Rosneft has expanded the use of drones: from monitoring methane emissions to accounting for walruses

In 2022, Rosneft expands the use of drones (UAVs) to detect sources of methane emissions, follows from the company's sustainability[3]Drones with laser scanners and video cameras to control methane emissions are used, in particular, at oil and gas processing and transportation facilities of key Rosneft production enterprises. They reveal anomalies in methane concentration over linear and areal objects.

In 2021, studies using drones were carried out in 10 societies of the group, and in 2022 such studies are already planned in 17 societies of the group.

In total, in 2021, more than 600 objects were examined for methane leaks using drones at production sites with a total area of ​ ​ 57 square meters. km, as well as about 3.3 thousand km of gas pipelines.

Rosneft has developed a new set of software for exploration and production to replace imported

In an annual report published at the end of April 2021, Rosneft reported on progress in developing its own application software. Some of the results relate to its flagship software product, RN-GRID, a hydraulic fracturing simulation (frac) simulator. The company launched R&D to develop RN-GRID version 3.0 with new functionality that would correspond to new technological challenges in the field of hydraulic fracturing.

RN-GRID was also commercialized for external consumers, licenses for the right to use it are available for purchase. According to Rosneft, in 2020, 115 commercial and more than 40 test licenses for the right to use this software were transferred to 23 oilfield service and oil and gas companies. Also, over 50 academic licenses were transferred to four leading partner universities for the right to use RN-GRID in the educational process.

In 2020, Rosneft also developed the first version of the RN-GEOSIM geological modeling software complex. From 2021, it is planned to implement it. This complex will make it possible to replace imported software by 50% in terms of building geological models, the company expects.

A new version of the RN-KIM hydrodynamic simulator was also created, which the company has been using for more than six years. Field models created at RN-KIM are used to improve the reliability of the field design and to select optimal hydrocarbon recovery technologies.

According to Rosneft, the new version of RN-KIM with compositional modeling allows calculations using GPU graphics accelerators or computer clusters and modeling the most complex oil and gas condensate fields for calculations. A module was developed for it for optimal placement of an irregular well pattern based on artificial intelligence technology. The company says it is "AlphaZero's DeepMind counterpart Google."

Among the new products in the annual report is the RN-GEOSIM 1.0 software package for geological modeling of fields, which Rosneft calls an analogue of "leading foreign packages for geological modeling." Modules on kinematic interpretation of seismic information are being developed.

Back in 2020, the RN-Simtep 1.0 software package was developed to simulate technological processes in the field of oil and gas production, and it is being tested at corporate research and design institutes. Rosneft expects RN-Simtep to provide up to 80% of the company's production needs for process modeling. It is also planned to develop this product in the direction of oil refining and petrochemicals.

In 2020, a domestic flexible tubing simulator (GNKT simulator) "RN-VECTOR" was also created. This is industrial software for mathematical modeling and analysis of technological operations using GNKT. The simulator offers more than 50 algorithms for calculating stress, hydraulics and fatigue wear to simulate the execution of various technological operations with GNKT.

The GNCT simulator is used in the oil and gas industry in the processes of planning, monitoring and analysis of operations using the GNCT technology. At the time of the release of Rosneft's annual report, the simulator is undergoing pilot testing in 24 companies of the group.

And in the same year, Rosneft developed RN-VISOR software for collecting, processing and visualizing data in real time. This software is intended for installation at the control station of the GNKT/frac fleet.

As an example of other developments of 2020 mentioned in the report, we can cite the software module "Decision Support System for Drilling New Sections of Low-Permeability Collectors" in the corporate software complex "RN-KIN." The module was used in the formation of the optimal well drilling rating in RN-Yuganskneftegaz for 2021-2025.

Knowledge-intensive software in Rosneft is being developed mainly by organizations within its technological cluster. According to the company, in its perimeter there are 34 scientific and technological centers with a staff of more than 20 thousand highly qualified employees and scientists. Also, on the basis of the Rosneft technological cluster, there are 44 competence centers for narrowly focused and knowledge-intensive activities.

The program of localization and import substitution of equipment and technologies has been implemented at Rosneft since 2015. The company's annual report says that it has organized interaction with Sberbank and Rostelecom as key partners in the framework of import substitution tasks for IT equipment and software.

In addition to developing domestic software, the company is also working on replacing the services of foreign service companies in the oil and gas sector. Thus, according to Rosneft, due to its own geonavigation service created from scratch on the basis of the Institute of Geology and the Development of Combustible Minerals (IGiRGI), the accumulated savings as a result of the complete refusal of foreign service amounted to more than 1.7 billion rubles.

2020: Rosneft gets rid of imported software for exploration and production

In February 2020, Rosneft spoke about the interim results of import substitution of high-tech software in the company and presented a roadmap for the further development of such products. First of all, Rosneft is focused on replacing foreign software related to the exploration and production of hydrocarbons. By 2025, in this area, it plans to completely replace third-party software with its own developments.

By 2017, Rosneft, as part of import substitution, had developed several packages of application software: RN-HORIZON +, a software tool for geological support of well drilling, RN-KIN, expert analytical software for solving field development management problems, RN-ROSPUMP, software for selecting submersible equipment for wells, and RN-KIM, a hydrodynamic simulator for 3D modeling of development processes of all types of fields.

By 2017, the company also completed the development of RN-GRID software for modeling hydraulic fracturing (fracking), a method of oil production that is gaining momentum in Russia and in the world. RN-GRID operates on models of single fractures in the well. The company told TAdviser that Rosneft at the level of the scientific reserve has developments for more complex hydraulic fracturing models, with multiple cracks, but so far there is no need to bring it to the level of an industrial solution, because according to scientists and company engineers, single fractures are formed on most reservoirs during hydraulic fracturing.

Rosneft uses RN-GRID not only for its needs, but also supplies licenses to other oil and gas and oilfield service companies. In 2019, Rosneft also began industrial use of the RN-SIGMA software complex, designed for geomechanical modeling and risk management during drilling.

The company said that at the level of everything related to the search for oil deposits and production, Rosneft has almost completely closed the need for software with its own developments. Imported software continues to be used only for highly specialized tasks, for example, seismic interpretation, the company says.

Foreign software continues to be used in projects for external customers to whom Rosneft institutes provide engineering support services. The representative of Rosneft added that the company's institutes are 95% loaded with internal tasks and 5% with service work for external customers, which include joint projects and projects based on the results of tenders won. Projects for external customers using their own software help, among other things, to refine and develop it faster, Rosneft explains.

What kind of foreign products Rosneft replaced with its own developments, the company does not specify, but according to data from open sources about its purchases, Rosneft enterprises previously acquired, for example, various geological software from SLB (formerly Schlumberger).

As for future plans, according to the roadmap shown by Rosneft, in 2020 it plans to begin using its own product, RN-GEOSIM, designed for digital geological modeling. And in 2021 - RN-PETROLOG products for petrophysical modeling, and RN-SIMTEP products for modeling technological processes in the field of transportation, preparation and primary processing of well products.

The company has several more products in development: RN-SmartGir for design automation, RN-VECTOR for modeling and analyzing operations with flexible tubing and software for other tasks, which the company plans to announce later.

After the introduction of US and European sanctions against Russian oil and gas companies, including Rosneft, in 2014, other players in this market, for example, Gazprom Neft, also took care of the development of their own software for geological exploration and production. Gazprom Neft's frac software was one of the first products it focused on. The company, like Rosneft, plans to use internal software developments not only for its needs, but also commercialize them.

Key results of digitalization in 2019

In the annual report for 2019, published in May 2020, Rosneft reported on key results in the field of digitalization. For 2019, within the framework of the implementation of digital programs of business and functional units "Exploration and Production," "Oil Refining," "Commerce and Logistics," "Regional Sales," "Gas," "Oil and Gas Chemistry," "Personnel Management" and "Capital Construction," 24 concepts were developed, 18 prototypes and 28 digital solutions were tested. Exploration and Production

  • The Digital Field has been commissioned. The project was implemented on the basis of the Ilishevsky field of PJSC ANK Bashneft. Rosneft says that for the first time in the industry it covers all the main processes of oil production and logistics. The company expects that the project will achieve a significant increase in production indicators and a significant economic effect. Rosneft estimated that the number of remotely controlled facilities will increase by almost 60%, the energy efficiency of production processes will increase by 5% and logistics costs will decrease by 5%.

  • Computer vision technology is used at the Varioganneftegas PJSC facility. Based on artificial intelligence algorithms, it automatically and in real time records the presence of people in dangerous areas, determines the availability of personal protective equipment and is able to immediately inform about emergencies.

  • Detailed 3D models have been created for six production assets (RN-Uvatneftegaz, Slavneft-Krasnoyarsk Neftegaz, RN-Vankor, NK Kondaneft, Verkhnechonskneftegaz and Vostibneftegaz). Three-dimensional models will be used to create a unified information technology environment for monitoring the operation of oil fields using advanced visualization and a three-dimensional twin of the asset.

  • The developed drone monitoring complex passed flight tests, including in difficult climatic conditions. The complex includes an unmanned vehicle of its own design, which can be equipped with a video camera, a thermal imager, a gas analyzer, as well as charging and heating stations for unmanned aerial vehicles and software for managing flight plans. The complex will simplify and secure the inspection of infrastructure facilities and pipelines. The computer vision technologies used in the complex are able to automatically determine the presence of people and equipment in protected areas and inform about oil spills.

  • At the Samotlorneftegaz facilities, the company used machine learning technology to predict the failure of the electric centrifugal pump to manage the supply chain and optimize inventory. The developed technology is based on artificial intelligence and neural networks and can significantly increase the accuracy of forecasting for equipment failures, thus helping to more accurately plan supply processes, Rosneft explains.

  • New promising technologies have been identified and tested. A prototype of the technology for repair teams has been created, which is called "Digital Teams of well servicing and workover." Preliminary tests of advanced technologies for remote monitoring of gas leaks using modern laser gas analyzers were carried out.

Gas

The digitalization program of the Gaz business block includes 17 digital initiatives and consists of two parts: 12 unique initiatives of the Gaz block and five initiatives of the Exploration and Production block, which are planned to be adapted to the tasks of the gas direction. Sibneftegas and Rospan International have been identified as landfills for testing new technologies. In 2019, Rosneft developed and defended the company's first concept of a digital gas field.

  • Sibneftegas has tested the technology of operational integrated optimization of gas production at the Pyrane gas condensate field using machine learning methods. A prototype of the integrated model of the field ("One") was created, preparations are underway for the launch of the pilot implementation project.

  • Sibneftegaz has tested the information technology platform that implements the digital twin of the Sibneftegaz Pyraine field. A prototype with three-dimensional visualization of the field ("Mitra") was created, preparations are underway for the launch of the pilot implementation project.

  • Sibneftegas also entered the testing stage with initiatives to monitor the stability of wells and infrastructure facilities in real time. A thermal imager was installed on a cluster of gas wells for remote detection of gas leaks (Atlant) and an initiative was tested for online monitoring of the technological regime of wells and processing studies on gas wells in real time using machine learning (Borey), maintenance based on predictive analysis of the state of production equipment designed to collect and prepare gas for long-distance transport (Tor).

  • In addition, Sibneftegaz has reached the prototyping stage with a solution for the intelligent analysis of gas assets (Amon), which provides management with access to up-to-date production information and tools for advanced and predictive analytics from mobile devices.

  • Rospan International has launched the testing of the technology of unmanned aerial vehicles for remote control of the state of the stock of abandoned and mothballed wells (Hermes).

Oil processing

  • The Saratov Refinery has implemented prototypes of a system for multifactorial monitoring and control of energy efficiency and a system for calculating the energy balance to optimize energy consumption. To improve the level of industrial safety and labor protection, prototyping of personnel monitoring technologies was carried out, which make it possible to determine and control the location of employees at the refinery in real time.

  • In order to ensure the efficiency and improve the quality of management decision-making, Bashneft-Ufaneftekhim ANC created a prototype of a system for monitoring and analyzing business process indicators.

  • The Syzran Refinery has put into commercial operation a system for optimizing the mixing of dark oil products. In order to control the perimeter of the refinery in terms of determining the location of leaks, strangers, fires and other emergency situations, prototyping of technologies using computer vision and unmanned aerial vehicles was carried out.

  • In order to monitor the state of technical devices, record deviations in their operation and monitor the passage of bypass routes, RNPK tested the use of explosion-proof mobile devices, and prototyped 3D scanning technologies to visually support maintenance and repair processes.

  • At RNPK, as part of the pilot project for the implementation of GE Smart Signal, Fleet Management and GE Meridium systems, the FEED stage has been completed and work is underway to deploy the system in a test environment for pilot operation.

  • The concepts of digital solutions for predictive monitoring and calculation of corrosion, intelligent control of leaks, creation of a template solution for wireless data transfer to refineries, virtual meeting rooms, centralized monitoring and rationalization of alarms, industrial 3D printing, video monitoring of operating modes/integrity of plants and pipelines using thermal imaging control have been developed.

Oil and gas chemistry

  • At the Novokuybyshevskaya Petrochemical Company production site, the TECont of safety and controlling personnel actions using computer vision were tested using classical video analytics and neural networks.

  • At the Ufaorgsintez production site, the software and hardware complex for monitoring the location of personnel, the completeness of personal protective equipment, physical activity and the state of personnel and the environment was tested. This initiative and the above is planned to be developed further.

  • The specialists of Novokuybyshevskaya Petrochemical Company have created a mathematical model of the gas fractionation plant, which allows improving the accuracy of production planning and assessing measures to improve efficiency.

  • The same company has developed and tested software robots for material production balance and supply processes. They made it possible to significantly reduce the time spent on the implementation of the process, according to Rosneft. And in 2020, it is planned to carry out robotization in relation to other routine labor-intensive processes of the enterprise.

Regional Sales Area

  • The possibility of payment through a mobile application within the framework of the Retail Mobility: Development of New Payment Technologies project has appeared at more than 120 BP ABCs. In order to improve the service for the retail sale of petroleum products at Rosneft gas stations, a mobile application has been implemented in the community with partner banks, which allows refueling without leaving the car.

  • A prototype of a solution for issuing fuel cards in self-service mode at a special terminal has been developed, which allows identifying a trustee during the issuance process and recording issued fuel cards.

  • In connection with the need to improve the quality of end-to-end control of the oil product flow chain from the entrance to the tank farm to the pistol of the fuel dispensing column of the gas station, to increase the fault tolerance of the oil product loss control processes, as well as to reduce the risk of frodal operations with oil products at gas stations and oil depots, a prototype of an automated information system for monitoring the safety of material reserves was developed.

  • To improve the efficiency of interaction with suppliers of goods and services for gas stations, a prototype of electronic document management with suppliers/B2B customers using blockchain technology was implemented. It is possible to use a trusted EDI environment for deliveries to gas stations. The tested solution is designed to improve the efficiency of managing the supply chain of related goods at the ABC/gas station.

Human Resources Management

  • In order to increase the degree and speed of operational electronic interaction between employees and the personnel service within the framework of labor legal relations, the validation of the digital scenario "Employee's Personal Account" on the basis of a mobile application is being completed.

  • The testing stage according to the digital scenario "HR-bot" has been completed. The solution allows employees to ask questions and receive answers on HR topics in a specialized computer program at any convenient time from stationary computers and from mobile corporate devices.

  • The process of testing the digital scenario for the development of the Modular and Contextual Self-Learning platform continues. As of May 2020, a solution implemented in the form of a mobile application for Android, iOS operating systems, as well as for the web version, is being tested. The solution allows you to provide consulting content in the format of videos for company employees according to a single standard.

  • To obtain analytical data, which are the basis for rationing the number of personnel of production divisions of enterprises, work was initiated on the digital scenario "Digital tools for rationing the number." According to the created concept, the development of staffing standards at production facilities is carried out using intelligent systems for processing big data in real time.

Commerce and Logistics

Exploration and Production

One of the key projects in 2018 was the launch of a digital field on the basis of the Ilishevsky field in Bashkiria, which uses predictive analytics, advanced imaging, machine learning, mobile and wearable devices. It was the company's first project of its kind.

For field management and effective online monitoring, an Integrated Operations Center was established. The implementation is based on digital twins of physical objects using a 3D visualization platform.

The Digital Deposit is a virtual analogue of real production. Online displays all the main parameters of its operation. Oil production, transportation, personnel movements, movement transport and unmanned aerial vehicles - all real processes of the production facility are reflected on a digital platform.

Industrial Internet of Things is widely used at the field. Special sensors record traffic and exclude the possibility of unauthorized deviations from the route, and drones monitor the integrity of pipelines and exclude the possibility of illegal tie-ins.

Among the devices based on the industrial Internet of Things are personal gas analyzers and digital personal protective equipment for workers, which give an alarm if the employee neglects safety equipment in a dangerous area, as well as heart rate sensors, locations capable of transmitting SOS signals in case of emergency situations.

Testing of the pipeline monitoring system using autonomous drones was allocated to Rosneft in a separate project. Within the framework of the digital cluster created on the basis of Sibintek, there is a separate team engaged in developments in the field of unmanned aerial vehicles. The monitoring system she created automates the process of controlling a swarm of drones, according to a Rosneft report. Machine learning and computer vision technologies are used to process on-site monitoring materials.

The results of digitalization in the exploration and production unit at Rosneft also include the development of a system for predicting complications and failures of downhole pumping equipment (GNO) and a system for supporting decision-making in the process of mechanized production. In addition, on the basis of its own data center, a solid cluster was created and a comprehensive service was formed on the basis of the GeoPAK collaboration platform, which provides remote access for employees to specialized software for processing geological and geophysical data.

Processing

Rosneft owns 13 Russian oil refineries (refineries). To effectively manage each of them, increase productivity and reduce the timing of facility design and accelerated modernization, Rosneft is implementing the Digital Plant program. It provides for the use of modern technologies that allow you to remotely monitor the state of critical equipment in real time, collect and analyze the entire data array, and maintain an accounting and management system at the refinery.

Until 2024, it is planned to introduce more than 80 advanced process control systems at the Rosneft refinery.

To monitor and survey objects at the factories, the use of drones and special robotic systems is provided. With the help of smart bracelets and other navigation systems, as well as mobile devices, it is planned to ensure control over the health and condition of personnel. It is also planned to introduce such solutions as a digital twin system, three-dimensional, virtual and augmented reality, the Rosneft report says.

As of mid-2019, the concept of using drones and thermal imaging control systems for monitoring the state of oil pipelines and protecting facilities has been developed.

Logistics and Transport

2014: IT budget: 50 billion rubles in 2014

At the end of January 2014, Rosneft organized for the first time a meeting of suppliers and contractors in the field of IT, which, according to the company, was visited by representatives from more than 230 Russian and foreign organizations.

The company expects to purchase the necessary IT products and services through purchases: in total, in 2014 it is planned to place about 11 thousand lots. At the same time, the main type of procurement procedures - in 80% of cases - will be an open request for prices.

As for the geography of purchases, the overwhelming majority of them - 82%, should come to the regions, and the remaining - to Moscow. In this regard, Rosneft called on suppliers to expand their activities in the regions: often only 1-2 local companies are present in regional purchases, and large suppliers do not enter the auction.

2013: How IT management works at Rosneft

The general meaning of the reform of the Rosneft IT block after the merger with TNK-BP is explained in the company's documents by compliance with business requirements, the achievement of synergy between the unifying structures and the centralization of IT[9].

Now in the structure of the IT service of the oil company there are three main technological areas. He is headed by Anton Strokovich, who moved to the position of Advisor to the President of the company Igor Sechin in October 2012.

The first area is responsible for traditional basic IT services, which include IT infrastructure, telecommunications and applications. This infrastructure division is headed by Sergey Pegasov, who transferred from Sberbank in July 2013.

The purpose of the second direction of the IT service is to create a single information space for the company. It includes not only the development of ERP, we are talking about the end-to-end receipt of accurate and up-to-date information by the company's management from production and business processes.

For example, Rosneft already has an application for mobile devices, on which managers can see the operational financial and production performance of the company.

The division responsible for the process-oriented IT model in the new company and a single information space is headed by Maxim Kadantsev, who has transferred from Sibur. In his previous job, he was responsible for setting up a multi-service support centre for accounting, treasury and other operations. This center was created by Kadantsev from scratch in five years, he moved to Rosneft from the position of general director of the center.

The third IT area is responsible for automating the production, processing and marketing of oil and petroleum products. This area also includes metrological control (meaning quality assurance of technological measurements and accuracy of methods of these measurements - ed.) And independent quality control of manufactured products.

In order to organize the provision of technical support services and metrological support within the perimeter of the company, as well as to ensure technical competencies and production resources, the structure of the IT Service consolidated the IT assets of the combined Company on the basis of the service provider RN-Inform (see the chart of the organizational structure of the IT Service).
