Use of AR in the evaluation of new production facilities in the field
At the end of January 2022, for the first time in Russia, augmented reality (AR) began to be used in the assessment of new production facilities at the field. The corresponding project was implemented by Gazprom Neft.
Representatives of Rosprirodnadzor, while at their workplaces in Moscow and Orenburg, remotely inspected new wells of Gazprom Neft at the Yagodnoye field in the Orenburg region. The test was carried out using both video broadcasting and augmented reality tools. According to the results of the inspection, Rosprirodnadzor issued a conclusion on the compliance of wells with environmental standards, which made it possible to complete the assessment procedure and obtain permission to put the facilities into operation.
As noted in Gazprom Neft, the pilot experiment confirmed the high efficiency of AR technologies for remote control and acceptance of new construction facilities. Digital solutions increase speed and quality, reduce the cost of work, especially when inspecting in hard-to-reach and remote areas. In addition, technologies ensure the safety and efficiency of the assessment of new production facilities in the context of restrictions associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. In the future, Rosprirodnadzor may replicate the solution when accepting new construction facilities in other regions of Russia.
According to Evgeny Zagrebelny, General Director of Gazpromneft-Orenburg, the use of a remote format during inspections will optimize time and logistics costs and significantly increase the efficiency of the process. Rosprirodnadzor, in turn, added that the control tools built into the platform and the capabilities of audio-video recording also allow to increase the transparency of the events and provide additional opportunities for the subsequent analysis of the data obtained to make a final decision on the compliance of the object with the requirements of the legislation.[1]

Gazprom Neft launched drones for inventory of goods in warehouses
In November 2020, Gazprom Neft announced the start of the use of unmanned aerial vehicles for the purpose of inventory of cargo in warehouses. The company noted that drones made it possible to automate the process of obtaining data on the type of products and their characteristics.
Information is collected during the flight of the drone between the racks thanks to contactless reading of the digital code on the loads. To do this, RFID tags are used - these are miniature devices that are attached to each cargo and allow you to identify its name in accordance with the warehouse database.
Thanks to drones, the time for recalculating one pallet with cargo was reduced from 10 minutes to 1-2 seconds. Also, the use of unmanned vehicles made it possible to optimize routine operations and abandon the use of loading and unloading equipment during inventory.
We were able to confirm the stated hypothesis - the efficiency of the inventory process is increased due to the accuracy of the results obtained from drones. During the tests, it was revealed that with the help of drones it is possible not only to conduct an inventory of piece cargo, but also to carry out aerial photography to calculate the volume of inert materials, "said Ekaterina Cheban, head of programs for the development of innovations in logistics at Gazprom Neft. |
The project also confirmed the possibility of using unmanned aircraft to account for bulk materials. To do this, the data based on the results of filming from drones are summarized in a 3D model, on the basis of which the amount of resources and the occupied area for their storage are calculated.
In the future, Gazprom Neft plans to develop the practice of using RFID-tag technology in combination with drones and other digital tools to ensure full control over the movement of goods at all stages - from the moment of shipment from the plant to arrival at the warehouse and further transfer to the customer.[2]

Implementation of intelligent equipment monitoring system at filling stations
On December 4, 2019, Gazpromneft"" announced that it had combined the equipment of gas stations into a single intelligent system - the Infrastructure Monitoring Center (MCI).
Monitoring automation and predictive analytics of the MC allow you to track the state of equipment online and control the processes of operation of gas stations related to the safety and quality of fuel.
The software core of the monitoring center processes up to 100 thousand signals in one second and performs more than 50 thousand calculations. Information on monitoring petroleum product residues in continuous mode is received from each Gazpromneft network station connected to the MC. The collected data is transferred to the Neftekontrol-Gazprom Neft system online.
The machine learning and predictive analytics modules of the monitoring center read signals from connected devices at stations and notify in advance of the need for service maintenance of the gas station equipment. The implementation of the MC allows reducing the number of technological downtime by 30%, reducing the time for repair and service work by 21%, as well as maintaining the equipment of the gas station in operation 99% of the time, which ensures the uninterrupted operation of gas stations and contributes to improving the comfort of servicing customers of the Gazpromneft network.

Gazprom Neft approved a digital strategy until 2030. Key Programs and Indicators
In October 2019, Gazprom Neft presented a digital transformation strategy designed for a period until 2030. Its development has been carried out since the end of 2018, and it was approved in September 2019, the company said. Andrey Belevtsev, director of the company's digital transformation directorate, spoke about the key points of this document at Gazprom Neft's Innovation House in St. Petersburg.
Digital Transformation Goals and Objectives
The digital strategy is aimed at supporting Gazprom Neft's new business strategy, adopted in November 2018. The latter aims to build a "new generation" company, enter the top 10 largest public companies in the world for the extraction of liquid hydrocarbons, maximize the created cost of each barrel and achieve leadership in returning to invested capital.
For this, in addition to digital transformation, Gazprom Neft also plans to carry out the transformation of the organizational, cultural, operational and development of the partner ecosystem.
Andrei Belevtsev notes that digital technologies themselves are not something new for their company: the movement in their direction began 4-5 years ago, and as of October, the company is implementing about 500 digital projects. And the transformation is aimed, first of all, at increasing the efficiency of Gazprom Neft against the background of the growing situation of doing business and increasing uncertainty.
Recovery of oil is becoming more difficult as the most accessible reservoirs are gradually reduced. At the same time, the hydrocarbon market is highly volatile, and no one can predict oil prices until 2030, says Belevtsev. In such circumstances, it is important to be able to respond quickly and quickly make the right decisions.
In this regard, the main tasks of the digital transformation strategy are associated with an increase in the quality and speed of decision-making at Gazprom Neft, the flexibility of the product portfolio and the achievement of industry standards in priority areas, explained Andrei Belevtsev. To do this, the strategy involves the creation of a digital company managed on the basis of data and digital twins.
12 priority programs
The strategy involves the implementation of 12 priority priority programs covering all stages of the production chain - from exploration and production to logistics and sales:
- Digital transformation of exploration;
- Digital transformation of capital construction;
- Digital transformation of production management;
- Integrated planning and controlling
- Digital transformation of exploration and development;
- Digital production (refineries and industrial safety);
- Reliability management (refineries and industrial safety);
- Digital barrier management;
- Digital transformation of the financial and economic service;
- Digital model of the company;
- Digital transformation of human resources management;
- Unified legal environment.
The owner of each of the transformation programs is always a business, Belevtsev emphasized.
The company did not provide details on all programs, but gave examples of several of them. Thus, the digital transformation of geological exploration involves the transition to integrated project management, automation of routine operations, data collection and analytics systems, proactive field management based on digital twins and intelligent advisers. And the ultimate goal of this program is to reduce the duration of work by 30% and the cost of geological exploration by the same amount.
Another example is the digital transformation program for capital construction. The company is faced with the task of faster construction and faster payback of facilities. As a result of the implementation, it is planned to reduce the time for the implementation of projects by 40% and by 50% - the time for receiving the first oil.
The production program involves changing the approach to this process in the fields. In total, Gazprom Neft now has about 32 thousand wells in operation, and each of them has two key goals. The first is to give a 3% increase in production. The second is to reduce the cost of lifting the liquid by 5%.
Andrei Belevtsev noted that in order to get oil in modern conditions, it is necessary to drill a well, the depth of which to the formation with rocks containing oil can be up to 3 km. This is done almost blindly, according to a mathematical model. And the complexity of this process is growing.
Another example of the program is supply chain optimization. It is based on a new model of chain management through the Performance Management Center (EIC). The center itself has already been created and is working, it is located in Zoological Lane in St. Petersburg. Here, in real time, data from sensors and dozens of systems from all company assets included in the perimeter of the logistics, processing and sales unit of Gazprom Neft are monitored.
On the day of the presentation, visitors were not allowed to take pictures at the CUE, citing the fact that commercial information displayed on displays could get into the frame.
Almost every program takes into account cross-functional interaction in the company, and for many of them cross-functional control centers are created. In them, the task, on the one hand, is to collect people representing key functions, and on the other, these people must have data on what is happening on assets in order to make decisions in a mode close to real time. Therefore, along with programs, an important role is assigned to the creation of digital integration platforms that provide data collection, analytics, visualization and preparation for decision-making.
Digital Choice Principles
The key technological areas within the framework of Gazprom Neft's digital transformation are big data and artificial intelligence (AI), robotization, wearable devices and the Internet of Things, video analytics, unmanned aircraft, virtual and augmented reality, blockchain and others.
The Director of Digital Transformation emphasizes the special role of AI technologies: they reduce the volume of human cognitive errors and increase the efficiency and quality of decision-making.
Andrei Belevtsev notes that in cases where there are ready-made suitable solutions on the market, the company will use them, and not "reinvent the wheel." At the same time, vendors do not offer many of the solutions that Gazprom Neft requires in a ready-made form. In this case, the company is ready to develop them itself.
For example, the code of an oil rig simulator based on virtual reality technologies was written from scratch at Gazprom Neft, the company told TAdviser.
In general, developing your own advanced digital solutions that are not on the market is one of the principles of strategy. At the same time, Gazprom Neft is considering the option of not only using them for its own needs, but also offering successful own solutions on the open market. One example of such solutions is hydraulic fracturing software developed by Gazprom Neft together with a consortium of organizations.
Gazprom Neft also intends to create joint ventures with developers of IT solutions to jointly develop solutions for its own products. For example, in May, the company announced plans to create similar joint ventures with X Holding and Zyfra.
Belevtsev told TAdviser that as of October, preparatory procedures for the creation of these legal entities are being completed. At the same time, he says, work on the creation of joint solutions in fact is already underway. One of these solutions is the geologist's workplace, he gave an example of TAdviser. This development is carried out in conjunction with X Holding, in particular.
Investment and Economic Impact
According to Belevtsev, for the next five years, investments in digital transformation can account for up to 5% of the group's total investments. The planned volume of total investments for a five-year period at Gazprom Neft was difficult to promptly clarify TAdviser.
In October 2018, Aleksey Yankevich, deputy general director of the company for economics and finance of Gazprom Neft, spoke about plans for the group's total investments for the next 2-3 years in the amount of about 360-400 billion rubles a year. This means that in at least the next three years, the cost of digital transformation may amount to about 54-60 billion rubles.
Andrei Belevtsev told TAdviser that of the priority programs within the framework of digital transformation, the most expensive are those related to production and capital construction: this is due to the scale and number of facilities to which solutions need to be replicated.
Gazprom Neft expects that the amount of economic return from digital transformation after 2022 will be 3-5% EBITDA annually. In 2018, the company's EBITDA reached about 800 billion rubles.
We are engaged in digital transformation not because it is fashionable, but because a serious economic effect is at stake, "says Andrei Belevtsev. |
Implementation stages
Gazprom Neft explains that the strategy indicates general directions of movement and transformation parameters, and its plan will be detailed in stages, with tracking changes over short time intervals. The first stage of the strategy is designed for a period until 2021, when the company plans to evaluate the results and understand what needs to be adjusted for moving further.
A total of 4 iterations of this type are planned, taking into account the practical results of the previous stages and the current level of technology development. The final stage is designed for 2028-2030.
Announcement of the opening of the "Digital House" in St. Petersburg
On September 26, 2019, Gazprom Neft announced that in 2020 the Gazprom Neft Digital House, one of the largest technological spaces in the city, will open in St. Petersburg. It will employ development teams in artificial intelligence, robotics, unmanned aerial vehicles and industrial digital transformation.
According to the company, more than 300 programmers and engineers will be located on the island of New Holland after the restoration of building building No. 12. An important feature of the Digital Home will be the combination of a workspace and open public areas that everyone can visit. An exhibition platform will be organized for guests of the house, as well as a technological lecture hall for Gazprom Neft. In a special demo zone of the building, it will be possible to test the interfaces of the company's future digital services before their official launch.
The digital home will become part of Gazprom Neft's digital transformation ecosystem. It will unite competence centers from different industry areas (exploration, production, oil refining and sales). Their cross-functional interaction will speed up the replication of flagship digital projects across all the company's assets, as well as provide the next level of development of client services.
Nine specialized laboratories will be created for applied research and hypothesis testing. The work of each of them will be concentrated in the field of Industry 4.0 technologies: machine learning, video analytics, virtual and augmented reality, 3D printing, health monitoring devices and other end-to-end technologies.
The digital home will become another driver of our technological projects, along with the scientific and engineering centers of the company operating in St. Petersburg. told Andrey Belevtsev, Director of Digital Transformation at Gazprom Neft |
Gazprom Neft is ready to expand the use of drones in the Far North
On September 4, 2019, Gazprom Neft announced plans to increase the fleet of unmanned aircraft and the volume of drone work at the oil fields of the Far North by 2025.
The main function of Gazprom Neft drones is to quickly collect data on remote infrastructure facilities. With their help, 60% of the company's pipelines are monitored. In particular, unmanned aircraft raided the fields of the November region for 5 years with a length of more than 500 thousand kilometers.
Pilot projects using this technology at the construction control stage showed the possibility of optimizing 85% of the cost of inspection work. At the same time, the accuracy of measurement, tracking the pace of work and compliance with the schedule has doubled.
Also, unmanned aircraft were successfully used by the company for geophysical survey at the earliest stages of geological exploration. The technology was tested at the Novoportovskoye field, where drones were able to perform work 2 times cheaper than traditional methods of magnetometric surveying of territories using aircraft.
Together with other representatives of large industry, Gazprom Neft will work to further eliminate administrative barriers to the full use of the advantages of drones.
To do this, the company, together with the AERONET Association, will prepare proposals for simplified passage of procedures related to obtaining flight approvals, declassification of aerial photography materials and certification of devices.
For September 2019, excessive legislative requirements remain to declassify aerial photography materials after each flight. In addition, the deterrent is the long procedure for obtaining permission to use airspace, as well as issuing applications for flights.
According to Gazprom Neft experts, the transition to a simplified procedure for using unmanned aircraft of industrial companies will increase the volume of work using them by 5-10 times. This will be facilitated by the introduction of a notification, not a permit, procedure for coordinating drone flights and the exclusion of control views of aerial photography data by supervisory authorities. Planning of routes and organization of flights is supposed to be carried out in dynamic mode - without territorial restrictions, with the exception of the buffer zone adjacent to the control facilities.
Gazprom Neft expands environmental monitoring using drones
Gazpromneft-Khantos (a subsidiary of Gazprom Neft) launched in early 2019 an air monitoring system for oil pipelines and production infrastructure of an enterprise in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug.
Unmanned aircraft (BVS) monitors the condition of more than 250 km of oil pipelines at fields in Ugra. It monitors the integrity of highways and the situation at production facilities. This allows you to minimize environmental risks, as well as identify possible fires during the fire hazard period and control the flood situation in the spring. Modern technological equipment improves the safety of the company's infrastructure and significantly reduces the time to respond to emergency situations.

Gazprom Neft has created a digital integrated planning system
Gazprom Neft completed the summer of 2019 the first stage of creating digital tools for integrated scheduling of production and sale of oil refining products. The first digital system in Russia covers more than 60% of the assets of the value added chain. By 2021, all logistics, refining and sales assets of Gazprom Neft will be connected to this system, thanks to which the planning accuracy will increase to 97-98% - the best world indicators.
The digital integrated planning system created by Gazprom Neft specialists collects data on market needs and analyzes, taking into account the production capabilities of oil refining assets and logistics parameters. With the help of complex mathematical models of processes and technologies for processing "big data," the system monitors and processes more than 20 thousand parameters: technological modes and product quality indicators. The introduction of the digital system has already reduced planning time by more than 15 times. Integration with Neftekontrol - Gazprom Neft * allows obtaining timely and reliable data on the reserves and sales volumes of marketable products. Covering the entire production chain, the system forms an optimal plan for the production and distribution of petroleum products, both at the monthly and daily level.
"The optimal volume of oil refining and the most efficient basket of petroleum products, which are determined by our system based on market needs, logistical constraints and capabilities of all elements of the value chain, not only affect the growth of the company's operational efficiency. Creation of JV with IT companies
Gazprom Neft and ICS Holding have entered into a preliminary agreement on the creation of a joint venture, which will focus on creating digital products for the oil and gas industry and other industrial enterprises. The signing of the agreement took place on June 6, 2019 at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).
It is planned that Peter-Service, which has been operating on the market under the Nexign brand since 2018, will become a member of the joint venture on the part of ICS Holding. It, like Gazprom Neft, is based in St. Petersburg.
Director of Digital Transformation of Gazprom Neft Andrei Belevtsev told TAdviser that the target structure of the transaction is the ownership of the joint venture in equal shares. The deal is scheduled to close before the end of 2019.
Speaking about why Gazprom Neft needs such a joint venture, Andrei Belevtsev, in a conversation with TAdviser, noted that the company has a great need to sell digital products for its own business, and many companies in industry have the same need. Solving this problem, the company analyzed the market, studied the existing offers of suppliers, software developers, and came to the understanding that in many areas none of them can provide ready-made solutions, there are many "white spots" in the offer.
In order to create such solutions, you need, on the one hand, to have good competencies in product development, and on the other, to have deep knowledge of the technological process with which you are working. That is why a joint venture is a good form of cooperation for us. On our part, this is a demand for technologies, data, knowledge of production processes, and on the part of our partner, this is a good understanding of the specifics of software production. |
The joint venture plans to offer jointly developed solutions to the external market. Andrei Belevtsev believes that any internal solution is most often less high-quality than the product that wants to buy a wider range of customers. If there is a demand for a product on the market and customers vote for it with a ruble, the product becomes better from this.
Such products launched on the market are both a new business segment for us and an improvement in the quality of the solutions that we use for our own digital transformation. Thus, this is a double effect, - Belevtsev explained in a conversation with TAdviser. |
The demand for digital instruments in Gazprom Neft as a vertically integrated company is presented in various directions - from geology to various types of sales. From the point of view of sales, for example, these are trading platforms, new ways of selling and communicating with users. In the field of production, there is a demand for production management solutions, digital platforms for automation of production, and in geological exploration and production, there is a demand for geologists' jobs, construction automation, field management, etc., the director of digital transformation at Gazprom Neft cited TAdviser as examples.
According to Gazprom Neft's director of digital transformation, in addition to the oil and gas industry, the jointly developed solutions with Nexign are planned to be offered to companies in other industries where there is continuous production. This is petrochemistry, metallurgy, power, first of all. It is there that there are a lot of common tasks, Andrei Belevtsev explained in a conversation with TAdviser.
The target number of joint ventures with Nexign can reach 600 specialists in the field of IT and engineering, Gazprom Neft reported. Andrei Belevtsev told TAdviser that the bulk of the developers in it will be provided by Nexign, and from Gazprom Neft in the joint venture there will be business analysts, representatives of business customers - i.e., those who are able to skillfully set a task and have production expertise. Such joint teams should become "creators of new products," Belevtsev said.
According to TAdviser, Gazprom Neft tentatively plans to conclude a similar agreement on the creation of a joint venture for the joint development of digital solutions with the Zyfra Company, which specializes in creating technologies for the digitalization of industry, invests in products and develops the environment of the industrial Internet of Things and artificial intelligence. The key industries for it are mechanical engineering, metallurgy, mining, the oil and gas sector and the chemical industry.
Andrei Belevtsev told TAdviser that the target structure of the transaction in this case is the same as with Nexign. With Zyfra, it is planned to focus on the development of digital production management platforms.

Development of digital models of deposits based on AI with Skoltech
On February 12, 2019, Gazprom Neft reported that experts from the Gazprom Neft Scientific and Technical Center and scientists from Skoltech launched the next stage of a joint project to create digital geological and hydrodynamic models based on artificial intelligence technologies. Experts plan to use machine learning methods for digital modeling of reservoir currents. Development will significantly increase the efficiency and efficiency of making capital-intensive decisions on the development of hydrocarbon fields.
Skoltech specialists in the scientific groups of professors Dmitry Koroteev, Evgeny Burnaev and Ivan Oseledets prepared scientific and technical developments. In particular, metamodeling algorithms have been created that demonstrate acceleration of several hundred times compared to classical hydrodynamic modeling of oil and gas reservoirs.
Experts of the Scientific and Technical Center of Gazprom Neft positively assessed the prospects for introducing these innovations of Skoltech. During the year, oil workers, together with scientists, will work on the creation of the final product for its implementation at the company's fields.
author '= Mars Hasanov, General Director of Gazprom Neft Scientific and Technical Center ' Skoltech has been one of the scientific partners of the Gazprom Neft Scientific and Technical Center for several years. Together we are implementing complex projects in the fields of geology, ultra-hard materials design, machine learning technologies and digital modeling. And each time our partner confirmed his status as an innovative platform capable of coping with any technological challenge. We expect that the implementation of the project will significantly increase the information content of modeling processes that occur in the formation. This will increase the quality of decisions made, and the use of machine learning methods will reduce the time for analyzing the data obtained. |
The metamodeling project is an excellent example of the use of machine learning technologies to significantly accelerate the prediction of the dynamics of hydrocarbon deposits. This is one of the landmark examples in which the fundamental problems of oil and gas engineering are solved using the most recent developments from the field of artificial intelligence. |
The power of the Russian Federation presented the program of digital transformation of Gazprom Neft
In February 2019, Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak visited Gazprom Neft's new Innovation House and digital project and performance management centers in St. Petersburg. During the visit, the chairman of the board of Gazprom Neft, Alexander Dyukov, told the minister about the drastic changes in the company's business models and processes based on digital data and technologies.
Gazprom Neft's digital ecosystem brings together leading specialists in neural networks and artificial intelligence, digital platforms, blockchain technologies, augmented and virtual realities, robotization and other technologies of Industry 4.0. Specialists work in different divisions of the company (exploration, production, oil refining and sales) and ensure their cross-functional interaction.
The company has launched a comprehensive digital transformation program for its business since 2018. New technologies and management methods, in particular, will optimize the timing of large oil and gas production projects. Gazprom Neft also plans to halve the period for receiving the first oil from fields within a few years. The active development of digital tools for integrated management of the product value chain continues: from refineries to sales facilities.
"We got acquainted with how digital technologies are being introduced in practice to implement business processes along the entire chain - from geological exploration to the sale of fuel at gas stations. Such technologies allow you to reduce the cost, make effective management decisions. It is important that such technologies are introduced not only in the oil industry, but also in the electric power industry, thermal power, coal mining, including to maintain competitiveness in world markets, "Alexander Novak emphasized.
Gazprom Neft specialists presented to the minister already implemented projects using technologies such as the industrial Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, machine learning and other innovative solutions. In particular, cognitive systems allow you to reduce the time to assess potential drilling locations from several weeks to 15 minutes. And the control of the quantity and quality of petroleum products at all stages of their creation and transportation from the plant to the gas tank is carried out thanks to the operation of the Neftekontrol digital system. This guarantees the safety of product volumes and their quality.

How Data Science and machine learning help produce oil. Gazprom Neft Experience
Gazprom Neft widely uses Data Science and machine learning in its various processes - from seismic to refining, and plans to expand these practices. Roman Khudorozhkov, head of Gazprom Neft's advanced analytics and machine learning programs, spoke about how the company does this in October 2018.
He noted that it is not as easy to extract oil from underground as many imagine. At great depths - 2-3 km underground, for example, lie three huge stones one above the other. And one of them has oil. It remains to understand in what kind of stone it is, and how to get it from there, says Khudorozhkov. Oil usually occurs in rock pores, such as sandstone. Several wells are drilled for production, some of which are injectors injecting water into sandstone and some of which are producers.
The further the production goes, the more difficult it becomes. The deposits are deeper, and the rocks in which they are located are thinner, explains the representative of Gazprom Neft. To increase production, a popular hydraulic fracturing method is used. It involves fracturing rocks with explosions and injecting fluid into them to release oil deposits.
No one has seen these formations and does not know how much oil is in them. To predict this, it is necessary to build very thin models that take into account many factors, including the features of the wells located next to the one in which the explosion is to be performed. This is computed by solving systems of differential equations.
One of the tasks is to determine the radial mode of operation of the well, at which the pressure in the well stops growing at a certain stage. At the stage of pressure increase in the well, one set of equations is used, and after it ceases to grow, another set of equations is used, explains the representative of Gazprom Neft. It is important to pinpoint the point at which you want to switch to another system of equations.
To do this, Gazprom Neft has a system of neural networks that allow this mode to be detected. After detection, a system of equations is used, which is still solved by standard methods, but in six months this part is planned to be replaced by a neural network.
The problem with solving equations is that this process can be delayed for a long time, up to months, and requires powerful computers, says Roman Khudorozhkov. In some places this is replaced by neural networks, due to which Gazprom Neft turns settlement weeks into hours, or even minutes, says Roman Khudorozhkov.
The representative of Gazprom Neft calls the construction of the Cognitive Geologist the main goal in the field of machine learning in the company. This project involves the creation of a self-learning model of a geological object, which will mathematically process the initial information and give the final result, assess the probability of correct answers and make recommendations on the need for additional research to increase confidence in success.
A typical task of geological exploration and development takes from 6 months to 2 years in one area, the Khudorozhkov data cited. And there are dozens of such sites. The task is to reduce the time to 3 minutes. It is planned to solve it within 3-5 years.
Neural networks are also used in Gazprom Neft for marking where which layers are located and at what angles. To do this, the seismic engineer places several sections, and the neural network itself completes what is happening on the site. This, according to Roman Khudorozhkov, accelerates work from months to days.
The company also uses a digital twin of the installation of an oil processing plant. It is necessary to optimize the installation in such a way as to make the required amount of products with minimal power consumption. For this, Gazprom Neft also uses neural networks and machine learning models. At the same time, there are many such plants in each plant, and the goal is to optimize the entire plant.
Gazprom Neft purposefully did not collect all Data Science specialists in one division in order to speed up the work of such specialists with customers and provide a quick way to obtain data, Khudorozhkov added. Therefore, in different parts of the company there are different groups of Data Scientists working on a variety of tasks. The company has developed a single standard of machine learning models to ensure that all of these groups work uniformly.
Gazprom Neft has accumulated 6 petabytes of data and figured out how to monetize them
As of 2018, Gazprom Neft data centers have accumulated "huge amounts of information" - about 6 thousand. TB (6 PB). This is stated in the annual report of the company, published in June 2018. There, the company notes that it is successfully exploring the possibilities of monetizing this data.
In particular, in production, certain components of Big Data technologies have been tested or are already being used to solve business problems for predicting the effectiveness of complex geological and technical measures, well clustering, automation of interpretation of seismic research results, the report says.
In turn, the Gazprom Neft Logistics, Refining and Sales Unit has created an Efficiency Management Center, whose task is to manage the entire block's value chain, from oil supplies to refineries to sales of petroleum products. Working with big data is one of the tools in the arsenal of specialists from this center.
Earlier, in 2017, on the basis of the IT subsidiary of Gazprom Neft - ITSK, a Data Monetization Center was created to meet the company's needs in reviewing the use of big data and machine learning technologies to optimize business processes in key activities.
He brought together experts in the field of Data science and Data engineering, who take part in specialized projects as consultants and developers of predictive models and machine algorithms.
Implementing projects based on Big Data technologies, Gazprom Neft cooperates with leading Russian scientific institutes and with global IT suppliers, the company said earlier. So, together with IBM, Gazprom Neft is developing algorithms to automate the process of choosing the optimal system for the development of newly commissioned fields and optimizing the operating modes of wells in long-term developed fields to maximize production.
The effect of the introduction of this technology in the company is estimated at 1 million tons of potential additional production[5].
Poseidon Program: Digital Projects for Gazprom Neft Offshore Production
Gazprom Neft is implementing the Poseidon program aimed at improving the efficiency of offshore projects through the use of modern digital technologies[6]
Although digitalization is the current trend for the entire oil industry today, offshore assets, perhaps, need it especially badly. The remoteness of the fields from the mainland, the high cost of development and operation, special requirements for labor protection and the environment, increasingly complex and technological wells do not leave the right to error, require maximum efficiency in the organization of work and prompt decision-making. Gazprom Neft combines digital projects for offshore production into the Poseidon program. Already today they are transforming the work of the Prirazlomnaya oil production platform on the shelf of the Pechora Sea.
All elements of the system being built will be linked together by the Production Optimization Center (DPC). This is a platform for the work of a multidisciplinary team of specialists, an organizational center, where all the information necessary to make balanced management decisions flows. The Emergency Management Center will also be located here. In normal mode, the exercise will be guided from here, and in the event of a real incident, the work of the emergency committee will be organized here as soon as possible.
Since the data center is a unifying element, its full operation can begin only when the rest of the program projects are implemented. Today, the most developed of them is "Integrated Modeling." We are talking about creating a model of the entire production chain of an oil production asset, which includes a formation, wells, a system for collecting and treating oil. The model allows you to analyze the work of each of these elements - not in isolation, but in interaction with everyone else. In fact, this is a digital twin of the Prirazlomnoye field - a design tool that makes it possible to make forecasts of production indicators, monitor equipment operation, find bottlenecks, and lose possible optimization scenarios. It is already used to configure the technological modes of operation of the platform equipment. The integrated model is constantly updated and supplemented, which allows you to make more accurate decisions.
Another project, the work on which should be completed by the end of 2018, is the creation of a real-time database. She will be responsible for collecting, storing and visualizing data from all sensors and control systems in the most usable format and should facilitate access to this data for all specialists, regardless of their location. When working together, they will see the same schemes, the same parameters, and without temporary delays. As a result, a large number of actions related to clarifying the current situation, exchanging data manually will become unnecessary and will free up time for employees to solve other production tasks.
The implementation of the Poseidon program will require strengthening the data transmission channels coming from the platform via satellite - the optimal communication center in the Pechora Sea. To this end, the existing satellite communication channel will be expanded.
Projects included in the Poseidon program form a single life cycle for working with data from their collection and transfer to management decisions. For specialists to have reliable information in a convenient format, you need a database. For the same information to be available simultaneously at different locations, a reliable high-throughput data link is needed. In order to use the data correctly, an integrated production model is required, on which you can test various scenarios. The implementation of the program will improve the quality and efficiency of management decisions, ensure cross-functional interaction of specialists in real time and, as a result, increase production efficiency.
Gazprom Neft and IBM expand joint work on digital projects
Gazprom Neft and IBM agreed to expand cooperation in new technological projects for oil production during the development of fields on land. One of the possible areas may be work on the methodology for introducing the Digital Laboratory at Gazprom Neft. On the basis of the Digital Laboratory, new technologies will be tested to improve the efficiency of geological exploration and drilling (software products based on artificial intelligence, predictive analytics, Big Data, industrial Internet of Things, etc.).
Gazprom Neft and IBM have already developed a joint program for digital control of oil production processes during onshore field development. Several projects are underway in the field of automated analysis of the geoinformation system, study of geology and prediction of complications during drilling.
