Express Logic — the American company founded in 1996 developing real-time operating system ( real-time operating system, RTOS). The platform under the name ThreadX RTOS is intended for the equipment of Internet of Things and peripheral devices working based on microcontrollers (MCU).
ThreadX RTOS allows to scale sets of devices which have limited resources (for example, less than 64 Kb of a fixed memory) and eat from rechargeable batteries. By April 18, 2019 OS use 6.2 billion devices that do this RTOS of one of the most widespread in the world.

2019: Microsoft purchased Express Logic
On April 18, 2019 the Microsoft corporation announced acquisition of Express Logic for the unnamed amount. Thanks to this purchase from Microsoft there will be three operating systems for Internet of Things — ThreadX RTOS will join Windows 10 IoT and Azure Sphere. The last in Microsoft is called the "main solution for security in the field of microcontrollers".
Due to this absorption we will open access to billions of new connected endpoints, we will increase the number of devices which can freely be connected to Azure and we will provide new intellectual opportunities — the director of IoT-business of Microsoft Sam George wrote in the blog. |
The main goal of this transaction — to use ThreadX RTOS for accomplishment of processes in real time on Azure Sphere devices and to give an opportunity to the equipment based on ThreadX to be connected to Azure IoT Edge devices when possibilities of boundary calculations are required for the IoT-solution.
Microsoft purchased Express Logic in a year after announced investment of $5 billion into Internet of Things and artificial intelligence in devices on network edge (Intelligent Edge).[1]
