Oracle buys Dyn
Main Article: Oracle Acquisitions
On November 21, 2016, enterprise software manufacturer Oracle announced the purchase of Dyn. The deal became known a month after Dyn suffered the largest DDoS attack in history. The cost of the acquisition has not been disclosed.
With the purchase of DNS provider Dyn, Oracle hopes to change the principle and expand the scope of its cloud solutions. In September 2016, Oracle announced the creation of data centers for the second generation cIaaS and stated that Amazon's leadership in the cloud market was coming to an end.
Oracle already offers enterprise-class IaaS and PaaS services for companies that build and release Internet applications and cloud services, says Thomas Kurian, president of product development at Oracle. - Dyn is a changing company, and DNS has become a critical, central component for the natural expansion of our cloud computing platform.[1] |
Powerful DDoS attack
On October 21, 2016, Dyn's DNS infrastructure survived a DDoS attack, which the media dubbed the largest in history. As a result of the attack, users could not get to popular sites such as Twitter, Spotify, Reddit, CNN, Github, Re/code and PayPal.
Users living on the East Coast of the United States were primarily affected by the actions of hackers. The attackers did not ask for a ransom or make any other demands.
The DDoS attack on Dyn was carried out using a giant botnet that included tens of millions of devices: IP cameras, routers, printers and other devices from the Internet of Things. Together, they transmitted data to Dyn servers from speed of 1,2 Tbit/s.
