2023: Thoma Bravo bought Magnet Forensics for $1.3 billion
On January 20, 2023, investment firm Thoma Bravo announced an agreement to buy forensic software firm Magnet Forensics.
Canadian Magnet Forensics, founded in 2009, creates products to help forensic experts investigate cyber attacks and digital crime. These are solutions for case management, incident response, human resource analysis, etc. For example, ON Magnet Axiom Cyber offers digital forensic expertise for enterprises that need to perform remote data acquisition, as well as collect and analyze evidence from computers, cloud platforms and mobile devices. Other Magnet Forensics products are for law enforcement, federal agencies, the armed forces, and intelligence.
The transaction amount is $1.8 billion Canadian dollars (approximately $1.3 billion at the exchange rate as of January 31, 2023). Upon completion of the merger, Magnet Forensics will be merged with digital forensic solutions provider Grayshift LLC. The two companies' proposals are supposed to create "a powerful end-to-end digital investigation platform that will allow more public safety agencies around the world to seek justice, solve crimes and protect victims." The sale of Magnet Forensics has already been approved by the company's board of directors, but is still subject to shareholder approval at a meeting scheduled for March 2023.
Digital evidence is becoming an increasingly important aspect of investigations, and the combined company will be well positioned to further expand the market, accelerate innovation, and deliver even better solutions to its customers. We look forward to leveraging Thoma Bravo's extensive industry, operations and investment expertise to help the combined company realize huge growth opportunities in the future, "said Thoma Bravo partner Hudson Smith[1] |
