2018: Creation of fund
On September 13, 2018 Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon and the richest person in the world, announced creation of charitable foundation. The initiative under the name Bezos Day One Fund is intended for financing of the non-profit organizations helping the homeless and also for foundation of preparatory preschool institutions for children from families with low income. Bezos explained that he is ready to invest in new fund about $2 billion for a start.
In 2017 Bezos asked on the Twitter blog for what purposes it is necessary to allocate charitable funds. The billionaire already financed researches of cancer and support system of immigrants and also made investments in rocket company Blue Origin which he described as "investment into the future of our planet due to development of fundamental space infrastructure".
Within new fund Bezos will support the organizations providing a roof and livelihood to poor families. Also the fund is going to organize network of educational institutions for preschool children from needy families in areas where children are deprived of an opportunity "study, invent and improve".
Bezos noted, as will follow in this case the principles which resulted Amazon in success – i.e. always to be customer oriented. In this case the child will become the client. Bezos considers that it is extremely difficult to make up for the development missed in early years, and intends to help to get to children from needy families an education which all are worthy. In that case return will exceed much more expenses.
Jeff Bezos was often criticized for the fact that he at the level of prosperity spends for charity too little. Bloomberg estimates Bezos's fortune in $164 billion (for September 13, 2018) whereas the status of Bill Gates holding the second place of rating of the richest people of the world makes $98.6 billion Gates transferred for all the time for charity more than $40 billion.
In September, 2018 one of senators offered the bill under the name Stop BEZOS which would force large corporations to raise the salary or to make investments in programs of a government assistance. Amazon answered that statements of senator for the company were "inaccurate and misleading".[1]
