2025: Hackers hacked the US Treasury and obtained gigantic amounts of classified information
Chinese hackers gained access to workstations and documents of the Ministry of Finance USA as a result cyber attacks of December 8, 2024. According to the The New York Times attackers, they used the stolen security key of the developer company to BeyondTrust remotely access the ministry's systems. A BeyondTrust spokesman said the compromise of the API key was discovered on December 5, 2024, after which it was immediately recalled. The attack only affected the Remote Support product, which is used by 75% of Fortune 100 organizations.
The FBI a nd the Infrastructure and Cybersecurity Agency (CISA) are involved in the investigation of the incident. Experts associate the attack with the Advanced Persistent Threat group, sponsored by China.
Earlier in 2024, Chinese hackers from the Salt Typhoon group hacked at least nine American telecommunications companies. They also received a list of phone numbers tapped by the Justice Department to spy on suspected criminals.
Hackers also hacked Commerce Minister Gina Raimondo's emails during decisions to restrict Chinese companies' access to advanced technology. Similar attacks were carried out on State Department systems.
In response to the cyber attacks, the US Commerce Department banned China Telecom's remaining operations in the country. The representative of the Chinese diplomatic mission in Washington denied the accusations, saying that the United States itself is the largest source of cyber attacks in the world.
The U.S. Treasury Department monitors sensitive data on global financial systems and assesses the state of China's economy. The agency also imposes sanctions against Chinese companies helping Russia in the conflict with Ukraine.
Hacked systems have been shut down and no evidence has been found of hackers' continued access to information. The Treasury Department is preparing a detailed report for Congress on the incident.[1]

2020: Hacker attack
On December 13, 2020, it became known about cyber attacks on the US Treasury Department and the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA). According to Reuters, the attackers are supported by a foreign government, but which one is not specified.
According to the Washington Post, the hacker group APT29 or Cozy Bear, allegedly working for the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service, is behind the cyber attacks.
The Russian embassy in Washington categorically denies the accusations.

According to Reuters sources, a meeting of the US National Security Council was convened due to a cyber attack at the White House on December 12, 2020. The agency's interlocutors say that American intelligence fears a possible hacking of other units of the country's government.
The Washington Post writes that hackers managed to hack into the systems through updates to the IT company SolarWinds, a software provider to the US government. They confirmed that the updates released from March to June 2020 could use the "national state" for their own purposes.
Hackers reportedly gained access to Microsoft Office 365 software. This allowed them to track the mail of NTIA employees for several months. The Ministry of Finance and Microsoft did not comment on the fact of the hacks.
