2023: Loss - 160 million rubles
In 2023, the net loss of the Moskvich automobile plant reached 160 million rubles. This was announced in mid-February 2024 by Sergei Kogogin, General Director of KamAZ, which manages Moskvich together with the Moscow government.
According to Kogogin, the Moscow enterprise produces cars not in the volumes for which it was originally calculated. In 2024, Moskvich planned to produce 50 thousand cars. However, as the head of KamAZ noted in a conversation with Vedomosti, the break-even level is achieved with the production of 40 thousand cars per year, and this year the capital's plant is focused on 30-35 thousand cars. Moskvich's Chinese technology partner, JAC, "is far from the largest automotive corporation in China," said a top manager.
Small assembly "Muscovites" can achieve up to 150 thousand rubles savings per car. For this, according to Sergei Kogogin, additional investments in the amount of 4 billion rubles may be required. These will be joint-stock financing or borrowed funds of banks, he said.
The head of KamAZ called the increase in the cost of Muscovites inevitable, because initially the financial model was considered at a rate of nine rubles per yuan, and at the beginning of 2024 the ruble is one and a half times cheaper. Kogogin attributed problems with the sale of already produced cars to the general cooling of the market, cars of all brands are unsold.
During 2024, the plant will switch to full-cycle production and launch at least one more model - the Moskvich 8 D-class crossover, the company said. The appearance of Moskvich 5, which is a re-tailored JAC Sehol X6, is also expected.[1]

2024: Moskvich plant introduced robots for the production of cars using full-cycle technology
The Moskvich plant has introduced robots for the production of cars using full-cycle technology. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin announced this on May 14, 2024.
Moskvich continues to develop. Now a modern robotic welding line has been mounted, so we are moving to a full technological cycle of assembling cars, perhaps the first in the country among those factories that were stopped by Western investors, - said the mayor of the capital. |
According to him, the company will paint the body and apply reinforced anti-corrosion coating of the body, taking into account the climatic conditions of Russia.
As the editor-in-chief of the magazine "Za Rulem" Maxim Kadakov, who visited the plant, noted, the transition to the assembly of the full cycle should benefit car owners.
It's not a full weld, as we usually imagine. Very large ready-made components come from China, that is, these are already welded body sides, partially welded floor, doors, hood. They are finished on Moskvich, and after the end of the work, the VIN-number of the body is applied in a fully automatic mode. This is such a robot with smart vision, "he explained. |
Kadakov added that thanks to the new equipment, the body has become better protected from corrosion, especially in the weld zone and on the bottom.
By mid-May 2024, 114 robots and 145 unmanned delivery vehicles were operating on the Moskvich production line, and 490 new jobs were created.
The mayor's office Moscow notes that due to the localization of welding, painting, assembly and quality control processes, the share of production operations in Russia has increased 18 times. Now, instead of about 50 components, more than 900 parts are used when assembling finished cars. The transition to full-cycle production will reduce the logistics costs of the plant by up to 25%.[3]

Start of production of cars "Moskvich" on the basis of cars of the Chinese brand JAC
In Moscow, in November 2022, the production of Moskvich cars began at the former Renault plant. We are talking about a large assembly. The machines are delivered to the enterprise in disassembled form, then the parts are assembled together. The "Muscovites" will be based on cars of the Chinese brand JAC Motors. They will appear on the market before the end of this year.
Start Building Dealer Network
On October 3, 2022, the Moskvich Moscow Automobile Plant announced the beginning of the formation of a dealer network. The company has opened applications for official sales and maintenance dealer status.
At the first stage, we will accept applications from candidates from 23 cities of Russia. Applications are open until October 21, 2022. |
It is noted that Moskvich intends to open dealerships in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kazan, Chelyabinsk, Ufa, Volgograd, Krasnodar, Saratov and in 15 other cities. In the future, the network of car dealerships is planned to be expanded to other cities.
The company stressed that Moskvich is betting on electric vehicles, so one of the mandatory criteria is the readiness to create infrastructure for their demonstration, sale and maintenance.
For us, high customer satisfaction is important not only with the plant's products, but also with maintenance, so this will be one of the priority areas in the work of our company, the company emphasized. |
The Moskvich plant should start working by the end of this year. By agreement between him and KamAZ (the main industrial partner of the enterprise), 5 billion rubles will be invested in the development of Moskvich at the first stage - the funds will be spent on "localization of nodes and components and adaptation of production capacities."
The lineup of the revived brand will include five models: four crossovers and one sedan. Officially, nothing is said about them, while unofficial data are as follows: Chinese JACs will be called the revived Muscovites. Of course, renamed.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said earlier in 2022 that the plant will produce "the most modern models," and, according to him, it is planned to attract foreign partners to the project itself, since "it is impossible to create a domestic car on its own from scratch."[4]
Renault left 14 billion rubles on accounts after leaving Russia
Renault left 14 billion rubles on the accounts after leaving Russia. The money will go to pay salaries to employees and settle with counterparties who have claims to the plant. The mayor of the Russian capital Sergei Sobyanin announced this on August 24, 2022 on the air of the TVC TV channel.
Businesses like Renault, which has closed completely, or some trading brands, they have left. Renault we took for the ruble practically... And they entered into an agreement with Kamaz in order to develop automotive production there. I think it will work out, - said Sobyanin. |
The termination of Renault's activities in Russia and the transfer of the company's Russian assets (a plant in Moscow to the Moscow government and a 67.69% stake in AvtoVAZ - FSUE NAMI) under the deal for the ruble scheme brought Renault Group a loss of €2.3 billion. This is stated in the financial statements of the concern for the first half of 2022.
The losses incurred are quite sensitive even for such a large automaker as Renault Group, experts interviewed by Izvestia say. According to Sergei Burgazliev, an independent consultant for the automotive industry, it will be very difficult for the company to compensate for them in a short time, €2.3 billion is a serious amount. For example, the creation of a full-fledged automobile plant with stamping, with a capacity of 200-250 thousand cars per year, costs about €1 billion, the specialist noted.
As the press service of the mayor and the government of the capital reported, the priority of the Moskvich plant will be the production of electric machines - as both personal transport and urban: taxis and car sharing for Moscow and the Moscow region, other regions of Central Russia and large agglomerations of the country. The annual need only for taxis and car sharing in Moscow and the Moscow region is from 40 to 60 thousand electric vehicles.[5]
Nationalization of Renault assets in Russia and renaming the plant to Moskvich
Russian assets Renault are transferred to state ownership, reported Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian on May 16, 2022. The decision was made due to the company's refusal to resume production amid a conflict on. To Ukraine The share in "" - AvtoVAZ(FSUE NAMI 67.69% of the shares), the remaining shares of the automaker will retain the GC "," Rostec the Renault plant Russia will own (100% Moscow Government of the shares).
- The Renault plant will produce cars under the Moskvich brand, said Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin. The revived Muscovites will become electric vehicles in the future.
- Maintenance of Renault cars in the Russian Federation will now be carried out by AvtoVAZ.
- KAMAZ will become the main technological partner of the revived Moskvich Moscow Automobile Plant.
- One of the main conditions of the transaction with Renault on AvtoVAZ: assistance from the French company in the supply of its components and the ability to produce cars on the current platform, said the head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation Denis Manturov.
The deal to nationalize Renault's assets implies the possibility of a repurchase of the stake by a foreign concern over the next six years.
On May 17, 2022, it became known that the former Renault group plant in Moscow will remain Russian, there is no opportunity to buy it back from the former owner, said Deputy Mayor of the capital Maxim Liksutov.
On June 06, 2022, it became known that the plant was renamed Moskvich.
Suspension of production after the start of Russia's special operation in Ukraine
Renault suspended production at the plant in February 2022, citing logistical problems due to the conflict in Ukraine. Renault's decision to resume production, however, has received support from the French government, which is the company's top shareholder, according to Reuters sources.
"Renault, with the support of the French government, is resuming car production in Moscow, thereby defying the pan-European trend to close production sites in Russia," The Guardian reported on March 22.
Later it was announced that Renault would nevertheless suspend production activities in the Russian Federation from March 23, according to a statement on the company's website.
