Growing demand for BPM systems in 2022

In 2022, many customers reduced IT costs. At the same time, they used the opportunity, through formalization and control of business processes, to increase manageability, reduce unproductive losses and ultimately increase the survival rate of companies. This contributed to a significant increase in the demand for BPM systems, especially those that automate key business processes.

Import substitution began to play an active role - the issue of software independence from sanctions turned out to be one of the most important criteria when choosing BPMS. The crisis of the usual business automation gave huge opportunities to domestic vendors. There are more Russian systems of this class on the market, and their popularity has grown precisely due to the adaptation of processes to customer requirements in a short time.

In addition to technological issues, manufacturers had to solve the problems of optimizing the financial components of projects, training personnel and other pressing issues in cooperation with customers. The developers of BPM solutions accumulated resources to offer customers the most suitable functionality. This led to a significant increase in the capabilities and maturity of the systems.

There was a redistribution of market shares, and customers began to realize that within the framework of BPM it is possible to centralize different functions that were previously distributed to different systems: to solve the problems of customer interaction management (CRM), document flow automation (EDMS ), service management (ITSM) and more.

The customer strategy last year can be called "cautious": companies mainly watched the market, someone launched projects to find and replace software, but acted quite conservatively.

During this period, the business began to build IT strategies, taking into account the transition to solutions from Russian vendors. Customers got used to new conditions for a long time and looked closely at domestic suppliers - it took time to accept the situation and prepare for migration to Russian software, - said Nikita Egorov, head of the CRM department at Navicon.

As part of import substitution, customers were divided into two main groups. The first focused on obtaining the most functional and mature product that could automate various business processes and have great potential for their business. The second group focused on using a similar solution, which was based on domestic platforms. In both cases, customers saw potential in automating their business processes.

The key factors of choice were the use of import-independent technologies, the presence of the solution in the Register of domestic software, the speed and cost of implementation, as well as the need for additional services that accelerate business processes (RPA, OCR, ICR) using artificial intelligence. Also important were the ability to transfer data, master low-code and no-code tools for self-implementation of projects, and place the solution on their servers.

Increased competition in 2023

According to market participants, customers began to approach the choice of BPM solutions deliberately. Now they pay attention primarily to the level of development of the vendor and the product ecosystem: the quality of the platform, the availability of competencies in the market, the level of partners, the number of projects implemented. Protection against vulnerabilities is also important, preferably confirmed by FSTEC certificates.

Most Russian developers have access to very large domestic companies that have not previously been particularly interested in Russian products. This gave domestic vendors tremendous experience: both in terms of maturity of requirements and scale of projects, and in terms of budgets. It can be stated that the products of the Russian market began to develop much faster. Customers who were not ready to switch to Russian products, now see the results of the first migration projects and begin to show interest in them, make a decision on migration.

According to Vladimir Andreev, president of Docsvision, the replacement of OC and DBMS by large enterprises is in full swing. In the near future, mass replacement of application systems, including ECM, will begin. It is important that today customers for the most part consider only solutions based on fully import-replaced platforms.

At the same time, medium-sized businesses invest in migration extremely carefully. For the most part, the companies have remained on the old software for now, but they are monitoring the situation, and if it does not change in the near future, they will begin to migrate to domestic software. This could happen in the next 3-5 years.

In 2023, BPM is increasingly beyond the contour of individual companies. New business processes are simulated simultaneously for multiple organizations. The most indicative example is the public sector, where there is an active transition to a client-centric model of public administration.

It requires integration at the level of business processes of a huge number of federal, regional, municipal structures, budgetary and public organizations. Customer centrism is a notable trend for commercial companies, which are also busy integrating business processes with counterparties. Russian developers have actively joined the struggle for vacant niches and are bringing new products to the market. Comindware notes that if last year the priority was to replace hardware and infrastructure software for IT security, now it is the turn of applications and application packages that solve specific narrow problems (for example, an office software package, streaming scanning and recognition systems, enterprise design systems). After that, companies begin to replace user applications - CRM, ITSM, PM, EDMS and others.

There remains an interest in microservice architecture, which allows you to disconnect the lifecycles of different applications. More and more often among the wishes of customers there is the presence of low-code capabilities. Customers have come to understand that these are tools with quite tangible business value, and they are also used for a specific purpose, and not just "to be in trend."

In addition, experts observe business interest in expanding the capabilities of BPM systems in terms of integration with other platforms and technologies, as well as increased attention to security issues, compliance with various standards and regulations of regulators.

Another key trend is the use of artificial intelligence. Companies see in such tools the potential for using a corporate assistant in different manifestations: processing requests, analyzing the knowledge base and generating answers, searching and indexing data, comparing and working with NPA, translating and creating summaries on documents, recognizing not only text, but also audio and visual data.

Vendors receive a significant part of requests from large enterprises of the oil and gas sector, fuel and energy complex, steel industry and other organizations with large-scale production.

Production companies felt the events of the last year more than other industries - many of them quickly had to change suppliers, distribution channels, equipment, some were separated from international companies.

The leaders at the request are also the public sector, banks and financial companies. The latter began to actively look for BPM systems this year and are strengthening their own development of solutions based on BPM platforms.

So, according to the publication, the leaders among the industries are the spheres of construction and IT. Their shares account for 10.3% and 10.2% of all projects, respectively. The top 5 also includes trade, the financial services industry and the public sector.

According to market participants, the demand for BPM solutions will continue to grow. Large customers will go through the first stages of comparing all systems and realize that full analogues of old solutions cannot be found. Then customers will approach the choice of new software more objectively.

As noted by Alexey Trefilov, Director of ELMA, the BPM market is difficult to calculate in absolute values ​ ​ due to strong intersections with the segments of EDMS, EDO, CRM and others. But over the past two years, he has significantly increased his maturity.

Today, BPMS/Low-Code is not an experiment at all. The competencies of both vendors and integrators who have learned to work with new products have grown significantly. We have shown multiple growth and are forecasting it next year as well. I think other market players have similar rates. Problems with the use of foreign systems

The process of leaving foreign systems from the Russian market has not yet ended and, in general, has stretched over time. Some vendors have extended their work until the end of the terms of support contracts, and for many companies this time is right now. But even if the license remains, questions arise with technical support from the vendor.

The use of foreign systems today can bring difficulties of different levels with different levels of urgency to solve them.

By the way, Russian customers had problems not only with Western systems - a number of vendors were faced with the fact that inside their products there were foreign components that stopped working.

Any Western solution today worries IT teams about the risks of disconnection, in addition, it is almost impossible to pay for these products with Russian cards. There is also a problem with the refinement of systems for the changed processes of enterprises. If earlier it was not so noticeable, now companies see that Western vendors set the logic of business processes for their markets, and for Russia they are not so relevant.

But as the risk of using foreign software grows more and more over time, most companies are gradually resolving the replacement issue.

Comindware notes that there are no such monstrous products as SAP in the domestic software market, and it is difficult to find a replacement for them. Similar systems meet the requirements of customers and import substitution requirements, however, practical difficulties may arise with them.

For example, if a company transitions from linear-functional management, the BPM system may seem unusual and perceived as another space that impedes actual operation, rather than helps. But gradually they get used to BPMS and use it as a single window connecting all information systems, including ERP.

There may be difficulties with documentation. If it is outdated or remains on the side of the departed vendor, it will require rethinking or restoration.

In addition, a number of vendors note that a new, unfamiliar interface causes a negative impression among customers. Visual components, button names, function locations can vary across systems, and employees have to retrain. People always prefer the usual, and rejection in the first stages is understandable.

A more specific problem that customers face is a tight time frame, since sometimes there is a risk that critical processes will stop, and this will lead to huge losses.

In my opinion, the key problem is that it is still difficult to find a system among Russian analogues that, as conditionally the same SAP CRM, will be able to cover several areas of CRM already implemented by the client at once. For example, have functions and systems for selling and maintaining promotions, a mobile application and a built-in reporting system. But it is very important for companies that the implementation goes as quickly as possible, and large IT projects can last for years. Customers are frightened by the long deadlines, so they will prefer a less advanced but faster installation time system.

Many consumers of IT solutions want to buy ready-made and do not waste time on the implementation and training of specialists. At the same time, they spend their resources on various loopholes for the purchase of a foreign license or on its revision, not realizing that exactly the same funds can be invested in their own development and not depend on anyone. Results of 2021: estimates of market dynamics and key factors of its development

Specialists of companies that specialize in the development and implementation of BPM systems are unanimous in opinion: the Russian market has grown. Even according to the most restrained estimates, the total revenue growth from projects implementing business process management systems was 12-15%. At the same time, some experts interviewed by TAdviser analysts talk about an "increase" of 20-30%.

The main stimulating factor in the BPM market in 2020-2021. was the revision of the attitude towards mobility and remote work - companies realized that it was necessary to ensure the implementation of business processes from anywhere in the world.

In 2021, the very perception of digitalization has changed. The introduction of IT solutions, including BPM systems, has become a mandatory element of competitiveness in the market. In addition, the transition to a remote work format required many companies to measure the productivity of employees in a new way, prompted to create conditions for full remote access to key processes at enterprises, - explains the Anton Ermakov head of the digital initiatives group. Vladimir Andreev, President of Docsvision, notes that the digital transformation factor, which manifested itself in the form of a requirement to switch to paperless work, including in the field of personnel business processes, played an equally important role.

When choosing BPM systems for clients, the speed of making changes to automated processes, the flexibility of the resulting solutions, the possibility of functional development of the system for subsequent automation of related processes have become of particular importance, adds Dmitry Arefiev, Deputy General Director of Digital Design, Head of Business Process Automation.

Directum also highlights the role of digital HR processes in ECM and BPM. Customers realized that employees can interact electronically while remaining in a legally significant field, and this contributes to the growth of the company, reducing costs, speeding up processes, and improving the internal image. Another important factor is complexity. Companies want to digitalize end-to-end tasks. In HR processes, this is represented by a step-by-step implementation: from the employee's personal account to the manager's interface, from online admission to saving the employee's case with all personnel documents and in a long-term archive.

In 2021, there was a general benchmark for digitalization and digital transformation on the market, experts say. It became obvious that in the most difficult situations companies survive, significantly reducing dependence on offline infrastructure and focused on their customers, the Anna Kuznetsova head of the company's BPM practice believes. The leader of the new rating of suppliers of BPM systems at the end of 2021 was the Digital Design group of companies. Its revenue from the implementation of BPM projects increased by 38.6% and reached 1.1 billion rubles. The second line of the rating is at Naumen (1 billion rubles, + 25%), the third - at BusinessAutomatics (960 million rubles, + 33.7%).

The total revenue of all participants in the rating at the end of 2021 reached 6.1 billion rubles, the positive dynamics compared to 2020 amounted to 32.5%.

Key Industries for BPM

According to BPM market participants, the demand for business process management systems in 2021 increased in almost all industries, but the most noticeable growth was noted in the public sector, financial companies and industry. BPM solutions are still in low demand only by small businesses.

In our opinion, the main driver of growth was customers from the public sector, who introduced a customer-centric approach and reorganized the processes of providing digital services for the population and business. Commercial enterprises also actively used BPM systems, complementing them with Low-code tools, RPA and digital assistants, - comments Mikhail Rozhkov, an expert at PARMA TG.


In turn, Dmitry Pereponov, head of business process automation at the CROC IT company, says that the demand for BPM systems is especially pronounced in the oil and gas and petrochemical industries, which have always been at the forefront of digitalization of production processes.

Most companies see the benefits and cost-effectiveness of implementing BPM systems. Therefore, we also observe stable growth in other production industries, GOK, metallurgy, food production, the expert adds.


As for the trends of 2022, according to Anna Kuznetsova, in the financial sector and retail chains, the increased interest in BPM after February 24 is due to the fact that they historically used a large number of foreign systems, and now they need to migrate to domestic solutions. In the public sector, the use of Western software carries sanctions and legal risks. Dmitry Arefiev says that the most acute demand for replacing the systems used by BPM/ECM/CSP was manifested among the Russian subsidiaries of foreign companies that previously actively used foreign products.

Vasily Anfinogentov, director of the business process automation department of FORCE - Development Center (FORCE Group FORS GROUP) emphasizes that in recent years the demand for BPM systems has grown significantly in the field. First of health care all, BPMs are perfectly combined with systems for supporting medical decision-making, when possible transitions in an automated process are carried out by a doctor, but taking into account additional information provided to him by various services that analyze the accumulated information.

According to the TAdviser database, the top 5 industries for the entire observation period (since 2005) include the following industries: trade, financial services, construction, IT and the public sector. The distribution of shares is shown in the diagram below. At the same time, over the past year, the TAdviser base has most often been replenished with projects implemented in construction and IT companies, as well as trade companies.

Foreign BPM systems for Russian customers: difficulties and options for overcoming them

After the start of a special military operation and the imposition of sanctions, almost all foreign vendors rushed to leave the Russian market. According to experts, this opens up colossal prospects for Russian developers of business process management systems, although before that domestic companies occupied leading positions in the BPM segment.

Domestic BPM products in functional terms do not lag behind foreign ones, confirms Yuri Vostrikov, General Director of LANIT Omni (LANIT Group of Companies). - If we talk about flexibility and ability to meet customer requirements, our vendors were more successful than foreign companies. However, large business for a long time still chose foreign solutions, expecting that it would receive a high maturity of processes, the best service and implementation experience. Now there are opportunities to change the situation in favor of domestic developments.


Vladimir Andreev notes that at first after February 24, there was a slight decrease in demand and a slowdown in projects associated with the desire of customers to understand how the situation will develop. However, quite quickly demand not only recovered, but also accelerated, which is primarily due to the need for import substitution. Anna Kuznetsova says that in March-April 2022 there was an abnormal increase in the number of requests to BPM vendors from potential customers. Many companies using Western solutions have urgently sought clarification about the possibilities of import substitution, without yet understanding the aspects of using foreign software at home. Subsequently, many realized that the migration problem did not require immediate action. As a result, customers calmed down, so it was decided to postpone large and complex projects for switching to new software while it was possible to work on the old infrastructure.

Customers who used foreign information systems and software faced difficulties when working in the clouds of foreign vendors. This applies to most large customers, notes Yuri Vostrikov. They had to urgently migrate to their available counterparts in order to maintain process continuity. "This entailed additional risks to sustainability and, of course, impressive costs for the rearrangement of systems, often associated with significant amounts of additional development," the expert continues. Naturally, this situation negatively affected confidence in the clouds. If earlier 70% of companies chose the option of placing BPM in the cloud, now only about 50%. In the next two years, this alignment will obviously continue, Vostrikov predicts.

Another shock to the market was the inability to renew current licenses. In addition, there was a disconnection from the technical support of foreign companies. Against this background, the state called for more active import substitution and tightened requirements for the timing of the transition to domestic products. According to a study conducted by Naumen in the summer of 2022, by that time 56% of Russian companies had already lost technical support for IT solutions based on Western software. Among other problems of using foreign solutions, respondents called the inability to extend the subscription, a significant change in cost, the risk of "not getting into Russian legislation."

The Russian market for BPM systems is now changing, foreign solutions are being replaced by Russian ones, which favorably affects the domestic market. However, a number of experts say that there are also negative points. According to Anton Ermakov from Comindware, the departure of Western companies forces Russian business to quickly rebuild, but at the same time experience and internal competencies in the use of imported software, which the market has used for many years, are lost. In addition, companies, to put it mildly, are not delighted that they now need, in fact, to re-invest in digitalization, switching to Russian solutions. It is especially disappointing for the company, which completed the introduction of foreign systems by the beginning of 2022.

At the same time, most experts are not afraid that with the departure of foreign companies in the Russian segment of BPM, competition will significantly decrease. Although it will be easier to compete to some extent, leading companies remain on the market, which have high-quality and functional developments in the field of BPM systems. Much will depend on how actively companies develop their products and how fully they can take into account customer requirements.

Market situation in 2022. And what's next?

Even despite the difficult economic situation, business leaders and experts from BPM companies expect significant market growth in 2022. Directum believes that a single ECM direction/BPM will grow by about 20%. According to Anton Ermakov (Comindware), BPM can add more than 30%.

Mikhail Rozhkov, an expert at PARMA TG, is more cautious in his assessments. According to him, the demand for BPM systems will support the need to switch to new domestic IT solutions and restructuring approaches to public administration. At the same time, the overall reduction in investment in new digital transformation projects will weaken the dynamics of the business process management automation market. Rozhkov believes that compared to 2021, the market may even fall slightly, since BPM systems were not among those that companies first began to "import substitution." The main wave of migration of BPM systems will begin in 2023, Mikhail Rozhkov expects.

Another opinion is shared by Vasily Anfinogentov, Director of the Business Process Automation Department of FORCE - Development Center:

As our experience shows, crisis phenomena - a reduction in markets, a decrease in resource availability - are drivers for the development of BPM solutions. In such conditions, companies are forced to look for additional resources to improve efficiency, and BPM solutions just provide the necessary level of formalization of actions and a higher degree of control.


At the same time, Anfinogentov notes that the future of the Russian market for BPM systems will largely be determined by the state of the Russian economy.

Dmitry Pereponov from CROC has no doubt that the high demand for BPM systems in the enterprise segment will continue for at least another two years. According to the expert, the first key factor in demand growth is the choice towards automation of end-to-end processes and the rejection of the "patchwork blanket" approach in IT systems. BPM acts here as a link between the divisions of the company. The second factor is the import substitution of foreign legacy systems, which have been rebuilt for years and have already become little like platform solutions, which were originally. That is why today BPM systems are the most suitable solution, Pereponov believes. They not only close the tasks that business needs, but also take into account the requirements for customization for the user.

More than 74% of companies in Russia are actively engaged in business process automation projects

The Russian Association of BPM Professionals has completed the analysis of data that were obtained during the All-Russian study of the speed and effectiveness of digital transformation. The study was conducted in the form of a survey in which companies from the banking and financial sectors, trading businesses and large industrial companies from almost all regions of Russia took part.

As the study showed, 33% of the companies participating in the survey maintain the pace of digital transformation despite the change in the market situation. And only 7% of companies have completely frozen investment in digital products.

The top priority area for implementing software solutions is the control and automation of logistics processes. It accounts for 23% of responses. Least of all, companies are ready to invest in digitalization of recruiting - less than 7%. Perhaps the reason for the tougher focus on investment was financial losses. Russian companies noted (33.9%) that the events of the last two years led to a loss of revenue in the amount of 5 to 10%.

In time the publication of the preliminary report of the study, Russia maintains a high level of use of programs Excel from (Microsoft 52%) as a tool for digital control of enterprise processes, while 62% of companies use programs for management, and business processes email only 17% use special digital solutions.

More than 74% of companies in Russia are actively engaged in projects to automate business processes. 5.2% of companies do not have such projects, and they are not planned.

The main problem that restrains the digitalization of business in Russia is money. Many companies require additional investments in automation software, which are not included in the plans for the main costs of maintaining and developing the business. For 49.2%, the lack of additional investment is an obstacle to the introduction of new software automation tools. It is noteworthy that additionally, the study participants indicated another reason - the lack of motivation among employees (52.5%).

On digital tools, Russian business is ready to spend up to 10% of its profit (14.5%), even less - 2% of profit - 27.3% of respondents are ready to give software developers.

At the same time, 40.4% of the study participants are ready to buy ready-made IT solutions and use the services of integrators. Another 40% are ready to independently develop software or seek the services of IT companies specializing in outsourcing.

It is curious that in 2022, Russian companies have significantly changed their view of software tools. For example, previously less than 10% trusted open source solutions. As of November 2022, the level of trust has more than doubled. Confidence in the ready-made software tools of Russian vendors has grown even more - by 290% to the level of 2020. Interest in custom development has not changed much. More than 46% of the surveyed companies consider the use of Low-code and No-Code solutions.

Among the advantages of using domestic technical means to automate business processes, respondents note the possibility of avoiding the negative impact of sanctions pressure and a more favorable price compared to foreign counterparts. Moreover, for 62.1% of the study participants, the price of IT solutions is important when choosing. But when evaluating the offer, companies will consider all the advantages and disadvantages of the IT solution in a complex, including the speed of work, feedback from colleagues and the reputation of the manufacturing company. More than 55% of the company necessarily needs a test period to evaluate the software.

As for the goals of introducing automation tools at enterprises, the results of the study indicate that the main priority is the desire to increase labor productivity (91.7%), in addition, participants in digitalization processes set themselves the task of increasing customer satisfaction (48.3%) and switching to a remote work format (15%).

36% of companies are ready to refuse to use foreign software, this is a priority for them. Among the problems of import substitution, companies see a high cost (34%), poor software compatibility (50%) and a lack of expected functionality of IT solutions (60.3%), lack of established practices (32.8%).

2021: Features of the development of the Russian BPM systems market

For the Russian market of BPM systems 2020-2021 were very successful. Almost all interviewed experts, representatives of IT companies involved in the implementation of such solutions, speak about the growth of this area. The pandemic and lockdowns have shown the need to automate business processes at different levels. The freezing of IT budgets in 2020 practically did not affect the BPM segment, since the transition to remote work and the need to implement EDS required the adjustment of business processes in a new environment.

But the lockdown has ended, and the request for digitalization and optimization of processes and business as a whole has remained, and IT budgets have increased this year, and, according to Gartner, all over the world. "Remote" has become the main factor stimulating the development of the BPM market. It calls for coordination of the activities of employees outside the area of direct access to each other, requires more formalization of activities. As a result, there is a request for systems that support consistent work within the framework of formal rules, that is, systems of the BPM class.

They have an extremely important task to maintain the context in which individual employees carry out their work. The difficulty of direct contacts also requires a system that "leads" the workflow employee, prompting him the necessary actions, - explains Vasily Anfinogentov, director of the business process automation department of Force - Development Center (Force Group of Companies).


Given all the challenges and difficulties that business faces during the coronavirus pandemic, it could be assumed that organizations will save on digital projects in an effort to reduce costs, says the Alexey Klochkov managing director. " Terrasoft Russia But a study of the low-code/no-code market, which Terrasoft conducted at the beginning of 2021 and touched upon, among other things, the topic of digitalization, showed diametrically opposite results: 95% of organizations continue to invest in business digitalization, moreover, of which almost a third increased investment in digital projects.

These figures are applicable, among other things, for the BPM market - systems for managing business processes are one of the key types of corporate software, we see that the customer request for process automation is growing every month, so we can safely assume that the trend for demand growth will continue, "says Alexey Klochkov.



Accelerating digital transformation

The next important factor is the acceleration of digital transformation. Customers no longer have time for long implementations, they want to quickly integrate new processes into their IT solutions, preferably independently and without involving contractors, because the process of identifying suppliers and contracting is also the time.

If we talk about the Enterprise segment, often such companies see the benefits of BPM tools, regardless of external factors. For example, many years ago, large customers implemented complex "monolithic" systems (for example, ERP), and at the moment some continue to use outdated software versions. In terms of support and development, these legacy IT solutions are complex and expensive. The system support period is coming to an end, which forces customers to plan for the transition to modern software versions. Therefore, customers are striving to migrate these systems to modern platforms with microservice architecture, which is precisely what entails a growing interest in BPM tools.

On the one hand, the company remains a single platform (with unified development tools, integration mechanisms). On the other hand, a large number of IT services are formed around it, automating different business processes, "says Yuri Vostrikov, operational director of Norbit (part of the Lanit group).

The company became the leader in the rating of suppliers of BPM systems in Russia, prepared by revenue from the implementation of BPM projects in 2020. Demand for BPM systems is noted in all sectors of the economy. Since the impact of the changed working conditions is felt by the economy as a whole, the demand for formalization of actions on the coverage of previously informal activities exists in all areas.

At the same time, traditionally, the greatest need for such solutions is noted in the financial sector, especially against the background of the transformation of banks into fintech companies. In addition, companies from this area form their competitive advantages through continuous work with business processes.

The leaders, according to the latest survey of market participants, now can also include retail and the public sector.

Denis Seleznev, CEO of First Form, calls retail the most flexible industry that needs advanced IT solutions. Andrei Chepakin, commercial director of ELMA, adds that retailers felt threatened with the arrival of the pandemic, so many players switched to online, and this required a change in the business processes of companies.

As for the public sector, it is approaching leadership thanks to large-scale digitalization projects. In addition, the demand for BPM systems is growing here, including because many government organizations did not manage to automate work in the initial period of the pandemic due to limited budgets.

In addition, in 2021, there were significant changes in the approach to the digital transformation of public services, as a new planning tool began to be used in departments - VCPT (departmental digital transformation program). Within the framework of the ICPT, the federal authorities need to achieve specific KPIs for the digital transformation of public services (this is not just automation for the sake of automation), for example, reducing the time and labor intensity, implementing a proactive mechanism for their provision, reducing the applicant's costs, and switching to a registry model. Achieving these indicators is directly related to the depth of automation of business processes for the provision of public services, namely, minimizing the employee's participation in decision-making and data management.

As for other areas, according to market participants, the demand for BPM from production enterprises has noticeably increased. According to RKIT, industrial companies that configured systems to work before the pandemic are now adapting their activities to work in new realities, correcting identified errors and actively interacting with developers and technical support.

ELMA Commercial Director Andrei Chepakin would also include development among the leaders in demand for BPM systems. Companies from this sector are constantly looking for ways to fight for the consumer, this forces them to use the latest technologies in their key processes: the implementation of construction projects and interaction with potential customers.

In general, according to Elena Gabdullina, head of Business Process Management at CROC, the demand for BPM no longer depends on the industry, but on the IT maturity of the organization, and on what path of evolution in the IT organization has passed and how it looks at process management.

Alexey Klochkov, managing director of "," did not single out a specific industry. The Terrasoft Russia company speaks of a tremendous demand for digitalization of processes in all market segments.

Not all companies need, for example, to manage inventory balances or automate the credit pipeline. But all companies have HR processes, accounting, document management - and here you cannot cope without BPM technologies. It is they who synchronize teams and departments, helping to quickly make decisions, receive and share information, involve all participants in order to achieve an outcome. That is, in fact, the BPM is a "universal soldier" who effectively shows himself in any conditions. We see this on the example of BPM projects of our clients from various industries, from retail and medicine to industry and the oil and gas industry, he notes.


As for the geography of implementations, according to the TAdviser database, in Russia BPM projects are most often implemented in the Central Federal District (52.6%), Volga (14.4%) and North-West (11%). The cities leading in the number of BPM implementations are shown in the chart below.

The Russian market for business process automation systems (BPM) continues to develop and gain momentum. Experts note that you no longer need to explain what this class of systems is and why it is needed. From year to year, there is an increase in the number of projects and their scale. Together with them, the incomes of market participants are increasing.

The BPM systems market can be considered mature, with a relatively stable supply and demand structure and an established basic functionality of the systems presented on it, "said Vladimir Andreev, President of Docsvision.

Vasily Anfinogentov, director of the business process automation department of Force - Development Center (Force Group of Companies), believes that the key characteristic of the current state of the Russian BPM market is its maturity, readiness to solve a wide range of business and IT problems at the junction of various methodologies, technologies and platforms.

Anton Chekhonin, CEO of Norbit (part of the Lanit group), adds that digital transformation is "dragging out" more and more industries. Companies want to respond quickly to changes in the business environment and, using low-code technologies, quickly create and configure business objects and business processes.

BPM platforms have become a universal tool for improving business efficiency. Most often, our company sees interest in such solutions from the Enterprise segment, the expert adds.


At the same time, the main driver for the development of BPM systems in Russia in the coming years may be the needs of the public sector as the largest IT customer, suggests Lyudmila Bogatyreva, head of the Digital Solutions Department of the Polilog Agency, developer of the Polycode software platform.

She notes that the active development of departmental digital transformation programs (WPTT) involves a new level of automation of business processes within the departments themselves (and, in general, their priority): the ability to make decisions by the system without the participation of an employee, proactive provision of public services, automatic exchange of information with other authorities through SMEV channels, robotization of security functions to reduce non-core load on employees.

Authorities are moving from simple accounting systems to solutions with deep automation of business processes and the use of artificial intelligence technologies. According to the results of 2019, Lanit became the leader in the rating of the largest suppliers on the Russian BPM system market with revenue of almost 940 million rubles. The top three also included the companies "Applana Business Solutions" and "Digital Design." The intellectualization of process systems is among the main trends and Anna Kuznetsova, head of BPM practice at Naumen. In her opinion, the connection of machine learning (ML) and BPM platforms provides acceleration of processes, reduces manual operation and, accordingly, errors.

According to Alexei Trefilov, director of ELMA, software robots integrate well with BPM systems, which allows them to be used to solve more serious and complex problems.

Over the past year and a half, many interesting cases of their use have accumulated in Russia and the CIS countries. Therefore, today RPA is not just an interesting new technology, it is already a really used practice. In addition, many new players have appeared, including our company - in May 2020 we released our process robotization platform, "he says.

Development without programmers

The entry into the market of Low Code platforms allows you to involve a large number of users in the development and support process (internal competence centers for process automation), said Alexey Lapshin, general director of Applan Business Solutions. Such platforms do not require deep programming skills and allow customers to quickly create new solutions.

The involvement of business users and analysts in the creation of solutions is this trend, which is now gaining popularity, says Alexey Trefilov, director of ELMA. In his opinion, in 2020, the creation of business applications is no longer the lot of programmers. Low-Code systems allow not only to connect industry specialists and management to the project, but also to increase the development speed for technically advanced IT employees.

This allows not only to create solutions faster, but also to make them more relevant and flexible. Such decisions tomorrow will easily change under market conditions and form the basis for digital transformation. Moreover, now I am talking about business applications, and not just business processes: they include business logic, data, and interfaces. So that work at all levels is simple, concise and understandable for an employee far from programming, we came to a serious redesign of the system - such tasks are not solved in a couple of months by adding new interfaces. The whole product must profess this concept. This is no longer quite BPM in its pure form, but I see that other market players are also looking in this direction, "says Alexey Trefilov.


The Low-Code platform is a trend that has been with us for a long time, says Anton Chekhonin, CEO of Norbit. He explains this by the fact that today many companies are faced with an acute shortage of qualified IT specialists. As a result, companies do not have time to close the needs of the business in technology. And low-code changes the role of IT, since with the help of such a platform the launch time-to-market, necessary for the business of services in almost any functional area, is significantly reduced - sales, marketing, procurement, HR, etc.

Low-code is becoming more and more relevant, because organizations need to create, optimize and change processes faster than ever, says Alexey Klochkov, managing director of Terrasoft Russia"." Vasily Anfinogentov adds that the demand for mobile solutions is growing more and more - now it is more important than ever to provide employees and managers with the opportunity to participate in business processes regardless of their physical location. These remote mobile solutions must be integrated with BPM systems.

Gennady Kopaev, Marketing and Sales Director of KSK Technologies, notes that processor systems are becoming process platforms, and yesterday's hype topics are turning into mandatory components.

According to Gennady Kopaev, Marketing and Sales Director of KSK Technologies, the problem with the global implementation of the BPMS platform is that such an implementation does not fall on the functional structure of the organization.

To implement BPMS, the customer must use several departments in the end-to-end process. The process owner (process manager) must be the superior manager for these departments. As a rule, this is a deputy leader or vice president. Only the IT department can act as the conductor of the implementation of the BPMS platform. If the IT manager has the status of vice president, deputy head or director of digital transformation, then implementation is possible. Otherwise, there is almost no chance. Anatoly Belaychuk, BPM evangelist at Comindware, recalls that in 2017 RPAs tried to be considered a replacement for BPM, but already in 2018 it became clear that these forms of business process automation were doomed to cooperation.

The fact is that RPA is an excellent tool for performing single operations. But it has a limitation - the difficulty of integrating single operations into a chain. These tasks require a BPM. At the same time, from the point of view of BPM, RPA bots are seen as an excellent tool for rapid integration with enterprise systems. In 2019, RPA and BPM vendors stop "pulling the blanket" and the sharing of both technologies in enterprises becomes the norm, - says the expert.

Anatoly Belaychuk, BPM evangelist at Comindware, notes that many BPM projects start with CRM, since there is a very large process component, regardless of whether we are talking about CRM for an oil company or a relatively small brokerage company. Let me remind you that all business processes can be divided into two groups: document management processes associated with the document, and functional processes, the main focus of which is shifted from the document to the interaction of people. Typically, among workshop participants, approximately 50% have experience with document management processes. At the same time, there are many more such companies than those that consciously manage operational processes. This is not surprising, since document management processes are more understandable and accessible, and tools for their automation have appeared for a long time and are actively developing at present. With operational processes, the situation is more complicated: it is negligible (no more than 10%) the indicator of those companies that understand the very possibility of automating these processes not using accounting systems, but as processes of interaction of people. These are mainly companies operating in the most competitive markets and using systems that allow them to program business processes. And only 5% of companies use BPMS systems in their work, which allow describing processes in user mode.

The leaders in the application of process management are leaders in the use of information technologies: companies in the banking and telecommunications sectors. These companies rarely use 1C systems to automate their operations. At the same time, due to their wide financial capabilities, they can choose the most acceptable BPMS class product for themselves, without looking back at the cost of the product itself or the cost of its integration with their system.

However, as you know, for medium-sized businesses Russia 1C it is a standard, and it is no secret that most Russian companies use 1C software products as the main accounting system.

Previously, these companies could not work with BPMS systems due to the fact that Western solutions were too expensive for them, and the integration of these solutions with an accounting system on the 1C platform required serious investments. Now the situation is more optimistic: new software products are emerging, and the first innovative companies have already experienced all the benefits of using systems of this class. The rest of companies are skeptical about such innovations, as well as a decade ago, many were distrustful of the use of information systems as such on a broader scale than accounting.

2011: IDC Study

In October 2011, IDC presented the results of a special study on the topic of process management.

Where it all started

In order to form a more complete idea of ​ ​ modern business process management systems, we will trace the history of their creation.

The first step in the evolution of process control can be considered the use of block diagrams drawn on paper. Similarly, attempts have been made to describe the business processes that take place in the company. It would seem that it could be easier and more affordable? However, this method had one, but significant drawback: it was impossible to measure the cost, time and other indicators of the process. In addition, there was no guarantee that the process was executed exactly as it was described in the flowcharts.

The next stage of development was the emergence of simple graphic editors, and after them specialized tools that made traditional block diagrams more convenient to understand. Flow diagrams began to be described in special notations, which allowed people involved in modeling business processes to communicate in the same language. The editors also released special program modules that made it possible to obtain upper-level indicators from accounting systems, which are the results of the processes described in the flow diagrams. These were mainly financial data. It was not possible to obtain operational indicators of processes at that time.

It is logical that the next serious step in the evolution of process management was the emergence of systems in which it was possible to work with operational indicators. Such systems implied the execution of processes directly in the program, which made it possible to analyze the time, quantity and cost indicators of processes in various sections. The only serious drawback of these programs was that it was quite difficult to model business processes in them: changes had to be made to the program itself, that is, to engage in programming.

A real breakthrough in the development of process management can be considered the emergence of modern specialized systems or BPMS (Business Process Management Suite), which allow you to automate business processes by designing them in user mode, as well as analyze the operational indicators of designed processes. Such process management tools allow you to erase the boundaries between business and IT and offer users a convenient means of implementing processes through their visual description and configuration.
