In 2024, support for one of the most popular Linux-based server operating systems, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7, will end. At the same time, Red Hat stopped supporting customers in Russia back in 2022. Russian business needs an alternative that can replace the RHEL line of OS derivatives while maintaining performance and supporting current software. The Inferit OS team was faced with the task of providing users with an alternative to foreign operating systems of the Enterprise Linux level, compatible with existing corporate services and applications, and ensuring the simplest possible migration to it.

2023: Softline Computer OS Development

On May 18, 2023, it became known that Softline Group of Companies, a provider of solutions and services in the field of digital transformation and information security, is working on its own operating system. It is planned to use it on desktops and laptops.

According to the Kommersant newspaper, the created software platform will be based on technologies purchased in 2021 from the National Support and Development Center (NCPR). The latter develops the MSVSFERA product family (Armed Forces Mobile System) with open source on the Linux kernel.

Softline develops its own OS for computers

The project to create its own, OS according to market participants, may be explained by Softline's desire to increase the volume of product supplies in the interests of state customers. Until 2022, Softline was one of the largest distributors Microsoft in Russia, but in the current geopolitical situation it was forced to revise the business model. In particular, the company reoriented itself to domestic technologies.

Kommersant, referring to information received from persons familiar with the project, notes that Softline will be able to install its OS on computers for state customers and commercial structures. However, MSVSFERA is far from a new product, and therefore it may take several years to refine it for the needs of the Russian market. At the same time, more than sixty operating systems with developed functions are listed in the Register of Russian software. In the public sector, for example, RED OS and Astra Linux platforms are in demand, which are certified by the Federal Service for Technical and Export Control (FSTEC). Therefore, "even if Softline has its own hardware, it will take a lot of effort to achieve a significant role in the Russian market," experts say.[1]
