The Russian market for repair of components for servers and DSS has grown 5 times
In 2023, the volume of the Russian market for repair of components for servers and storage systems (DSS) increased fivefold compared to the previous year. This is due to the formed geopolitical situation, which provoked the departure of foreign suppliers from the Russian Federation and, as a result, a shortage of equipment. This was announced on February 13, 2024 by industry participants. Read more here.
71% of Russian companies consider domestic DSS to replace Western
Experts K2 Tech conducted a study of the current situation in the storage system (storage) market. The company announced this on July 31, 2023. According to its results, it turned out that enterprise-segment companies are showing interest in Asian solutions, but prefer DSS from Russian manufacturers for implementation. 10% of respondents noted that they have already begun to scale their infrastructure using domestic solutions.
In the survey conducted by K2Tekh, 131 representatives of enterprise-segment companies from 18 industry economies of the Russian Federation took part. His goal was to find out what strategies Russian companies adhere to and in favor of which decisions they make their choice: Russian, Asian or Western.
A market study showed that 74% of companies are aimed at both replacing and expanding the fleet of existing DSS to the increase in the volume of stored data. Therefore, companies are actively considering all options available on the market. At the same time, 16% said that at this stage they are not ready to abandon the solutions on which they have historically built their IT infrastructure. Among the main vendors of the DSS, respondents named Dell EMC, IBM, HPE, NetApp, Huawei and Hitachi. They noted that they do not plan migration until the end of their service life, and therefore use service support services through IT partners or are looking for ways to purchase spare parts on their own. 10% of companies as of July 2023 are already scaling their IT infrastructure on hardware and software solutions available on the Russian market.
In the question of acceptable alternatives to existing DSS, respondents were given the opportunity to choose several options for answering. As a result, 71% replied that they were considering the DSS of Russian vendors, including those included in the Unified Register of Russian Electronic Products. 61% are ready to resort to parallel imports in order to be able to both exploit familiar solutions and continue to purchase new models. And 58% are interested in the offers of Asian vendors. Exclusively Russian DSS are considered by 19% of companies, foreign (through parallel imports) - 13%. At the same time, 16% of companies find it difficult to choose between domestic and Asian DSS.
We are closely monitoring changes in the IT market, and the results of the study only confirm our observations. The legislative initiative on import substitution of foreign components at all KII facilities stimulated an increase in demand for Russian solutions. As a result, customers began to impose higher requirements on domestic manufacturers. All these factors together positively influenced both the functional development of Russian DSS and the level of trust in them in the market, "commented Alexey Zotov, Head of IT Infrastructure at K2Tekh. |
At the same time, according to him, the technological level of Asian storage systems for July 2023 is higher than domestic DSS. However, companies are in no hurry to move from the stages of testing and piloting solutions to real implementations.
Firstly, this is due to the fact that the DSS of Asian manufacturers are not included in the Unified Register of Russian Radio-Electronic Products, which means they do not fully comply with the requirements of the regulator. Therefore, for the most part, companies that do not have critical elements in the infrastructure show interest in them. Secondly, Asian DSS are relatively new solutions for the Russian market that do not have reference implementations with fixed performance indicators on the domestic IT landscape. And we see that customers want to get the most information about these solutions to make sure they are reliable, "added Alexey Zotov. |
The DSS needs of Russian companies. Results of the study
On June 5, 2023, Aerodisk shared with TAdviser the results of a study conducted among Russian enterprises to study their needs for data storage systems and their functional characteristics. The data obtained made it possible to understand the picture of typical operating scenarios of systems, as well as to identify what functionality enterprises lack.
The company's analysts investigated the patterns of operation of systems data storage in different, industries economies preferences for the functionality of systems, the desired directions for their improvement and development, as well as a number of other aspects that help to form an idea of the role of DSS in the IT landscapes of domestic business.
The results of the survey, which covered 250 state and commercial enterprises, revealed the top 5 tasks that enterprises solve with the help of the DSS[1]
- 16% of respondent companies use them for virtualization;
- as an element of corporate infrastructure - 15%;
- for storage deployment file - also 15%;
- high-load DBMS launches 11% of companies;
- business systems (/ ERP/etc.) CRMBI - 9.5%.
Other scenarios include VDI, video surveillance, email, test environment creation, and cloud infrastructure deployment.
43% of companies use from one to five DSS, in the range from 6 to 10 systems, another 20% of respondents close their needs. From 11 to 30 systems, 18% of companies are enough, then up to a hundred DSS are used by another 7.3%, and over a hundred - 8% of companies. The rest of the survey participants do not have installed DSS.
At the same time, mid-range DSS are the most popular option - 50% of companies use it. The basic or initial level (low-end) is the choice of 31.5% of respondents, the top level of solutions (high-end) is used by 18% of companies.
Only 6.8% of respondents purchase additional DSS capacity more often than once a year. Every year, such an upgrade is carried out by 25% companies, every two years - 15% respondents, every 3 years - 20.6%, less often 1 times 3 years - 32.3%.
Extremely interesting results were obtained regarding the technical support services of DSS vendors. So, 28% of companies admitted that they do not use the services of official support at all. There are several possible explanations: for example, DSS work smoothly and are quite clearly managed, so that external help is not needed for full-time IT specialists of user companies. Another option - within the framework of a given operating scenario, so far there was no need for help, nothing broke, there was no need to "climb under the hood" for adjustment. But on the market, situations are also possible when the quality of support during the initial appeal turned out to be unsatisfactory, so they decided to continue to act themselves, - Vyacheslav Volodkovich, General Director of Aerodisk, comments on the study. |
According to him, studying the consumption structure of DSS Russian developers in the domestic market also made it possible to identify top requests for expanding the capabilities of systems or expanding those functions of DSS that are in their infancy by June 2023. These include user requests for DSS capabilities such as deduplication, online volume migration, data compression, single DSS fleet management console, and high-end functionality - multi-controller (using more than two DSS controllers) in active/active mode.
2022
30-50% market drop
According to the results of January-November 2022, sales of data storage systems (DSS) decreased by 30-50% compared to the same period in 2021. This is evidenced by the data of the company F + tech, which were released in December 2022.
The need for DSS, taking into account the increase in the volume of processed and stored data, is constantly growing, but due to sanctions and geopolitical factors, demand cannot be met, which caused an unprecedented drop in sales, the study says, an excerpt from which is quoted by Kommersant. |
According to the forecasts of the newspaper's source in the electronics market, in 2022 the volume of the Russian DSS market will amount to $320-450 million (19-28 billion rubles). More precisely, it is difficult to estimate the volume of sales and the share of brands, including due to parallel imports, the source said.
Maxim Koposov, director of Promobit (a manufacturer of servers and DSS), confirmed that DSS sales decreased due to a drop in the supply of foreign solutions. According to him, with parallel imports, such equipment is sold at an inflated price. Kolosov believes that business is not yet ready to completely switch to less familiar Russian and Chinese equipment, and sometimes it does not meet technical requirements.
The commercial director of Aerodisk Timur Mustafayev confirmed that most customers could not adjust to the new realities, when suppliers began to demand prepayment and raised prices two to five times.
According to Maxim Koposov's forecasts, in 2023-2024 the volume of DSS sales in Russia will recover, since the need for data storage for business will exceed the available capacity reserves, and Russian manufacturers will increase supplies. In addition, an active transition to software-defined DSS expected.[2]
Price increase by 30-50%
In September 2022, the cost of domestic servers and data storage systems (DSS) in Russia increased by 30-50% compared to 8 months ago - before the start of the Russian military special operation in Ukraine. At the same time, the delivery time of equipment from large manufacturers has greatly increased and reaches several months. Vedomosti wrote about this on September 26, 2022, citing Dmitry Isaev, director of Softline's cloud solutions department. Read more here.

Sales of external DSS amounted to $564.3 million - IDC
Sales of external storage systems in Russia at the end of 2020 amounted to $564.3 million, according to the research company IDC. According to experts, the market showed "neutral dynamics." Which one is not specified.
At the same time, in the study for 2019, the volume of Russian external DSS was estimated at $508.09 million following the results of this 12-month period. If we take this figure into account, it turns out that in 2020 DSS sales still increased significantly - by about 11%. Most likely, analysts adjusted the 2019 estimate.
The manager of the corporate systems market research program at IDC in Russia and SNGMikhail Lebedev says that the main drivers of the growth of the Russian DSS market remain the supply of equipment to large companies and participants in the e-commerce market. Customers continue to invest in infrastructure to support digital transformation programs and the functioning of new services, he said.
Given the complex macroeconomic situation and focusing on accounting for the cost of ownership when deciding on investments in high-performance infrastructure, business is focusing on scalable solutions and, in particular, on hyper-converged systems that have shown growth throughout 2020. We assume that the market will continue to invest in flash storage systems, "said Lebedev, quoted by the IDC press service. |
The leaders of the Russian market for external DSS at the end of 2020 are not named in the study. Only data for the fourth quarter are given: according to the results of this period, the following companies took the first places:
- Yadro (share in monetary terms - 22.5%);

According to the results of the quarter, the leaders in the Russian market of external storage systems are Yadro and Huawei, with shares of 18.6% and 18.4%, in monetary terms. Yadro also took the leading place in the volume of delivered DSS with a share of 64.7%. The top five also included HPE, Hitachi, NetApp.
It is noteworthy that, according to the results of the study, the storage system market showed significant growth in both capacitive and monetary terms. Middle-class systems form the basis of the market with a 53.4% share in monetary terms. Despite the fact that HDD-based DSS continue to occupy the main share in capacitive terms, flash-based systems showed a steady growth of 60.2% in monetary terms, with a share of 38.5%.
Despite the negative external background, the storage market continues to grow. We see stable demand from the corporate segment. HDD-based systems still dominate the market, addressing regulatory requirements. At the same time, the share of flash-based storage systems showed a significant increase, which indicates the demand for high-performance systems. Growth drivers are the financial and telecommunications sectors. Despite the fact that mid-range systems continue to be the main platform, the growth was shown by the segment of corporate-level systems, increasing its share to 35.9% in monetary terms, "said Mikhail Lebedev, manager of the IDC corporate systems market research program in Russia and the CIS. |

The volume of the Russian market for external storage systems in 2019 amounted to $508.09 million, which is 20.8% more than a year earlier. This is evidenced by data from IDC analysts.
According to them, storage sales continue to grow, including due to stable demand in the corporate sector. Infrastructure upgrades lead to increased capacity for customers in almost all industries, and the main growth drivers are companies representing sectors such as finance and telecommunications.
As for 2019 as a whole, the DSS market continued to grow due to infrastructure investments from the corporate sector, - said the manager of the corporate systems market research program at IDC in Russia and SNGMikhail Lebedev, whose words are quoted in a press release. |
According to the expert, systems based on hard drives continue to dominate the market, meeting regulatory requirements. At the same time, the share of flash storage showed a significant increase, which indicates the demand for high-performance systems, he added.
The share of DSS based on solid-state drives in the Russian market reached 38.1%. Despite the fact that mid-range systems continue to be the main platform with a 64% share, the growth was shown by the segment of corporate-level systems, increasing the share to 25% in monetary terms.
Analysts named the following companies as the leaders in the Russian storage market:
- Huawei (share in monetary terms - 26.2%);
- Yadro (22,2%);
- HPE (12,2%) ;

2018: List of DSS manufacturers for the implementation of the "Spring Law"
In July 2018, a list of Russian manufacturers of data storage systems (DSS) prepared by the Ministry of Industry and Trade was published, whose products can be used by telecom operators to comply with the "Spring Law." The document in response to an appeal to the department was received by the head of the consulting company Orderkom Dmitry Galushko.
By July 20, 2018, domestic DSS manufacturers for execution by telecom operators of the "Spring Law " are as follows:
- Kraftway;
- Yadro (part of the National Computer Corporation, NCC);
- INEUM named after Brook;
- MCST (developer of the Elbrus processor);
- T-Platforms;
- National Center for Informatization (NCI);
- National Technologies (controlled by Rostec).
In addition, integrated systems of operational-search measures (SORM; in addition to DSS, they include an automated workplace for an operational employee and information collection equipment) supply "Special Technologies," "MFI Soft," "Norsi-Trans," "Citadel," etc.
According to Kommersant, the Spring Law entered into force on July 1, 2018, but some by-laws have not yet been adopted on July 20. In particular, the Ministry of Telecom and Mass Communications did not submit changes to the rules for storing voice information. It is assumed that this document should indicate "the priority of Russian equipment manufacturers is spelled out."
However, the operators did not wait for the authorities and began to purchase components. Thus, the first significant batch of DSS already been shipped under a contract to MegaFon, NCC President Alexander Kalinin told the publication.
Dmitry Galushko believes that the capacity of Russian manufacturers is not enough to implement the "Spring Law." In addition, according to him, after the adoption of certification rules, the equipment will have to be tested. For example, in the case of the 2014 SORM order, two years and four months passed from the date of its publication to the issuance of the first certificates.[4]
2017
1st half: 230 PB (-23%) for $126.8 million (-32%)
On September 29, 2017, IDC analysts published some results of a study of the Russian storage system DSS. Sales of this equipment in the first half of the year decreased by a third, despite the rapid growth of the flash array segment.
According to experts, in January-June 2017, DSS with a total capacity of 230.2 PB were delivered to the Russian market, which is almost 23% less than in the same period of the previous year. The total revenue of manufacturers from the implementation of such solutions decreased by 32.4%, amounting to $126.8 million.
The decline was caused by a drop in demand for traditional disk storage, while shipments of systems built exclusively on flash memory arrays without the use of rotating hard drives jumped 86.5% in monetary terms in the first half of 2017 and reached 23.7% of the total.
According to IDC analyst Mikhail Popov, flash arrays offer valuable advantages to any customer, so the number of specification requests is growing for all manufacturers.
It will not be a mistake to expect the emergence of new manufacturers of flash solutions, a decrease in the average cost of such systems and a further increase in their market share in quantitative and capacitive terms, says Popov. - On the other hand, economic realities and limited component availability will help accelerate the growth of the hybrid storage market, combining the impressive speed capabilities of flash arrays with the availability and capacity of traditional hard drives. |
From the IDC report, it also follows that in the first half of 2017, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (23.3%) earned the most on server supplies to the Russian Federation, and Hitachi Data Systems (28.6%) supplied the most equipment in terms of total capacity.
The maximum growth in supplies in monetary terms was shown by Huawei with an increase of 242.4%. The same company became the leader in the growth of the total capacity of delivered DSS - by 45.8%.
2016
663 thousand TB (+ 36%) for $382.77 million (+ 0.5 %)
On March 23, 2017, IDC analysts released a research report on the Russian storage system DSS. Its volume in terms of storage capacity increased by more than a third, but there was almost no growth in the money.
According to experts, in 2016, external disk storage with a total capacity of 663,002 terabytes was delivered to Russia, which is 35.7% more than in 2015. In money, the market rose 0.5% to $382.77 million.
This dynamics in IDC is associated with a decrease in the average cost of a terabyte and changed preferences of customers who chose equipment of the middle price segment much more often than cheaper and expensive solutions.
According to the results of 2016, Dell Technologies, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), Hitachi Data Systems, IBM and NetApp were named the largest manufacturers of external DSS supplied to the Russian market. Many vendors showed modest dynamics, and only Oracle and Huawei saw double-digit growth.
Market shares of vendors for 2016 are not named. The report only highlights Dell's 38 percent lead for the fourth quarter.
The increase in data did not save customers on storage capacity. Despite the still difficult economic conditions, customers have demonstrated their commitment to traditional procurement tactics, pushing back large purchases to the end of the year, "said Mikhail Popov, IDC senior analyst for corporate systems. |
According to him, the preferences of DSS buyers and the range of manufacturers of this equipment are changing due to the development of such areas as storage software, cloud storage, flash-based systems and converged systems.
Q2: EMC Leads
On October 3, 2016, the analytical company IDC presented an updated study by EMEA Quarterly Enterprise Storage Systems Tracker, which, among other things, reflects the state of affairs in the Russian storage system DSS. In their report, the experts noted that EMC leads not only in revenue, but also in the capacity of manufactured equipment.
According to IDC data for the second quarter of 2016, external DSS systems totaling 154.4 PB were delivered to Russia, which is 60% more than a year earlier. In money, the market grew over this period by 23.2% to $98.45 million.
After a relative decline in the supply of systems of the middle price segment in the first quarter of this year against the background of a moderate increase in the supply of systems of the higher price segment, customers returned to conservative consumption, "says Mikhail Popov, IDC senior analyst for corporate systems. - We can note the drop in demand for systems with maximum performance and high price in the second quarter and the return of demand for systems of the middle price segment. |
According to Popov, in the first quarter of 2016, the segment of hybrid systems turned out to be more traditional solutions in terms of cost, and in the second quarter this trend intensified.
The IDC analytical summary also reports that the largest manufacturers of storage systems in the Russian market in April-June 2016 were EMC,, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, and Hitachi Data Systems, IBM NetApp which accounted for more than 90% of deliveries in monetary terms.
EMC has also regained the lead in total shipped capacity, thanks to a 121 percent growth rate. The company also ranked first in terms of revenue growth in the market (by almost 45%).
Putin instructed ministers to work out the issue of releasing Russian software and data storage equipment
Signed by the President of the Russian Federation on July 7, 2016, the law obliges telecom operators and Internet companies to keep the content of calls and user correspondence for six months from July 1, 2018 so that law enforcement agencies can access them. The law will force operators and Internet companies to significantly increase the capacity of their data centers. Simultaneously with the law, Vladimir Putin signed an order from the government to work out the issue of producing information storage equipment and software in Russia (more).
Q1
On June 30, 2015, analysts at International Data Corporation (IDC) presented the results of a study of the Russian external storage (DSS) market. In the first quarter, deliveries of these devices in terms of total capacity almost doubled, and Hitachi Data Systems became the leader in this indicator.
According to IDC EMEA Quarterly Enterprise Storage Systems Tracker, in January-March 2016, the volume of the Russian external disk storage market reached $90 million, an increase of 7.1% compared to the same period last year. The total capacity of the shipped equipment during this time increased by 89.6%, amounting to 141.2 petabytes.
After the impressive results of the last quarter of 2015, storage supplies were expected to decrease significantly, "says Mikhail Popov, IDC senior analyst for corporate systems. - Despite the seasonal decline in sales, the market continued to be inexorably affected by the factors of increasing the amount of accumulated data and reducing the cost of flash and hybrid systems. We anticipate that moderate growth in storage investment will continue into the next quarter, however, on the other hand, the market is currently somewhat stalled in anticipation of legislative initiatives that could radically affect the need for storage capacity and even create unprecedented excitement in some industries. |
The largest manufacturers of storage systems in the Russian market are the companies, EMC,, and IBM Hitachi Data Systems, Hewlett Packard Enterprise NetApp which took more than 87% of sales in monetary terms in the first three months of 2016. Analysts have identified a company that for the Hitachi Data Systems first time in three years managed to break into the lead in terms of the total capacity of delivered disk storage.
2015
The worst results of the year in 5 years: 480,000 TB for $380.9 million.
On April 4, 2015, the analytical company IDC published the results of a study of the Russian external storage (DSS) market, which showed the worst results in the previous five years.
According to experts, in 2015, deliveries of external disk storage to Russia amounted to 480,539 TB in capacitive terms, which is 1.6% more than a year earlier. In money, the market fell by almost a third to $380.9 million.
This dynamics is due to a decrease in the average cost of a terabyte and the growing popularity of equipment in the middle price category.
At the beginning of 2015, the Russian external DSS market experienced a drop in supplies, then it began to demonstrate a quarterly increase in the total volume of storage systems produced.
In general, the results of the year allow us to talk about 2015 as the worst year in the Russian market for external storage systems over the past 5 years. The general economic situation significantly influenced the development of the market and forced customers to invest more modestly in the storage infrastructure, - said Mikhail Popov, senior analyst at IDC for corporate systems. |
According to him, the demand for new DSS greatly hampered by the virtualization of disk storage and systems with support for deduplication and compression algorithms "on the fly," which can improve the efficiency of using deployed infrastructure solutions. However, the volume of data is growing, therefore, in capacitive terms, the market for external DSS will increase, Popov said.
According to the results of 2015, the group of the largest suppliers of external storage systems on the Russian market is as follows: EMC, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, IBM, Hitachi Data Systems and NetApp. All of these companies ended the year with a tangible drop in hardware revenues, and only Dell and Hitachi Data Systems had a reduction of no more than 10%.
Q4: 193 kTB $134 million, EMC leader
According to IDC, in the fourth quarter of 2015, an external market was delivered to the Russian market storage systems for a total amount of 134.36 million dollars US dollars with a total capacity of 193,390 terabytes.
Compared to the same period in 2014, the capacity of delivered external storage systems increased by 20%, the volume of deliveries in monetary terms, in US dollars, decreased by 21.8%.
According to the results of the quarter, EMC became the leader in the Russian market for external storage systems, taking 30.4% of the market in capacitive terms, practically without changing the market share compared to the same period in 2014. Hitachi Data Systems demonstrated the maximum growth in delivered capacity in the fourth quarter, delivering external storage with a total capacity of almost 5 times higher than a year earlier. Sales of Hewlett Packard Enterprise and NetApp systems also increased compared to the same period in 2014 amid a decrease in supply activity of other market players.
The total delivered external storage capacity shipped in the fourth quarter of 2015 was almost a 64% higher than the total storage capacity delivered to the Russian market a quarter earlier. The increase in data did not save companies on storage. Despite the difficult economic conditions, customers have demonstrated their commitment to traditional procurement tactics, pushing back large purchases to the end of the year, "comments Mikhail Popov, IDC senior analyst for corporate systems.
In total, for the calendar year 2015, external storage systems with a total capacity of 480,539 terabytes were delivered to the Russian market for a total amount of 380.90 million US dollars. In 2015, the external storage market grew by 1.6% in capacitive terms, reducing in monetary terms by 32.6%. Such dynamics became possible due to the industry's inherent decrease in the average cost of terabytes and changed customer preferences, which were chosen by the systems of the middle price segment much more often than the systems of the initial and higher price segments.
The five largest suppliers of the Russian external storage market for the year were formed by EMC, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, IBM, Hitachi Data Systems and NetApp. Annual financial results decreased for all players, only Dell and Hitachi Data Systems did not exceed 10% of the barrier.
2014
According to the results of 2014, the total volume of the disk storage system market exceeded $565.15 million (+ 2.2% compared to 2013). The size of the DSS disk capacity delivered to the market amounted to 472.87 petabytes (+ 33.4% compared to 2013). Among the companies that showed the highest development dynamics in 2014, Huawei and Fujitsu showed a significant increase in financial turnover in the difficult conditions of the second half of 2014.
Q4
The Russian market for external disk storage systems in the fourth quarter of 2014 in monetary terms decreased by 12.4% compared to the same period in 2013, with an increase in the total number of disk capacity delivered to the market by 8.7%, IDC said.
During the reporting period, disk storage systems worth more than $171.78 million were delivered to the country, the total volume exceeded 161.11 petabytes. Industry leaders in the quarter did not lose ground: EMC, HP, IBM and HDS control almost 80% of the market.
In 2014, the growth of the total capacity of disk storage systems significantly outstripped the growth of the amount of information accumulated. This fact, according to IDC experts, reflects the desire of customers to prepare for possible adverse developments and planned budget cuts in 2015. The general economic situation, fluctuations in exchange rates and increased competition due to the emergence of new players and technologies significantly affected the financial results of the year, leveling the growth of the market in monetary terms.
Q3
Third Quarter 2014 Cost of External Disk Storage (DSS) Delivered the Russian market exceeded $114.38 million, IDC said in a quarterly study by EMEA Quarterly Disk Storage Systems Tracker. The total storage capacity exceeded 103.7 petabytes.
Comparing with the previous quarter of 2014, researchers point to market growth DSS of 22.3%, in capacity. In financial terms, compared to the same period in 2013 - a decline of 4.8%.
The final values, according to analysts, are due to factors:
- after a panic reaction to the imposition of sanctions against a number of large customers and a large-scale increase in purchases from other consumers, the situation began to level out against the background of meeting the main demand;
- The decrease in the value of the ruble and fluctuations in exchange rates required a revision of priorities in the distribution of IT budgets of many customers;
- the entry of new players into the market, their focus on the initial and middle price segments, made many Chief information officers think about the strategy for the development of DSS in organizations.
In the quarter, EMC, HP, IBM, and NetApp controlled more than 80% of the DSS market, leading Hitachi Data Systems.
Q1
According to a quarterly study IDC EMEA by Quarterly Disk Storage Systems Tracker, the external capacity storage systems delivered to the Russian market in the first quarter of 2014 amounted to more than 83.1 petabytes. The total value exceeded $117.76 million.
The results of the first quarter indicate a moderate growth of the DSS market by 3.5% in monetary terms. With a significant increase - by 35.3%, in gigabytes of capacity, compared to the first quarter of 2013.
Mikhail Popov, senior analyst at IDC, believes that significant annual growth is noted against the background:
- the continued reduction in the average cost of a gigabyte is the result of the evolutionary development of storage technologies and the gradual transition to less expensive types of memory for drives (from SLC to MLC, eMLC, TLC).
- some decrease in the level of annual margin in the channel
- reducing the number of active players in the sales channel
- a change in IBM's corporate strategy, which contributed to customer interest in third-party solutions.
Leaders: EMC, HP, Hitachi Data Systems and IBM - they control more than 80% of the DSS market.
2013
IDC predicted that for the whole of 2013 the Russian external DSS market will grow by 7.1% compared to last year, its volume will amount to $597.6 million in revenue, but then it will begin to slow down until 2017, setting a trend for the entire Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). Deliveries to the enterprise segment (large and very large customers), which dominated the procurement of external DSS, are approaching saturation, and small and medium-sized business customers will choose cloud storage services due to their low price, flexibility and increasingly convenient administration.
In total, according to the results of 2013, the Russian storage system market grew by 11.4% compared to the previous year to 473.4 petabytes. In monetary terms, the market volume decreased by 5% to 734.2 million dollars. Demand has reoriented to mid-range solutions. The supply of solutions of the highest segment in monetary terms decreased by 30%, the supply of solutions of the entry level decreased by 9.8%, but the supply of solutions of the middle level increased by almost 17%.
The leaders in terms of supply among suppliers remain companies, EMC,, and IBM. HP Hitachi Together, they hold more than 81% of the market, although it should be noted that this figure was five points less than a year earlier.
Fourth Quarter
According to IDC research, storage systems totaling 181.8 petabytes were delivered to the Russian market in the fourth quarter of 2013, totaling $253.8 million.
Q3
The revenue of manufacturers of external storage systems (DSS) in Russia reached $105.3 million, which in annual terms means a fall of 11.3%, IDC said in a quarterly study by IDC Russia Quarterly Storage Tracker.
The leaders among suppliers, in terms of supply, as in the previous quarter - companies, and EMC IBM, HP NetApp they hold under their influence more than half of the market. The total capacity DSS put on the market is about 68 thousand. TB - more by 1% compared to 2012.
Analysts note that the fall in revenue occurs against the background of a decrease in the average cost of a gigabyte and the final cost of the solution, however, competition among manufacturers is growing and the supply of market players who previously looked like outsiders in the total supply is growing noticeably.
Positive dynamics no longer accompany the external storage market in Russia - it is not one of the few where positive dynamics are noted. The general deterioration of the economic situation in Russia caused a severe situation in a number of segments of the IT market, which had a noticeable impact on the DSS market.
Q2
In the 2 quarter of 2013, the foreign DSS market in Russia grew by one percent, income increased by 4.5% compared to the same quarter a year ago, which was the weakest result since the beginning of the financial crisis. According to IDC, external DSS supplies in Russia amounted to $121.7 million in revenue, and the total delivered capacity was 56.3 petabytes.
The top 3 vendors of the market (EMC, HP and IBM) have reaffirmed their leading position in the CEMA region (Central and Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa): they collectively accounted for 78% of all sales of external DSS. EMC has continued to grow by one percent due to its success in entry-level and mid-range DSS despite declining high-end sales. IBM also rose 6.1% from the same quarter a year ago, HP's revenue fell 15.7%.
The last two vendors managed to find the right balance between legacy and new architecture solutions and successfully compete in the middle segment, but their sales of entry-level DSS and high-end systems decreased. Oracle's deliveries rose sharply - over 300% over the year - as a result of a number of successful projects, including Exadata implementations.
Suppliers in the "Other" category have collectively shown very good results in Russia this quarter - server vendors have successfully advanced to the DSS market. Dell has relied on low-cost direct-attached disk memory (DAS), and Fujitsu has reaped the benefits of its efforts (verticalisation, partnerships and purchases) in overseas markets (especially in Europe).
Economic stagnation (declining GDP and negative growth in industrial production) and political tensions contributed to the slowdown in the DSS market. Most of all, this affected the expenses of the public sector and small businesses. As for the positive aspects, infrastructure projects for the Olympic Games, the further expansion of data centers of Internet service providers (ISP) and the introduction of solutions for Big Data helped the market support growth.
Q1
The external storage market (DSS) in Russia did not hit revenue in the first quarter of 2013 - it reached $99.9 million, which corresponds to an increase of 6.2% in terms of the year. Recall that this figure in the fourth quarter of 2012 amounted to $179 million.
The total volume of external sold DSS on the market amounted to about 59 thousand. TB - 15.1% more than in 2012. Companies,, and EMC IBM Hitachi HP still hold the top positions in the rating of supply volume, behind them more than 83% of the market.
The external storage market, IDC noted in its next study, is one of the few in our country that remains positive. But its growth is difficult to compare even with the indicators of a year ago, from which IDC concludes: the general deterioration in Russia's economic situation has caused an extremely difficult situation in other segments of the IT market, which, in turn, has an increasingly noticeable impact on the DSS market.
Alexander Zagnetko, head of the Corporate Systems research program, IDC noted that such an indicator as annual growth in the volume of installed external capacity DSS in the crisis year 2009 in Russia amounted to almost 18%, which is clearly more than in the first quarter of 2013. At that time, the cost of media was rapidly decreasing, and the need to host large volumes of customer data was not as acute as today. The analyst states: "In our country, an extremely alarming situation has developed in the IT market. Even budget items related to systems and applications vital to business are subject to cuts. "
2012
Fourth Quarter
The revenue of manufacturers of external storage systems (DSS) in Russia in the fourth quarter exceeded $179 million, which in annual terms corresponds to an increase of 17.2%, IDC Russia concluded in a quarterly study by IDC Russia Quarterly Storage Tracker.
During the fourth quarter of 2012, about 100 thousand were sold on the Russian market in total. TB of disk capacity. Compared to the same period in 2011, the growth was 34%.
EMC leads the top three, which includes HP and IBM. The corporation's market share came close to 50%.
There is an increase in the interest of Russian equipment assemblers in the storage system segment: the product range is actively expanding, the volume of DSS supplies of various types is growing.
DSS usage in virtual environments is expanding, one of the world's top trends. Russia is no exception here, IDC noted - growth in this segment is significantly ahead of the dynamics of server supplies to virtualization infrastructures.
"Unlike many hardware markets, in 2013 the DSS segment will continue to develop quite quickly," said Alexander Zagnetko, head of the Corporate Systems research program. - There is reason to believe that we are entering the initial phase of a new cycle of explosive data growth triggered by a combination of phenomena called the "Third Platform"
Q3
The growth of the Russian market of external storage systems (DSS) in the third quarter of 2012 on an annualized basis amounted to 19.2%, with the volume of revenue of manufacturers $119 million (2 sq. - $105 million). The total capacity of the purchased systems reached 65.8 thousand. TB. Compared to the same period in 2011, the growth of this consumption indicator was slightly less than 30%.
Almost 80% - this is in monetary terms the total share of market leaders: EMC, HP and IBM.
The DSS market in the world, and Russia in particular, is moving towards new challenges, IDC experts say in a quarterly study. Today, users are becoming more and more difficult to navigate in huge arrays of unstructured data, and the technologies of the current concept of an intensive infrastructure development model are extremely expensive, so the success of network resources implementing new approaches and algorithms in working with content looks quite logical.
"Looking back at the path the market has taken in 5 years, you can draw interesting conclusions," said Alexander Zagnetko, head of the Corporate Systems research program. - During this time, the cost of one gigabyte in corporate DSS has decreased by more than 7 times, user costs have increased by only one and a half times, and the total capacity of DSS delivered in a quarter has increased by almost 14 times. So far, there is no technological opportunity to further reduce the cost of storage at a high pace and there is no reason to believe that customer budgets for IT will increase significantly. At the same time, there are hardly any reasons to doubt that the volume of processed and stored data will continue to grow rapidly. All this means that in the near future the industry will enter a new, extremely difficult period of its development. "
Q2
The revenue of players in the Russian market for external storage systems (DSS) in the second quarter of 2012 reached almost $105 million, which in annual terms corresponds to growth in 27.3%, analysts at IDC Russia said in a Quarterly Storage Tracker report. Consumers in the second quarter purchased external DSS with a total capacity of 53.9 thousand. TB. The growth in this indicator compared to the same period in 2011 was slightly less than 70%.
More than a third of the market is held in monetary terms by EMC. Another 43% of sales combined came from HP and IBM solutions, with the two vendors finishing the quarter with nearly identical revenue figures.
As expected, the dynamics of reducing the cost of storage per gigabyte no longer looks as impressive as before. Over the year, this figure decreased by less than 25% (for comparison, its decline rate was more than 40% three years ago).
Suppliers continue to increase the number of storage optimization tools in their products. These efforts are evident in the proliferation of technologies ranging from DSS virtualization to new approaches to SSD integration in tiered storage. At the same time, customers who do not have a significant IT budget are not spoiled by the attention of the largest players. In this niche, as before, systems prevail, assembled - often directly by users - based on the most inexpensive solutions.
Storage Developers
By convention, all DSS manufacturers can be divided into world leaders (brands "A"), other large manufacturers (brands "B") and local (local) assemblers. Until recently, a limited set of solutions based mainly on DAS (Direct Access Storage) or SAN (Storage Area Networks) architectures based on the Fibre Channel protocol was presented on the Russian DSS market.
Companies from the first group have gained the highest authority in the market. They have a wide partner and service network around the world, invest a lot in the development of new products and marketing, have billions in financial turnover (in particular, in the storage sector), etc. The products of the world's leading manufacturers (A-brands) account for the main share of sales of external disk DSS, both in quantitative and monetary terms.
World-leading DSS developers:
- Dell (PowerVault, EqualLogic, Compellent)
- EMS (Celerra, CLARiiON, Centera, Iomega, Symmetrix VMAX/VMAXe, VNX, VPLEX)
- Fujitsu ETERNUS FibreCAT( , , Quantum)
- Hitachi (SMS, WMS, AMS, CAP, USP, VTL)
- HP (StorageWorks, EVA, 3PAR)
- IBM (Storwize, System Storage D, System Storage T, System Storage N, SONAS)
- NetApp (FAS, VTL, V, E)
- Oracle (Sun ZFS Storage, Sun Flash, Pillar Axiom, StorageTek)
The DSS market is experiencing a rapid rise, and naturally a series of acquisitions of independent developers by large players continues on it. In particular, Dell acquired Compellent Technologies, previously HP acquired 3PAR (trading with the same Dell), EMC joined its line of products Kazeon and Isilon Systems.
Since DSS inseparable from computing resources, it is not surprising that many of the world's largest storage manufacturers are simultaneously leaders in the server market. Of the manufacturers listed above, only three are exclusively focused on storage - EMC, Hitachi, and NetApp.
Of the DSS manufacturers represented in our country, we note companies that belong to the above class "B."
- AXUS
- Buffalo
- Cisco (Linksys)
- D-Link
- Dot Hill Systems
- Infortrend
- Intransa
- Maxtronic
- Nexsan
- Overland Storage
- Plasmon
- QNAP Systems
- SGI
- Thecus
The increasingly popular concept of public clouds has an impact on the DSS segment. Owners of public clouds are less likely to pay a brand premium, which can open up wide opportunities for second-tier manufacturers, niche or new[5] players[5].
Domestic disk DSS manufacturers (for example, DEPO Computers (Depot Electronics)) assemble their systems based on components from foreign manufacturers, including Microsemi (formerly Adaptec), Chenbro, Falconstore, Intel, LSI Logic, Lustre and others. In general, locally produced DSS are supplied mainly to small projects. In addition, it is important to note that in the DSS segment there is a persistent tendency to displace domestic companies with global ones.
An important difference between A-brand systems and local DSS is the presence of special software designed for data recovery and protection, backup, remote management and monitoring, "Information Lifecycle Management" (ILM), diagnostics, etc. Software with similar functions is also developed by many independent companies, so it can be purchased separately. Of course, in the absence of compatibility problems.
The cost of DSS is very dependent on functionality and additional options - expansion modules, such as hard drives, service, etc.[6].
2011
In 2011, external DSS expenditures in Russia exceeded $460 million. IDC forecasts that the DSS market as a whole will continue to grow at a fairly fast pace, with the external storage segment demonstrating higher growth and remaining a priority for investment among all categories of enterprise hardware.
Against the background of the EMEA region, the volumes of external DSS supplies to Russia are distinguished by the most significant growth rates not only in monetary terms, but also in terms of the total capacity of purchased systems.
Both in the DSS market as a whole and in the segment of external storage systems, the leaders in 2011 were EMC, HP and IBM. Among the many challenges faced by customers, two main, to some extent related, are the need to accommodate rapidly growing volumes of heterogeneous data and navigation with quick access to relevant information. The development of tools for solving such problems when working with big data, such as Data mining Data mining, does not yet allow us to talk about a breakthrough in this area. As well as cloud storage, DSS virtualization and deduplication technologies cannot be considered a panacea, although these solutions can increase the return on IT investments. Suffice it to say that in 2011, user costs for DSS increased by almost one and a half times.
Q4
The revenue of external storage manufacturers (DSS) delivered to the Russian market in the fourth quarter of 2011 exceeded $152 million, which corresponds to an increase of 64.5% compared to the same period of the previous year. This is stated in the next report of the IDC.
Consumers purchased external DSS with a total capacity of 72.5 thousand. TB. Growth in this indicator for the year amounted to more than 145%. EMC is the leader in the Russian external storage market. Its share in total sales amounted to 39%.
In general, in 2011, the DSS market showed impressive dynamics, according to IDC materials. Its volume in monetary terms increased by 50%, and the total capacity of systems purchased by Russian customers increased by 160%.
- The line between servers and storage is increasingly leveling DSS. Some of the processes supported in the past by servers are now assigned to the storage infrastructure and vice versa.
- Russia remains a country in which the share of equipment costs so far prevails in IT budgets. However, despite the reduction in the share of hardware costs in developed countries, it is not necessary to expect a noticeable reduction in the cost of IT ownership, since in most cases the reduction in hardware costs is overlapped by an increase in the cost of management and support systems.
- There is an increasing interest in different systems of data structuring and analysis. The need to analyze trends, monitor new factors affecting the competitive landscape, and carry out planning is increasingly affecting IT ecosystems. Massive amounts of unstructured data, countless backups, and a shaft of incoming information are troubling to customers. The construction of hierarchical storage systems, data prioritization policies, and new media such as enterprise SSDs do not always cope with the growth of aggregated data.
- There is little doubt that as the cloud services market becomes more and more customers, especially from the small and medium-sized business segment, will show significant interest in it, hoping to reduce costs, IDC believes.
- In 2012, DSS providers will continue to work to improve the utilization of their solutions using software. Virtualization and deduplication technologies in this segment will spread more widely, to some extent repeating the evolution of server platforms.
Q1
The revenue of manufacturers of external storage systems (DSS) delivered to the Russian market in the first quarter of 2011 exceeded $71 million, which in annual terms corresponds to an increase of 48%.
Consumers in the first quarter purchased external DSS with a total capacity of 26.7 thousand. Tb, which equates to an increase of more than 129% year-on-year, IDC said in a report.
EMC is the leader in the Russian external storage market. Its share in total sales amounted to 37%. In monetary terms, the market share of the top three, which in addition to EMC includes HP and IBM, reaches 80%.
The results of the quarter confirmed the previously made optimistic forecasts for the development of this segment of the Russian IT market, experts from the research company say. Demand for DSS remains very high.
While some players complained about supply chain disruptions caused by Japan's earthquake and predicted a possible rise in selling prices for their products, the cost of storage continues to decline. In the segment of external DSS, it has already dropped below $3 per GB. Nevertheless, the growth rate of the volume of processed and stored information is so significant that the revenue of manufacturers continues to increase.
At the same time, if we talk about domestic specifics, it should be noted that the behavior of many customers is currently determined by the desire to immediately complete all significant infrastructure development projects. During the election period, the allocation of budgets, coordination, planning and implementation of any initiatives, as a rule, is in question, the document says.
The attention of leading manufacturers is increasingly attracted by the SMB segment. This is largely due to the fact that the number of large customers in our country is relatively small, but it is also obvious that the development of technologies makes it possible to bring to the market more and more affordable solutions with serious functionality, IDC analysts say.
Alexander Zagnetko, head of IDC's Enterprise Systems research program, believes that "literally before our eyes" there is another transformation of the storage model.
According to him, if at the height of the crisis the introduction of new approaches was usually postponed, today the increasingly active promotion of integrated solutions in which software and hardware are combined, as well as virtualization, "erosion" of physical infrastructure, generate new opportunities and new challenges.
"In particular, cloud offerings, the further development of the concept of" IT as a service, "bring to a new level the problems of security and compatibility, as well as impose increasingly serious requirements for the development of telecommunications networks," he concluded.
2010
Results of the year
According to a new IDC study called Russia Enterprise Storage Systems Market 2011-2015 Forecast and 2010 Vendor Shares, in 2010 the revenue of DSS suppliers in Russia approached the pre-crisis value and reached $399 million.
According to the company's forecast, the DSS market will continue to develop at a fairly fast pace, with the segment of external storage devices growing in monetary terms over five years by almost 75%. The top three among DSS manufacturers have not changed. EMC, HP and IBM collectively account for nearly 80% of deliveries to the Russian market, the report said.
The volume of data created, processed and aggregated is growing rapidly. Huge unstructured arrays, countless backups and a shaft of incoming information cause users great concern.
Building hierarchical storage systems, tiering policies, and new media such as enterprise SSDs do not always meet the challenges that customers face. Tape libraries are again seen as one possible way to reduce storage costs, IDC said.
The challenges of data protection are equally acute. Many consumers express concerns about possible vulnerabilities in IT infrastructures, both proprietary and outsourcing.
The share of infrastructure hardware costs is reduced. However, in Russia, the role of equipment remains very significant, in particular due to the fact that most owners are not ready to cede control over IT assets to external service providers.
While cloud services are still in the pipeline, the segment will have a "huge impact" on the DSS market in the near future , said Alexander Zagnetko, head of IDC's Enterprise Systems research program. "A manufacturer who in a year will not be able to give the customer a clear answer to the question of why to buy equipment, if with minimal costs it is possible to organize data storage in the cloud, will face great difficulties," he concluded.
Q3
The revenue of external storage manufacturers (DSS) delivered to the Russian market in the third quarter of 2010 exceeded $65 million, which is 25% more than a quarter earlier and 59% more than the results of the same period in 2009.
In the third quarter, consumers were supplied with external DSS with a total capacity of 18 thousand. Tb., Which corresponds to an increase of more than 150% on an annualized basis. EMC is the leader in the Russian external storage market. Its share in total sales amounted to 33%. The closest competitor - HP - holds 29% of the market.
There are more and more systems on the market that use solid state media (SSD). The noticeable reduction in the cost of storage when using DSS, noted over the past year, still does not allow us to talk about price competition with more traditional HDDs. Despite some of the tangible technological advantages that solid state drives have, their implementation is still relatively slow.
Q1
The revenue of storage manufacturers (DSS) delivered to the Russian market in the first quarter of 2010 exceeded $48 million, which is 35% less than a quarter earlier, but 60% higher than the results of the same period in 2009 (according to IDC).
In the first quarter, consumers were supplied with DSS with a total capacity of 9 thousand. Tb., Which corresponds to an increase of 103% on an annualized basis. EMC leads the Russian external storage market by a wide margin. Its share in total sales amounted to 38%. The closest competitor - HP - occupies 22% of the market.
IDC is seeing increasing adoption of enterprise Flash and Ethernet-based connection protocols. Given the noticeable reduction in the cost of storing data in modern systems, factors such as speed of access to information, security and compatibility are increasingly coming to the fore when choosing specific products.
2009
The impact of the crisis in 2009 was felt in all segments of the IT industry. Despite the great interest of Russian customers in DSS, in 2009 the decline in the industry exceeded 40% in monetary terms. Nevertheless, corporate-level DSS remained an extremely popular solution - the total capacity of implemented systems of this type increased by almost 20%. As soon as the IT industry showed signs of stabilization, IDC recorded a noticeable increase in DSS sales. New technologies and approaches to storage architecture enable more and more customers to get reliable and efficient DSS at an affordable price.
