History

2021: Raising $840 million, estimated at $8 billion

On November 24, 2021, the Indian sports content platform Dream Sports announced the raising of $840 million from investors at the head of Tiger Global and DST SoundYuri Milner. According to the results of the financing round, the startup was estimated at $8 billion.

At the time of attracting investments, Dream Sports has 140 million users and manages projects such as the sports content platform FanCode and DreamSetGo. The company offers many types of services from tickets for sports matches to individual tours of stadiums and attending various celebrity events. Its main company, Dream11, grew rapidly through marketing and hiring and became one of the largest fantasy games in the Indian market. Dream11 spent heavily on advertising and various promotions during the fiscal year 2020-2021, trying to take advantage of the surge in popularity of mobile games in India in the conditions of blocking caused by the pandemic of coronavirus infection, as well as stimulate the installation of applications, since the company is not available in the Play Store.

The app faced legal problems amid concerns about the similarities between fantasy games and some gambling, a number of which are banned in the country. In October 2021, a police case was opened against Dream11 in the capital of India, New Delhi, for the fact that the company continues to offer its services, despite a new law prohibiting online games in the southern state of Karnataka.

In the spring of 2021, Dream Sports also allocated $250 million to Dream Capital, which formed a portfolio of 10 early-stage startups, including such as Fittr, SoStronk, KheloMore and Elevar. In November 2021, Dream Capital plans to expand its portfolio of projects in the field of sports, attracting fans and fitness in India and around the world.[1]
