The staff of Dell Technologies Capital investment fund consists of experts in creation of new businesses. Their mission — to assist young teams in development of the innovative technological solutions and their output to the commercial market. It is a team of investors, the total amount of investments under their management in a year reached about 100 million dollars (these falls of 2017).
The Dell Technologies Capital fund acts as an investment link for all main and Dell Technologies subsidiary companies: Dell Dell EMC Pivotal RSA SecureWorks Virtustream and VMware. Five years of the hidden work later the fund for the first time declared itself publicly in 2017. The headquarters of fund is in Palo Alto (USA), representations — in Boston, Austin (USA) and Herzliya (Israel).
2020: Investments into Xometry
In September, 2020 Xometry announced attraction of $75 million investments. Most of all money to a startup was provided by T. Rowe Price Associates company (how many, it is not specified). Read more here.
2018: 24 investment rounds.
- Since 2012 the fund invested in 81 projects; many companies from a portfolio of fund show growth rates over 100%, revenue of some startups exceeds $50 million. Among all the investments made for the last year a third is sent to projects in the field of artificial intelligence and machine learning. The rest — in projects in the field of the information security, infrastructures of new generation and other areas having a strategic importance for Dell Technologies and its businesses.
- After the official declaration of fund 24 investment rounds were carried out; a third of investments is directed to projects in the field of artificial intelligence and machine learning, the rest — to projects in the field of information security, infrastructures of new generation and an ecosystem of developers
- 11 portfolio companies were purchased or merges underwent the procedure; 3 companies for the last 7 months entered the stock market — DocuSign, MongoDB and Zscaler. Their total market capitalization as a result of share placing reached $11 billion
- Zscaler which entered the stock market in March, 2018 is a pioneer in the field of network security during an era of cloud computing; the Dell Technologies fund headed the very first round of investments into this company in 2012.
- It is announced acquisition of Wavefront software developer by VMware company and acquisition of JAMF developer by Vista fund
2017: Record number of investment transactions
On November 2, 2017 Dell Technologies Capital announced the number of investments, record for five years, announced in six months — from February to September. In the first half of the current financial year the fund closed 27 investment transactions. Their number included investments of rounds of A and B into the technology companies which developments have a strategic importance for Dell Technologies.
Some of the companies, the received investments of Dell Technologies Capital fund in the first half of the current financial year:
- Datometry (virtualization of databases);
- Jask (data protection);
- Minio (multicloud object data storage);
- OpsMx (management of releases of software products);
- RedLock (cloud protection);
- RiskLens (cloud risk management);
- RiskRecon (risk management of cyber attacks);
- Otonomo (a single platform for "smart" cars);
- Zingbox (protection of IoT-devices).
The investment fund cooperates with recently created division which activity is devoted to IoT. He will give support to division, having reported results of researches and a contact information of partners. Access of division to an external ecosystem of innovations will allow to increase significantly the speed of new product development in such areas as IoT, artificial intelligence and machine learning.
