History

2022: Intel bought Tower Semiconductor for $5.4 billion

On February 15, 2022, Intel announced the purchase of the Tower Semiconductor chip manufacturer for $5.4 billion. As part of this deal, the US corporation is expanding its production capacity in the face of an acute shortage of chips.

Tower Semiconductor produces analog chips for hundreds of companies in areas such as automotive, medical, industrial and aerospace. The company produces chips developed by other companies, and also actively competes with Taiwan TSMC, one of the world's largest semiconductor firms.

Intel bought Tower Semiconductor for $5.4 billion

Intel intends to give significant impetus to its growing desire to contract for Tower Semiconductor chips, both in terms of global capacity and IP technology. At the end of January 2022, Intel announced that they would invest up to $100 billion in the construction of the world's largest chip manufacturing complex in Ohio. This step is aimed at restoring the dominance of the corporation in chip production and reducing US dependence on Asian manufacturing centers.

Tower Semiconductor's dedicated technology portfolio, geographic reach, deep customer relationships, and service-oriented operations will help expand Intel's range of foundry services and advance our goal of becoming the world's leading foundry supplier! This deal will allow Intel to offer a wide range of advanced nodes and differentiated special technologies on mature nodes, opening up other opportunities for existing and future customers in an era of unprecedented demand for semiconductors, said Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger (Pat Gelsinger).

Intel, as stated in the company, is the only player in the advanced technology market that conducts research, development and production in the United States, including the recently announced expansion of capacity in Arizona and New Mexico, as well as plans to build a mega-site in Ohio. Tower Semiconductor's technology and manufacturing presence greatly complements Intel's cutting-edge capabilities, enabling the combined company to deliver broader offerings across the company.[1]
