A cell tower was flooded in Bashkiria due to fears of the dangers of 5G
On October 10, 2024, it became known that in the village of Tashbulatovo, Abzelilovsky District, Republic of Bashkortostan, an act of vandalism occurred against a cell tower. Locals, fearing the harmful effects of 5G technology, dismantled the tower, which provided mobile communications within a radius of up to 35 kilometers.
According to CNews, the tower belonged to the Tele2 operator. Unknown persons unscrewed the fastening bolts at the base of the mast, which led to its fall. At the same time, the design touched the power line. The damage from the incident is estimated at ₽3 million. A criminal case has been opened on the fact of the incident.
Dinar Sharafutdinov, Deputy Minister of Digital Development of Public Administration of the Republic of Bashkortostan, noted that digitalization is actively developing in the region, but not all residents are ready for these changes. He stressed that when installing base stations, all the necessary norms are observed and permits are obtained.
This is not the first case of vandalism against communication facilities in this village. In 2021, residents of Tashbulatovo were already demolishing a cell tower using a tractor. Then the damage amounted to about ₽2 million. The main reason for such actions, local residents cite fears for their health and dissatisfaction with the fact that their opinion was not taken into account when installing the equipment.
The Minister of Digital Development of Bashkiria Gennady Razumikin previously reported on the problem of radiophobia among residents of the republic, which leads to cases of arson of equipment of cellular operators.
The problem of destroying communication towers due to fear of 5G technology is not limited to Bashkiria. Similar incidents occurred in other regions of Russia. For example, a resident of the Tver region cut down a cell tower located next to his house.[1]
Tele2 lost frequencies for conversion to 5G
On January 15, 2024, the Ministry of Digital Development of the Russian Federation announced the decision of the State Commission on Radio Frequencies (GKRCH) on the allocation of frequency bands for organizing mobile communications in Russia. In accordance with the document, Tele2 has lost its frequency resource for conversion to 5G technology.
According to the Kommersant newspaper, we are talking about frequencies for fixed wireless access in Yekaterinburg: bands 24.549-25.249 GHz and 25.557-26.257 GHz. These are the ranges "that were allocated in Yekaterinburg for MDMS networks" (Marconi Digital Multipoint System). It is noted that the company no longer used these frequencies, and their withdrawal may be due to Ministry of Digital Development plans for conversion for the new 5G communication standard in large Russian cities.
The document SCRF says the following: "Refuse LLC T2 Mobile (OGRN 1137746610088) to extend the term of the decision of the State Committee for Radio Frequencies dated 27.09.2004 No. 04-02-05-265 on the basis of a negative conclusion on the possibility of allocating (extending the term of allocation) radio frequencies."
Market participants note that the license was not extended due to the fact that the considered strip is promising for 5G services, and Tele2 did not use it. In accordance with the roadmap Ministry of Digital Development frequency conversion for 5G should affect the bands 2.3-2.4 GHz, 4.8-4.99 GHz and 24-29 GHz, while the base frequency band for the development of 5G in Russia is 4.4-4.9 GHz. In most countries of the world, the main range for 5G adoption is the 3.4-3.8 GHz band. In other words, frequencies have been seized from Tele2, which are intended specifically for 5G in the Russian Federation.
Technically, any radio technology can work in 26 GHz bands. The range is now used by satellite communication systems, for example Starlink, it can also be used for radio relay lines, - said Aleksei Boyko, an analyst at the Telegram channel abloud62.[2] |

Tele2 launches international 5G roaming in Switzerland
Tele2, an alternative mobile operator, announced on August 17, 2020 that it had launched an international one - on the 5Groaming Sunrise network in. Switzerland Tele2 partner has already deployed commercial 5G networks in 554 settlements of the country, making the technology available to ordinary users. Now Tele2 subscribers whose devices support this technology will automatically register on the network.
International 5G roaming has become available to Tele2 customers in Switzerland, flights with which resumed on August 15. The technology can be independently tested by owners of Samsung devices on a full-fledged fifth generation network. Commercial services 5G Sunrise in June 2020 earned in 554 cities in Switzerland. To operate the technology, the operator uses 700 MHz, 1400 MHz and a 3.4-3.8 GHz band, which is optimal for deploying fifth-generation networks. To connect to 5G Sunrise services, subscribers do not need to change their smartphone settings - registration on the network is automatic.
Tele2's international roaming partner, operator Sunrise, focuses on providing mass users with the capabilities of 5G technology - ultra-speed, minimal response and capacity. A short response gives instant access to the content of operationally demanding applications, extra speed allows you to download films in a few seconds, and capacity - to use video streaming services in parallel to several subscribers. Swiss subscribers connect to 5G networks instead of home Internet and use this technology, for example, for cloudgaming - 5G allows you to play complex AAA games from a smartphone. Now all these features are available to Tele2 subscribers during their stay in Switzerland.
5G technology in Tele2 international roaming is available on the following devices: Samsung Galaxy S10 5G, Samsung Galaxy S20 5G, Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G, Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra 5G, Samsung Galaxy Note 20 5G, Samsung Galaxy S20 + 5G.
"The 5G network in Switzerland operates in more than half a thousand settlements and, paradoxically, is sometimes the only opportunity to access high-speed Internet. We often have to answer the question of what the technology gives ordinary users. The launch of international 5G roaming will allow Tele2 subscribers to test the standard outside test zones, on a really working network. European colleagues have made the technology so accessible that its use is not much different from the usual generations of communication: in just a couple of clicks, the user can choose a tariff for 5G on the site, and at the same time purchase a device with technology support, "said Oleg Reshetin, director of strategic development of the Tele2 product portfolio. |
Tele2 tested in live broadcast mode 5G network in the mm-band in Moscow
On April 22, 2020, it became known that the Tele2 operator organized a live broadcast on the 5G network in the mm-band in the urban environment. The technoblogger broadcast from the Sony Xperia 5G smartphone, moving along Tverskaya Street and Teatralnaya Square. The live broadcast showed the operation of 5G when moving the user in conditions of dense urban development. The company believes that the millimeter band (27 GHz) can be considered as an addition to the 3.4-3.8 GHz frequency band - the main condition for the successful deployment of 5G networks in Russia.
Testing became possible thanks to the outdoor coverage of the 5G network Tele2, which covers Tverskaya Street - from the Kremlin to the Garden Ring. The work of the pilot zone is supervised by DIT of Moscow, which, together with the operator, is exploring the possibilities of the latest technology for the infrastructure of the capital and improving the quality of life of Muscovites.
During the tests, Sony's mobile terminal based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chip and Qualcomm Snapdragon X50 modem provided a stable connection. Thus, in places of mass accumulation of subscribers, the millimeter band can be in addition to the "low-frequency" range of 3.4-3.8 GHz, without which it is impossible to widely cover the 5G network.
Tele2 showed a real consumer scenario. In the future, it will allow smartphone owners to use the Internet at ultra-high speeds and with minimal delay in mobility - on the go, sitting in a taxi or public transport. This opens up opportunities for the use of virtual and augmented reality technologies and esports games. Previously, 5G tests were carried out in conditions close to laboratory conditions: indoors, in conditions of limited mobility, at a minimum distance of the smartphone from the base station. Tele2 launched a 5G pilot zone based on Ericsson equipment on August 8, 2019. In addition to solid outdoor coverage, the company provided indoor coverage in the flagship salon on 25/9 Tverskaya Street. The 5G test zone is launched in the 27 GHz band in NSA mode using the anchor band Band7 LTE (2600 MHz). NSA mode allows you to deploy 5G based on LTE networks and simplifies the implementation of the standard at the initial stage.

Tele2 launched the "City of the Future" with 5G on Tverskaya
Tele2, an alternative mobile operator, on November 21, 2019 announced the launch of the City of the Future zone in the 5G Hub in the flagship salon on Tverskaya Street in central Moscow. With virtual reality technology, the operator shows how the 5G standard will change the urban environment and make life in the metropolis more comfortable. Visitors to the zone will see fifth-generation communications technology transform transportation, medicine and security in the city.
To see virtual reality, you need to point a smartphone or tablet with pre-installed software at the marker placed in the cabin. When you point the screen at a special label in front of the user's eyes, "live" scenes will appear. They will show the new Moscow after the commercial launch of 5G networks and the massive spread of technology.
The minimum data latency, high speeds and high capacity specific to 5G will promote the use of drones for security, emergency medical care and catering purposes. In virtual reality deployed in the cabin on Tverskaya, a visitor will see a police drone fly to the scene when SOS is pressed on a smartphone and records material evidence. The caffedron, on command, delivers a hot drink to the client from a nearby cafe, and the medical drone rushes to the aid of the victim, while calling the ambulance team.
The City of the Future zone also demonstrates how 5G technology is reforming public and personal transport. Virtual scenes will show how the "smart" stop interacts with the user's smartphone. At his request, she will inform about the best route and arrival of transport, help order a taxi, and at the same time inform the city dweller about the most interesting services for him. Stopping from sleep mode goes into active mode only when the passenger approaches, which allows you to use the city's resources economically.
The "smart" transition presented in the 5G Hub analyzes pedestrian and car traffic and helps to build optimal traffic control modes to reduce traffic jams. "Zebra" appears on the roadway only when a pedestrian approaches, and the border between cars and the crossing is marked by laser rulers. As soon as a pedestrian crosses the roadway, the traffic light automatically switches to car mode.
The launch of 5G is expected to open up new opportunities for the use of unmanned vehicles, primarily urban technology. The virtual reality scene shows a robotic snowplow that works with minimal inconvenience to urban transport and automatically stops in front of pedestrian crossings. Data from the ground infrastructure is sent in real time to robotic platforms and allows you to accurately control the equipment.
When discussing the prospects for the development of 5G, it often raises the question of what the technology will give ordinary users. Tele2 was the first in Russia to launch a 5G network in its pilot zone in the center of Moscow and continued to develop the project, explaining the advantages of technology to residents of the city. We have created a working demozone on Tverskaya, where each passer-by can feel the difference between 4G/5G and test specific consumer cases. Our 5G Hub is a live, evolving and constantly updated project, so we are opening the City of the Future zone. To imagine this new world, you do not need to turn on your imagination - just look at it through the smartphone screen, - said Alexey Telkov, technical director of Tele2. |
Tele2 launched cloud games on 5G
October 9, 2019 Tele2 announced the launch cloudy of games on the pilot network. 5G Users can try out cloud games technology in the 5G Hub on Tverskaya Street in the center. During Moscow cloud gaming on 5G networks, speeds above 1 Gbps and latency up to 5ms are achieved.
Tele2 shows the difference in gaming quality when connected to 4G and 5G networks. An operationally demanding game on a cloud platform has been chosen for demonstration.
In cloud gaming, the user plays on his device, while the game starts on a remote server. Only the "picture" is transmitted to the user's device, and mouse movements and commands from the controller arrive at the server. The cloud service allows the gamer to play on a computer of any power, but the main condition for the quality of the game is fast Internet.
Testing cloud games in its pilot zone, Tele2 invites users to feel the difference when connecting the service to 4G and 5G. Two are installed on the territory of cloud games: laptop one of them is connected via - Wi-Firouter 5G to the fifth generation network, the second via a modem to the 4G network. The game is displayed on screens, and the gamer can see the quality of gaming in various technologies.
In cloud games, not only speeds are important, but also minimal latency, since commands from the gamepad are transmitted to a remote server with the game. When playing the cloud, even on a high-quality 4G network, problems may arise - insufficient support for beautiful but "heavy" graphics, difficulties with management. 5G technology gives players advantages previously only available with cable connectivity and superior to its capabilities. This video is as a 4K, a short response and ultra-high speeds.

On November 20, 2018, it became known about the creation in Russia of a single infrastructure operator for the development of the 5G network. The joint project of Rostelecom, MegaFon and Rostec should reduce the cost of deploying the fifth generation network, but there is a risk of limiting competition. Read more here.
2017
Rostelecom, State Hermitage and Ericsson put into operation the experimental zone of the 5G network
The State Hermitage, Rostelecom and Ericsson launched in May on the territory of the General Staff of the Hermitage an experimental zone of the fifth generation 5G experimental communication network. The launch ceremony was attended by Hermitage Director General Mikhail Piotrovsky, Rostelecom First Vice President Vladimir Kiriyenko and Ericsson President in Russia Tolstoy Sebastian.
Rostelecom is the telecommunications operator of the project - the company has provided the necessary radio frequencies and technological infrastructure to create a 5G network. Ericsson provides the necessary set of 5G technical solutions, their implementation and integration, and the Hermitage has provided a platform for testing the network.
In a specially prepared exposition zone, the Main Headquarters presented possible directions for using new generation networks in museum business.
One of the areas to be discussed and developed is the use of this technology in restoration. New opportunities were demonstrated by Igor Karlovich Malkiel, head of the Laboratory for the Scientific Restoration of Precious Metals of the State Hermitage. With the help of a roborook controlled from a distance, he cleared the modern copy of the sculpture from the Hermitage collection from the composition applied to it. Removing surface contaminants is one of the most common restoration processes. The minimum delay in data transmission makes it possible to work remotely at any distance in real time. Only 5G technologies can provide the required parameters.
On the basis of roboruki, it is possible to carry out not only remote restoration, but also distance training of restorers using special devices
The presented scenarios were demonstrated on the basis of Rostelecom's test network using the 3500 MHz frequency range. To ensure the effect of presence in both cases, a 360-degree camera was used, and the 4K video stream it shot was transmitted to virtual reality glasses. As a result, the effect of being near the object of art is created. For remote control of devices, uninterrupted high-quality data transmission at high speeds and instant network response are required. Only 5G technologies can provide the required parameters.
Launch of the 5G pilot zone in Tatarstan
The pilot zone of the 5G communication network was launched in May in Innopolis in Tatarstan. The opening took place with the participation of the President of the Republic Rustam Minnikhanov and the head of Rostelecom Mikhail Oseevsky. The tasks of the project, covering the university and the technopark on the territory of Innopolis, will be to study the market for demanded services in 5G networks, demonstrate commercial opportunities and search for effective business solutions, Rostelecom said in a statement.
When creating a test zone, Huawei broadband wireless access equipment with 5G direction elements (Massive MIMO) was used. This technology allows you to increase the bandwidth of each cell by 4-5 times compared to LTE networks. In addition to Huawei, Rostelecom's partner in the project is the TransTeleCom operator.
The launch ceremony in test mode also demonstrated the technical capability to provide high data rates, throughput and ultra-low latency. Showing the practical application of 5G equipment began with streaming video in 4K resolution and live from a 360-degree camera in a virtual reality helmet. Using Massive MIMO technology, data transfer rates in excess of 2 Gb/s were achieved.
Launch of the first open pilot zone of the 5G network in Skolkovo
The Skolkovo Foundation, Rostelecom and Nokia on March 21, 2018 announced the launch of the first open pilot zone of the next generation 5G network in Russia. It will function on the territory of the Skolkovo innovation center. Companies and research teams involved in the development of promising products used in 5G networks are invited to jointly test modern equipment and solutions on the site of the test zone.
Promising areas for 5G are industrial Internet, unmanned vehicles, video analytics, and a number of others. With the participation of Skolkovo startups, we are already preparing "pilots" for cartography for agriculture, for the protection of large construction sites using drones, solutions for the media industry (for example, for organizing broadcasts in 360 degrees). We are ready to provide companies that work in the field of using fifth-generation networks with the opportunity to test and apply their innovative developments directly at Skolkovo with the support of experts from Rostelecom and Nokia, "said Igor Drozdov, Chairman of the Board of the Skolkovo Foundation. |
It is expected that the pilot zone will show the prospects for the latest 5G-based communication technologies for their further use in various sectors of the economy. Rostelecom will conduct a study of the possibility of using individual sections of radio frequency bands in the range of 3400-3800 MHz.
As part of the launch of the test zone, special tests demonstrated the technical feasibility of providing high data rates, throughput and ultra-fine ping time. The practical application of next-generation communication network equipment for users was demonstrated on an ultra-high definition (4K) TV screen, high-quality content to which was transmitted using a 5G modem.
The greatest efficiency in terms of data transfer rate and response time was shown by the use of a solution that provides for aggregation of frequency bands in the 1800 MHz and 3.5 GHz bands, implemented on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 subscriber terminal.
5G networks are the next evolutionary stage of previous technologies, which is designed to become one of the pillars in the digital economy. This technology will require an order of magnitude more base stations. It will be necessary to connect them to switching centers and data centers for processing subscriber traffic, as well as fiber-optic networks with the functions of software-controlled networks. Rostelecom offers telecom operators to use the services of its ready-made developed infrastructure and will focus on its main client business. The tasks of the open pilot zone are to study the technical features of the technology and, importantly, to work out the scenarios of the infrastructure operator model and search for business solutions that will become growth drivers as 5G networks appear, - commented on the event Mikhail Oseevsky, President of Rostelecom. |
FSO may prevent the allocation of 5G communication bands for VimpelCom and Rostelecom
VimpelCom and Rostelecom structures may have difficulties in obtaining frequencies for 5G testing due to the FSO's refusal to allocate bands in the 3400-3800 MHz bands. At the same time, the applications of MTS and the National Research Institute of Technology and Communications (NIITS), which requested frequencies in other bands, are planned to be fully approved. This can put operators in unequal conditions when testing 5G speeds writes Kommersant in November.
State Commission on Radio Frequencies (GKRCH) plans to allocate a 25.25-29.5 GHz band to VimpelCom for an experimental 5G communication network in, To Moscow,, and St. Petersburg Voronezh Leningrad Moscow Samara regions, the Republic, and Tatarstan the territories Krasnodar , Stavropol follows from the preliminary draft decision of the GKRCH (Kommersant has it). The final decision will be made at a meeting on December 28. At the same time, the state commission plans to refuse the operator in frequencies 3400-3800 MHz in the same regions. She opposed the allocation of frequencies in this range, it follows FSO Special Communications from the appendix to the documents.
Other companies had the same problems. GKRCH is ready to allocate radio frequency bands for testing 5G structures FreshTel (controlled by Rostelecom). Progress LLC, Orion LLC, Interproekt LLC and Stolitsa LLC, which claimed 3400-3600 MHz and 3600-3800 MHz frequencies, will receive 3400-3440 MHz and 3545-3550 MHz Kazan in both (Innopolis Tatarstan), and St. Petersburg Belgorod Ivanovskaya regions, and, Kaliningrad Moscow Svetlogorsk, (Crocus Krasnogorsk Expo) and in the center. " Skolkovo The Commission plans to refuse companies to allocate frequencies 3440-3545 MHz and 3550-3600 MHz - also due to objections from the FSO Special Communications.
In addition, GKRCH plans to completely refuse LLC "Your Mobile Technologies" Tattelecom("") in the radio frequency band 3400-3600 MHz for communication LTE of the standard/LTE-Advanced for research work in Kazan and Innopolis "on the basis of a negative conclusion" about the possibility of its allocation.
It follows from the materials of the State Committee for Radio Broadcasting that the commission decided to fully approve the MTS application for frequencies of 27.5-28.35 GHz to create fragments of experimental 5G networks in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kazan, Rostov-on-Don and Sochi. The State Commission also plans to approve the request of NIITS (part of the structures of businessman Vitaly Yusufov) for frequencies in the range of 24.25-27.5 GHz, 31.8-33.4 GHz, 40.5-42.5 GHz and 66-71 GHz for tests in Moscow. NIITS General Director Alexander Minov told Kommersant that he was not yet familiar with the decision of the State Committee for Emergency Situations, but noted: the institute expects to receive the requested frequencies, which will allow testing 5G using domestic equipment. MTS said that they are awaiting the decision of the State Committee for Emergency Situations. "Already, MTS is improving the bandwidth of networks and working closely with vendors," the company noted. The operator recently entered into an agreement with Ericsson, which in 2017-2020 will supply MTS with equipment and software for the 5G network for more than €400 million.
VimpelCom does not comment on draft decisions that are submitted for consideration to the State Committee for Radio Broadcasting, noting only that "they are fully ready to test 5G in promising frequency bands." Rostelecom reported that they expect to receive the amount of radio frequency resource that is necessary for the deployment of 5G experimental zones in Innopolis, Skolkovo and the Hermitage. "We propose to wait for the official decision of the SCRC. All our previously stated plans remain in force, "the operator's press service said. According to a Kommersant source close to the company's management, the operator still expects to receive at least 45 MHz of continuous frequency bands in those bands for which the GKRCH project provides for a negative solution, as well as in bands 3600-3800 MHz. According to him, after testing 5G in 2018, Rostelecom plans to consolidate the allocated frequencies. Another Kommersant source at the company clarifies that perhaps not all companies included in FreshTel will receive the announced frequencies. In addition to Rostelecom, Tattelecom , Huawei and the Ministry of Informatization and Communications of Tatarstan are participating in the project to deploy 5G in Innopolis. Tattelecom did not respond to Kommersant's request. Earlier, MegaFon was the first to receive frequencies for 5G testing. In July, GKRCH allocated a resource to the company in the 3.4-3.8 GHz and 24.25-29.5 GHz bands.
It is important for operators to get the maximum necessary frequencies to demonstrate high 5G speeds, another way to show 5G capabilities seems difficult, says Georgy Muratov, leading expert on 5G Ericsson in Russia. "In obtaining narrower or interruptible bands, operators fall into an unequal position compared to those who received wider and more continuous bands," he explains. But the decision of the SCRF may depend on which frequency bands are already occupied in specific territories by other users, for example, satellite systems or military services, adds Mr. Muratov.
MegaFon and Rostelecom will jointly develop 5G networks
Telecommunications companies MegaFon and Rostelecom in November 2017 signed an agreement on cooperation in the development of 5G networks. According to the calculation of companies, this will reduce the cost of building such networks.
Within the framework of cooperation, MegaFon and Rostelecom intend to develop optimal scenarios for the introduction of fifth-generation networks based on international experience, taking into account the peculiarities of the Russian mobile communication market. The companies do not exclude the possibility of creating a joint venture, which will act as a single infrastructure operator for the construction of networks and the provision of 5G communication services.
MegaFon and Rostelecom also plan to create a working group that will offer options for deploying 5G networks in the 3.4-3.6 GHz and 26 GHz bands, including taking into account the government's Digital Economy of the Russian Federation program. Obviously, 5G will become one of the key technologies in the digital economy, "said Mikhail Oseevsky, President of Rostelecom. - We believe that the creation of a full-fledged fifth generation mobile network in Russia requires combining the efforts of market participants. Our partnership with MegaFon is designed to demonstrate the success of this approach in deploying 5G generation networks. |
Both companies are actively involved in promoting the 5G communication standard in conjunction with international equipment manufacturers. For example, MegaFon is working on the introduction of 5G technology as part of its membership in the international organization of mobile operators GSMA. The operator has already received a frequency range of 3400-3800 MHz and 25250-29500 MHz to build 5G test zones as part of the 2018 World Cup.
Rostelecom, in turn, has the necessary network infrastructure, radio frequencies and project experience. Earlier, the company signed agreements on the construction of 5G networks in Innopolis, the Skolkovo innovation center and the State Hermitage State Budgetary Cultural Institution.
Agreement with Nokia on the creation of a pilot zone of the 5G network in Skolkovo
On October 17, 2017, an agreement was signed between Rostelecom"," Nokia Skolkovo Foundation and on the creation of an experimental network zone 5G on the territory of the Skolkovo innovation center. The document was signed by the president of Rostelecom, Mikhail Oseevsky the president of the Skolkovo Foundation Victor Vekselberg and the vice president of Nokia in the Vostochnaya region (Europe Demetrio Russo Demetrio Russo).
The parties agreed on a list of scenarios for the possible use of fifth-generation wireless technologies that can be implemented within the framework of the project. The implementation of these scenarios will demonstrate the capabilities of the latest communication technologies for their further use in various sectors of the economy.
According to Oseevsky, Rostelecom has the necessary network infrastructure and radio frequencies for the construction of an experimental 5G network zone at Skolkovo. Within the framework of the project, the operator will conduct a study of the possibility of using certain sections of radio frequency bands using promising technologies, including IMT systems, using electronic means LTE of the/LTE-Advanced standard.
I am convinced that the creation by our technological partners - Rostelecom and Nokia - of an experimental 5G network zone in Skolkovo will be a serious help in the work of our innovation center and at the same time, demonstrating the capabilities of the next generation of mobile technologies, will contribute to their early mass implementation, - said Viktor Vekselberg. |
The peak speed of 5G will be about 20 Gbps, which is enough to transmit hundreds of Ultra HD video streams with 8K resolution in one cell. The first specifications of the 5G standard should be developed in 2018, and the first commercial 5G network can be deployed in 2019, Rostelecom noted.
Tele2 and Nokia tested 5G capabilities
Tele2 and Nokia have tested fifth-generation mobile technologies. As explained in Tele2, the demonstration of the capabilities of the fifth generation mobile communications technology was carried out within the framework of a cooperation agreement signed in 2016. The parties agreed on the intensive development of 5G networks in order to solve problems related to the growing needs for data transmission services between people, devices and machines.
5G technology is expected to contribute to new applications and use cases, including in areas such as industrial automation, unmanned transport management, remote medicine, virtual entertainment. Each of these applications requires ultra-high speeds and low signal transmission delay, the operator emphasized.
During the demonstration, Tele2 and Nokia presented various options for using fifth-generation technology. As a first scenario, the companies showed how 5G-based solutions can be used for self-driving cars and organizing "smart" traffic in an urban environment.
When implementing the second scenario, the work of a 5G-based video analytics complex was shown: the technology allows you to fully automate video surveillance and build intelligent perimeter security. In this case, the system analyzes the trajectory of objects and, in case of detection of suspicious persons or objects, immediately notifies the operator. In addition, 5G-based solutions help track the unauthorized appearance of objects - forgotten or intentionally left behind by violators - or their disappearance.
To conduct tests, the company used Nokia AirFrame equipment (Mobile Edge Computing solution) and AirScale, which operates in the 4.5 GHz band. The companies applied MIMO 8x8 technology using eight antennas at the base and subscriber stations and provided multi-stream video transmission. According to Tele2 estimates, this solution quadruples the data transfer rate compared to MIMO 2x2 technology in LTE networks .
"The deployment of 5G networks should be supported by the high readiness of new breakthrough services for commercial operation, for example, smart cities, unmanned vehicles, augmented reality and others. Despite the fact that the formation of a new 5G ecosystem will take time, technologically we must be ready to introduce innovative services, "said Ritvars Krievs, technical director of Tele2.
"We confirm our readiness to provide all possible support to Tele2 in the evolution to 5G networks, using the optimal transition scenario with the subsequent commercial implementation of 5G systems. We are planning further joint projects under our 5G technology agreement, "said Demetrio Russo, vice president of Nokia in the Eastern Europe region.
