Sales of robotic surgeons in Russia for the year reached 11.1 billion rubles
At the end of 2023, sales of professional medical robots in Russia amounted to about 11.1 billion rubles ($0.14 billion). The demand for robotic surgery in the Russian Federation is growing rapidly, as stated by the review of the Institute for Statistical Research and Economics of Knowledge (ISIEZ) of the Higher School of Economics, published on August 5, 2025.
Analysts note that in 2024, about 5.7 thousand procedures were performed in Russia using Intuitive Surgical robots (da Vinci systems). For comparison, in 2007, only 11 operations using robotic installations were performed in the Russian Federation.
The study says that about 50 companies with projects and developments in the field of medical robotics are operating on the Russian market. Especially significant demand is recorded in the segment of rehabilitation robots. At a high level are domestic robotic prostheses and simulators for restoring the work of hands and feet. These areas are supported by the state, including through subsidies.
According to estimates, in Russia the share of medical robots from the total market of professional service robots in the country in 2023 was at the level of 61%. The same indicator is observed in the United States. In Germany, this value is at 64%, in China - 60%, and in Switzerland - 87%.
The authors of the report emphasize that due to the small scale of implementation, medical robots are not able to solve all current health problems. However, their use can increase the effectiveness of medical care, as well as reduce the burden on medical professionals, which is especially important in the case of complex surgical operations and rehabilitation programs. At the same time, the development and commercialization of domestic developments in the field of robotic medical systems will contribute to reducing the cost of relevant procedures.[1]

2017: Creation of a robot surgeon in Russia
On April 5, 2017, the Institute of Design and Technological Informatics of the Russian Academy of Sciences (ICTI RAS) presented the first domestic assisting robot surgeon, which is an analogue of the American Da Vinci. Its cost will be about 600 thousand rubles, which is about five times cheaper than an imported installation.
Sergei Sheptunov, who is the director of the institute, spoke about some of the features of the future invention. The fundamental difference between the domestic product and the foreign robot surgeon Da Vinci is weight. A foreign machine weighs one ton, while domestic developments will weigh 4.5 kg in total.
The manipulators of the device will also differ. Russian scientists plan that the length of the manipulations will be 20 centimeters, which is more than 10 times the accuracy of the Da Vinci manipulator. It will be possible to control a domestic robot surgeon either using 3D glasses or using a monitor.
The project is financed by the Federal Agency for Scientific Organizations (FANO of Russia) and the Moscow government. Sheptunov also noted that his personal funds, as well as funds from other developers, were invested in the project. Olga Kolotilova, Director of the Department for the Development of the Pharmaceutical and Medical Industry of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation, announced the department's readiness to support this project within the framework of the state program for the development of the pharmaceutical and medical industry, allocating subsidies for organizing the production of robots, but did not disclose the amount of proposed funding.
The Industrial Development Fund can also provide the project with a loan at 5% per annum. The Institute of Design and Technological Informatics of the Russian Academy of Sciences plans to attract foreign investors.[2]
