MegaFon has introduced Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS) technology in Moscow, allowing 3G and 4G technologies to work together on the same frequencies. With its help, it was possible to speed up the mobile Internet without degrading the quality of voice calls. The company announced this on July 25, 2024.

The operator's engineers use big data tools to constantly monitor the load of MegaFon's Moscow network, to which tens of millions of devices are connected every day, and their number is constantly increasing. In the first quarter of 2024 alone, almost 6 million tourists arrived in the capital - this is 20% more than in 2019. Accordingly, visitor mobile traffic is also growing.

In order to avoid overload and more effectively use existing frequencies, technical specialists launched a large-scale refarming program in Moscow, part of which has already been completed in the southeast of the city. The program, which affected over 850 base stations, is a redistribution of frequencies from previous generations of communication networks to the modern LTE standard.

Refarming usually involves the transfer of 2G and 3G networks to the LTE standard, however, in the case of high population density in megacities and with large transmission volumes data , this can affect the quality of voice calls. Moreover, many M2M devices still work on the third generation network, including ATMs payment terminals, systems navigation and various sensors used in residential buildings.

We did not want to sacrifice either voice or speed, so the compromise was the introduction of DSS technology, which is able to dynamically allocate resources between 3G and LTE networks depending on the load. The operator's engineers have increased the length of fiber-optic communication lines (FOCL) in the settlements of the Moscow region and New Moscow, the number of inhabitants of which exceeds 1 million people. This made it possible to increase the network bandwidth to 10 Gbps, as well as stabilize the quality of the mobile signal even during hours of heavy network load. Thanks to this, the speed of downloading applications and videos, as well as connections in online games in gadgets, increased by 30%.

Every year the population in the TiNAO increases by 55-60 thousand people, and the Moscow region - by 80-90 thousand, regional authorities say. The growing number of mobile Internet users is consuming more and more traffic, connecting a variety of devices to the network: from smartphones and laptops to TVs and smart home devices. Using Big Data tools, they determined that the volume of downloaded gigabytes in Troitsk and Filimonkovsky settlements in TiNAO increased by 66% over the year. In this regard, technicians laid fiber optic lines in both locations and now subscribers can download voluminous files and enjoy watching movies and TV shows in high quality at an average speed of 45 Mbps.

In parallel, MegaFon engineers are completing the construction of a fiber optic line in the Taldomsky urban district of the Moscow region. By the end of 2024, VOLS will connect MegaFon's telecom equipment in Chekhov, Bogorodsky, Sergiev Posad, Dmitrovsky and Istra urban districts, as well as in Shchelkovo and Klin.

MegaFon has upgraded more than 570 base stations in the Moscow Region as part of a refarming program - the transfer of frequencies used in 2G networks to the modern LTE standard. At the first stage - in the summer of 2023 - MegaFon specialists optimized the 2G network and designed a frequency-territorial plan of the region where the refarming took place.

Thanks to this, it was possible to supplement the current 2G network with a new LTE-1800 range that allows you to use the Internet at high speeds. Modernization of the network at the Central Ring Road

MegaFon has upgraded the network on the Central Ring Road (TsKAD) with a length of 336.5 kilometers. During the implementation of the program, the 1800 MHz range began to be used exclusively for 4G, and part of the 900 MHz spectrum was also transferred to the modern communication standard. The remaining capacity will be enough to, as before, provide voice communication in 2G at a high level, the company noted.

According to MegaFon estimates, the use of new ranges has helped to increase the speed of mobile Internet by 30%, improve the coverage and penetration of the network inside buildings both in small towns and in large cities. Also, the coverage area of ​ ​ VoLTE technology has expanded significantly, which provides users with crystal clear sound for voice connections in the 4G network.

To further increase the network capacity for 4G, two three 2100 MHz bands were given in a number of territories. At the same time, the remaining frequencies will continue to ensure the operation of devices that support 3G, for example, ATMs and IoT sensors.

MegaFon regularly monitors both the load on the network and the transition of users to new technologies in each region. The company will continue to implement a refarming program in 2023.

On December 8, 2022, MegaFon announced the completion of a project to improve the quality of communication in Dmitrov. As a result, the speed of mobile Internet for residents of the city increased by 54%

The project, which included upgrading existing base stations and building new ones, began in September 2022 and was completed in just three months.

Over the past year, the consumption of mobile Internet traffic in Dmitrov has grown by 40%. To prepare the network for further loads, MegaFon's technicians installed other equipment at the base stations to increase the network capacity. Now, regardless of future loads, subscribers will be able to use high-quality high-speed mobile Internet. After the upgrade was completed, the median download speed in the city was 50.3 Mbps. When planning the development of the network, MegaFon analyzed the consumption of mobile traffic in each location and, based on big data, predicted a further increase in load. Based on these calculations, the company's specialists have identified places in which the construction and modernization of infrastructure will improve the quality of communication for the maximum number of subscribers.

The work mainly took place in residential neighborhoods, where the cellular signal in some locations may be weak due to dense development. To amplify the signal, MegaFon used the 800 MHz band, which has a high penetrating capacity.

Modernization of the network in Gorny Altai
