Free CMS Threat Study
Bitrix, Inc., the US representative office of '1C-Bitrix', published a 16-page study in February 2011 describing '10 pitfalls' of free content management systems. Alternatively, Bitrix offers its own products distributed under the terms of'hybrid licensing'. Most of Bitrix's arguments are unproven, according to a WordPress developer. The Bitrix, Inc. report begins by stating the fact that free CMS are used today in 90% of the most visited sites by Alexa rating. However, this is not the whole picture, Bitrix assures: 'As it turns out, SPO is mainly used in low-traffic sites with basic functionality'.
The authors of the report recognize the advantages of free CMS, in particular, TYPO3, WordPress and Joomla! 'These systems would never have become so popular if they had any fatal errors. They meet most of the requirements for simpler sites, and can even be adapted for use in online systems that have a high load '. However, in fact, everything is not so good, since 'software customers must pay attention to a number of factors that do not allow this concept to fully fulfill the requirements of the real business'.
The main content of the report is a point by point consideration of ten 'pitfalls' when using free CMS - supplier dependence, hidden costs and dubious total cost of ownership, lack of functionality'out of the box', ergonomic flaws, dubious security, a highly competitive market, technical support shortcomings, bias from medium and large companies, platform dependence and legal difficulties.
