Postgres Pro Enterprise 16.2.1

On April 1, 2024, Postgres Professional announced the release of the Postgres Pro Enterprise update, the flagship version of the DBMS for high-load systems. The release includes the capabilities of the major version of Postgres Pro Enterprise 16.1.1, as well as PostgreSQL 16.2 and a number of developments to optimize security, queries, analytics and work with large objects.

Postgres Pro Enterprise 16.2.1

As reported, among the key updates to Enterprise 16.2.1:

  • Integration with Citus extension. Citus is an extension for PostgreSQL that provides PostgreSQL scalability by charring data across multiple PostgreSQL nodes. Integration with Citus will allow you to process analytical data on dozens of servers. Unlike the Postgres Pro Shardman database, released in February 2024, which is focused on OLTP load, Citus is focused on analytical OLAP load. The user will be able to choose the type of charring that is more suitable for his application.
  • Replan Request Rescheduler. Adaptive query execution-The reoptimization that is applied during query execution. As part of Enterprise 16.2.1, the first AQE component, Replan, is available to users, which is triggered by the maximum execution time.
  • Working with large objects. An dbms_lob extension has been added that allows you to access and manage certain parts of large objects (LOBs) or large objects in their entirety. CLOB, BFILE, and temporary BLOBs are supported.
  • Additional pg_proaudit capabilities. The pg_proaudit extension allows you to log security-related events. The updated version of pg_proaudit 2.0 supports rules that summarize typical groups of user actions, as well as triggering rules by user groups, and not by their individual accounts.
  • Packages with private functions and variables. You have entered two package modifiers,# private and# export. The# private modifier defines functions and procedures as internal, and the# export modifier defines which package variables are public.
  • Associative arrays and hash collections (similar to indexed by PL/SQL tables in Oracle). Initially, associative arrays were not supported in the PL/pgSQL programming language, and this created migration problems - you had to simulate working with them manually using complex and inefficient designs in the code. Postgres Pro Enterprise 16 is the first to support such arrays. Infinite key-value structures are implemented in the pg_variables extension. The key can be either an integer or a character value. PL/pgSQL stored procedures and functions in Postgres Pro are adapted to use such arrays and collections.
  • Support for associative arrays and hash collections in the ora2pgpro automatic code conversion utility. ora2pgpro is a solution for automatically porting Oracle packages and standalone transactions into Postgres Pro Enterprise packages and standalone transactions. The updated version of the ora2pgpro utility 24.1.1 has added the functionality of automatic conversion of PL/SQL code working with collections (varray, table of... indexed by...) to the equivalent code for the Postgres Pro Enterprise DBMS. This will further reduce the amount of work when migrating code from Oracle DBMS to Postgres Pro Enterprise.

Other updates and changes to this release include:

  • BiHA Built-in Failover Cluster upgraded to version 1.1 with optimized performance and added capabilities.
  • A crash_info option has been added to manage the collection of server failure information.
  • Added a apache_age extension that provides functionality for working with graph databases.
  • The application pg_probackup updated to version 2.7.2 Enterprise: optimized memory use for remote backup.
  • Updated the pg_variables extension: added iterator functionality for different collections, as well as functions for working with common collection variables.
  • The pgpro_stats extension has been updated to version 1.7 - optimized performance and fixed bugs.
  • The module pgpro_pwr updated to version 4.4. Added support for pgpro_stats 1.7, and the reports include updated interactive features and substring-based filtering.
  • sr_plan module - The updated version improves performance, adds the ability to freeze query plans based on a set of instructions, and saves different query plans with different sets of parameterized constants.

2023

Postgres Professional revenue in 2023 increased by 50%, to 5 billion rubles

Postgres Professional at the end of December summed up the preliminary results of 2023 and reported on the work done. The company's turnover for the reporting period amounted to about 5 billion rubles, which is almost 50% more than in 2022.

Having invested 1.7 billion rubles in the construction of the PostgreSQL DBMS development and distribution system, invested by a strategic investor with the requirement to create an industrial reliable and high-performance DBMS for large businesses on the basis of PostgreSQL. As a result, the company managed to reach self-sufficiency in 3 years and bring income.

File:Aquote1.png
The growth rate is slightly less than last year, but still quite significant, "explained Ivan Panchenko, Deputy General Director of Postgres Pro. - According to the research of the Center for Strategic Research, we were in the first place in the DBMS market - this is an independent third-party confirmation.
File:Aquote2.png

At the same time, the company also increased the number of employees by 50%, reached an indicator of 250 people. Moreover, about 90 engineers are actually developing the software, of which half are working to improve the basis of the PostgreSQL version. Postgres Pro's contribution to open database development was also noted by EnterpriseDB, which is developing the main version of the PostgreSQL kernel. She put Postgres Professional in second place after herself in the ranking of participants in the development community of this open DBMS.

In addition to Postgres Professional, there are also other domestic companies in the ranking: Kontur and Arenadata.

File:Aquote1.png
It is very difficult for a high-tech team to grow by 50% because people need to be trained and brought into the course of business, - said Ivan Panchenko. - You can't just give a person a textbook and say: "read and get to the machine." People should do things that no one has done before, and there are no textbooks for this case. We learned how to make onbourding live in the team. And we are not as bad as others, things are with personnel hunger. Due to the fact that we have interesting tasks, they willingly go to us. The spirit of the technology startup in the company is still alive, although we already have 250 people, and they are coming to us, because we are interested and we solve interesting problems, and we have good relationships between people.
File:Aquote2.png

Postgres Professional has built its own commercial version of PostgreSQL, which has at least 40 additional features and uses secure development technologies. The company's production pipeline is configured so that after the release of a new version of the basic PostgreSQL, which is called Standard in the Postgres Pro delivery, it takes several months before the commercial features of Postgres Pro Enterprise are updated. Thus, PostgreSQL 16, released in September, is now becoming the main version for the Postgres Pro Enterprise 16 version, the release of which the company announced at the end of December 2023.

In the new version of the commercial distribution, previously developed functions of the commercial version will be available, but several new ones will be added. In particular, in the Enterprise 16 version, a failover cluster management system will be available out of the box, which is called BiHA (Build-in High Availability).

To meet the FSTEC requirements for DBMS, the Postgres Professional team divided the DBMS superuser into two roles: an administrator without data access and a data protection administrator. In addition, the new version of the DBMS will use an adaptive query scheduler (AQO 2.0), which uses elements of artificial intelligence to optimize work.

To simplify the migration of applications from Oracle DBMS, Postgres Pro Enterprise 16 will also implement feature packages that are similar to those used in Oracle. Such packages allow you to automate the migration process, including stored procedures. In particular, in version 16, packets appear for networking UTL_SMTP, UTL_MAIL and UTL_HTTP, as well as for working with DBMS_APPLICATION_INFO and DBMS_LOB metadata.

In addition, Postgres Pro developers plan to launch features for working with external files up to 4 GBa, which will reduce labor costs when migrating from Oracle.

According to the company's experts, in 2024 the demand for DBMS solutions will grow, but slightly. The drivers include data growth, the introduction of automation systems, the transition to fast development methods and cloud solutions.

In general, according to the company's forecasts, in 2024-2025. market growth should stabilize after falling in 2022, and, as a result, should reach 2021 indicators.

Sharing Postgres Pro Enterprise Manager

Postgres Professional on December 11, 2023 announced the release of Postgres Pro Enterprise Manager (PPEM), a graphical database management platform.

To gain access to the platform, it is enough to be a user of any DBMS of the Postgres Pro line. PPEM can also be used for hybrid landscapes: Postgres Pro + open source DBMS PostgreSQL.

The solution covers the full range of database administrator tasks data and greatly simplifies and speeds up work on routine tasks. The RREM is implemented on the principle of a "single window" and makes it possible to get everything you need information in. browser The console allows you to perform operations using convenient configuration wizards without requiring knowledge of the syntax of commands. Built-in monitoring allows you to track basic performance metrics and create your own graphics that visualize the load on the customer's information system database.

Technologically, Postgres Pro Enterprise Manager is a three-level application installed on a separate server. Interaction with target database instances is carried out using small agent modules installed on the corresponding servers. The end user works with the RREM through a web browser.

Postgres Pro Enterprise Manager allows an administrator to perform tasks in four main categories:

  • Maintenance and configuration. Includes tasks such as: managing instances, databases, table spaces; viewing information in the information panel (dashboard); visualization of the database schema; Filtering the list of instances configuration presets for 1C ; More information about the instance Working with the event log Working with instance databases Working with instance parameters authentication management .
  • Performance diagnostics. Visualization of diagnostic metrics through graphs, the ability to create your own graphs using an additional set of metrics, scaling time periods, viewing statistics on SQL queries, viewing statistics on sessions, viewing the plan of an active query, visualizing query plans.
  • Monitoring of scheduled tasks. Basic tasks vacuum/analyze/reindex with control through the job console, which displays the status, start and end times, and the full execution log for each job.
  • Backup and recovery. Backup/recovery/validate/merge tasks, including the benefits of pg_probackup: compression, parallelism, incremental modes, s3, and more.

File:Aquote1.png
The development of the first-class technical capabilities of DBMS has already made it possible to deploy Postgres Pro in the information systems of large companies in the country, providing high performance, reliability, security and easy scalability. Now we have taken an important step in increasing the comfort of using DBMS. Thanks to the platform, administrators can quickly and conveniently work with databases without the need to dive deep into the technical features of the product. In addition, the platform will be an additional advantage of the system for customers migrating from Oracle DBMS, where the use of such tools was familiar, "said Ivan Panchenko, Deputy General Director of Postgres Professional.
File:Aquote2.png

The Postgres Professional team intends to develop PPEM in the direction of additional functionality to expand the capabilities of diagnostics, control and optimization of the performance of Postgres Pro DBMS. Near-term plans include protocol account integration, LDAP pgpro_pwr profiler support, failover cluster management, and more.

Postgres Pro Enterprise 15.1.1

On February 2, 2023, Postgres Professional announced the availability of an updated DBMS for high-load Postgres Pro Enterprise 15.1.1 systems. The version includes all the features of PostgreSQL 15 and Postgres Pro Standard 15 released in the fall of 2022, as well as additional Postgres Professional developments. In 2023, an updated version of Postgres Pro Enterprise was released three months earlier than in previous years, thanks to the optimization of software technology.

Postgres Pro Enterprise 15.1.1

According to the company, the development of this version took into account the growing demand of customers for software tools for optimizing migration from Oracle DBMS. The following changes have been made:

  • Oracle-style Packages support. The basic functionality of Oracle DBMS packages (sets of functions and procedures) is implemented in Postgres Pro Enterprise 15 to optimize PL/SQL code migration when switching from Oracle to PostgreSQL. From a technical point of view, package support is an extension of the syntax of the PL/pgSQL language (with small additions in the database engine), thanks to which a functional analogue of Oracle packages is implemented and a number of additional commands are introduced to work with them.
  • Passing positional parameters to the script in psql. Thanks to this change, Postgres Pro Enterprise will be able to create more flexible and universal shell scripts for working with DBMS. This optimizes the adaptation of SQL scripts when migrating from Oracle DBMS, where such functionality is familiar to the user.

With growing data protection requirements, including personal and trade secret information, Postgres Pro Enterprise 15.1.1 has the ability to anonymize and masking - Extends the masking pgpro_anonymizer. data A data masking (obfuscation) module has been added to Postgres Pro Enterprise 15.1.1 for security in stored data enterprise-level systems, as well as for anonymized copies DB for use in environments testings and development. Users will pgpro_anonymizer have access to static and dynamic masking, as well as creating a masked dump. In the future, Postgres Professional plans to expand the functionality of this module.

The role of backup and recovery in large enterprise DBMS is difficult to overestimate, so with each release Postgres Pro Enterprise optimizes the corresponding tools, this release was also no exception - the addition of pg_probackup Enterprise with updated capabilities. Based on pg_probackup, a backup utility for pg_probackup Enterprise environments has been developed. The functionality of its first version includes:

  • Performance-enhancing I/O subsystem
  • S3 protocol support for private and public cloud storage;
  • Ensure that CFS (data compression) is compatible with the incremental backup engine
  • All backup modes (DELTA, PAGE, and PTRACK) are supported, but PTRACK is the recommended incremental backup method for large databases;
  • Support for LZ4 compression algorithms and ZSTD.

In addition to the aforementioned changes and a number of optimizations for large and high-load databases, Postgres Pro Enterprise 15.1.1 includes all features of Postgres Pro Standard 15, including:

  • JSON processing functions from the SQL:2016 standard in addition to the previously implemented JSONPATH language;
  • readiness to work with the TimescaleDB extension (after the official announcement of support by its developer PostgreSQL 15);
  • Add a tds_fdw module to optimize migration from MS SQL Server
  • official support for Elbrus processors.

As previously reported, in the Postgres Pro versions of the Standard and Enterprise editions, support has been discontinued since the 15th. OS Windows Postgres Pro Enterprise 15.1.1 does not support this operating system.

2022

Windows End of Support Announcement

In early November 2022, Postgres Professional announced plans to abandon Windows support in its products. According to Ivan Panchenko, CEO of the company, compatibility with Microsoft operating systems will be removed in the Postgres Pro Enterprise 15 version for corporate users.

In a conversation with CNews, Panchenko clarified that the decision to support Windows in the Standart DBMS, which is designed for a wider range of customers, has not yet been made by November 2, 2022. In general, the company adheres to the idea that support for any product cannot be stopped at once. For this reason, the innovation regarding the exclusion of support for the Windows line of previous versions of the Postgres Pro DBMS will not affect, Postgres Professional noted.

Postgres Pro DBMS will abandon Windows support

Postgres Pro is developed by Postgres Professional based on the classic free PostgreSQL. In Russia, it is the most popular product in import-substituting projects for the transition from Oracle and Microsoft DBMS, the newspaper notes.

According to the CEO of Postgres Professional, the demand for support for Windows is very low. The main interest falls on small companies working with 1C software.

Panchenko stressed that Postgres Professional is trying to integrate as tightly as possible in its developments with current Russian technologies - both software and hardware. The company's products support all variants of Russian processor architectures. In particular, Panchenko mentioned the Elbrus line, which is being developed by MCST.

File:Aquote1.png
We still support the Power processor architecture. Why? Because during testing, you can find bugs on it that cannot be found on Intel, "he said.[2]

Postgres Pro Enterprise 13.6.1 with an increased number of sections of the mapping hash table in the common buffer

Postgres Professional on March 30, 2022 announced the release of Postgres Pro Enterprise 13.6.1.

The release is based on PostgreSQL 13.6 and Postgres Pro Enterprise 13.5.1. Some of the changes in the release are aimed at improving product performance. For example, by replacing locks with atomic reading, access to the LSN field in the page header is optimized, caching of the block number corresponding to the page is implemented. This made it possible to reduce the latency of locks and speed up the receipt of block numbers, thereby ensuring better performance while simultaneously accessing several customers to the same blocks. The number of partitions of the mapping hash table in the total buffer has been increased to 1024, which will have a positive effect on performance in multi-core systems.

Other changes to 13.6.1 have been made to correct issues from previous versions. An error in CFS was fixed Windows , in which it led to invisible damage data in compressed table spaces - when started servers after restoring a copy or an abnormal stop. Addressed issue with deferred page conversion from 32-bit to 64-bit to identifiers transactions in read-only transactions or replicas. This could cause the converted pages to fail to synchronize with other replicas. Now, if the conversion is delayed, the pages will be marked as subject to WAL recording as full pages.

Also optimized are the out-of-memory process destruction (OOM) settings in the Postgres Pro service configuration. Previously, scoring correction was installed not only for postmaster, but also for all Postgres Pro processes. Because of this, when Postgres Pro exhausted all RAM, other important processes, such as sshd, could be destroyed. We also eliminated the segmentation error that occurred under certain conditions of calling the procedure when the plan_cache_lru_memsize parameter was set. Resolved issue where there were still *.cfm and other files to be deleted after deleting tables in compressed table space on disk.

In addition, Postgres Pro Enterprise 13.6.1 introduced support for Rocky Linux 8 and discontinued support for the outdated 8 operating systems Debian , Astra Linux Smolensk 1.5 and 6.3 MSVSphera. The mamonsu module is upgraded to version 3.4.0 and the pgpro_pwr extension is upgraded to version 3.7.

Version 11.13.1 and 13.4.1 Update Certification

Postgres Professional On January 27, 2022, the company announced that it had updated the certified Postgres Pro Enterprise, which is industrial DBMS for protection critical ones, in data two versions at once - 11.13.1 and 13.4.1.

It took about two months, of which internal tests and tests took 1.5 months, another two weeks it took the testing laboratory to check and prepare a technical conclusion. As a result, the certification procedure ended with the re-issuance of the FSTEC certificate No. 4063.

Two mid-criticality vulnerabilities have been fixed in the updated versions. The first, CVE-2021-20229, was to increase user access rights to individual table columns. A user with access to at least one column could specifically generate a SQL query to bypass column access restrictions. Due to the second vulnerability, CVE-2021-3677, attackers could form specially prepared requests and read arbitrary sections of the server's memory.

File:Aquote1.png
"Until now, we have updated the certificate only for the most recent major version, we have the 13th, but this time we have also updated the 11th," commented Ivan Panchenko, Deputy General Director of Postgres Professional. "This decision was made taking into account the fact that this version is used by quite a few Russian companies."
File:Aquote2.png

Ivan Panchenko also added that the previously certified version of Postgres Pro Enterprise was updated once a year, but now it is planned to do this more often in order to constantly improve the quality of the DBMS.

2020: Postgres Pro Enterprise upgrade to version 12

On March 23, 2020, Postgres Professional announced the release of the 12th version of its main product - Postgres Pro Enterprise DBMS - thereby matching the release number with the current version of PostgreSQL DBMS on which it is based.

The Russian DBMS Postgres Pro Enterprise 12 is designed for use in industrial systems where performance, reliability, high data security, instant recovery, compatibility and efficient work with the 1C: Enterprise platform are critical. Therefore, the Postgres Pro Enterprise 12 DBMS has a number of significant differences from the free version of PostgreSQL.

Postgres Pro Enterprise

The use of Postgres Pro Enterprise 12 DBMS significantly reduces the cost of operating information systems of large enterprises, ensuring a high level of reliability and security. In high-load systems, Postgres Pro Enterprise 12 will show a noticeable performance gain compared to PostgreSQL. The Postgres Pro family of products is included in the unified register of domestic software. Postgres Professional provides technical support for this DBMS in 24x7 mode.

What are the differences between the Postgres Pro Enterprise 12 DBMS and the free PostgreSQL DBMS?

  • 64-bit transaction count
  • Incremental backup at the block level
  • Offline transactions
  • Data compression
  • Multimaster
  • Support 1C
  • Portable tables
  • Scheduler Hints

In addition, the 12th version of the Postgres Pro Enterprise DBMS received a number of functional updates.

The following are significant differences between this version and Postgres Pro Enterprise 11.7.1:

  • The pg_recovery_settings view has become unnecessary because the recovery.conf content was included in postgresql.conf and can now be viewed through the pg_settings system view; You can change the primary_conninfo, restore_command, and primary_slot_name settings without restarting the server.
  • A modification that reduces the number of records in WAL generated when creating the GiST, GIN and SP-GiST indexes was included in PostgreSQL 12, so Postgres Pro products now include it in a slightly modified form. The format of the indexes has not changed, so all indexes must remain operational.
  • The de-duplication mechanism in index-B trees has undergone important changes. You can now disable de-duplication for indexes you create by using the CREATE INDEX command deduplicate_items option. In addition, for some operator classes and data types, de-duplication in index-B trees is no longer supported, as described in Subsection 62.4.2. The impact of these changes on the update procedure is covered in Subsection E.1.2.
  • The PTRACK mechanism has been thoroughly redesigned and received an updated external API. If you previously backed up using PTRACK in pg_probackup, you will need to upgrade the pg_probackup to version 2.2.6 or higher and set up PTRACK copying again. * The built-in connection pool has been significantly redesigned and is no longer considered experimental. Refer to Section 33.1 to learn more about the existing features of using this mechanism.
  • The multimaster extension has been improved:
    • The multimaster extension is recommended in a configuration with three nodes, one of which is a referee. For more information on configuring a cluster with a referee, see Subsection F.30.3.3.
    • You can now check the consistency of data on cluster nodes using the mtm.check_query () function.

  • CFS has improved compression management functionality:

    • Now you can choose compression algorithms. The published Postgres Pro supports the zstd (default), zlib and pglz algorithms. Additionally, other algorithms may be added.

  • A wait_state_id field for monitoring purposes has pg_stat_activity added to the view.
  • A plan_cache_lru_memsize parameter has been added that limits the amount of memory allocated to prepared operators. By default, this limit is now 8 MB, and the plan_cache_lru_size option is disabled.
  • Added a pgpro_stats extension that not only collects SQL statement execution statistics, but also counts waiting event statistics.
  • The mchar extension has been updated to version 2.1.
  • The dump_stat extension has been updated to version 1.2.

Postgres Pro Enterprise 11.4.1

On July 4, 2019, Postgres Professional released the Postgres Pro Enterprise 11.4.1 DBMS. This release is based on PostgreSQL 11.4 and Postgres Pro Enterprise 11.2.1.

Postgres Pro Enterprise 11.4.1

According to the company, all changes inherited from PostgreSQL 11.4 are described in the PostgreSQL 11.4 Release Notes. When comparing the updated release with Postgres Pro Enterprise 11.2.1, there are eight main differences.

There is only in the Postgres Pro Enterprise 11.4.1 DBMS:

  • Added support for OCUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 SP3.
  • Support for the Astra Linux "Eagle" 2.12 operating system has been added.
  • The module pg_pathman updated to version 1.5.8. This version, compared to the 1.5.5 delivered in the previous release of Postgres Pro, includes the following enhancements:
    • Fixed work with tables divided into multi-level sections. Previously, the SELECT FOR SHARE and SELECT FOR UPDATE commands for such tables could produce the following error: ERROR: variable not found in subplan target lists.
    • Improved pg_pathman stability.

  • The module pg_probackup updated to version 2.1.3.
  • Improved pgpro_scheduler expansion:

    • A schedule.auto_enabled configuration option has been added to determine whether the pgpro_scheduler will be enabled when the server is started. By default, pgpro_scheduler is not automatically enabled when the server is restarted.
    • Added the schedule.is_enabled () function to check if the pgpro_scheduler is currently running. The schedule.enabled configuration option that previously served this purpose is out of date.

  • Updated multimaster extension:

    • Added support for declarative pg_pathman syntax. Partitioning using pg_pathman functions is incompatible with the current multimaster implementation.

There are in the Postgres Pro Enterprise 11.4.1 DBMS and in the Postgres Pro Standard 11.4.1 DBMS:

  • Added support for Rosa Enterprise Linux Server 7 OS and COBALT ROSA (server edition) on the ROSA 7 platform. Previous versions of these operating systems are no longer supported.
  • Improved selectivity estimation for queries with IN operations, as well as conditions that include columns included in broader multi-column indexes.

Security Vision Compatibility

On June 28, 2019, Security Vision announced that it had confirmed the compatibility of a number of its software products with Postgres Professional. They became technology partners and issued appropriate certificates of compatibility. The details are here.

Postgres Pro Enterprise 11

On May 13, 2019, Postgres Pro announced the release of the 11th version of the Postgres Pro Enterprise 11 industrial database management system designed for high-load systems.

DBMS performance

According to the company, the version has twice the performance compared to the basic one and contains a number of improvements in terms of safety, reliability and ease of use. Postgres Pro Enterprise DBMS is included in the unified register of domestic software, the cost of operating the system is 5-7 times lower than foreign analogues. Postgres Pro Enterprise has found application in the information systems of the Federal Tax Service, the Ministry of Finance, Gazpromneft and other large organizations.

An experimental built-in connection puller has been added to the Postgres Pro Enterprise 11 version, which allows you to increase by an order of magnitude the number of users simultaneously working with the database. Faster index creation and JSON index search, added covering indexes. A number of improvements affected the optimization of SQL query DBMS, table partitioning and parallel execution of queries.

Expanded window functionality to full coverage of the SQL:2011 standard. Added support for transaction management in built-in procedural languages. Postgres Pro Enterprise's special ease-of-use capabilities also include built-in task scheduler, stand-alone transaction support, and a multi-master cluster that simplifies the construction and operation of a fault-tolerant configuration and allows you to update DBMS versions without stopping the system. In Postgres Pro Enterprise 11, the multimaster module has been updated to improve reliability and reduce system requirements.

The storage format in Postgres Pro Enterprise is modified to significantly reduce the risk of data loss and promptly notify the administrator of disk subsystem errors. Added database integrity and backup functionality. Fast, non-stop backups are possible, including incremental backups.

Postgres Pro Enterprise 11 includes support for advanced access control, including at the level of individual records. Storing checksums in files and blocks, as well as controlling database files, reduces the risk of information distortion. Using SHA2 increases the reliability of storing password hashes. Data compression makes it difficult for unauthorized access to information directly on disk. Monitoring session activity time reduces the risk of using connections for unauthorized access.

As of May 2019, within the database limit, Postgres Pro Enterprise 11 is able to withstand a load of up to 10,000 simultaneous users and 1 million transactions per second with a database size of up to 150 TB, while the maximum delay in restoring cluster health will be less than 1 second (data depending on server the equipment used).

DBMS tested for compatibility with Skala-R

On October 25, 2017, the companies IBS Interlab Rosplatforma Postgres Professional reported on DBMS Postgres Pro tests on hyperconverged hardware and software complexes under the "Rock-R" control of ON Rosplatforma under high load conditions.

"Rock-SR/Postgres Pro" is a pre-configured solution managed by a specialized version of Postgres Pro Enterprise. It uses high-speed drives, a network solution for delivering change logs and coordinating transactions.

The complex is designed for critical application scenarios with millions of transactions per second. For use in a wide range of systems, there are more economical scenarios for databases running PostgreSQL based on standard infrastructure components, but in such scenarios it remains fundamentally important to ensure the stable operation of this DBMS.

In the next release of P-Storage - the SDS-basis of the Skala-R complex - Rosplatforma paid special attention to optimization to support the features of PostgreSQL, such as the high frequency of system buffer synchronization calls, the strict requirement for their development with data fixation on permanent media, as well as the need for the shortest response time in conditions of a large number of I/O operations. Another significant change in the version of P-Storage was the transition to user space (Linux userspace) on SAN nodes, which significantly increased the number of I/O operations per second in the cluster.

Based on the test results, IBS Interlab, Rosplatforma and Postgres Professional prepared system configuration recommendations for customers and announced joint support for Postgres Pro on Russian Skala-R hyperconverged systems.

Inspection control Postgres Pro Certified

Postgres Professional on September 29, 2017 announced the completion of inspection control of the latest version of the Russian DBMS Postgres Pro Certified, based on Postgres Pro 9.6.3.1. The tests were carried out by the laboratory of NPO Echelon. Holders of the certified version of the Postgres Pro DBMS will receive the update for free.

Completed inspection of Postgres Pro DBMS

In addition to the fixed vulnerabilities in the Certified version:

The Certified version can be used to protect non-state secret information and personal data in information and automated control systems.

Postgres Pro DBMS has FSTEC Certificate No. 3637 valid until October 05, 2019. The document certifies that the Postgres Pro DBMS complies with the requirements of the guiding documents of the CBT RD for the 5th class, the RD EID for the 4th level and the Technical Specifications.

The company plans to certify the Postgres Pro Enterprise DBMS, designed for high-load systems of large enterprises. Postgres Pro and Postgres Pro Enterprise DBMS will regularly undergo inspection control in order to close the discovered vulnerabilities and update functionality.

Postgres Pro Enterprise 9.6.2.1 Release

Support for Postgres Pro SLA-based DBMS

In March ALP Group , announced the start of vendor technical support for universal and high-performance database management systems (). DBMS Postgres Pro Users will receive high-quality IT support based on service quality agreements () throughout the SLA Russian Federation, and SLA parameters apply to requests of any complexity. In addition, as part of this service, for the first time Russia , a universal mechanism for interaction of technical support services was implemented, protecting the user from an extremely common situation in which he finds himself between several vendors, and his IT problem is not solved.

2016

In the fall of 2016, Postgres Professional released a new product - a version of the DBMS for large Postgres Pro Enterprise customers, CEO Oleg Bartunov told TAdviser. At the end of November, the company is testing an internal release of 1.0, in mid-December plans to show version 1.5, and by the end of February 2017 - to provide customers with version 2.0.

Postgres Pro Enterprise is the first Russian DBMS for large companies. "Now in Russia the topic of technological independence is relevant, and many companies began to look for alternatives to imported commercial software. In the field of DBMS, the favorite is Open Source DBMS PostgreSQL, thanks to its rich capabilities, a liberal license and the presence of a Russian vendor - Postgres Professional, "says development manager Alexander Korotkov.

File:Aquote1.png
However, PostgreSQL DBMS does not meet all the requirements that large customers have. It is based on these requirements that we are developing Postgres Pro Enterprise, and we are counting primarily on demand from large Russian companies, "Alexander Korotkov explained to TAdviser.
File:Aquote2.png

The company began working on this fork (branch, version) of PostgreSQL in the spring of 2016. "Sometime in July 2016, we finally realized that our clients want new features and we need to start promoting our developments ourselves in our own fork without looking at compatibility," says Oleg Bartunov.

It so happens that companies are trying to make money on world-famous Open Source products by simply reselling them almost unchanged, says Alexander Korotkov: "But this does not apply to us, since our Postgres Pro Enterprise includes a lot of improvements compared to PostgreSQL."

The head of development told TAdviser about the key features of Postgres Pro Enterprize.

64-bit Transaction ID

It is very relevant for large clients, since on modern multi-core servers, the 32-bit transaction ID can overflow every few hours, explains Alexander.

Partitioning

It is very relevant because it makes it much easier to manage large tables.

Incremental backup

"In our case, we are talking about an incremental backup at the block level," explains Alexander Korotkov. - The DBMS server tracks data blocks that have changed since the previous backup and only includes them in the next incremental backup. Thus, having a full backup and a set of increments, you can recover at the time of any of these backups. "

File:Aquote1.png
This is especially important for large customers because they work with large amounts of data. And therefore, the issue of saving space, including space occupied by backups, is acute. In addition, removing an incremental backup is faster and creates less load on the server, explains Alexander Korotkov.
File:Aquote2.png

1C support

The company weighed the pros and cons of such an opportunity. The argument "against" was that some of the changes that are needed to support 1C could hypothetically prevent other users, but this has not yet been confirmed in practice, says Alexander. The "for" argument is obvious: this is the ability to take full advantage of the Enterprise version when operating 1C.

File:Aquote1.png
Both our tests and those of our partners show that Postgres Pro Enterprise with 1C support is faster than not only regular 1C support postgres, but also Microsoft SQL Server. Currently, we are in talks with 1C for Postgres Pro Enterpise to be officially announced as a DBMS supporting 1C, "Alexander Korotkov told TAdviser.
File:Aquote2.png

The development manager described some more changes made to Postgres Pro Enterprise (a complete list will be in the release notes):

  • The multimaster will provide high database availability and read scaling without changing the application.
  • Adaptive scheduling allows the query optimizer to learn from its errors, that is, apply machine learning methods to building more optimal query plans.
  • Compresses table spaces to reduce the amount of data stored by 3-10 times. At the same time, tests show that on many typical load profiles there is no significant decrease in performance.
  • Numerous indexing improvements, including covering indexes, support for finding closest neighbors in spgist and btree, a new index method rum, which in particular allows you to organize a very fast full-text search, reduce WAL traffic when creating spgist/gist/gin indexes.
  • Security improvements: SCRAM authentication and timeout for idle sessions.
  • Task Scheduler, which allows you to automate many administration tasks without using external utilities.
  • Offline transactions that are very useful in the implementation of logging.
  • Monitoring the progress of the request execution, which allows you to find out at what stage the request is, which has not yet completed its execution.
  • Scheduler hints, familiar to many users of commercial DBMS, allow the administrator to manually intervene in the formation of a specific request plan.
  • In-memory FDW. Now the in-memory direction is actively developing, specialized DBMS appear, traditional DBMS have in-memory engines. We are also not lagging behind, we are developing our own in-memory engine. At the beginning, our in-memory engine will work through the foreign data wrappers (FDW) interface, and then a full-fledged interface for pluggable storages will be developed.

Both existing customers of the company and potential ones are interested in the Enterprise version, says Alexander Korotkov. He expects that the enterprises will soon begin introducing the product.
