Construction of a branch in Egypt in order to train personnel for the El Dabaa NPP

In mid-February 2023, it became known about the construction in Egypt of a branch of the MEPhI National Research Nuclear University. The goal of the project is to train personnel for the El-Dabaa nuclear power plant under construction with the participation of Russia, which is the first in this country, said Konstantin Mogilevsky, Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation.

Technical details (opening dates, programs, training periods, other organizational issues) by February 13, 2023 are in the process of approval, the press service of NRNU MEPhI reported. It is only noted that the university will deal with the project Vice-Rector Dmitry Savkin, who also oversaw the opening of the NRNU MEPhI branch in Kazakhstan in 2022.

Concrete pouring of the first power unit of El-Dabaa NPP

The development of the international branch network of the university is a necessary element of the development program aimed at strengthening the international presence of the university and its transformation into a global technological leader, the NRNU MEPhI said.

The El Dabaa nuclear power plant will be erected by Rosatom on the country's northern coast 3.5 km from the Mediterranean Sea (from 149 km to 164 km of the highway near the city of El Alamein) about 300 km northwest of Cairo. Concrete pouring for the first two of the four NPP power units began in 2022. In an interview with |RIA Novosti, the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Egypt Georgy Borisenko said in February 2023:

Opening a laboratory in the field of GIS technologies

The Geoinformatics and 3D Modeling laboratory has been opened at the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI, whose developments will allow Russian organizations and individuals to obtain the most progressive, fast and reliable technologies for working with spatial information, to ensure the independence of industry geoinformation solutions from foreign manufacturers.

The laboratory was created by the Institute of Intelligent Cybernetic Systems of NRNU MEPhI together with the Russian developer of geoinformation systems and GIS technologies - Geograkom LLC.

Among the key projects of the IIX division is the development of domestic technologies for creating 3D maps based on WebGL technologies and technologies for processing point clouds, including those obtained using LIDAR technology, in real time. According to Anton Shubin, head of the laboratory, general director of Geograkom, this unit will become a platform for conducting applied research in the field of computational geometry, fast and scalable server and client solutions for visualizing and processing vector maps, plans and 3D models, processing point clouds and extracting information from them, and moving to automated design of linear structures based on optimization methods.

The tasks of processing point clouds are in demand in the design, inventory, examination and diagnostics of the state of buildings and structures. A special place is occupied by the issues of processing large clouds of points describing linear engineering structures - roads and railways, canals and pipelines.

Solving the problems of computer-aided design of linear structures will allow you to move from "drawing" design solutions in CAD and checking their eligibility for compliance with certain criteria, to developing truly effective design solutions with clearly defined optimization criteria and restrictions, including economic ones.

The tasks being solved are very resource-intensive and require up-to-date computer equipment, so the laboratory is equipped with powerful graphics stations with video cards based on recent generations of chipsets.

It is planned to further expand and equip the laboratory.

Interest in laboratory solutions has already been identified by industrial partners from the public and private sector.

The laboratory focuses on the rapid development of the skills of its employees, both in theoretical terms (computational geometry, data structures and algorithms, optimization methods) and in practical terms (JS, React, C++, PostgreSQL) both within the university with the help of leading laboratory employees and at external, recognized training sites.

The laboratory will be located on the 4th floor of the scientific and laboratory building of the NRNU MEPhI. The laboratory invites to cooperate students, graduate students, teachers and researchers of NRNU MEPhI to work on projects in the above areas.

Study of direct laser recording of nanoarrays

On May 6, 2022 scientific , employees of the Faculty of Nanoelectronics ITMO University reported that, together with colleagues from, and FIAN RKHTU named after D.I. Mendeleev NRNU MEPhI, they conducted a study in which they found out that nanoarrays have high spectral selectivity. Their layers can be used as wavelength-specific filters, and up to six layers can be recorded on a single glass plate. Thanks to this technology, scientists have implemented dispersion birefringent filters, which can be used in various ways: for example, to create biochemical sensors for diagnosing the flow of bacteria or displays added virtual reality and with a color image. Quantum Engineering Program Launch Plan

The National Research Nuclear University MEPhI (NRNU MEPhI) launches the educational program "Quantum Engineering." The university announced this on June 27, 2022. This training course will be formed at the Institute of Laser and Plasma Technologies of the NRNU MEPhI (LaPlaza Institute) on the principle of greenfield, that is, from scratch, without looking at existing traditions. Specialists not only from NRNU MEPhI, but also from the Russian Quantum Center (RCC) and the Mathematical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences take part in its creation. V.A. Steklova. From the second year, students will have the opportunity to undergo laboratory and production practice at the sites of NRNU MEPhI and partner organizations.

The academic leader of the program is Kirill Lakhmansky, head of the scientific group of the RCC for the creation of a quantum computer on cold ions. Thanks to the support of the Priority 2030 state program, students enrolled in the Quantum Engineering program will be able to use scientific equipment specially purchased for it, and over time, under the guidance of scientists, participate in real scientific experiments.

The task of the training course is to train quantum engineers, broad specialists, whose fundamental scientific training will be combined with the ability to use the achievements of science in the development of applied technologies. The future quantum engineer is required to know physics, mathematics, programming and the ability to work with special equipment.

The relevance of this educational program is due to the fact that as of June 2022, human civilization is experiencing the so-called "second quantum revolution" (the first began at the beginning of the twentieth century with the emergence of quantum physics). In the "second revolution," quantum technologies based on controlling the position of individual quantum particles are beginning to transform more and more areas of science and technology. Graduates of the program will have to work in such areas as quantum sensorics, quantum and post-quantum cryptography, the development of quantum computers. The number of applications of quantum technologies is growing every year.

On June 2022, quantum engineering training at NRNU MEPhI will be held under the bachelor's program, but the LaPlaza Institute is already thinking about creating an appropriate master's program.
