Acquisition of Marelli assets in Russia

Italian-Japanese car component manufacturer Marelli is leaving Russia. About the liquidation of its St. Petersburg branch - the enterprise "Marelli Rus" - said its director Artem Surkov. According to him, the company transfers its assets to the St. Petersburg Automobile Plant. Read more here.

Transfer of the plant to state ownership due to sanctions risks

AvtoVAZ, as Dmitry Kostromin, vice president for sales and marketing of the company, said in mid-February 2024, returned Avtozavod St. Petersburg to state ownership. Now this is an independent unit of the factory, he noted.

According to RBC, citing a source close to AvtoVAZ, the plant became the property of the NAMI State Automobile and Motor Institute (subordinate to the Ministry of Industry and Trade). Previously, NAMI bought the plant from Nissan for a symbolic price with a buyback option within six years.

Representatives of the automotive market interviewed by the publications believe that a change of ownership of the enterprise may be necessary to avoid sanctions risks.

Some companies, frankly, do not want to be sanctioned due to cooperation with Russia, "says Frank Auto Managing Director Irina Frank. - In addition, despite the fact that some Chinese automakers are attracted by Russia, our market for them is not yet a priority due to the small sales volumes by China's standards.

One of the interlocutors of the publication claims that AvtoVAZ, together with the Chinese manufacturer Chery, is preparing the plant for restart by mid-February 2024. According to him, in the future the plant may remain in state ownership and a contract assembly for Chery will be organized at its site, or FSUE NAMI will transfer the plant to the Chinese side for operational management.

As Alexander Vasiliev, director of the group for servicing automotive industry companies at DRT (formerly Deloitte), noted, the localization of Chinese brands in Russia is constrained by several factors:

  • selling imported cars is more cost-effective;
  • the need for large investments;
  • "landing" technologies in Russia.[3]

Change of plant name to Lada St. Petersburg

The former Nissan plant in St. Petersburg, which has been owned by AvtoVAZ since February 2023, changed its name to Lada St. Petersburg on June 29, 2023, follows from the extract of the Unified State Register of Legal Entities (USRUL).

The car at the initial stage is produced in large-assembly mode based on the technologies of the eastern partner AvtoVAZ, which the company does not officially name. The media and specialized telegram channels reported that this was the FAW concern, and the FAW Bestune T77 model was taken as the basis of the new Lada.

Sales of Lada X-Cross 5 should begin before the end of the summer of 2023. Earlier, AvtoVAZ said that they plan to produce 10 thousand cars at a plant in St. Petersburg by the end of the year. The cost of Lada X-Cross 5 has not yet been announced. A similar FAW Bestune T77 by June 19, 2023 costs in Russia from 2,169,000 rubles.

The head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade praised the car and recommended it to buyers. He also said that by 2027 the enterprise will produce more than 100 thousand Lada cars every year. From 2023, sedans will begin to be produced on the site.[4]

AvtoVAZ confirms plans to resume car production at the former NISSAN plant in St. Petersburg in the second half of 2023. These will be new models under the LADA brand in segments C and D. The volume of production in 2023 may amount to up to 10 thousand units. In the future, the high professional competencies of our team can ensure an increase in production volumes to almost any value in the presence of demand in the Russian market. In 2024-2027, we will localize these cars, where the key task will be to maximize the capabilities of more than 30 regional suppliers of auto components. At the same time, for the successful development of the component industry, AvtoVAZ relies on state mechanisms to stimulate suppliers, for example, concessional loans from federal and regional industrial development funds. It is essential that these mechanisms are adequately funded,
noted Maxim Sokolov, President of AvtoVAZ JSC[5]€1.

FSUE NAMI transfers assets to AvtoVAZ

The former Nissan car plant in St. Petersburg, which belongs to FSUE NAMI, will be managed by AvtoVAZ, production at the enterprise is planned to begin in the second half of 2023.

In January 2023, it was reported that FSUE NAMI, subordinate to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, reports to AvtoVAZ the Russian assets of the Nissan auto concern.

Plans to assemble Chinese cars at Nissan plant in St. Petersburg

The former Nissan plant in St. Petersburg, the nationalization of which was announced by the Ministry of Industry and Trade, will begin to produce Chinese cars. According to Vedomosti on October 17, 2022, the Russian authorities are going to attract the Chinese automaker FAW through the mediation of Kamaz.

The Federal State Unitary Enterprise of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, which received Nissan's Russian assets, will have a production partner. It will be a Russian company that will manage the plant in St. Petersburg. One of the interlocutors of the publication said that Kamaz could become this partner, but "there are also competitors."

Chinese cars will be assembled at a plant in St. Petersburg

In Russia, FAW represents FAV Eastern Europe. Since 2007, the company has been selling commercial and trucks, since 2012 - and cars. In 2017-2018, FAW Besturn X80 cars were produced by the large-node method at the Kaliningrad Avtotor. Sales of FAW trucks in Russia last year jumped two and a half times, to 1733 units, follows from the data of Avtostat Info. The company's market share in this segment was 1.1%. Passenger car sales rose 17% to 3,137 cars.

The source of Vedomosti among the consultants of the Chinese auto industry in Russia, however, doubts that such a proposal may be interesting to FAW. The presence of a return option for the Japanese automaker means that the Chinese company will have only six years to produce cars, which is very few by the standards of the automotive industry, he notes. On the other hand, given that FAW is a state-owned company, the decision may be "political," the source believes.

In October 2022, Nissan Motor announced that it would incur losses of about 100 billion yen ($686 million) as a result of leaving Russia.[6]

All Russian assets of Nissan, including the plant, are transferred to state ownership in the person of FSUE NAMI with the right to repurchase until 2028

In October 2022, it became known that all Russian assets of the Nissan automaker, including the plant, will go into state ownership in the person of FSUE NAMI.

The company sold its assets with the possibility of subsequent redemption. If desired, Nissan can return its assets back until 2028.

As part of the announcement of the imminent departure from the market, the Executive Committee of Nissan on October 11, 2022 approved the sale of its Russian business to the Central Research Automobile and Motor Institute NAMI.

During the sale, all Nissan operations carried out in Russia through Nissan Manufacking Rus LLC (Nissan Russia) will be transferred to NAMI for the implementation of future projects for the production of passenger cars. The transferred business, including Nissan's production and research centers in St. Petersburg, as well as a sales and marketing center in Moscow, will operate under a new name.

The sale is expected to take place in the coming weeks after obtaining permits from the relevant government agencies. Under the terms of the sale, Nissan is entitled to make a reverse purchase of the company and business over the next six years.

Nissan's one-time losses due to its withdrawal from the market are estimated at about 100 billion yen.

Nissan's decision to leave the Russian market caused serious damage to the carmaker: the company's net profit fell by 68%. Neither the 30% increase in own sales nor the 44.5% increase in operating profit in the third quarter saved the Japanese auto giant from losses due to the write-off of Russian assets.

"I thank our Russian colleagues on behalf of Nissan for the contribution they have made to the business over the years. We cannot continue to operate in the market, but we have found the optimal solution to support our staff, "said Makoto Utida, President and CEO of Nissan.

According to the company, from January to December 2021, 22,156 Nissan Qashqai crossovers came off the assembly line of the Nissan plant in St. Petersburg, which secured the status of the brand's bestseller on the Russian market. In terms of the volume of cars produced, this model surpassed the 2020 figures by 17%. The second most popular sales and production was the Nissan X-Trail crossover. In 2021, the Russian enterprise Nissan assembled 20,312 cars of this model, which is 18% more than a year earlier. The Nissan Murano full-size crossover closes the top three with 2,572 copies produced, exceeding production for 2020 by 20%.

For export, to Kazakhstan and Belarus, only 4,424 cars were delivered from the Nissan plant in St. Petersburg, which more than doubled the volume of such supplies last year.

The company managed to achieve such results thanks to the activities of a well-coordinated professional team of plant employees, as well as the launch of a second full-fledged shift from November 1, 2021, Nissan noted.

In January 2021, the 450,000th car rolled off the assembly line of the Russian Nissan plant. From April 5, 2021, the Nissan plant in St. Petersburg started production of Nissan Qashqai and Nissan X-Trail crossovers with the ProPilot system, as well as proprietary functions of Nissan Connected Services.

As of mid-January 2022, the brand's own factory in St. Petersburg produces three models that are most popular among Russian consumers: Nissan Qashqai, Nissan X-Trail and Nissan Murano. The number of employees of the enterprise is about 2,000 people.

Plan to increase production by 20%

Since November 2021, due to the recovery of the market and the growth of car sales, the Nissan plant in St. Petersburg is switching to a two-shift mode of operation. This measure, planned and announced back in the summer, will increase the volume of cars produced - Nissan Qashqai, Nissan X-Trail and Nissan Murano - to 20%.

The plant will operate five days a week with two eight-hour work shifts. Saturday and Sunday are weekends.

On the territory of the enterprise, strict compliance with the requirements of the Standard for Safe Activities and Sanitary and Hygienic Safety was ensured in order to counter the spread of a new coronavirus infection in St. Petersburg. The plant management makes every effort to maintain employees on the way to creating herd immunity: vaccination at the plant is available to anyone, each vaccinated person is given an additional day to leave or a certificate to a sports store. To minimize the risks of the spread of COVID-19, the company's office employees are partially aimed at remote (remote) operation.

After additional recruitment for the second shift, 1926 people work at the plant for November 2021.

For 9 months of 2021, 17% more cars were produced than in 2020 (30,526 against 26,058 cars, which is partly due to the shutdown in April 2020 due to the shutdown). In the third quarter of 2021, there is also an increase of 5% (10,557 versus 10039).

Exports to Kazakhstan and Belarus are also increasing. For 9 months, supplies to Belarus and Kazakhstan more than doubled (by 119% to Belarus, and by 117% to Kazakhstan). The 3rd quarter shows even greater growth - it was delivered to Belarus, more than 4 times more a year earlier (429 cars versus 109), to Kazakhstan - three times more than last year's result (709 cars versus 246).

2020: Development of quantum computing in Russia

On January 22, 2020, it became known about the beginning of the joint work of the Russian Quantum Center (RCC) and Nissan in the field of quantum chemistry. The partners intend to create new methods for finding materials that can be used in new batteries of electric cars.

Modernization of production in St. Petersburg. Results of 10 years of development

In February 2019, the production of the updated Nissan Qashqai crossover began at the Nissan plant in St. Petersburg. Compared to the European version, the Qashqai, assembled in Russia, has modernized the chassis, body and equipment, due to which the car has become quieter and more comfortable on the go, and is also better adapted to harsh Russian climatic conditions. As of July 4, 2019, Qashqai can already be purchased from official dealers.

According to representatives of the Russian Nissan plant, in parallel with the car, the production where it will be produced was also modernized. In addition to the assembly line, the plant now has its own stamping shop and plastic parts shop and exports parts to the after-sales service market in Europe - bumpers, for example.

Russian plant recognized as one of the most efficient divisions of Nissan

In terms of its size, the stamping workshop is comparable to a football field, its area is about 9000 sq.m. The height of the building is 22 meters, and it has a stamping line of the Japanese company IHI with four powerful presses. In the largest, with an effort of 2,400 tons, sheet steel takes the form of a future part. The remaining three bend the workpiece, calibrate and cut the edges, pierce the necessary holes. Finished body elements can be stored in a 4,300 sqm warehouse, where up to 50,000 parts can be placed.

Over the years, the plant in St. Petersburg has already twice received the "Best Factory in Terms of Product Quality" award among all Nissan enterprises in the world

All body panels for all models are made of steel from Russian suppliers. When the plant first opened, the bodies of future cars were welded by hand, using welding tongs. Now in the most important areas there are 38 welding, 8 rolling and 1 mastic robots. In total, about 3,200 welded points are placed on the body, 40% of which are made by robots. At the end of the body line there is a quality control post, where with the help of special equipment they monitor the absence of defects on the metal, check the gaps between the panels and the accuracy of the connection of parts. In case of any deviations, immediate measures shall be taken to eliminate them.

In total, about 3,200 welded points are put on the body, 40% of which are made by robots

Even higher is the degree of automation of the plastic components workshop. Here, bumpers are produced by injection molding, as well as protective wheel arches. The workshop has a thermoplastic plastic (TPA) - a horizontal press with a force of up to 3200 tons, which forms the desired part in an average of 48 seconds. When it becomes necessary to switch to the manufacture of parts of a different shape, changing the tooling takes less than five minutes, according to Nissan. At the same time, only 9 workers provide the entire plastic production process in each shift.

Components and bodies are delivered to the stations of production lines by automated transporters. They work accumulators from and can carry up to 1.5 tons of cargo. Trolleys pilotless are moved on magnetic tapes on the floor of workshops.

In turn, thanks to the automated system for the supply of IPO (Individual Parts Order) parts, the operator knows which parts need to be completed, and where and when they need to be delivered. If in the early years the plant was forced to make large batches of the same machines, then the introduction of an automated system for the supply of parts made it possible to assemble cars of different configurations in any sequence. That brought production closer to customer requests, Nissan plant officials said.

Automated transporters moving on magnetic tapes on the floor of workshops

However, logistics is only part of a single computer network that manages the plant. The system with elements of artificial intelligence also monitors all production processes, their quality and performance indicators, promptly informing the employees responsible for a particular production site. In addition, the computer monitors the condition of the most important equipment, signaling the slightest deviations in its operation. All this allows you to achieve the proper quality of the cars produced.

In parallel with the refinement of Nissan Qashqai using digital modeling of the assembly process, ways were found to increase the efficiency of the plant. Some of the equipment has been modernized, several systems have been implemented that simplify assembly - for example, platforms with tools and parts moving in parallel with cars. Two additional automatic conveyors were installed - for assembling doors and wheels.

Usually, after painting the body, the doors are removed from it and assembled separately - without this it is difficult to install all the interior trim and components of the car. Previously, ready-made and already quite heavy doors were carried on trolleys. Now the need for them has disappeared - the 500-meter conveyor ends right at the place where the doors are installed on the car.

At the plant in St. Petersburg, additional equipment is also installed on cars

In addition, the plant St. Petersburg has a site where additional equipment is installed on cars. For example, crankcase protection or a multimedia system. Yandex.Auto[8]

Production capacity of the plant in St. Petersburg - 100 thousand cars per year

As of July 2019, 2000 employees work within the walls of the plant in St. Petersburg, and production facilities allow producing up to 100 thousand cars of several models. In addition to the assembly line, the plant already has its own stamping shop and plastic parts shop and exports parts to the after-sales service market in Europe - for example, bumpers.

2010: Second shift launch at St Petersburg plant

At the end of the launch phase, as well as as a result of the gradual recovery of the Russian market and the growth of consumer demand in 2010, production volumes were increased, which required the expansion of the staff and the launch of a second shift from June 1, 2010.

In addition to the 750 jobs already in place, another 750 locations were created at the plant. Recruitment for the second shift began at the plant in February 2010. For four months, new employees were tested and trained, mastered work skills, studied the standards of the Nissan production system.

2009: Launch of production in St. Petersburg with a planned capacity of 50 thousand cars per year

Nissan's factory in St. Petersburg - Nissan Manufacturing Rus (Nissan Manufacturing Rus), located in the northwestern part of the city in the Kamenka industrial zone, was opened on June 2, 2009. The building area covers an area of 60,000 square meters. meters. Investments in the project amounted to $200 million.

The first Russian-built Nissan cars, Teana and X-Trail, came off the assembly line of the plant. The planned capacity of the enterprise is about 50 thousand cars per year. Nissan's Russian plant is the youngest among the company's European production sites.

Only 750 people worked in relatively small production, and almost all parts and components were brought from global suppliers from Europe, Japan and other countries of the world.

2007: Laying of the first stone in the foundation of the plant in St. Petersburg

On July 8, 2007, the official ceremony of laying the first stone in the foundation of the plant took place.

In February 2007, a Resolution was adopted Governments of St. Petersburg on assigning Nissan the status of a strategic project of the city to the investment project for the construction of a company car production plant.
