Data breach

Vulnerabilities after a data leak in the IT infrastructure of the logistics operator SDEK have not yet been eliminated, despite the restoration of work after a large-scale cyber attack that paralyzed the company's systems for several days. This became known on June 4, 2024.

On this day, the Kommersant newspaper, referring to data from information security specialists, reported that part of the SDEK client base with information about shipments for April 2024 was in the public domain.

Part of the SDEK client base with information on shipments for April 2024 was in the public domain

As a result of the leak, the senders' data, information about the sending points, descriptions of package attachments, as well as photos of the shipments themselves were compromised. According to experts, the cause of the incident was open gaps in the SDEK protection system, which remained even after the restoration of the functionality of the services.

Alexey Parfentiev, head of analytics at SearchInform, warns of the risks of a repeat attack on SDEK. He emphasizes that information that fell into the hands of cybercriminals can be used to organize new intrusions into the operator's infrastructure if all vulnerabilities are not promptly eliminated.

Previously, SDEK has already faced leaks of customer data. So, in 2022, there were several incidents that affected the personal information of millions of users. Experts name hacking hackers, incorrect server access settings, and potential insider actions among the possible reasons.

The data leak of the SDEK in May 2024 is already called by cybersecurity specialists one of the largest in the history of the Russian market. The company will have to conduct a thorough investigation of the incident, eliminate all vulnerabilities and take comprehensive measures to prevent similar situations in the future in order to protect the information of its customers and partners.[3]

After the cyber attack, SDEK accepts payment only in cash, and parcels are sent without a delivery time

As of June 2, 2024, the Russian delivery operator SDEK continues recovery work after the ransomware virus attack. Certain services do not function. In particular, the company accepts payment only in cash, and parcels are sent without specifying the delivery time.

According to the Telegram channel "Shot Check," in the vast majority of SDEK branches in different cities of Russia on the specified date, payment for bank cards is not available. There are exceptions, but this is "a rarity." In addition, employees of the departments cannot name the timing of the delivery of parcels: neither new, nor those on the way. All shipments arrive late, with delivery times up about 40%. In addition, the company's website has increased the response time of support employees to 40 minutes.

SDEK itself emphasizes that by the date under consideration, the bulk of the service's functionality is again available to customers. At the same time, the company warns of more frequent attempts to obtain personal data by fraudsters against the background of cyber intrusion. Therefore, SDEK asks users to be vigilant and never name the confirmation codes arriving at the phone number during calls.

From the morning of June 1, you can again send packages at all our points of issue of orders. We have successfully tested the work today and thousands of parcels are already on the way to our addressees. As before, you can receive packages without a passport using the CDEK ID service. For convenience and peace of mind, you can always find out where your package is right now by entering its number on our website, "the SDEK said in an official statement.[4]

The failure of the SDEK occurred due to a ransomware virus. Packages are not issued for the third day

On May 29, 2024, the failure of the SDEK continues for the third day. According to preliminary data, the reason for the malfunction of the parcel delivery service was the attack of the ransomware virus.

The hacker group Head Mare claimed responsibility for the shutdown. On her page on the social network X (formerly Twitter), she said that the ransomware was used in her attack. This information was confirmed to Vedomosti by a source in the SDEK, and an interlocutor in one of the large companies in the field of information security.

May 29, 2024 failure in the work of SDEK continues for the third day

According to Igor Bederov, head of the investigation department at T.Hunter and market expert at NTI SafeNet, the ransomware virus penetrates the system in several ways: often users download it through e-mail or other messages, less often the system is hacked.

The head of the analytics department of "SearchInform" Alexei Parfentiev, in a conversation with the publication, noted that ransomware is also called ransomware viruses, because most often hackers talk about what needs to be done to "decrypt" the data: who to contact, how and how much to pay.

Misha Berggren, director of communications at SDEK, told RIA Novosti that the points for issuing orders for the operator of the delivery of documents and goods will restore the issuance of shipments no later than May 29, 2024.

File:Aquote1.png
During Monday, we made significant progress in restoring full-fledged work, but, unfortunately, we were not ready to resume service. The SDEK team sincerely apologizes to all customers whose expectations we did not meet, - the company said on the Telegram channel at 02:00 Moscow time on May 28, 2024.

Ruslan Permyakov, deputy director of the NTI Competence Center "Technologies of Trusted Interaction" based on TUSUR, in a conversation with Vedomosti, drew attention to the fact that the work of SDEK depends on the functioning of IT systems, so problems can lead to large losses due to downtime.[5]

SDEK has a second day of IT failure: Parcels are not sent or issued, the application does not work

On May 26, 2024, SDEK announced the suspension of order processing. The company had a major IT failure, which lasts the second day.

File:Aquote1.png
For technical reasons, we have temporarily suspended the processing of packages. This will help to avoid possible errors in manual processing. At the moment, we are at the final stage of restoring the full performance of our services. On May 27 [2024], the points for issuing orders will continue to operate normally, according to the official page of the SDEK service on the VKontakte social network.

Another 100,000 lines from "SDEK.Market" with name and surname, login, email address, phone, password hashed (MD5 with salt), as well as profile creation and login date. This database covers data from August 27, 2018 to March 15, 2022.

File:Aquote1.png
We are studying the database posted on the network, and are already finding out the circumstances of what happened. The data in the database is similar to the database of clients CDEK.Shopping and SDEK.Market. It is already known that the database did not include the numbers of identity documents and customer bank card data. We are doing everything to prevent the spread of the leak, - said the SDEK (quoted by TASS).
File:Aquote2.png

This is not the first leak in the SDEK. In June 2022, users filed a class action lawsuit against the company for 2.2 million rubles to recover compensation for the leakage of personal data. The lawsuit involves 22 users of the SDEK service, more than 100 more users sent applications to join the class action lawsuit, said the law firm DestraLegal.ru, which represents the plaintiffs.

The leak of data from users of the SDEK service may indicate that the operator has not taken the necessary and sufficient measures to ensure their safety, said Boris Feldman, legal director of the DestraLegal.ru.

Another user data leak, it affected 25 million people

Almost five months after the data leak of Russian and Ukrainian users of the SDEK, another such incident occurred. This time he touched about 25 million customers of the delivery service. This became known in mid-July 2022.

  • the Telegram company's channels Infosecurity  and Information Leaks reported that the data in the public domain was divided into three files: in the first there are more than 160 million records with customer data (full name of the client, email address, name of the sending company, sender/recipient ID, pickup point code), in the second - more than 30 million lines with information about individuals and legal entities, and in the third - more than 90 million lines with phones and sender/recipient IDs.

New data leak SDEK affected almost 25 million customers

Sergei Trukhachev, head of the Infosecurity special services unit, believes that together with the last leak, SDEK leaked the data of tens of millions of customers in total, which could become a "record in the Russian market." In mid-July 2022, he warned that in the near future the attackers would analyze and combine both leaks and form one of the largest illegally obtained bases of Russian citizens.

PR-director of SDEK Anna Jospa told RBC that by July 14, 2022, an internal investigation is being carried out, the circumstances are being clarified. She declined any additional comments at the request of the publication.

Alexey Kubarev, an expert at the Dozor PTK-Solar Product Center, noted that the leak could claim the title of the largest in 2022. According to him, it could contain data from up to 30% of Russian Internet users. Kubarev added that the cause of the leak could be both hacker attacks or hacking, as well as an internal attacker draining and incorrect settings for accessing the company's servers from the Internet. After the first leak, SDEK called it the cause of "politically motivated hacker attacks."[10]

Data leakage of Russian and Ukrainian users

On February 28, 2022, SDEK confirmed the leak of data from Russian and Ukrainian users after two days earlier, information appeared on Telegram channels that two files with personal information of the company's customers were posted on the shadow forum.

File:Aquote1.png
We do not deny the fact of hacking - he really was. SDEK, like many other Russian companies and institutions, such as the kremlin.ru website, were held hostage to the situation and, accordingly, the object of hacker attacks. But here it is important to emphasize that until February 24, SDEK delivered parcels to and from Ukraine, and, accordingly, the data of Ukrainian customers got into the network. Thus, hackers harmed not only Russian citizens, but also Ukrainians, - RBC quotes the words of a representative of the SDEK.

According to the publication, as a result of the leak, two tables with data got to the hackers: in one 466 million lines (user ID and phone), in the second - 822 million lines (ID, full name and email address). However, according to SDEK, they did not contain document numbers and other important personal information, including payment information. The archive was about 30 GB. Those who posted it reported that the archive did not contain a complete database (for example, there were no delivery addresses), but admitted that more detailed information would be released in the future.

According to a company representative, by February 28, 2022, SDEK is facing spam attacks on its social media pages and is doing everything possible to solve this problem.

On February 24, 2022, SDEK, as well as a number of other delivery services and Russian Post, warned of forced delays in connection with the termination of flights with several southern regions of the country, as well as the suspension of work on destinations to and from Ukraine.
