2021: Electronic Arts bought Glu Mobile for $2.4 billion
In early February 2021, Electronic Arts announced the purchase of Glu Mobile for $2.4 billion. The companies expect the deal to close in the second quarter of 2021 and be EA's second major acquisition in recent months, following the purchase of UK game developer and publisher Codemasters.
The American studio Glu Mobile was founded in 2001, and its range includes about 200 games, including Tap Sports Baseball, Dine Dash Adventures and Disney Sorcerer's Arena. The developer specializes in mobile games with a large budget and often produces large projects with high-quality 3D graphics. However, at the same time, But Glu Mobile does not ignore free games that have been on the market for years and generate revenue from microtransactions. Earlier, Electronic Arts executives told investors about plans to switch to this business model.
| The acquisition of an experienced and talented Glu team will allow us to become leaders in the mobile market, because we are the largest gaming platform in the world and continue to grow. With an extensive intellectual property portfolio and a growing audience, we will be able to provide our customers with a new, exciting gaming experience, "said EA CEO Andrew Wilson. |
According to Wilson, the purchase of Glu Mobile will double the size of the company's mobile division, and the number of monthly audiences on smartphones and tablets will exceed 100 million users.
For his part, Glu Mobile chief executive Nick Early is also pleased with the deal, which will provide excellent returns for all of the company's shareholders. He noted:
| This deal was the culmination of our work to provide players with world-class interactive opportunities. As part of Electronic Arts, we will continue to look for new opportunities in the mobile gaming industry.[1] |
