2020: Release of the application

In the middle of March, 2020 BMW released the eDrive Zones application which automatically transfers hybrid cars to the electromode depending on location. The similar mode, the car maker considers, is of particular importance at entrance of the machine to zones with the low level of emissions which are scattered across the whole Europe.

A system was developed by BMW Group in Rotterdam. On the test stand to electric vehicles GPS coordinates of the predeterminated urban areas using the special application connected to the hybrid car were set. At entrance to these geozones cars or automatically switched to completely electric mode, or offered this option to drivers.

Nevertheless, a lot of things depend on existence of sufficient battery power. The majority of the hybrid BMW cars can pass up to 60 miles (97 km) in completely electric mode; if there is not enough battery power for a trip in the electric mode, the car will switch back to the internal combustion engine.

Also submitted to BMW the scheme of loyalty of BMW Points which will reward drivers of hybrid cars for each mile on completely electric mode. Points will double at trips in zones with the low level of emissions. The saved-up points can be exchanged for such privileges as free charging at BMW stations. Such approach should stimulate drivers as often as possible to use the electromode of hybrid cars.

Earlier in 2020 confirmed BMW that stops production of two diesel engines against the background of the growing pressure from regulating authorities. All these measures in anticipation of an official debut of the BMW i4 electric car in 2021 specify that BMW is seriously intended to be passed to production of cars of new generation.[1]
