased by 15%, reaching the level of 244 thousand rubles per month after deducting 13% of personal income tax. The largest growth was recorded among 1C developers, whose median salaries increased by 46% compared to 2022.
According to Tochka Bank, the growth of salaries in the IT segment is due to several factors. Firstly, the demand for qualified specialists continues to grow along with the development of the market, which makes such employees more valuable. Second, companies compete for better employees by offering them higher salaries. Third, inflation and rising prices also affect reward levels.
As the representative of the bank noted, another trend over the past two years has been a decrease in the number of hiring of Russian specialists by foreign companies. At the same time, many successful domestic companies developing import substitution are actively growing and investing in their products, offering high salaries to attract the best specialists in the market.
According to analysts on the hh.ru platform, Product owners have the highest salaries in the IT segment - 305 thousand rubles a month, mobile developers - 305 thousand rubles, and Frontend developers - 239 thousand rubles. These values are indicated taking into account the deduction of 13% of personal income tax.
Research on the hh.ru platform showed that about 1.3 million IT resumes were published between January and May 2024. Most of the resumes (20.7%) belonged to specialists with more than 15 years of experience. The next group was made up of specialists with 3-6 years of experience (19%) and 9-12 years of experience (11%).
According to hh.ru analysts, there is a significant demand in the labor market for IT specialists with 3 years of experience (47.5% of the total volume of announcements). In second place are specialists with more than six years of experience (35.7%), and in third place - without experience at all (12%).[3]

The Ministry of Labor of the Russian Federation named the average salary in IT - over 130 thousand rubles
In early April 2024, the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of the Russian Federation published the results of a study on average salaries in the country. In particular, the Ministry of Labor named the average salary in the IT sphere at the end of 2023 - over 130 thousand rubles.
As noted in the Ministry of Labor, the incomes of Russians differ significantly by industry and region. For example, in the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug in 2023, the average salary was 158 thousand rubles, in Moscow - 136 thousand rubles, in the Sverdlovsk region - 64.5 thousand rubles, and in Ingushetia - 35.9 thousand rubles.
According to Rosstat, cited by the Ministry of Labor, the average monthly accrued salary in Russia in 2023 amounted to 73,709 rubles, which is 14.1% higher than the previous year. In December 2023, the average salary reached 103,815 rubles, an increase of 16.6% compared to the same period in 2022.
The Ministry of Labor said that the average salary is calculated taking into account the salaries of all employees and is the average amount of all salaries in the economy, including extremely high offers in certain industries and regions. The general situation in the labor market also affects the growth of wages. Thus, the lack of labor in some industries and regions leads to higher wages. And the level of remuneration of a particular specialist is influenced by his specialization, region of residence, experience and working conditions. According to estimates of the monitoring of vacancies of the All-Russian Research Institute of Labor, the median salary offered by employers on work portals, on average, doubled in five years by 2023.
The average salary in the field of mining in Russia in 2023 amounted to more than 130 thousand rubles. In trade, it was equal to 63 thousand rubles, in the hospitality industry (hotel business and catering) - 43 thousand rubles.[4]

Growth of the average salary of an IT specialist by 14.5% to 176 thousand rubles - Russoft
At the end of 2023, the average monthly salary of specialized technical employees of Russian software companies reached approximately 176 thousand rubles. For comparison, a year earlier this figure was estimated at 154 thousand rubles. Thus, the growth was at the level of 14.5%. However, in dollar terms, a reduction of 8.2% was recorded due to the devaluation of the ruble against the American currency. Such data are contained in the review of the Russoft Association, published on July 19, 2024.
It is noted that against the background of the formed geopolitical situation in Russia, the process of active import substitution of IT products continues. Therefore, the demand for specialists in the relevant field remains high. In some areas with a narrow profile, wage offer growth could be as high as 20-25% year-on-year.
The study says that in 2021, the average monthly salary in the software industry in Russia was approximately 139 thousand rubles. In 2022, after the start of a special operation, a number of specialized companies had problems with income, which is why they either did not raise the salaries of programmers, or even cut it. Therefore, the average salary throughout the industry increased slightly both relative to inflation and relative to the average salary in the country: the increase in relation to 2021 was at the level of 10.9%. For comparison, inflation was 11.94%, and the increase in nominal wages throughout the country's economy was 12.6%. Thus, as noted, for the first time in the software industry, salary growth was slightly less than the national average. In 2023, the situation began to stabilize. The growth of the average salary in the software industry corresponds to the indicator for the entire Russian economy as a whole (plus 14.6% on an annualized basis).
In the period from 2014 to 2023, the average monthly salary of Russian programmers rose by 180.5%. In particular, in 2014, it amounted to approximately 70 thousand rubles. The maximum jump during the period under review was recorded in 2021, when the increase was 17.4% year-on-year. At the same time, in dollar terms, the indicator has risen by 5.6% over the decade.
"Almost all the years of the annual Russoft study, the salary in the field of software development grew much faster than the same indicator for the entire Russian economy. However, in recent years [by the end of 2023], the software industry has no longer been distinguished by its particularly high growth rates of wages, "the review says.
For 10 years, starting in 2013, in the regions, the average salary of programmers grew faster than in Moscow and St. Petersburg. This is facilitated by the model of hiring specialists with a remote mode of work. At the end of 2023, no serious difference in the growth of the average salary between the two capitals and other constituent entities of Russia was recorded, although the regions have a very small advantage. At the same time, the salaries of programmers in Moscow and St. Petersburg are much higher than in other large cities of the country.
The study also showed that the growth rate of programmers' salaries is higher for companies with a turnover of less than 375 million rubles than for organizations whose revenue exceeds this amount. Product companies have an advantage in terms of average salary growth in relation to service companies, as well as exporters - in relation to those companies that operate only in the Russian market, even despite a sharp reduction in export revenues.[5]
The Ministry of Labor of the Russian Federation named the average salary in IT
In early April 2024, the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of the Russian Federation published the results of a study on average salaries in the country. In particular, the Ministry of Labor named the average salary in the IT sphere at the end of 2023 - over 130 thousand rubles. Read more here.
Increase in the average salary of programmers by 20% to 64,439 rubles
In 2023, the average salary of IT specialists in Russia amounted to 64,439 rubles, while in 2022 it was 53,735 rubles. Thus, year-on-year growth was at 20%. The corresponding figures are given in the study of the Avito Rabota site, the results of which were published on December 20, 2023.
Against the background of the current geopolitical situation, many IT industry workers left Russia. Because of this, as of August 2023, there was a shortage of approximately 700 thousand specialists in this area. In December 2023, IT employees in the Russian labor market were 2.1 times more in demand than in January of this year.
Avito Rabota experts, according to CNews, identify several other factors that contribute to the growth of demand for IT specialists. This is the active development of domestic software against the background of import substitution and universal digitalization. Many professional areas are actively modernizing their work processes, which also contributes to an increase in demand for IT workers.
Most of all, the need for IT specialists increased in Chelyabinsk - 2.3 times at the end of 2023. Kazan is in second place (2.1 times compared to 2022), and Nizhny Novgorod closes the top three (1.9 times). The most significant increase in the average offered wages was recorded in Kazan (+ 37% year-on-year), Krasnoyarsk (+ 32%) and Yekaterinburg (+ 23%).
The demand for technical support specialists for the year rose 2.4 times, and their average salary increased by 5% - from 37.5 thousand rubles to 39.4 thousand rubles. In the segment of IT analysts in 2023, a twofold increase in vacancies was recorded, and the salaries of such employees showed an increase of 21% - from 45,691 rubles to 55,083 rubles. The demand for programmers increased by 2%, while their average salary increased by 4% - from 76,098 rubles to 79,383 rubles.[6]
The Ministry of Digital Development of the Russian Federation records a decrease in the growth rate of salaries in the IT sphere
In mid-December 2023, the Ministry of Digital Development of the Russian Federation announced that the growth rate of salaries of specialists in the IT sector had slowed down in the country. At the same time, about a third of employees of the Russian IT industry faced a decrease in income.
The head of the Ministry of Digital Development Maksut Shadayev spoke about the observed trends. According to him, average salaries in accredited IT companies in 2022 increased by more than 15% on an annualized basis against the background of the outflow of specialists from Russia to other countries. In 2023, the situation began to stabilize, which is a "good sign" both for the state and for business.
2022 is a panic, people are leaving. How do companies operate? They slightly increase salaries to reassure people a little. We see not a drop in salaries, but a slowdown in salary growth. We believe that this temporary slowdown in general indicates that the market is entering the stage of overheating into cooling, says Shadayev. |
The decline in salary growth may also be due to the fact that many young IT employees have entered the market, whose rates are lower than those of qualified specialists. And this is reflected in the average level of salaries in the IT market as a whole. Meanwhile, Russia is actively replenishing the shortage of employees in the IT industry: the number of applicants entering the relevant specialties in universities from 2019 to 2023 increased almost 2.5 times.
A survey conducted by the Russian Association of Electronic Communications (RAEC) among IT specialists in September-October 2023 showed that 34.9% of respondents faced a decrease in income. Among other problems, Russian IT specialists name the impossibility of remote work (14.3%), a lack of competencies (23.8%) and the direct impact of Western sanctions and technological restrictions (about 33%).[7][8]]
MIPT topped the rating of universities in terms of salaries of IT specialists
The job search and recruitment service Superjob in June 2023 published a rating of Russian technical universities graduating from the highest paid students in the IT sector. The first place in the list was taken Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT) with an average salary of 270 thousand rubles per month. More. here

Cutting IT developer salaries
In January 2023, the average salary of IT developers in Russia significantly decreased. So, for novice programmers (the so-called junks), it fell by 13%, to 100 thousand rubles. This is evidenced by data from analysts at HeadHunter, released on February 1, 2023.
According to the study, the salary of an IT specialist of the average level (middle) offered by employers in January 2023 decreased by 11% compared to a year ago - to 160,000 rubles. At the same time, the salary that potential employers call for a highly qualified developer, on the contrary, increased by 4% to 250,000 rubles a month.
The proposed salary at HeadHunter means the indicator that the employer reflects in vacancies, the so-called "salary before...." HeadHunter takes data on actual wages from its own service, a data bank that employers themselves fill, a company representative told Vedomosti.
According to him, the ratio of resumes per IT vacancy in January 2023 reached almost 4, and at the beginning of 2022 it was 1.8. This was expressed in a decrease in the median of the proposed salary. HeadHunter believes that employers are responding to "some dumping by candidates in terms of skill quality and expected salaries."
It follows from these analysts that the reduction in the proposed salaries did not affect the level of actual income of IT sector specialists. The actual salary of novice IT specialists in 2023 increased by 9% (to 97,000 rubles), secondary specialists - by 11% (158,000 rubles), highly qualified personnel - by 5% (211,000 rubles).
IT companies also drew attention to the reduction in developers' salaries. They explain this by the departure from the Russian market of foreign companies and the release of a large number of personnel, said Renat Lashin, executive director of ARPP Domestic Software[9]
2022
Salaries of software developers in Russia increased by 11%
The average salary of software developers in Russia in 2022 increased by 11% compared to 2021. Such data at the end of July 2023 were brought to the Russoft association based on a survey of 240 software companies.
These companies, as noted in the study, began to actively recruit employees in 2022, attracting them with a higher salary than competitors in the labor market. Their growth could be more than 20% (such an increase in the average salary has 15.3% of the surveyed companies). Mostly these are the companies that are most involved in the import substitution process.
In 2012-2022 The average salary of programmers grew faster in the regions, and this trend continued in 2022. This is largely facilitated by the widely used method of hiring specialists without registering them at the company's central office (remote operation is assumed). However, it is unlikely that the difference in the growth rate of wages in capitals and regions is as significant as the survey data show. The smaller the group of companies under study, the higher the error. Nevertheless, salary growth outside the two capitals in any case is still higher than in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Under the conditions established in 2022, the product model provided on average a higher increase in the average salary than the service one, the researchers note.
Almost all the years of the Russoft study, the salary growth of software developers exceeded the official inflation rate and salary growth throughout the country's economy. At the end of 2022, such an excess was not observed: inflation amounted to 11.94%, and the increase in nominal wages throughout the country's economy - 12.6%. It can be assumed that in 2023 the salary of software developers will again grow at a faster pace than the salary of other specialists, since since the beginning of the year a serious shortage of personnel has been felt in the software industry.
In dollar terms, due to the strengthening of the ruble in 2022, salary growth turned out to be more significant - by 19.5%, which made it possible to exceed the level of 2013 (in 2014-2015 there was a significant reduction in salary in dollars). With regard to software developers, the Russian labor market is just part of the world. Therefore, programmers often focus on measuring their income in dollars, although their mass relocation abroad in 2022 was much more influenced by other factors than the salary difference in Russia and Western countries.
Today we observe that the junior specialist market is oversaturated quantitatively, but not qualitatively. There are still not enough young IT specialists with a good theoretical background and high-quality pet projects. Modern applicants are becoming more demanding on working conditions, therefore, in order to attract personnel, in addition to wages, it is necessary to think more about strengthening the social package: this is not only a regular VHI, but the organization of events and programs aimed at families of IT specialists. It is these activities that cause positive feedback and become a competitive advantage in finding an employee, "said Ekaterina Petrova, head of HR at the STC A RGUS. |
According to a study by Russoft, in 2022 there were many those who experienced problems of maintaining the previous level of staff remuneration due to sales losses in the markets of "unfriendly countries." 28.7% of companies did not revise salaries in 2022, and almost 2% (1.9%) reduced it.
Which IT specialties in Russia are the highest paid
In January 2023, analysts at the HeadHunter recruiting service published a study in which they named the highest paid specialties in the Russian IT sector. Backend developers and programmers who write code in Python earn the most - in 2022, the average median salary of such specialists in Russia exceeded 170 thousand rubles. Moreover, for three years, their salary increased by an average of 60,000 rubles.
In the field of data and analytics, Data Scientist earned more than 200,000 in 2022 (salary growth for three years amounted to 81,000 rubles). Frontend developers are the leaders in demand from employers looking for IT specialists in the field of software development, testers are in second place, Python developers are in third, and Backend developers are in fourth.
In the field of data analytics, data analysts turned out to be the most in demand by the end of 2022, Data Scientist and marketing analyst share the second place, and web analyst is the third.
According to HeadHunter analysts, who are given in a study published in January 2023, over the past three years, the median proposed salaries in IT vacancies have grown by 19,000 rubles in Russia and reach 72,000 rubles. In Moscow, average salaries in vacancies increased by 29,000 to 109,000 rubles, in St. Petersburg an increase in three years by 21,000 to 82,000 rubles, in Kazan an increase in three years amounted to 22,000 rubles. At the same time, in 2022, the dynamics of wages was not as active as in 2021.
Programmers of all stripes are needed, but most of all, of course, there is a need for developers. In other segments of the economy, positions related to production, import substitution, innovation and the introduction of new technologies will definitely be in trend, "said career consultant Ilgiz Valinurov. |
The maximum salaries of programmers in St. Petersburg increased over the year to half a million rubles a month
On August 24, 2022, SuperJob announced that analysts of an online job search service in a review of the labor market situation in the IT industry in St. Petersburg analyzed how the number of vacancies and resumes in the IT sector in St. Petersburg changed in six months, and what significant changes in certain areas in salaries in IT occurred in the city, and also highlighted several trends in the labor market of St. Petersburg.
According to SuperJob, compared to July 2021, vacancies in the IT, Internet, communications and telecommunications segments decreased by 25%, and by February 2022 - by 23%.
There was a decrease in the number of resumes in relation to July 2021: -5%. The change in the same indicator in relation to February 2022 as a percentage is -10%.
SuperJob observes the following trends in the IT labor market in St. Petersburg:
- The number of IT vacancies for entry-level applicants has decreased most significantly. Most of the vacancies are for specialists with 2-3 years of experience. The growth in demand in relation to February 2022 and July 2021 is recorded in the segment of information security and information protection.
- Reduction in the number of vacancies from abroad. The economic factor has a decisive influence: due to the dynamics of the dollar and euro against the ruble, the cost of services of Russian developers increased by 40% or more. It became unprofitable for the West to hire Russian programmers.
- The readiness of programmers for relocation abroad and interest in vacancies of foreign companies also decreased significantly. Financial considerations also play the greatest role: salaries in dollars and euros have become much less attractive against the background of the strengthening of the ruble.
- Programmers, who moved abroad (mainly to the CIS republics) in the first days after the start of the SVO, began to return to Russia. In addition to the monetary issue, the underdevelopment of the infrastructure of the former union republics also influenced.
Such processes allow Russian employers to hire high-class developers for adequate money, without resorting to hunting and without outbidding them from competitors. This trend, of course, plays into the hands of large Russian IT players and the public sector.
The annual growth of average market salary offers of employers in the field of information technology amounted to 19.1%.
Most of all in St. Petersburg, on average, the Python programmer is ready to pay: 210,000 (market wages in St. Petersburg, Net (on hand, after taxes), fix, rubles per month), which is 50,000 rubles. more than in 2021. The maximum salary of such developers reaches 420,000 rubles, this is 80,000 rubles. more than a year ago.
DevOps engineers are ready to pay the maximum salary: 500,000 rubles. per month (+ 140,000 rubles per year), and on average, such specialists are ready to pay 210,000 rubles each. (+ 30,000 rubles per month).
Android developers are offered a maximum of 420,000 rubles. (+ 70,000 rubles) per month, and on average - 210,000 rubles. (+ 20,000 rubles).
Information security specialists are offered an average of 150,000 rubles. (+ 20,000 rubles year-on-year), and a maximum of 250,000 rubles. (+ 40,000 rubles).
Salaries of IT specialists in Russia decreased by 11%
The upper bar for salaries offered by IT specialized employers in August 2022 decreased by 11% compared to the same month in 2021 and averaged 160 thousand. rubles He writes about this on September 15, 2022 RBC with reference to the data Habr Career service, which conducts regular polls among workers in this area.
At the same time, the lower salary bar increased (by 24%, 150 thousand rubles), as well as the average salary of specialists (130 thousand rubles, + 8%). Experts explain this situation by the oversupply of "inexpensive" specialists of the entry and middle level in the market.
Other services also report a decrease in the salaries of IT specialists. According to HeadHunter, the median salary of IT specialists in August amounted to 60.5 thousand rubles, which is 3.2% lower than in March. To Moscow IT specialists In the salaries of IT specialists fell to 85.6 thousand rubles (-2.1%), in - St. Petersburg up to 70 thousand rubles (-1%).
The fall in the upper salary bar is due to the lower demand for senior IT specialists, explained Artem Zyza, product manager of Khabr Career. Natalya Danina, chief expert on the labor market, head of client efficiency at HeadHunter, believes that by mid-September 2022, prices simply adjusted after a sharp jump in March 2022, when employers raised salaries, fearing a shortage of specialists.
Natalya Golovanova, head of the SuperJob research center, believes that the salary of a number of IT specialists decreased compared to the March level due to a reduction in remuneration for entry-level specialists. Programmers with three years of development experience are most in demand on the labor market.
Earlier, the Зарпалата.ру service provided research data, from which it follows that every fifth vacancy for IT specialists in Russia on the service involves a salary of at least 150 thousand rubles. In August 2022, Senior DevOps Engineer offered the highest salary up to 600 thousand rubles.[10]

The salary of programmers in Russia is 2.33 times higher than the national average
The average salary of programmers in Russia was more than twice the national average. This is evidenced by the data of Russoft, published in August 2021.
The monthly salary of specialized technical employees in software companies in Russia at rubles the end of 2020 amounted to 119 thousand, which is 11.1% more than a year earlier. According to the data, the Rosstat average nominal salary in Russia for all industries in 2020 increased by 6% compared to 2019 and reached 51.1 thousand rubles. As a result, the difference in income between a development specialist ON and an average employee in Russia increased again: in 2020, programmers in the Russian Federation earned 133% more.
At the same time, a slight decrease in the average salary of software developers was registered in dollars - by 0.4% to $1,650. Such a decrease is within the margin of error, and it can be considered that the average salary of programmers in US dollars remained at the same level, experts from Russoft note.
According to them, the competitiveness of Russian custom software developers in the world market has nevertheless increased, albeit slightly. Firstly, because service companies specializing in the development of custom software, salary growth was slightly lower than that of software developers (in ruble terms by 10.6% and 12.8%, respectively). Secondly, in other countries, unlike Russia, the level of salaries of programmers in dollar terms over the past year has increased. For example, the average U.S. salary for a web developer rose 4.9% in 2020, according to a study by job search site Dice.
If we consider the last seven years, then the average salary of a programmer of Russian software companies in rubles increased by 88% and decreased by 16% in dollars. However, it cannot be said that traveling abroad has become unambiguously more profitable for software developers, according to a report released in August 2021.
The fact is that dollar inflation also exists. At the same time, price growth in 2021 in developed countries accelerated. If at the end of 2020 they in the United States increased by 1.36%, then in May 2021 - by 5% in annual terms.
The association says that the problem of personnel shortages in Russia has begun to be felt even more acute, so the growth rate of the average salary in the software industry at the end of 2021 in rubles will be no lower than in 2020. Given the stabilization of the national currency, a slight increase in the average salary of programmers in the US currency can also be expected.
The IT industry became the only one in the segment of small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs), where salaries grew. Such conclusions were reached by specialists from HeadHunter and the Potok investment platform.
On an annualized basis, the salaries of IT specialists working in small and medium-sized companies grew at the end of each month of 2020. The relative increase in income for the month was 10% or more. According to Potok, employers offered an average salary of 44.7 thousand rubles in vacancies. (or 38.9 thousand rubles, including personal income tax) - 4% more than a year earlier.
HeadHunter also saw a pay rise. The head of the research service of the online platform, Maria Ignatova, noted that in the conditions of a sharp freeze in the business, employees could be kept only by increasing their income. And in this regard, SMEs had more room for maneuver than large companies. In March, there was a decline in the job market, but in June the business overcame it. In addition, due to the pandemic, labor migration abroad has decreased, and this has also had a positive effect on the domestic market.[11]

Hays study: Highest IT payrolls in 2017 were in banking
- The lowest paid specialists in IT are testers, analysts and system administrators, the highest paid - IT directors
- Specialized companies strengthen their R&D capabilities, create competence centers in the regions and invest in technological business development
- Salaries of big data specialists will show steady growth in the near future
These are the conclusions of the annual study of the labor market and wages in Russia Hays Salary Guide 2017, conducted by Hays. It was attended by 4,776 professionals and 514 employers from large companies. Most of them are international, the bulk of the surveyed professionals work in Moscow, but there are also respondents from the regions.
Directions of industry development
Every year investments in the IT industry are increasing. Some companies focus on process automation (projects for the implementation or development of ERP systems, robotization, etc.), others are actively engaged in projects aimed at the convenience of communication with the consumer/client (web technologies, e-commerce). Thanks to this trend, there is now a high demand for experienced highly specialized IT project managers.
If we talk about the development market, then it is worth noting the active development of fintech, which uses the latest developments in the field of mobile payments, online services, instant translations in building its business model. Today, specialists in this area are in demand and earn above the market.
The labor market in the IT industry is currently candidate. Companies that do not have the opportunity to offer attractive wages to candidates re-associate employees from the regions. At the same time, many still follow the path of luring experienced candidates and retraining them for their product.
As for the temporary positions in the direction of IT and telecommunications, today IT contracting in Russia is still not popular. Many professionals do not feel confident and socially secure when working under a contract and prefer constant rates in the state, albeit with less earnings. At the same time, the development market is more open to this kind of cooperation. Employers willingly engage additional contract manpower to achieve certain business goals or in the absence of an agreed rate in the staffing table.
How much do IT specialists receive
If we talk about the level of wages in general, then there are no significant changes: some companies, due to internal policies, set the level of compensation below the market, others outbid qualified specialists. Some companies have a bonus scheme, and it also applies to IT specialists, but there are no other bonuses, or they are supposed only to a commercial unit.
The salaries of testers, analysts and system administrators have not shown a strong growth trend for many years now and are the lowest on the market - as a rule, even a specialist with experience rarely has a salary of more than 150,000 rubles. The highest paid position in IT is IT Director: a specialist with 4-year experience has an average income of 375,000 to 450,000 rubles on average.
It is important to note that at the same time, the salaries of the most popular specialists (developers, specialists from the field of big data, etc.) hold their positions firmly, and in some cases gradually increase (for example, big data engineers).
The salary of software developers in Russia continues to grow
According to the Russoft association, the average salary of specialized employees of Russian software companies by the end of 2017 exceeded 90 thousand rubles. Thus, over the year, this indicator increased by about 10%, which is more than 2 times the official inflation rate. For comparison, at the end of 2016, software developers earned 82-84 thousand rubles.
In general, as the results of Russoft's research showed, the growth of programmers' income in ruble terms has not stopped for the past 20 years, despite any crises. In particular, in the previous few years, growth was at the level of 5-10%. Since salaries were either frozen or reduced in almost all other industries, software developers steadily rose in the ranking of the highest paid professions in Russia.
Russoft's calculations confirm the data of recruiting companies. So, according to HeadHunter, in 2016 in the IT industry, the average salary was 78 thousand rubles. At the same time, in software companies that make up part of this industry, employee incomes were slightly higher. More could be earned only in the extractive industry (not counting enterprises producing oil and gas) - 104 thousand rubles. In turn, the oil and gas industry, allocated by analysts in a separate category, in the HeadHunter rating was in third place with a salary of 76 thousand rubles.
The outstripping growth rates of programmers' income led to the fact that the average earnings in the field of software development by the end of 2017 became about 2.3-2.4 times higher than in all other sectors of the Russian economy, calculated in Russoft. At the same time, in the regions the difference is even more noticeable - up to 2.5-2.8 times, while in Moscow and St. Petersburg - 1.6-1.8 times.
According to the association's calculations, at the end of 2016, 470-480 thousand software developers worked in Russia, including employees of IT services of enterprises in various industries. Of these, they are employed directly in the software industry (excluding foreign development centers) - 132-137 thousand specialists.
Against the background of a steady increase in wages in ruble terms, many programmers remain dissatisfied with the level of their income, since they are used to measuring it in dollars or euros. After the ruble depreciated more than 2 times against the dollar in 2014-2016, the average salary of a software developer in dollar terms decreased by 31-35% over this period. According to Russoft, according to the results of 2017, both the average wage level is expected to grow by about 10%, and the ruble will strengthen against the dollar (also by about 10%). As a result, the income of software development specialists will grow in dollar terms by more than 20%. At such growth rates in 2018 or 2019, the salary of programmers may reach the level of 2013, the company believes.
In general, a decrease in the average salary in dollar terms did not lead to a massive outflow of personnel abroad. However, according to the association's estimates, in 2016 the number of highly qualified specialists who left Russia increased - this is evidenced by the share of companies for which migration of employees abroad is a problem from 14% in 2016 to 18% in 2017. At the same time, the influx of specialists from neighboring countries increased, as a result, the situation on the labor market remains balanced, although it continues to deteriorate, concluded in Russoft.
Programmers do not have enough additional 400 thousand rubles a year to live in Moscow
In August 2017, Codementor, a software consulting service, presented the results of a study that talks about the best cities for software developers to work in. It follows from the report that living in Moscow is too expensive for such specialists.
The rating takes into account the real incomes of programmers, formed taking into account the costs of rent and accommodation (costs of food, travel, etc.), local taxes and social security. At the same time, rent for an apartment or house in this case is a more determining factor than the rest.
Top of the rankings was Seattle, home to the headquarters of Microsoft, Amazon and other tech giants. The average real income of programmers in this city is $45,182 per year. The top five also included American cities: Phoenix, San Jose, Austin and Houston.
Oslo is recognized as the most profitable city not in the USA. In the Norwegian capital, programmers earn more than $28 thousand minus all expenses. True, there are not many vacancies for international companies in this city - only 106 at the time of the study.
The report mentioned Moscow. Here, software developers, receiving an average salary, cannot afford to rent an apartment in the city center. On average, Moscow programmers for normal life annually lack about $6.6 thousand (almost 400 thousand rubles at the exchange rate as of August 14, 2017) in addition to what they earn.
However, Codementor stipulates that the data may not be entirely correct, since the salary information is taken from the Glassdoor website , and the cost of living was estimated using Numbeo. Both services focus on research in the United States. It is worth noting that the Codementor report indicates only 138 vacancies opened in Moscow for software development in international companies.[12]
