Investing in hydrogen engine developer ZeroAvia
On March 31, 2021, ZeroAvia announced the raising of $24.3 million. 2018: €100m fund launched by Bill Gates
On October 17, 2018, Bill Gates launched the Breakthrough Energy Europe fund, funds from which will be used to develop "fundamentally new" technologies in the field of environmentally friendly power.
The fund is 100 million euros. Half of this amount will come from the Breakthrough Energy Ventures fund (its size is $1 billion), to which money is sent not only by Bill Gates, but also by several other richest people on Earth, including Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, media manager Michael Bloomberg, head AlibabaJack Ma, head of Virgin Group Richard Branson.
The second half of the funds for Breakthrough Energy Europe will be taken from InnovFin, a division of the European Investment Bank specializing in research and innovation projects.
Breakthrough Energy Europe will invest in projects related to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, as well as aimed at improving energy efficiency in the fields of electricity production, transport, agriculture, industry and construction.
According to Gates, 100 million euros will be transferred to Breakthrough Energy Europe in "a couple of years," after which the fund's activities can be further funded.
By October 2018, Breakthrough Energy Ventures had invested in 20 startups, most of which operate in North America. Breakthrough Energy Europe is a European project, its offices will be opened in EU countries. Money from the fund will be received by European companies engaged in energy technologies that do not allow pollution.
Bill Gates noted that Europe "has demonstrated its relevance as a leader in clean power by investing heavily in research and development."[1]
